Re: Review: Dredge - A Haunting Lovecraftian Fishing Sim That Reels You In

I picked up the deluxe edition, and this is one of my favorite RPGs on the switch. Great gameplay loop. Intriguing narrative. Meaningful upgrades. Graphics and sound are excellent and unique. Interesting world to explore. I agree with the review, but I'd give it a 9/10. In a year when Final Fantasy is too serious to add a fishing minigame, could a fishing RPG be the bigger fish?

Thanks for doing that, that's good to know. I see where you are coming from. When these games were released, I don't remember any reviews talking about the framerate. However, there really is no excuse for this given that it's a 20 year old game. In 2001 I accepted the glitches because it was such an ambitious game, and I would say the same thing now. However, performance is another issue and that really shouldn't be an issue even on the switch.

When I said they were restrained in their marketing I was referring to them showing a short video without any gameplay very close to launch. Compared to Cyberpunk, which hyped it up for several years with Keanu Reeves, 40 minute contrived gameplay footage, false claims about game features.

Compared to Cyberpunk (the point of this article) their marketing was restrained.

@Spiders You said "You can't be definitive in some ways and not in others."

Websters: Something definitive is complete and final. A definitive example is the perfect example.

When they designed Dragon Quest for the PS4 they made the best possible version they could. Then they downgraded for the switch. In terms of graphics, the PS4 version is definitive (the perfect example of their vision for the graphics). In terms of soundtrack the Switch version is definitive.

I know it's not the perfect example, but GTA definitive edition has improvements (GPS, targeting, weapon selection) that are definitive, yet other aspects (rain, fog, framerate) that are not.

Well said. Finally someone with a balanced view of this. I'm enjoying exploring these massively detailed environments, finding the hidden packages and doing taxi missions. These games have so much to offer and the new improvements actually make a big enough difference that I wouldn't go back to the originals. Has anyone noticed that it's way harder to fall off your motorcycle in Vice City? You used to fall off every time you hit the tiniest thing. Such a small but significant improvement.

Well if you don't like sandbox style games then, it's not a bad game. That is your opinion from playing it, but sandbox games require your own creativity in making your own fun by playing with the tools they give you. My favorite things were always causing chaos and then seeing how all the scripted NPCs react or just taking a motorcycle through the most random places.

@meltendo You realize that these games are massive and the reason they cut corners was because they didn't have a massive budget. These games were never going to appeal to the mass market unless they were remade completely. Rockstar hasn't made a new GTA in 8 years. They don't care about this trilogy or crafting new single player experiences because GTA5 online will make them more money in a few months.

In some ways this is the definitive edition. The improvements they made to modernising the controls like the weapon selection wheel, gyro aiming and button mapping make the game so much more playable. Vehicle controls have also improved. It's a mixed bag for sure, but there is some good here. Obviously it's not definitive as there are missing songs. I finished GTA3 and had a great experience. I think the negativity is overblown, but there is nothing wrong with demanding better from these companies.

Obviously you can have your opinion, but on a fundamental level these are not bad games. They have some of the highest metacritic ratings of all time. For good reason.

Story: Interesting characters and narrative inspired by films
Gameplay: Massive, detailed open world, vehicles, weapons
Visuals: Diverse environments, iconic structures, colourful
Audio: Variety of radio stations, great voice actors
Value: 60 hours of story, many extra missions, collectibles

This is a scrappy port of a great trilogy of games. It's a shame that they didn't respect the source material, and the historical significance of these iconic games.

I just finished the story in GTA3 and really enjoyed it. I encountered no game breaking glitches. The framerate is the biggest problem but it’s no worse than the original release. I’m not sure what you meant about changing the brightness and contrast because that wasn’t a problem for me. I also don’t mind the graphical updates, and the controls are so much better (gyro aiming, button mapping and weapon selection wheel). This is nowhere near Balan Wonderworld. These are great games with a few glitches and framerate dips. My main concern is balancing the audio levels. I'd give it a 7/10 at least.
