@jn2002dk I didn't call anyone a loser, that's all on you. Sensitive much?
As to the arguments I supposedly didn't address, I'm not sure how to tackle the one about it not being a game. I mean, er, it is? But clearly it's not the type of game you enjoy and that's fine. As to the, "liberal social agenda" it's pushing, gay people existing in the world is not an agenda, it's reality. I wonder if you realize how claiming otherwise makes you sound?
This has always been a highly divisive game, so I knew there'd be some interesting comments here and I wasn't disappointed.
Basically, if your criticism of the game mentions, "social justice" or "pushing agendas" you've already lost. Also, harping on the whole, "it's not even a game" thing just shows you have no actual cogent argument against it. You don't have to like it, but if those are the best complaints you have against it, then dragging them back out every time the game gets mentioned isn't a good look.
@Crono1973 Uh huh, sure. Tell me, do you go to other websites and complain that they don't run enough stories about old out of date consoles or is it just this one?
@Crono1973 so you're upset that Nintendo's current hardware is the primary focus of a Nintendo news site and the Nintendo fans that frequent it? Cool, have fun with that.
@Crono1973 So you're upset that this website focuses primarily on the current Nintendo console/handheld and not older consoles and handhelds that are discontinued or for which support is winding down? Oooooookay.
I understand the appeal of a new title but I guess in the end I can't help asking myself what a new Mario Kart title could do that couldn't be done equally well with DLC for the one that's already out?
Pretty good week. I managed to get Bomb Chicken a couple weeks early due to an eShop error and that was really good, plus I've super been looking forward to Pool Panic, it looks like a stupid good time.
I really enjoyed the game but felt it was a bit light on content, so I'd be down for more levels as DLC. Hopefully free DLC since the game feels a little overpriced. Honestly though, even if it's not free I'm sure I'd buy it because the games really good and I'd definitely be on board for more however they want to do it.
@Magrane As far as I've heard the only physical edition planned for this is from Limited Run Games. Those are notoriously hard to get your hands on because they really are limited to a single run and always sell out fast.
@geshem I had this problem until I realized that if one stack of bombs is too close to another stack of bombs, they'll all go off in a chain reaction. Once you realize this it's a simple enough thing to keep an eye on placement in situations where you've gotta quickly build one stack of bombs after another.
Personally, I found the game just hard enough. It never took me more than a half dozen or so tries to beat any one level with all gems acquired. The final boss took a few more tries than that, but I had fun with the game and never felt it got too frustrating.
I actually got to play this a couple weeks back as I was able to snag it when the game was briefly put up on the eShop for purchase on the June 28th (the original release date before it was briefly delayed) by mistake. Great game, could do with a bit more content though. It was all over a bit too quickly, though I guess it's better to leave them wanting more than to not deliver the goods in the first place.
@G-Boy If you don't want to support mobile games on Switch that's fine, it's your prerogative, but not only have plenty of mobile ports come to other consoles, but at least in the case of the PS4 so has some embarrassingly incompetent crapware. Stuff like Life of Black Tiger, Skylight Freerange, Dragooned and Horse Racing 2016, just to name a few. I mean, at least Nintendo actually seems to curate what games are allowed onto the Switch and the mobile ports that come to it are, whether you like them or not, at least competently made games and not embarrassing junkware.
@G-Boy So you think it looks good but you're not buying it because it was originally a mobile game? Okay.
A good game is a good game regardless of where it comes from. There are a lot of decent platformers on mobile that I've avoided simply because trying to control those games on a touch screen sucks. With proper controls on a proper console controls I figure a lot of them would be worth picking up as long as the price is right.
@Fake-E-Lee Yeah, the game's challenging without being frustrating and I like that players can choose not to turn in their gems for extra lives if they want to make the game harder for themselves. I mean, that's a nope from me personally, I couldn't imagine trying to get through some of the later stages with only one try, but I know there are always people out there trying to test their skills.
I mostly play in docked mode at home, but I have a night shift job where I'm on my own with a lot of downtime, so it's great to be able to take my Switch with me to get some gaming in. The downside, of course, is the absolutely pitiful battery life. It would be nice to have some sort of charger to keep your system going while playing in handheld mode, but I'm scared to try any 3rd party solutions as I've heard they can fry your system. Leave it to Nintendo to overlook such an obvious necessity.
@Fake-E-Lee It looks like it was an error on somebody's part. I saw the game up for preorder yesterday so I went ahead and bought it since I've been looking forward to it and saw no reason to wait. It was definitely a preorder and the release date was listed as the 12th of July. I didn't realize until this morning that the game had downloaded to my system and was playable, but I also notice that the preorder listing on the eShop has been removed, so definitely somebody's screwup. I'm certainly not complaining as it's a great game and certainly nice to get it a couple weeks early.
Really looking forward to this and Pool Panic from Adult Swim Games which is out the following week. Between these and Octopath it's looking like a pretty good July for Switch owners.
Not sure what to make of this one. The premise sounds interesting, but the fact it began as a smartphone title gives me pause. It'll be something to keep an eye on at any rate.
