Re: Pachter: Nintendo Has Lost Its "Mojo"

Drawdler

Nintendo make Nintendo games- that's what they've got. Their 3rd party support is less "super" then their competitors, but it's truly a testament to them if their games are so good that people will buy consoles over them.

Yeah, you're only going to buy a Wii U for Nintendo games, but you don't buy a shaver to sharpen pencils.

I don't understand why gamers can't simply agree to disagree. Go ahead and play your Sony games, and I'll play my Nintendo games. The Wii U is the best home console, BUT that's just to ME, and I know that there are going to be people whose best console is something else.

P.S. Header image selector is genius, thank you for bringing a smile to my face!

Re: Miyamoto: GamePad's Touch Screen Primarily Used To Make Navigating Menus Easier

Drawdler

I agree with @Kirk. It sounds like a tiny thing but, really, when you play a game for hours, it's great if you had some way to simplify boring menus. In the long run, simply being able to go "past press start, go to item screen, swap out thing, exit screen, rinse and repeat" can really make the experience so much more pleasant. Instead of having to to this every single time you face a puzzle, you can usually just prepare before the level, and you'll only have to bring out extra things in select situations.

I do hope that we see more truly GamePad-unique experiences soon, though. Nintendo Land was great, and Game and Wario looks great...

Re: New Steel / Ghost Type Pokémon, Honedge, Revealed

Drawdler

"can learn Swords Dance"
That was onixpected...

Jeez though, I don't get the hate towards this Pokémon. I think it looks cool, and it's a cool concept. The design could be a little better executed(to be specific, I think that the eye should have looked different), but I like everything aside from that generic eye and I've wanted a Ghost/Steel for a LONG time. I can nitpick lots of other Pokémon designs from all generations much more than that. I'm looking forward to using her.

Re: Miyamoto: Fresh Experiences Make A New Game, Not New Characters

Drawdler

@Leon_Pryde There's a difference between expanding IPs you have and completely changing them. Yes, Mario has a doctorate, levels up in his spare time, and plays sports at Olympic levels, but the way that Nintendo handle it is great- they expand the range of things possible with their IPs, by creating those experiences as side games. They don't go, "hey, we want to use Mario in an RPG, so let's make ALL OF MARIO INTO AN RPG".

It isn't Crash Bandicoot or Spyro where they made the main games themselves fighting games, and changed the fundamentals of those series, and changed their identity completely. You can use characters in things that they aren't designed for effectively, as long as you don't make the very core of those completely different. That's what alienates consumers. You take something made for one thing, then completely change its identity. It's like how The Big Bang Theory used to be about four nerdy buddies cracking jokes, and now it's a generic, boring drama sitcom. I haven't played Nuts and Bolts so I can't comment, but Mario still does what he does best and what made people love him, unlike other franchises that have tried to completely change their direction.

That's not to say that I wouldn't like new IPs, but in the end it's about the game, and if they don't have to create a completely new world with completely new characters and completely new lore, that means less time spent on that, and more spent on the game so that the game is better. Provided that they have the same quality, I'd rather see 10 unique Mario games than 5 new and different IPs. Story is great and can make great experiences as well, but... Well, I just ranted about it, so I'll just say look at the Mario RPGs which are as different as a new IP would be in my opinion.

Re: Video: Skylanders Swap Force Really Lives Up To Its Name

Drawdler

There are only going to be twelve chapters apart from the two adventure packs, fyi

I'm a huge Skylanders nut, and even I can't justify that.

SA is still the best game Giants lost all the magic of being a Portal Master and felt more like a slippery marketing scheme. It wasn't even very fun to replay it after the first time. The levels were so stretched out that it was just boring... Can't imagine what Swap Force will be like...

Re: First Impressions: Super Mario 3D World

Drawdler

Actually, I get the vibe of the older Crash Bandicoot games from this. Not as zany, but from what I hear this game is focused on speed running and a mix between 2D and 3D - which is pretty similar to Crash Bandicoot 2 and 3 - and that's a good thing in my mind since I love those games. I hope that going fast rewards the player the same way as them. While I enjoyed it in 3D Land, I didn't really feel like I was given anything extra from doing it and that made me move onto other games...

Re: Activision Bringing Skylanders Swap Force And Call of Duty: Ghosts To E3

Drawdler

I want Swap Force but I am very scared that they will make toys too frustrating to find where I live again. SPYRO'S ADVENTURE figures had more stock than Giants for me. That is not a compliment any place but Bizzaro Land. They are giving too much the US and not enough to other countries and they getting the game first now is a very visible red flag... As someone who collects all the figures including those dumb recoloured "Special" variants I don't know I can feel anything besides anger over this... Grrr...
They had better show a BUTTLOAD of information at E3. We have not had any news until the last two weeks... And no, that's not an exaggeration. In fact, said news composed of just leaks.

Re: Feature: The Humble Origins of Animal Crossing

Drawdler

I think that Wild World helped it a lot. My dad and I can stand neither the GameCube nor Wii game because we don't have the chance to use the TV for games nearly as much. But we both love the DS games because Animal Crossing is just so much more suited to portable play. I'm looking forward to playing New Leaf and Skylanders with him. I wonder how we would react to a Wii U game with off-TV play.

Re: Mutant Mudds Developer Muses on Wii U Design

Drawdler

I agree with him. Even though I like the name Wii U it confuses casual consumers. Personally, I think that GameCube purple would have been cool to contrast the green one as colours on the opposite of the spectrum! A metallic silver like the DS Phat would be a third option for people who want a less jump-out colour for their console.
And emeralds are my favourite, so I love greens, if that lime one had come out I would buy it cdhssjhdhwdcwhjhdebedcgdgerror:notimevalue
Ultimately, I would just like to see a console that has any easy way to switch shells a-la the GBA Micro. We already play games on our consoles lots, imagine the time you could have customising them to suit yourself! They could bundle several shells with it, and have an option to order more limited edition ones, plain coloured ones, and custom prints via Club Nintendo. It's just a dream... Sigh...

Re: These Screens Show What NES Games Would Be Like Today

Drawdler

I prefer playing games for fun and to kick back, so I prefer to play less difficult ones.
However, the challenge of these games is a large part of their charm. I may play Skylanders, New Super Mario Bros. and Crash Bandicoot, but it doesn't mean that I don't see the appeal in or don't play games like NES Kid Icarus, Monster Hunter, and NES The Legend of Zelda or harder options of games in general.

Still, these screens are pretty accurate

By the way, regarding tutorials... Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure on the 3DS has a pretty wonderful one. Besides loading dialogue, literally the only tutorial in the game is that you press Y for your first attack, X for secondary, and A to sprint, and you only see the buttons. The first level is actually fun to play, instead of being an unbearable hand holder just to show noobs how to play via boring cutscenes, and I wish that more games would do something similar. It's easy to figure out that Y is the attack button when the prompt is above an enemy and pressing it makes you attack...

Re: Nintendo Won't Be Holding A Large-Scale Press Conference At E3 This Year

Drawdler

I'm with the people saying that this isn't really going to affect people who do follow Nintendo Direct, but will lose Nintendo potential attention from those who don't.
I think that Iwata may be trying to experiment with wether this affects them in a large enough scale to matter very much, but it's not really the wisest time to do that.
If it means even more epic Directs though, I'm fine with this choice as a gamer!
