Here here. I agree. This is what I have my eye on in terms of an inevitable upgrade to a DSi unit at some point in the future. The larger screens will be a nice alternative to the DSlite and the fact that it feels more comfortable in your hands is also certainly appealing.
How do I access the "Classic" vs "Normal" control mode? I see no option for it in the Options menu. Do I have to beat the game first to get the choice?
What's with all of this talk about fairies? Adam, you do realise that either a star or an Angel is typically placed at the top of the tree, right? So really, none of the characters on that tree should be trying to be most like a fairy to get to the top of that arbor.
Now, is Tyson like an Angel? Well unless Angles switch their favourite food to earlobes, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's not one of those either.
Why would we want to see them play Circle of the Moon either? Actually I prefer Judgement to Harmony of Dissonance and Circle of the Moon. I find both of those games to be unplayable. At least I can burn off some anger by playing Judgement. It's certainly not an amazing game, but if you find it for $20, pick it up.
What I want to know is why they don't have Rondo of Blood or Bloodlines on that list. I mean, I'm a huge fan of Simon's Quest, but I'm pretty sure it would be more interesting for people to watch those two games being played than Castlevania II.
I was actually going to ask you what you consider the "flat side-scrolling" beat-em-ups to be covered under. Those games without "depth", or the ability to move up and down from the foreground to the background. A good example I just came across was X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse for the SNES, which all things considered is only mediocre (despite my die-hard adoration of all things X-Men). My favourite game of this style has to be Strider 2 for the PSX which is, in my opinion a super under appreciated "depthless" beat-em-up. Hagane and Shatterhand are other favourites in this sub-genre.
And yes, I think the Top 10 for a site like this might need to be narrowed down to only console games in the genre. It could all get out of hand pretty fast once you realize that the Turtles Arcade, Simpsons Arcade and X-Men Arcade (6 player version, 'natch) would take up most of the list. That's not necessarily a bad thing, except for the fact that this is a console-centric site
Some of my favourites are: Maximum Carnage, Double Dragon II and IV, King of Dragons, Final Fight, Knights of the Round, Turtles in Time, TMNT II: The Arcade Game, Battletoads & Double Dragon (despite how frickin' hard it is), Batman Returns, Captain American & the Avengers (I know its bad, but I love Iron Man), and River City Ransom. Captain Commando is pretty good too but I put it in the same category as Golden Axe and Streets of Rage, which is the "okay, but not great" category.
I didn't realize that the PS2 Capcom collection had the arcade version of KoD rather than the SNES one. That's great! The visuals look fairly close but what about the game itself? Are there more levels in it or something?
Actually that review idea sounds brilliant. I would love to see a SNES look at the genre, but even more I would definitely be interested in seeing you personal Top 5 or Top 10 of the genre, cross-platform. Either way would be great (since IMO the SNES is the system with the best beat-em-ups ever) since the only thing that stands out for me on the NES is Double Dragon 1 & 2 and River City Ransom and the Genesis with Streets of Rage and Golden Axe. I'd love to hear more (especially those hidden gems out there I haven't played yet)!
Thanks for the reply to my comments. I want to make it clear that I am extremely happy that you even took the time to do a review on this game in the first place, so any disagreements we may have over score are secondary to that.
As far as pace is concerned, I actually feel that Streets of Rage is too slow. It just doesn't do it for me. However something like King of Dragons, which also has slow moving characters feels wonderfully paced (though I admit a run would have been nice, though it doesn't break the game). Then you have Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety which has the run feature and that game feels too bogged down in itself, which = slow.
I'm sure there's someone out there who would say I'm crazy in my feeling toward Streets of Rage but I guess its really just a personal taste sort of thing. Heck, up until recently I didn't even like Final Fight. So my personal taste regarding Super Double Dragon is that it is super awesome and I love every minute of it (playing co-op is so much better though its not even funny).
I think we all can agree that DD II is an industry standard for awesomeness.
