@ImpromptuR Are you sure you don't consider toys to be art? What about a Native American doll that was found during an archaeological dig, and now sits in a museum?
@Orwellian87 You're certainly free to argue that banana-tape isn't art. I'd agree with you on that point. But others would argue against you and I. But then at some point, you have to end up circling back around to Marcel Duchamp's Fountain, where he was making these ridiculous "found art" installations for largely for the purpose of poking fun at art critics at the time. And then that in itself becomes the art. That's the problem with art, and art critique: it is open to interpretation.
@Orwellian87 Well, that sort of depends on how you view art, doesn't it? As far as art goes, you can tape a banana to a wall and charge someone hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy it. And people will debate whether or not it is good art. So if video games are art, they could do the same, yeah?
@tourjeff Yeah, they actually fixed it a lot. It is never going to be the best way to play, there is still a scant bit of slow down when a ton is going on, but I feel like the Switch version at this point is a downright respectable experience.
I don't think Gamestop going out of business would be good for the gaming industry. I really can't think of any industry where a the death of a dedicated business, especially one with brick and mortar locations, is a positive.
Toys R Us is a shining example; if you are a toy collector, the demise of that business hit hard. Amazon, Walmart, and Target have yet to serve as acceptable substitutes. I reckon the same would be true of Gamestop.
Every system I've purchased over the past 20-25 years has been from Gamestop, usually a pre-order. I'm not looking forward to the day everyone is rushing Walmart, Target, and Amazon to fill that same gap, given how often I hear of preorders getting cancelled or selling out in mere moments.
The problem with moving away from "one and done" games in favor of continuous life-service games is that a lot of people aren't interested in playing games with no foreseeable end that demand an unknown time investment. Every time you commit to a live service game, you're giving up the capacity to play nearly anything else.
@DogDetective Uh... what game are YOU playing? The latest patch from 10/26 VASTLY improves the experience. Fatalities prior to this patch were "slow motion and out of sync with the audio". Now it is like they turbo-charged the fatalities; those things are FAST. And Cyrax's world-detonating fatality finally works.
Saying the Switch 2 doesn't NEED backwards compatibility is pointless, because the Switch 2 is a luxury entertainment item, and luxury entertainment items don't NEED to exist at all. Video games exist because businesses WANT to sell them and make money, and because consumers WANT to play them. "NEED" is not a part of the equation at all.
What it comes down to is that the Switch 2, and all other video game systems moving forward, should have backwards compatibility, because it should be a standard... so standard that it isn't even thought of as "backwards compatibility". I mean, when was the last time you upgraded iPhones and worried about the data from your previous device moving forward Never, right? Do you think of upgrading your phone as a matter of "backwards compatibility"? Probably not, because there is just a reasonable expectation that it all move seamlessly from one device to the next.
You do know if you hold ZL, you auto-lock onto enemy ships, yeah? Use the photon cannon to take out enemy shields, then fire a single rocket at the enemy. Since rockets immediately overheat, switch back to photon cannons, and keep blasting. Most low-level ships go down with just 1 rocket.
Also, we just got expeditions on Switch, so start an expedition for some unique rewards (which you can claim in your normal save afterwards).
Dang... they really captured the essence of the late 80s, early 90s. I could totally imagine someone with acid-wash jeans and a rat-tail sitting down to game on that.
So the image posted in this article, which I can copy for free, was purchased by someone for $26,000. I own it. They own it. We have equal levels of ownership... why was mine $26,000 less than theirs? lol. How stupid.
I mean... that's neat... but nobody speaks Irish. Even the Irish barely speak any Irish; there's only 170,000 that speak it as a first language. Hell, the made-up language of Esperanto has approximately 100,000 speakers...
Not saying any of this to offend the Irish, but it seems like maybe the time spent localizing it into Irish would have been better spent on a language that more people speak.
@Kiz3000 The tanks are all getting buffs so they can play way more aggressively, which is why they are limiting it to 1 tank. Having 1 fewer tank means the healers should be able to keep the remaining tank, and both DPS, alive more easily.
@XenoShaun The player base can only play, and has only ever played, within the confines of how the game is designed. Saying they should only change the game based on how players play the game would effectively mean they could NEVER change ANYTHING about the game, because any change would alter how players play.
