Update (Tue 22nd Jun, 2021): Since its launch on Switch yesterday, the team behind Ender Lilies has warned players to make sure their game is updated to Version 1.0.1 before getting stuck in. If you play the game at Version 1.0.0, you might come across a game-breaking bug.
Original Article (Mon 21st Jun, 2021 15:00 BST): If all this Metroid talk has got you in the mood for a Metroidvania or two, you might want to keep an eye out for Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights when it drops on the Switch eShop.
As promised, the game will leap out of Steam Early Access and onto the Switch eShop later today, 21st June – we're told to expect it to go live at midnight tonight. The game's been expanded since it first appeared on Steam, meaning the Switch version will launch with five new hand-illustrated areas to explore, bringing the grand total to eight. Here's a recap:
Awaken in a cathedral, fight your way past the horrors lying in wait within, and step out into a cursed rain devastating the kingdom of Land’s End. Guide priestess Lily safely past the blighted undead, formerly happy residents of her homeland, on a quest to find the source of the rain of death and end it once and for all.
Defeat former friends turned deadly bosses, then exorcise them of the blight to bring them into your party as equippable companion spirits. Mix and match these lost and found souls to create an ethereal bodyguard squad wielding massive clubs, magical bullet hell volleys, and other devastating skills to overcome challenges and traverse a world painted in a Japanese dark fantasy aesthetic.
Ender Lilies will be available for $24.99 USD / 24,99€ / £21.99 GBP when it goes live on Nintendo's digital store. We hope to have a review for you at a later date, so stay tuned for that if you'd like to read our thoughts before jumping in.

Looks interesting and reasonably priced, or rather, the right price for Metroidvania games these days.... might give this a go.
I have this one on my wishlist so a review would let me know if it's worth it. The footage looks pretty good at least.
How many people have commented about right pricing for a metroidvania already?
Oh, one already. The first comment....
As to be expected.
Maybe read this article. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/06/talking_point_why_metroid_dread_will_be_worth_usd60
On topic: might check this game out! Always down for a good metroidvania, and this one gives me hollow knight vibes. Which is a very good thing!
This is a "Wait for Reviews" game for me.
It looks good...mostly...but I was hoping the industry had outgrown this lack-of-color palette by now.
I have this on my wishlist already waiting for reliable reviewers.
@Friendly I've read that and posted a lot on it.
And i don't agree with the article.
You know, when you need to be convinced that the game is the right price by an article, it means the price isn't right.
@RoguePirate Hollow Knight is a benchmark for great value Metroidvania as far as I'm concerned. This is a little bit more expensive, but I'm hoping for good reviews soon and decent sales in the future.
Can we stop calling or comparing all games as Metroidvania or Legend of Zelda?
While it can be a positive description for a game it could also be detrimental to a game and set it or you up for failure/ disappointment. (Looking at you Okami)
I do understand that Zelda and Metroid are genre defining but still....
Perfect price for a non Metroid game. Metroid itself is worth $70 - $80 for a perfect 10 hour lenght game. Not stretching it out like the boring Hollow Knight.
Looks very anime/Touhou inspired, but do we even need this? Is this the generation of exploration adventure clones or what?! For what it is, the price is on point. That other article “prepping” our minds for the $60 price tag of Dreadful was completely unnecessary, and the price for this game is at least reasonable for what it is.
@harrystein I totally agree about Hollow Knight, such a drab adventure game. But Metroid isn’t worth that much. Even Super Metroid, the absolute best game in the series, still only goes for 20-40 depending on the carts condition. 80 would be ridiculous; that’s like a fighting game and a season pass’ worth of content.
A sale from me is pending on good reviews. I want it to be good, but truth be told, I’m secretly hoping it’s terrible. Just so I can save some money.
@Preposterous Hollow Knight definitely has become the benchmark.
@RoguePirate oh... I was going to mention this one in the Dread thread, but missed it. Pre-ordered and it is indeed an amazing price.
@moodycat true, so when is it released? I have my page saying today, though. But, still nothing.
@RoguePirate lol.... and you are convinced the game isn’t the right price because of the internet....
The game isn’t even out yet. No review has been posted yet. My god...