Oh and for anyone who is a fan of beat-em-ups and shoot-em-ups, may I recommend The Red Star, for PS2? This is a great unspoken gem that combines the two genres elegantly and I would strongly suggest you research and then go out and buy it!
I love the game. Personally I don't think it deserves a 6. Its at least a 7 just for the sheer fun factor of beating up those sprites. There are so many moves and it actually takes some thought and planning to progress through the game. The thing that stood out to me most (the first time I played it) was how it is NOT a simple button masher. You need to keep enemies in front of you at all times, block when appropriate, learn how to chain your combos together, or stun an enemy so you can get in close for a grapple.
Yes, there is repetition but that's part of the genre. Even the best beat-em-ups suffer from that criticism. Turtles in Time may be the best one ever (arguably) but even it falls into that trap. Thing is, if you like beat-em-ups, then you take that in stride. Why not review a shooter and complain that its just button mashing and killing spaceships for half an hour? Why not review a platformer and complain that "there's too much jumping in this game"?
It's not perfect, but the variety of moves alone helps to keep this game exciting and the music really should have been emphasized more on the positive side. This game has some great tunes. Oh, and the run feature? Really? Never would need it. Everything is very close quarters in this game and you honestly do more fighting than walking.
For beat-em-up fans, I hope this review doesn't dissuade you from picking this title up, if you can find it.
Amen. This attitude still surprises me too. Would you rather pay $60 for a disc game that lasts 14 hrs and is crappy to play (which is pretty much what 75% of all "core" games are these days), one where you play it once then put it down forever, or $10 for multi-player, old-school, highly repayable bliss?
Ask yourself this, why is it I still play Mario Bros. 3 more often than any current generation game? Sometimes the best things come in small packages. Can't wait to pick this up!
@Ricardo91 If you're a Star Wars fan, PLEASE don't let people turn you off of such a great Star Wars experience. You'll love it, I promise. This game is not as hard as Mega Man 9 or even Castlevania. Just play it on "easy" and you'll be fine.
This game is great. Yes, its not as good as TESB and ROTJ but its a solid platformer/run-and-gun/adventure game and its difficulty will keep you interested. Its not insurmountable but at the same time it saves you from a Kirby-cake-walk-bore-fest.
Strongly recommended. If you don't have the points, I'd recommend ROTJ as a nice starting point (whenever that is released) before you buy all of them. Otherwise, show Nintendo you're willing to support the VC and buy something from the VC this week!
@BassXO "No. LucasArts releasing Star Wars games is like Nintendo releasing Mario games."
True, but is it still not just as likely that Disney will see other licensed games making a profit and then approach Nintendo about a release agreement? They may not have their own game company to release The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse, but they could make the wheels turn a little easier by agreeing to let it be released in the first place. I hope.
I spent $10 on MLAADL so I can't say I really NEED a new VC game to download (though it would have been nice). Truth be told, I'm still catching up on past greats, like Pulseman and LIT.
If you really want to send Nintendo a message, download more VC titles! Vote with your wallets, not your whining. Go back and download Gate of Thunder, or Earthworm Jim or every other VC game you've been "thinking" about downloading but been putting off. Once there's a spike in VC interest, I think that Nintendo will be willing to push more games out.
Also, has anyone else considered that Square released this game under condition that Nintendo not release anything to compete with it? That way MLAADL will look all the more appealling, and Square will get more sales.
Just bought it. I am really enjoying the experience. The "original" mode is indeed superior to the "arcade", but the fact that it even gives you the option of two wildly different play modes is fantastic. Yes, Contra is better for sidescrolling action, but MERCs is better on the top-down aspect of gameplay. You can't really compare them. Contra's only top-down aspect comes into play infrequently on Contra III and when it does, the controls are pretty terrible.
If you love run n' guns, do yourself a favour and spend the $8. It'll be better than a rental of something new.
These complaints about game length sound pretty winey. Super Mario Bros. is a fantastic game but most of you could beat it in a half hour. Dragon Warrior takes longer to finish than Castevania but the latter is (IMO) a better game and well worth multiple play throughs.