@JR150 I feel ya. They could have communicated it earlier. If it was a matter of scrapping physical in order to get it to run, I'm wondering if maybe that was something they didn't realize until later on.
@JR150 Panic Button had to squeeze every bit of power out of the Switch that they could. The game doesn't even let you presently capture videos, because that would put a ding in performance. The Switch loads faster from digital storage than it does from its game cards; so it may be entirely possible that the game CAN'T run from a physical game card, as it may need those slightly faster digital loading times.
I mean, it is sort of like the ship of Theseus, but not. The premise being the ship of Thes is that the boards are gradually replaced until the ship is no longer comprised of the original parts. The end result would be a ship that looks like the original, but is no longer the original.
This doesn't even do that. This doesn't replace N64 parts with other N64 parts in an effort to keep it looking original; the entire point of this is to make something that is intentionally NOT the original N64. Therefore, I have to state Guinness is entirely wrong here, this it isn't the world's smallest N64, because it isn't an N64. Its like declaring something the most circle-like square.
This is not the world's smallest N64, because it is not an N64. And N64 is the whole of its parts, so while this may have started as an N64, once you start replacing parts, trimming it down, etc., it is no longer an N64.
Eh... if it is anything like the first game, I'll have to pass. I' had heard about the original Panzer Dragoon game for decades, but I never had the chance to actually play it until the HD remake hit the Switch...
I was stunned how underwhelming, boring, and lacking the game was. The controls aren't very good, the movement seems really limited, the combat seems really loose and unrefined, and the game is REALLY SHORT. There aren't any power-ups to pick-up at any point in the game, so what you're capable of at the end of the game is no different than what you can do from the very start.
I felt like 99% of the game was just holding down the attack button, sweeping the reticle across the screen to auto-load targets, and releasing. It doesn't even hold a candle to the original SNES StarFox game. I couldn't believe I had heard all this glowing things about the original game... how it became a beloved classic is beyond me.
The Switch revision that was released last year or so uses Mariko, and it is no where close to running 1080p games consistently. I'm not seeing how we're bumping up to 4k...
How do I never notice frame rate drops? There was a single instance on my playthrough of the demo where I thought "wait, did that just chug?", but even then, I'm not 100% if it did, or it was just me.
@sword_9mm What's funny about the whole cartridge vs disc thing was that Nintendo knew discs were eventually going to be the way to go, they just thought it was going to take longer. They were convinced the Playstation loaded too slowly, and that gamers wouldn't want to wait for load times. Weirdly though, people were willing to put up with long load times... but now that discs load substantially faster, we're now ditching them to go with other solutions that don't have load times. Its like its coming full circle. lol
@TheFrenchiestFry The N64 was more powerful than the PS1, and the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2. Nintendo still lost out on those two for reasons other than power. Nintendo has no reason presently to do anything like what you're suggesting, because that didn't work for them, as where their present strategy does.
@TheFrenchiestFry Why wouldn't it be their permanent thing going forward? If their next system is a handheld that can't connect to a TV, then they are taking a huge, embarrassing step back. If their next console is only a console, then they are putting themselves at a disadvantage against Sony and Microsoft.
Nintendo's strength at this point is its handhelds, not its consoles. Part of the success of the Switch is because it unified Nintendo's development; they no longer have to develop games for two separate platforms simultaneously, like they did with 3DS and Wii U. If they split their console and handheld offerings once again in the future, it puts them at a huge disadvantage.
The problem with how he looks in the Switch version comes down to whatever is going on with the hair.
The Switch version has NEVER been able to get character hair to look normal; Kabal, Liu Kang, Jacqui Briggs, Kano... it doesn't matter which character it is, the hair just has this awful effect to it, like it is made of mesh leggings or something. On top of that, the hair in the Switch version works rather poorly with the lighting, and ends up looking more washed out than it should. Liu Kang, for example, appears to have almost grey hair.
@Devlind A "Pro-dock" is a horrible idea, because it means hurting what makes the Switch unique. You know, the whole ability to play it docked, play it handheld, and play it in tablet mode? Once you throw a "pro-dock" into the mix, you now have games that run only in docked mode, and that are literally non-functional if removed from the dock.