@harrystein i hope you're joking. HK boring? Even comparing it to Metroid?? 😂 Nintendo still has a lot to learn from Team Cherry, a team of 3 devs who managed to make an awesome game, nearly for free, and full of post launch content, for free as well. Don't compare those.
@RoguePirate let’s copy paste a comment I made somewhere else.
we have absolutely no idea how much it costs to develop a game. And you have no idea yet how much value Metroid Dread holds, since you’ve seen a ... trailer.
I think BotW was way underpriced compared to almost any other game. But Nintendo uses the same price for most its first party games for clarity. And they probably priced BotW very sharp so it could be used as a selling point for the switch. These indies are also priced very sharp because otherwise they would be lost in the bin that’s called the internet or eshop.
The obvious question is: is Metroid Dread worth 60 euro TO YOU? And apparently not. But to me it is. It has been almost two decades for a sequel to fusion. Those two decades of development and two cancellations must have cost Nintendo a lot of money already. And it looks like the 2D series finally will be revived as it should be. I’ve been waiting on the conclusion or continuation of the story for almost two decades. I will certainly pay 60 euros, and more if I happen to get my hands on the special edition.
This has absolutely nothing to do with what a 2D metroidvania should or shouldn’t cost. 2D Metroid is the grandmother of the genre and the games have always been a pinnacle for the same genre. Quality and innovation almost guaranteed. And continuation of a very good story. Completely different than a ton of pixel metroidvania games, no matter how much I also love those games.
Since there’s a Blossom Tales on the eshop for just a couple of bucks, should every 2D zelda just cost a couple of bucks? Why is there a price difference between different shampoos? Or phones?
@CarlosM87 yeah. Nintendo should release almost all their games nearly for free too.
That’s the way to go obviously.
@CarlosM87 yes boring unless you have no life. A video game should never be more then 10-15 hours to 100%
@Friendly and, by now, being one of the richest companies in the world, is still acceptable barely having promotions or over charging for every piece of garbage they release?
@harrystein i work more than 12h a day, every single day, and i still managed to beat it. Although, paying for a game that is 5h like it's the last cookie in the jar, it's not my thing either. So, let more HK's come and let Nintendo fanboys keep their games.
@moodycat true. I've been waiting for it to release. Hopefully it's today and not when they feel like it.
@harrystein lol, what? So no game should ever be over 15h long?
@Friendly and you're defending a game, that you haven't seen nothing but the trailer yet. @RoguePirate has every right to say what he wants, because you haven't seen the game yet, still you defend it's high price tag. I hope you can see how crazy that sounds, but i don't think you will. You called HK boring but you're defending Dread, that can be, for all we know, just a movie.
@harrystein Agreed. Hollow Knight was fun for the first half, but then, it just... kept going. The game outstayed it's welcome by about 10 hours...and that's without all the ridiculous loops you're expected to jump through to get the "True" ending.
How people think it surpasses Super Metroid is beyond me.
That being said, avoid accusing people of "having no lives". Time management is a thing and there are plenty of great games that are double (even triple or more) Hollow Knight's length. The problem is padding, not the raw hours themselves.
@CarlosM87 what in the world are you on this website for if you think everything Nintendo releases is garbage?
And no, I was not defending metroid. I was attacking the mindset that every metroidvania of some sort should be 30 dollars tops because of Hollow Knight. Actually read the comments next time perhaps.
@CarlosM87 I don't like Hollow Knight. I find it long and boring.
We're surely near saturation point in Metroidvanias at this stage? Devs keep making these and just like the plastic guitar fad, 2D platform craze of the 16-bit era, grey/brown FPS boom in the 2000s, it will burn itself out and it'll be years before we see another.
@Ron22 There are too many great game releases to spend 40 hours or more on one.
@Friendly just because I'm here means i have to worship Nintendo, mate? 😂 They released a some what okayish machine i can use to play games, doesn't make them gods or something i cannot see the flaws in. But, yeah, I'm not arguing with you over that, because you clearly showed your position in this. Enjoy your games.
@harrystein 🤣🤣 nah, they did an awesome game, still considered a landmark of gaming, with only 3 devs. If they had 300, Nintendo would be in trouble, since not even with 1 million workers and revenue they can make a good game.

This looks sooooo good! I love how your “avatar” sort of attacks for/in sync with you. I’d have completely overlooked this game otherwise so thanks for sharing. I may buy this today— no later than this weekend.