If you're willing to buy (and play) some of these classic sidescrollers which used to cost $60+ on release back in the day, then why all of the fuss over $10 for something today of equally high quality?
Well, stupid rules? Maybe. I understand why they're there. I'd hardly like my online experiences to end up like XBLA's cuss orgies. I agree that the friend codes are at the very least, inconvenient and I'd like to see an alternative method for adding friends in the future. Maybe this is the start of something new?
I'll tell you right now what the Conduit has going for it that trumps any other FPS on the competing consoles: Wiimote controls.
I always hated using analog sticks on FPS after playing with a mouse on my PC. I think Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were exceptions because they were so fickin' amazing and you had no choice-- you HAD to play them on the N64 if you wanted a piece of the awesomeness.
Now that you have a choice between a mouse, wiiremote and the joysticks, I choose the former two, 100% of the time. I can't stand the joystick controls because they are sluggish and unresponsive by comparison. If I want to shoot something I bloody well want to point and click.
I think they're trying to flood the market on purpose. The idea being that since Rockband has appeared to contest their share of the market, they've have to step it up with their own vocals and drums, now they're trying to show everyone that they have more variety. This way when a newcomer is trying to decide between the two, they may be more tempted to go the GH route.
I could care less about DLC. If the game itself is worth its pricetag then I'll be happy. I'd rather just have a solid game then a half made game with DLC-already-made-and-ready-to-go so the developers can milk more cash out of people (ie: RE5, Mega Man 9 and Street Fighter 4).
Finally bought it. Love me this game. I actually forgot how enjoyable it was until I played it again. Yes, it lacks a 2-player format, but I don't have that many to play with nowadays anyway.
I actually prefer this to Mario Kart and I would recommend this to anyone who happens to play single player games more often than not.
The date at the top mentions this will be released at the end of June. It was my understanding from a long while back that the Conduit wouldn't become available until summer (June) as it is. Are they telling us there is yet ANOTHER date to be announced for the release? Is June 23rd the actual current release date, or what?
You'd think that if the new date was pending that nindendolife.com would have put "TBA" instead.
All I'm saying is that if everyone is shocked by the prospect of waiting until June- well, I was already expecting to wait this long. No biggie for me.
Is there anyone who has downloaded this game (besides Corbie whose opinion no offense I usually don't listen to) who hasn't enjoyed it or found it charming?
I agree, this is a must have for action fans. I had next to zero issues with the controls and I found absolutely nothing wrong at all with the mixture of 2D and 3D graphics. The game looks beautiful. I usually agree with everything a review says on this site, but the graphics comment here is a little off. I DID find myself stopping to look at the backgrounds.
You're absolutely right about that. One of the biggest problems with those terms (casual and hardcore) is that they are ill-defined at best. No one really knows what they mean in this context and anyone you ask will give you a different arbitrary definition.
The terms only serve to divide the gamers into "us" and "them" categories, which is the last thing the video game industry needs right now when its being scapegoated as much as it is.
This is the sort of thing you used to see on the playground back in 3rd grade and now it just seems ridiculous. Kids like to make clear seperations and distinctions, usually as you say "for some lame people [to] 'feel' 'special'" or to hide their inadequacies. Once you grow a little older you realize that this binary splitting is neither necessary nor realistic. Yet, again many of us find ourselves in our 20's and 30's talking the same tripe over and over again.
I'm crossing my fingers hoping this comes out for us on Monday. I only played about 5 min of this game when it was released so this will be my first playthrough of the whole thing.
PS: The Adventure of Link is one of, if not my favourite Zelda games. Don't listen to the hate!
Playing these games on the old consoles is great fun sometimes, but I'm debating whether or not it is worth it for me to download them on the VC.
I own Final Fantasy (NES) and Final Fantasy III/VI (SNES) and Final Fantasy IV (DS), so I have the best of the early series available now.
There's something to be said for the ability to save my progress in an instant and then to come back to it later. The Wii gives me the ability to play an RPG like I play a shooter: fast and short (depending on my timetable). I can't do that with the original games- I have to get out of a dungeon and get to a savepoint.