@Prizm Nah, Square could just crap out nothing but ports and rereleases if all they were interested in was turning a quick buck. Octopath is looking legit amazing and indicates that they're taking the Switch seriously. Of course, it looks like a lot will depend on how Octopath does, but more games in that vein seems like a future worth supporting to me.
Good review, but it does perhaps play up a referential nature of the game a bit too much. The references are certainly there, but the humor comes more from puns and silly dialogue than from nostalgic pop culture references.
@Kalmaro "See, that's what worries me. Because you'll hear other people say how they liked her and how identifiable she is and I'm wondering what that says about said person."
Your exact words, dude. I can't see the comment from the Qwerty person you're responding to for some reason so I don't know what they said, but the implied judgement in your words, that it apparently worries you that someone would identify with Mae and you wonder what that says about a person, is there whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.
Mae is certainly not a traditional video game hero, she is flawed and broken and deeply troubled and a bit self-involved and does bad if mostly harmless things sometimes and doesn't always treat her friends very well, but she's also funny and creative and she does truly care about her friends and she's trying to be a better person and by the end of the game she's found, if not quite a way to do that, then at least a way forward that might put her on the path. In other words, she's almost TOO human, which is a bit ironic considering she's a cat. I find that more interesting than most one-note video game protagonists, though it's usually not a huge problem because in most games the story doesn't actually matter all that much.
@Kalmaro What does a person identifying with Mae say about them? Most likely that they too suffer from depression and anxiety, or that they just relate to the existential angst of a directionless young twenty-something trapped somewhere between adolescence and adulthood. Mae is not a very, "likeable," character, though I personally liked her just fine, but for some of us she is EXTREMELY relatable. If you find nothing in her to relate with, you should probably be grateful more than anything, I suppose. However, hinting that you think relating to Mae might hint at some moral failing in a person is not cool. If you don't understand, then good for you. Sorry you didn't enjoy the game. It's my game of the year for 2017, personally.
@Quorthon Who knows, the developers of Rainbow Curse may have been inspired on some level by ClayFighter, but GrailUK's point seems to the that the timing of this announcement suggests that the release of the new Kirby game may be a factor in Interplay making that announcement now. Or, possibly, at all. Of course, given that Interplay has been struggling for years, has managed little in the last decade beyond putting some of its old games on Steam and GOG and their last announced revival of ClayFighter never materialized, it's better not to get too excited about this announcement until Interplay has something concrete to share.
@SteveW The level editor was part of the original game, but could only save four levels and the save function required an accessory never released outside Japan, since cartridge-based saves didn't come along until about a year later. So, an old feature made usable by current hardware.
@unrandomsam Yes, it's JUST LIKE books with cliffhangers . . .
You know, some DLC is undeniably bad, some is worth it, the claim that it's all held back content is childish paranoia. I have yet to see a logical argument against DLC as a whole.
@XCWarrior So, something multiplayer FPSs still do and one company that gives all of its DLC for free (That, by the way, rakes in the money selling other people's games through its online storefront. Other publishers are focused on selling their own games.) proves what exactly? It doesn't prove me wrong. DLC is not a scam, it's a revenue scheme. You don't have to buy it.
Valve do charge for one thing in TF2 - hats. Some DLC is worth is, some isn't. The vast majority of it is hats, as in you don't have to buy it, you don't need it to enjoy the game, you can ignore it as I do, or froth at the mouth over the very existence of it, like you're doing.
You've allowed your hatred of DLC blind you to sense, reason and reality. There's no arguing with someone like you. Go froth in the corner some more, I'm done with you.
@LEGEND_MARIOID Eh, sometimes they'll go overboard on the DLC a little, like all the ridiculous cosmetic DLC for Saints Row the Third and Sleeping Dogs, but I don't consider it an insult. You know who pushes stuff like that? Publishers in trouble who don't understand how DLC works and think it's free money. I find that funny. Desperation can be amusing. THQ is history now and Squeenix is circling the drain. I can't say I feel sorry for them.
@XCWarrior That's just it, you don't have to pay for anything. You don't lose out on anything by not having the Coin Rush stages in NSMB or the additional content in Fire Emblem, both of which are complete games with a lot of content and in the case of Fire Emblem got a good bit of free DLC on top of the paid stuff. It's completely optional stuff that those who are interested can buy and those who aren't can safely ignore. Honestly, a few companies have been pretty crappy with their DLC policies butfor the most part, I see it done responsibly more than not. I've encountered very little DLC that wasn't obviously additional content on top of a complete game and in most of the cases where it did feel a little like stuff was held back, it was stuff I could do without. Your claims of developers holding back content and lying about it is not supported by reality, but whatever. Enjoy your fantasy world of adolescent cynicism, Captain Emo.
@StarDust They're releasing the game on disc for those who don't own NSMBU, but it's not out until August (July in Europe and Japan) and will cost 10 dollars more than the download.
No, 90% of people are okay with DLC as long as the game it's released for is complete and doesn't feel compromised for the sake of selling additional content. Either you didn't read the poll results very closely, or you're ignoring what people actually said so you can make a cheap point based on your own prejudices.