@Ron22 Agreed! Now I want the Cute ‘Em Up version of a Metroidvania.
@CarlosM87 I guess now is the time to assume you own some Microsoft or Sony garbage. Must be jealous of Zelda and Mario for the NO games on that crap. Lol
It comes out just when I have many new games to play...
@harrystein i own the 3 systems. XD I suppose you must be jealous of Halo, God of War, The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Bloodborne, Elden Rings, and all the "crappy" games Nintendo has in their systems as well. Oh, wait...you have Smash Brothers, fully priced remakes of 30 year old games, and Mario Rabbids, this, not mentioning Metroid 4...Oh, wait.
Aww, hadn’t realized this was a metroidvania. Sadly, pass then.
Removed - offensive remarks
@harrystein both. I envy Nintendo and every big company for their capacity to trick people and still make those same people defend them with their lifes. That's admirable. And it's called andropause in men, by the way. I suppose you wouldn't know that... 😏

I've played about 30 min so far and the performance is really good. The game feels good. So far it's pretty easy, but a lot of fun.
@RoguePirate Wow you share kicked beehive 🙈
Fact is a game should deserve the Value that was put into it.
The game getting the appreciation, well that depends of the ungrateful person. 🤣
@CarlosM87 can you point out where in my comments I said Nintendo was comparable to Jesus Christ?
Flat comment. Again.
You’re just a troll. Nothing more.
@Friendly man, please... Read again. You talked about me being angry, but you, you're in another level as well. Are you OK? Now, in verbatim:
"Nintendo, who's famous for aboring their fans guts until the sun falls down, and everyone acts like they are Jesus Christ incarnate. It's amusing."
Am i mentioning you? And, I'm not trying to troll you, since that would require me to loose energy i don't have, for something like this.
Have a nice day, my friend.
@CarlosM87 Metroid is worth 60 euros for those that deem it worth that price. Just as every other product in the world is.
Dang. What did I miss? I was going to buy this game today, but Metroid Prime Trilogy was calling instead.
@Friendly @CarlosM87 let's stop that please, let's be respectful to other users, and not participate in random squabbles
@Eel you're right. I'm sorry. I meant no disrespect to the other users reading this and thank you for deleting everything.
Let's leave the argument about the price of the game AFTER the game is released. I mean I love my metroid but I'm still gonna wait for the reviews. If it's good then buy, if it's meh then nah. Simple as that.
Just bought the game, for what ive see looks awesome

@Scrubicius Just because i don't think it's good for Nintendo to charge $60 for what would essentially be a DS game, doesn't make me ungrateful.
Let's be realistic here, if Nintendo still supported the 3DS, this would be on there for $40.
Look at it another way.
I can get Hollow Knight, Hades and Dead Cells for the price they are asking me to pay for one Metroid game.
If you think that's a great deal, then you can enjoy yourself, but it doesn't make me ungrateful for thinking it's a bad deal.
@COVIDberry That wasn't my statement. That was the other guy. I only ever buy Nintendo systems. I might criticize some of their games but I consider most things Mario, the pinnacle of video games.
@Friendly my point is, a company as big as Nintendo shouldn't really be charging $60 for a game that a company like Team Cherry would charging 1/3rd that price.
You're paying for the brand and the logo of Nintendo, not for extra quality.
Look at it another way, if Team Cherry had charged $60 for Hollow Knight, considering it was their first proper game, do you think they'd have gotten nearly as much recognition as they did get? We both know they wouldn't.
Why give a big $60 billion dollars company like Nintendo a free pass just because...
Or maybe you don't see the problem in today's neo capitalism way of thinking. I dunno.
@Friendly Metroid Dread is not a sequel to Fusion, despite the "Metroid 5" trailer. It's a sequel to Samus Returns, which is a mere 4 years old. A game which was overpriced at $40 IMHO.
Since Ender Lilies will likely go on sale for $15 within a year or two, if the reviews are good I'll pick it up for sure. Dread... maybe, maybe not, it would pretty much have to be GOTY for me to pick it up for even $40.
@RoguePirate @mindwanderer storywise its a sequel to fusion.
