Re: Soapbox: Fire Emblem’s Future May Not Be In Turn-Based Combat

I don't think its that simple. I guess I'm one of Fire emblems 'New' fans that played Awakening on 3ds first and I think the big difference between Engage and Three Houses was the world building, narrative and presentation.

Three Houses wanted to tell quite a serious story with a fairly belivable setting with a fleshed out history and characters. There was plenty of moral grey area and different motives.

Engage was a far more simple Shiny pure good guys vs the dark/purple bad guys with a world convinently shaped in a circle for our protagonist to walk around in a loop through the story.

I think Engage got credit for its more interesting battle maps and mechanics but I don't think new or old fans were defending the story or character design.

@Ryu_Niiyama
This seems directed at critics of the switch games such as myself so I will say I loved everything from Gen 1-5 Gen 6-7 I did not like as much but still enjoyed a lot.

Its only with the switch games my enjoyment took a total nosedive so I don't think fans are as unappeasable as you think. They just really stripped out most of what I loved about the series recently.

@Unit_DTH They could have released Scarlet and Violet on the PS5 & Xbox Series X and they would still be buggy messes with some of the worst 3d environments I've seen. The fps would just be more stable.

I'm just glad we seem to have dodged Gen 5 remakes. I think the series peaked with Gen 5 and I'd hate to see them get the awful BrilliantDiamond/Shining Pearl treatment they deserve better.

Re: Random: BAFTA's 'Iconic Game Characters' Poll Has Us Scratching Our Heads

As others have said it's a UK based poll and Lara-mania was huge here and went into the mainstream and would be hard to miss for anyone who lived through that time.

In the US Mario consistently polled as the more popular character than Sonic but in the UK Sonic came out on top. I doubt thats the case anymore but it does show how even in English speaking regions there are differences.

Re: Sega's Upcoming Crazy Taxi Revival Will Apparently Be A "Triple-A" Game

Druidsbrook

Its hard to believe considering Sonic their flagship mascot hasn't been triple A since probably Sonic Unleashed. I think Sega set expectations too high for the smaller budgets and time constraints they put on their games.

Yakuza (Like a Dragon) seems to be the exception to this since while I don't play them they seem to put out good quality games.

Re: Sea Of Stars Developer Sabotage Replacing 'The Completionist' NPC

I don't know anything about this paticular situation but its another reminder not to include a homage to real people in your game especially living ones.

It doesn't matter if you watched hundreds of hours of them playing games or 'real-talk' streams you don't know these people they are showing you a single presentable side, just one of many masks we wear.

Re: Zelda Producer Responds To Fans Who Want A More "Traditional Linear" Adventure

Druidsbrook

Its a very similar line to what the Pokemon seniors have said: Open worlds are superior any desire for the older methods must be nostalgia. Which is a frustrating view.

By removing player restrictions you actually make more restrictions in what the game can do narratively and mechanically. If pure open gameplay is so superior why do we still have genres like Metroidvanias which deliberately restrict the player until new powers open the map bit by bit?