This is actually one of the reasons why I don't play my RPGs as often as other genres. The amount of time that is demanded to invest in even the most user friendly games (Chrono Trigger DS) is still around 15-30 minutes minimum. I think the ability to play FF for short periods at a time with the VC's auto-save feature.
Lazy? Maybe. Would we all have preferred the update to have run games directly off of the SD card? Sure, but its entirely possible that the system can't run things that way- or, if it could, that quality would have dropped as a result.
Personally this is a great compromise and I enjoy seeing my games on that SD "black" menu. Honestly, the update just makes it seem as though the VC has a seperate "game" menu and that the time it takes to transfer onto the system is just your standard loading time for conventional games. In reality, waiting for a PS3 game to load takes a LOT longer than a WiiWare game and I consider WiiWare to have much better games than most of the PS3 library (with the exception of Little Big Planet perhaps).
I've only played this once on the SNES at a friend's house, and back then, I wasn't too into sports games of any kind. Since then I've picked this up on emulator, but I want the authentic Classic Controller experience.
Hardly. I notice you edited you original post too because it didn't make any sense, it was just intended to get a rise out of me. I don't know what your deal is with trying to start something but I could care less about your "talk".
If you have beaten those games, then good work. Glad to hear you've been working through some classics and I hope you try many more in the future. That's what the VC is all about.
I bought this due to everyone's high recommendations and I was not disappointed. Lords of Thunder was my favourite SHMUP and this game matches it. I can't for the life of me determine which one I like better! A very good game with only one minor complaint:
I wish the soundtrack was as loud as LoT. Its hard to hear the rock background music over all the shooting and I think that's a real shame.

Release a game before its done and it will be bad forever,
delay it and it will be good forever.
Re: Review: Bonsai Barber (WiiWare)
Is there anyone who has downloaded this game (besides Corbie whose opinion
no offenseI usually don't listen to) who hasn't enjoyed it or found it charming?Re: Tetris Party Tournament No. 4 Details
If you win the prize for the tournament then you'll get your money back for the puchase
Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword (DS)
I agree, this is a must have for action fans. I had next to zero issues with the controls and I found absolutely nothing wrong at all with the mixture of 2D and 3D graphics. The game looks beautiful. I usually agree with everything a review says on this site, but the graphics comment here is a little off. I DID find myself stopping to look at the backgrounds.
Re: Nintendo Looking to "Re-energize" Game Market
WiiWare is awesome!
Just wait for Explodemon, Swords and Soldiers and the My Life as a King sequel!
Re: Analyst Reckons Wii Investment is "Fools Gold"
@ MrPinguy
Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
I'm crossing my fingers hoping this comes out for us on Monday. I only played about 5 min of this game when it was released so this will be my first playthrough of the whole thing.
PS: The Adventure of Link is one of, if not my favourite Zelda games. Don't listen to the hate!
Re: Two New Swords & Soldiers Gameplay Videos!
Oh man, I LOVED King Arthur's World for the SNES too.
That game was the money.
This is exciting.
Re: USA VC Update: Super Punch-Out!!
Fantastic game.
I'll be buying some more points to download this and Ogrebattle later on. Can't wait for Majora's Mask though!
Re: Final Fantasy Finally Coming to VC
Honestly, I think I may re-purchase these games.
Re: SD Card Game Launching + Arcade Games Available on VC Now!
@ Muzer
Lazy?
I'm a happy camper.
Re: Review: Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)
Can't wait for this to come to N.A!
I've only played this once on the SNES at a friend's house, and back then, I wasn't too into sports games of any kind. Since then I've picked this up on emulator, but I want the authentic Classic Controller experience.
Re: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Re: Gate of Thunder
I bought this due to everyone's high recommendations and I was not disappointed. Lords of Thunder was my favourite SHMUP and this game matches it. I can't for the life of me determine which one I like better! A very good game with only one minor complaint:
I wish the soundtrack was as loud as LoT. Its hard to hear the rock background music over all the shooting and I think that's a real shame.