I absolutely don’t get the whole discussion about the price. It’s up to the publisher to come up with a price point and up to the consumer to decide to buy it or not. On top of that: the game hasn’t even been released yet, and we are therefore absolutely in no way able to compare it yet to any other game.
A recently published by Nintendo ‘flopped’ game which apparently was too expensive was sushi striker, which ended up in the discount bin pretty soon after release. Not everything Nintendo publishes turns into gold. We’ll see what happens to Metroid, ok?
@Friendly @Friendly You can wait to see how it turns out but realistically, I want an AAA gaming experience on par with games like Breath Of The Wild or Smash Brothers or Mario Odyssey and I certainly won't be getting that type of experience from a 2D Metroid game that will more than likely be less than 20 hours long. Like all other 2D Metroid games.
But you can go ahead and spend your money on it, all the more power to you, I won't.
@RoguePirate good to see that you now see it’s a subjective matter. Very difficult to compare per product and person.
I will most likely find more enjoyment in this game than in paper mario for instance. Let’s go Eevee. Mario Party. Yoshi. Pokemon snap. Or even smash. Yet they’re all priced the same.
Also, the three games you mentioned were used as a system seller. Ten million sales times 60 euros means more profit than one million sales times 60 euros. Each console only has a few of those. Might also be a reasoning for equalizing the prices.
Anyway, thank you for allowing me to spend my money on Metroid. I will! I’m very much looking forward to the next installment of this genre defining series.
Wow, people are really complaining about paying a paltry $25 for a good game. First world problems man, I swear....
I wish I had these games and prices back in the 80s/90s when I was a kid/teen.
I paid $80 for Super Mario 64 at launch with a smile on my face. $70 for FFVI, $80 for Phantasy Star IV, $70 for both Earthworm Jim games, etc.
Lets not get into all the various Gameboy, Game Gear, and Neo Geo Pocket games for $30-40 that featured less content, graphics, and music than something like Ender Lilies, etc.
I did wait for some eventual $15-25 bargain priced games (January 1994, Shinobi III and Gunstar Heroes for $20 a piece) Meijer and Walmart would do after a few months though, but it was usually done to niche games and poor sellers.
I don't know why, but these comments are really making me laugh. Kinda wish I could read the adult version of the comments (not in the maturity sense, but in the rated R sense). I think the only real question is why do all meatballs not cost the same?!
I'm really curious about Ender Lilies. Some great reviews, some mediocre ones. Sounds like it might run at 60fps on Switch, but I'm not sure yet. It can be difficult to choose, like when they do a sale on PC right when a game is coming out on Switch, but I don't know how good the frame rate is on Switch, or how long the load times are...
And I guess I'll just say that I don't like capitalism, but I'll buy Metroid 5, and Advance Wars reboot camp, and Warioware get it together, etc etc.
In black and white, with no body language or tone of voice, it can be easy to take things the wrong way. I'll say "what a save" to a team mate in Rocket League, but it shows up close to when an opposing team member missed a save and got scored on so they think I'm insulting them, whew!
A colleague at our outlet in Brazil, PizzaFria.com.br, gave Ender Lillies a 10/10. I am really curious about this one.
@Friendly 60 bucks is too much for any metroidvania, even if it's a new one.
@60frames-please So..play in your PC and enjoy your sweaty rocket league matches more then..? Not sure why this is here
@UglyCasanova it’s too much TO YOU.
It’s way more valuable to me than a lot of other genres. So to each their own.
The game is excellent so far. That said, the Switch version definitely has performance issues. It's dropping frames pretty often. It's not super bad (like Minoria was), but it's often enough that it bothers me.
Something off with the music of the trailer. Is it the harmonics which makes that discomfort? Not feeling it at all. Like there is some disconnect with the composer and the creators of the game. Orchestrated but lost . . . Not liking it as a package. The trailer is just awful. Also the editing does not make it for me...will wait for some reviews but I do not think I'll be back for this one.
@UglyCasanova Not sure why this is here either. That's kind of perennial question, I suppose
@MARl0 Thanks for the frame rate report. I'm looking forward to seeing one of those youtube videos where they show the frame rate graph during Ender Lilies gameplay.
I don't know why, but these comments are really making me laugh.
I'm really curious about Ender Lilies. Some great reviews, some mediocre ones. Sounds like it might run at 60fps on Switch, but I'm not sure yet.
