Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Dread Be The Franchise's 'Awakening'?

MindWanderer

1) No. A 10-hour, $60 game in a market saturated with excellent games in the same genre costing $15-$25 is not going to break through anything no matter how well it's reviewed. It's a sequel to Samus Returns, which did well but wasn't a breakout title.

2) You're comparing this to Fire Emblem Awakening? Sure, that helped the series, but it mainly languished due to most of the series never having been localized. It's still not all that successful a series--already less so than Metroid. If Dread does even as well as Three Houses it will be a disappointment as a Metroid game.

Prime 4 on the other hand? If it's at all decent, it will sell like gangbusters

Re: Dark Fantasy Metroidvania Ender Lilies Launches On Switch Today

MindWanderer

@Friendly Metroid Dread is not a sequel to Fusion, despite the "Metroid 5" trailer. It's a sequel to Samus Returns, which is a mere 4 years old. A game which was overpriced at $40 IMHO.

Since Ender Lilies will likely go on sale for $15 within a year or two, if the reviews are good I'll pick it up for sure. Dread... maybe, maybe not, it would pretty much have to be GOTY for me to pick it up for even $40.

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

MindWanderer

I paid $30 for Samus Returns and was disappointed. For a 10 hour game at that price point, the game should be stellar, and it wasn't. Difficult bosses that didn't communicate their patterns and weaknesses well. (You know you have a problem with difficulty when you need to add extra checkpoints!) Exploration with no middle ground between obvious and invisible. Dull environments. It's my least favorite 2D Metroid game, and I'm the original Metroid 2 counting AM2R. (Never played M.)

I'll probably end up paying $40 for this just because it's Metroid, but I don't have high hopes.

Re: Humble Bundle Will Begin To Cap Charity Donations Next Month

MindWanderer

I haven't gotten a bundle from them in a time, but when I did it was for something I didn't really want much but figured the money was going to charity anyway.

That said, if the publishers start getting a guaranteed 80% cut instead of 0%, the quality of the bundles may go back up again. If it increases their bundle sales enough by offering quality products instead of obscure games and comics, random manga, and software totally outdone by its competition, the total amount going to charities could actually go up!

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know What You Think About The Demo For Square Enix's New Tactical RPG

MindWanderer

Long loads. Too much dialogue (5 hours out of a 6-hour demo). Unclear visuals--the 2D style is a bad idea for a 3D map, and things were highlighted in too many colors. Balance is off--one fight was much harder than the other two, and some characters border on broken while others are meh. The "triangle strategy" idea was impossible to pull off.

On the other hand, cool gimmicks and solid, if vanilla, gameplay. I'll probably buy it when it goes on sale.

Re: Random: Nintendo's Hotline Guided Super Metroid Players With This Forbidden Map

MindWanderer

I was with a friend when he called the Nintendo hotline (which was a 900 number, not free, at least at the time) because we couldn't beat the boss of Level 5 in Blaster Master. He insisted that we use the grenade pause glitch, even though it only works on the bosses of levels 2, 4, 6, and 7. He promised that if we couldn't get it to work we were doing it wrong. Neither my friend nor I ever called them again.

Re: Guide: Splatoon 2 - Adding, Removing and Picking Abilities

MindWanderer

I have never seen an article on Nintendo Life with as many errors as this. All abilities that can be scrubbed yield chunks. Unique abilities cannot be stacked because it's impossible to get two of them at once (each one appears only on headgear, only on clothes, or only on shoes. The photo showing exceptions is from a bug that was patched out.) Sub power up and special power up do not increase damage, only things like range and duration. Secondary abilities are less effective than primary abilities, so saying "two or three of these" could mean anywhere from 6 points to 30 points' worth.

Re: "No Widespread Technical Problems" With Switch Joy-Cons, Claims Nintendo

MindWanderer

I have had serious problems with disconnects, but I haven't filed a repair/replacement request because YOU CAN'T. Following the instructions on their website, you can request a repair for literally any other problem except this one.

If they continue to deny the issue, I'll probably have to just buy another pair of joy-con and then return the original, defective ones in the new box. Which is illegal, but if there's no other avenue for replacement then I won't have any viable option.

Re: Feature: We Grade the Various Nintendo Switch Launch Complaints from the Web

MindWanderer

You guys must not have the really bad joy-cons. I do. I played 6 feet away from the console, clear line of sight, and I had lots of disconnects (that resulted in more than a few mishaps and a couple of deaths).

Also, the power-off thing deserves a mention at least. I use an HDMI switch that detects active input. When sleeping, the Switch triggers it and steals the input from other devices every 3-5 minutes. I have to power it off fully by holding the button down for 12 seconds to prevent this.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Fit Into the Zelda Timeline?

MindWanderer

Less than 100 years passes between Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks, so it would have to be after the latter. It could be then, but only if the Koroks actually lowered the sea level rather than just planting new ground. Otherwise the castle and temple would just end up further underwater. And the location of the Master Sword is definitely a problem.

The Decline timeline makes the most sense to me. It's the only one in which Ganondorf becomes Ganon, and the Koroks could have evolved anyway. It could be after Zelda II, or it could even be a retelling of the original Zelda. It should be far in the future, because they had time to both invent all this technology and then to have it all get trashed.

Re: The Cryptic Crypt

MindWanderer

Harder than you think, I think, and extremely long. I enjoyed much of it but restarting on each late-stage death was pretty painful. The low completion rate is quite justified.

Re: Ghostly Mushroom by Markus Månsson

MindWanderer

Much easier than it looks. Seems like it will be confusing and challenging at first, but unless you hunt for the hidden items, it's almost completely linear. Nice design but disappointing if you wanted a puzzle.