I'm not against DLC in principle, but it really depends. I won't waste money on cosmetic items for games, but I'll consider map packs, mission packs or additional characters provided the price is fair for the content provided.
To the people wondering how much Nintendo paid for this advertisement, I'm not sure you're aware how late night talk shows work. Half the time is spent talking with people who have something to promote: a new movie, a new tv show, a new book, a new album. When it's a video game, suddenly it's a bad thing? It's promotion, it's clever promotion and no, they didn't pay for it, the ability to promote their product on a popular tv show is the payment. Jeez, people.
I don't necessarily mean as DLC, but this reminds me of how much I'd like to see further expansions of the Mario franchise featuring supporting characters.
Another Princess Peach game would be great, maybe with Daisy and Birdo along for the ride as playable characters as well.
My ultimate dream however is Wicked Wario Bros. a Wario and Waluigi centric platformer that would mix elements of traditional Mario platforming with elements from the Wario Land games.
It would start out seemingly in an alternate version of the Mushroom Kingdom where Wario and Waluigi are the heroes and the Mario Bros. can only look on jealously. Then, after you beat the game in a boss fight against a Mario and Luigi whose jealousy has driven them to extremes, you find out the whole thing was in Wario's head and the two have actually spent the whole time ripping off the Mushroom Kingdom. You then unlock a set of bonus levels about what really happened, with Mario and Luigi chasing after the Wario Bros. and cleaning up their mess.
It should be noted that all Sakurai is doing here is acknowledging that tweaks will be necessary to make the game work on 3DS. He's saying nothing about 3DS holding back the Wii U version, that's all on the person writing the article. Relax people, it'll be okay.
For what's it's worth, I've heard that the maximum possible size of a 3DS cart is 8gb. Really, I'm not seeing what the limitation is here beyond graphics. Maybe I'm missing something here.
Obviously the 3DS version won't look as good as the Wii U, but I don't see how the 3DS hardware would limit the roster. I don't know how good it was, but I do know that one Shonen Jump fighting game had like 50 playable characters and 300 characters all together with support characters factored in and that was on the DS!
Also, great rap and I love how gamer friendly and just geek friendly in general Jimmy's show is. It's awesome that he'll be hosting the Tonight Show soon. I might actually watch is soon.
Down with Leno! Don't let the door hit you on the way out, old man!
Currently I'm dividing my time pretty equally between AC: New Leaf and Fire Emblem: Awakening, along with short daily sessions with Crosswords Plus and Brain Age: Concentration Training. Plenty more games just sitting on my SD, I'll get around to them once Fire Emblem's off my plate. The other three are pretty much part of my daily routine for the foreseeable future.
I loved the Shining Force games on the Genesis and never got to play this, so I snatched it right up. Glad to hear it holds up pretty well. Now then, how about Shining Force 1 & 2 for 3DS Virtual Console? They'd be an instant buy for me, not hesitation. Hell, there's a lot of Genesis games I'd like to see on 3DS. Not sure why Nintendo chooses to focus so much on handheld games for 3DS Virtual Console, the 3DS can certainly handle any SNES or Genesis game they throw at it. How about some TurboGrafix 16 games while they're at it?
Really, the Virtual Console scene on the 3DS is pretty disappointing. It could be so much more than it is and there's no good reason why it isn't.

Re: Video: Reggie Shows Off Wii U to Jimmy Fallon, Hilarity Ensues
To the people wondering how much Nintendo paid for this advertisement, I'm not sure you're aware how late night talk shows work. Half the time is spent talking with people who have something to promote: a new movie, a new tv show, a new book, a new album. When it's a video game, suddenly it's a bad thing? It's promotion, it's clever promotion and no, they didn't pay for it, the ability to promote their product on a popular tv show is the payment. Jeez, people.
Re: Talking Point: New Super Luigi U Opens The Door For Quick Expansions in Other Franchises
Re: Super Smash Bros. Will Have The Same Character Roster On Both Wii U And 3DS
It should be noted that all Sakurai is doing here is acknowledging that tweaks will be necessary to make the game work on 3DS. He's saying nothing about 3DS holding back the Wii U version, that's all on the person writing the article. Relax people, it'll be okay.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Will Have The Same Character Roster On Both Wii U And 3DS
@Benjelo
For what's it's worth, I've heard that the maximum possible size of a 3DS cart is 8gb. Really, I'm not seeing what the limitation is here beyond graphics. Maybe I'm missing something here.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Will Have The Same Character Roster On Both Wii U And 3DS
Re: Weirdness: The Roots Perform an Awesome Mario Rap on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Also, great rap and I love how gamer friendly and just geek friendly in general Jimmy's show is. It's awesome that he'll be hosting the Tonight Show soon. I might actually watch is soon.
Down with Leno! Don't let the door hit you on the way out, old man!
Re: Weirdness: The Roots Perform an Awesome Mario Rap on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
People keep calling Luigi a coward. Maybe he does get a little spooked, but he never backs down. I'd hardly call that cowardice.
Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue Fourteen
Re: Review: Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya (3DS eShop / Game Gear)