@60frames-please I really enjoyed your comment here. In your honour, I'm composing this on my high-refresh monitor
All the lazy commentary trashing this game due to genre, price or similarity to other titles only firm my interest. Seriously, do you people think your flippant, dismissive comments are convincing anyone?
That doesn't mean I'll buy the game, but I will pay attention to it; there is something very stately about this game from what I've seen, something that even Hollow Knight and Metroid don't possess. We shall see!
@60frames-please There are definitely areas that run mostly smooth. But some areas (like the forest with a lot of water and the wizard enemies) that are pretty rough. Sometimes I'm not even sure what's causing it, because I'll notice a stretch where the game was dropping a lot of frames, and then I'll run back and retrace my steps only for it to run fine. It might have something to do with it loading in assets as you scroll through an area. And since those assets are loaded, running back through it doesn't cause the same issue (until you leave the zone and re-enter it).
@moodycat I feel you, I think it's important to remember for future reference that these games on the indie-level of size don't usually become playable until around noon EST. Sometimes it's been earlier and sometimes later afternoon (it must depend on publisher a lot of times), however I've never seen it ever go live at midnight. I do wish they would, since other games often do too.
Loved the art style ever since I saw this on a Metroidvania listing video a few months back. Gonna pick it up next paycheck for sure.
Holy God's, suddenly Metroid has become the biggest problem of the world....
As for this game, it's beautiful. Waiting for a review
@MARl0 Interesting, thanks!
@COVIDberry lol, thank you! Yes, I demand that people only read my comments on a display running at 120fps or higher! : )
Yeah, I'm intrigued by this game. I'll probably get it on my laptop if they don't patch it to run locked at 60 on Switch.
So, this an escort game? Nah... RE4 was bad enough.
@RoguePirate Never said that you where ungrateful, sorry if you thought so.
But it is clearly you can not compare a game with such detail with something like Hollow Knight. Also distinctly Metroid Dread will defiantly offer more content then a game for 3DS.
Like comparing a compact car with upperclass car.
@RoguePirate While it's true that Nintendo is a big company and shouldn't over charge for games, the fact of the matter is it make sense for Nintendo to charge $60 for their game even if the quality is on par with other games in the market. Look at it this way, Hollow Knight is a game that is widely available on almost every platform (Wii U, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Switch, Linux), Metroid Dread is a game you could get only on the Switch.
If Hollow Knight is $30 and Metroid Dread is $60, for every copy of one Metroid Dread sold, seven copies of Hollow Knight would had been sold. That means that all 7 owners of those platforms could buy Hollow Knight but of all of them only one could buy Metroid Dread cause the other six probably does not have a Switch.
So if you calculate the price times the number of platforms then Team Cherry's Hollow Knight would had made them $210 while Nintendo would only get $60 for just Metroid Dread (cause they only get sale from one platform). So if Nintendo sold 3 copies of Metroid Dread thus getting $180, Team Cherry should had already sold 21 copies of Hollow Knight thus earning them $630. You get the picture right, this is why it make sense for Nintendo to charge their game at full price.
This is also why if you go to McDonald's and order a cheeseburgers it cost less but if you go to like a mom and pop burger joint and their cheeseburgers are more expensive, why cause it's likely that burger joint may be the only joint in town while McDonald's had franchise branches all over the cities and across the country so they are everywhere which is why they could charge less.
The mom and pop joint probably had less branches which is why they could charge more for their exclusive burger. Nintendo is like the mom and pop joint, their games are not widely available through multiple platforms so if you buy it on their system you are expected to pay more.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi so you're telling me that it's okay for a 60 billion dollar company to to put less effort in making a product and charge $60 for that same product that a smaller company would put more effort into, charge $20 because the bigger company will sell less so the customer has to foot the bill? (The company in question here is Team Cherry)
First off, if you put less effort into something then expect less sales, do you think Hollow Knight outsold BOTW even though it was multiplatform? Not on your life - botw was exclusive too, Mario Odyssey too.
Know what these first party games have in common with Nintendo? They cost the same.
Nintendo charging $60 for a game a smaller company would charge $20 for after putting a lot less effort in, is a straight up scam.
Did mumma and papa ever tell you how scams work?
@Ghost_of_Hasashi i mean honestly, do you even realise how ridiculous it is to suggest that its okay for Nintendo to charge more for a product that has less effort put into it because they will sell less than Hollow Knight?
That's some twisted level of fanatic logic there 😳.
So you'd be saying that it's not okay for Team Cherry to charge $60 for Hollow Knight because they would sell more than Metroid Dread?
Wow lol 😆
@Ghost_of_Hasashi oh i just thought of something.
By your logic, Mario Odyssey should have been cheaper than Hollow Knight, because it sold a lot more than Hollow Knight.
So about $10 for Mario Odyssey? Lol.
@RoguePirate
How do you know Nintendo have put less effort into making this game than any other company?
@BenGrimm i didn't say any other company.
I was referring to Hollow Knight.
Unless this game has a solid 100 hours of content and only 3 people working on it, it has less effort put into it than Hollow Knight.
Because Hollow Knight has over 100 hours of content, had 3 people working on it only and came out for $20.
What gives the right for a 60 billion dollar company to make a shorter game, with less content, more people working on it, the right to charge 3 times as much?
Because you're really just paying for a brand and logo. You're paying 3 times as much for a LESSER product because of brand and logo and you're trying to justify it.
It's actually kinda funny.
@RoguePirate
I didn’t try and justify anything, just wandering how you knew Nintendo were putting in less effort than another company. Despite your reply there wasn’t anything to believe it’s the case tho.
@BenGrimm yeah i can't assume that Metroid Dread will be less than 30 hours long just because every single 2D Metroid game has been under 20 hours.
But i have a better chance of being right based on the history than someone who tries to say Dread will have over 60 hours of content, when no 2D Metroid in the history of 2D Metroid has ever been more than 15 hours at most.
@BenGrimm or maybe you're trying to tell me that a game that takes 15 hours to 100% has as much effort put into it as a game that has more than 90 hours?
If so that would be hilarious.
@RoguePirate
Well if hours played is the metric for a good game then I declare Hyrule Warriors the best Switch game ever and should be at least £100 to buy.
@BenGrimm no but think of it like this, i allocate around $50 to 100 dollars on games per month, depending on my budget, bills, ect.. now some months that can be as little as $0 though, so bare that in mind.
So lets say i spend $60 on one game, which is more than half of my max budget for games, and its a game i can finish in under 1 week (3-6 hours of gaming every night after work, depending on how busy i might get), I've just spent most my budget for games per month on ONE GAME that is done in under a week.
That's not exactly good value for money is it?
@BenGrimm length isn't the only metric to factor in, especially as an adult who pays bills - price is an important metric too.
In this instance the price is already more than 50% of my max months budget and the game length will undoubtedly be questionable.
But on the off chance that the game is over 50 hours in available content - meaning it takes me 50+ hours to 100%, then i certainly would consider it - but Metroid hasn't had the best track record in that department, so im not holding my breath.
@RoguePirate
Metroid has a good record in making great games, regardless of price or length. That’s the only thing I’m basing my decision on.
@BenGrimm no worries, nobody's stopping you. We all have a different criteria that we need products to meet before we commit.
@RoguePirate
It’s all good 👍🏻, if Dread fails to impress me then I’ll be more careful with the next game.
Are we really all squabbling about the prices of video games?? Wow…come on guys, you’re better than this! Also, 60 dollars is the going price for new major release switch games regardless of content/completion time.
@RoguePirate From the perspective of having just one platform and the only platform that could play that game yes unless you go the piracy way. Hollow Knight dev could set their price on any amount they feel like it too. My explanation is to tell you why Nintendo kept the $60 price dude. Heck Nintendo could even bump the price up if they feel the game is worth more than $60. The thing is you pay to buy a product from them, doesn't matter if the game is good or not. If you choose to buy it from them and nowhere else you had to pay that price unless you are like me and want to wait next gen when the hype is over and they drop in price at a used vendor somewhere. Still even if the game launch at $60, that doesn't mean it'll stay like that, over time Nintendo will do a sales promotion like their past Player's Choice or Nintendo Select on their best sellers and you could pick them for cheaper around $20-$40. Sadly in this time and era if they did do that it'll be for digital sales only.
When is this game coming to Australia
