We don't normally celebrate Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter anniversaries, but we'll make an exception for the former Nintendo 64 mascot Banjo-Kazooie, as Rare has issued a timely reminder via its official Twitter account.
Yep, this time last year we couldn't believe it when the bear and bird were announced for the ultimate entry in the Smash series. At the time, Masahiro Sakurai even told fans to go and check out the original Banjo-Kazooie game on Xbox One.
Surprisingly, Microsoft had no problem with the character appearing in Smash Bros - with the Head of Xbox Phil Spencer explaining how the company already maintained "great relationships" with Nintendo's third-party team.
Banjo Kazooie's composer Grant Kirkhope described it as one of the "biggest" moments of his career when his music was featured in the character's reveal trailer. He also composed the music for the Spiral Mountain stage.
Are you still playing as Banjo-Kazooie in Smash Bros. Ultimate one year on? Is this your favourite DLC character? Leave a comment below.

I remember sitting on the couch with my friend and freaking out when we saw the jiggy bounce on by. Goooooooood times
Time flies by quickly. It still amazes how many people still remember Banjo-Kazooie, although they only had a handful of games under their belt.
I wasn't really a Square-Enix fan, so Hero being announced was just a "meh" from me....but of course Nintendo had to surprise even me with yet another character announcement. lol
I haven't gotten around with playing him myself, though....or any of the DLC characters for that matter. >.< (...well, besides Piranha, lol)
I main him and king k rool
Better title would be: Its been one year since Nintendo's E3 2019 Presentation.
RIP E3 2020.
It's been two years since Daisy was revealed for Smash Bros. Ultimate.
While her strength is the same as Peach, her look, voice, and animations all set her apart.
Banjo-Kazooie is one of my favorite games of all time, so finally seeing the bear and bird back, and on Nintendo no less, was simply amazing to me.
Hey Microsoft, can we get Banjo-Threeie now? Or Kazooie-Tooie remakes? Rare Replay for Switch?
Conker is never happening. (to young to play the games to)
@AnnoyingFrenzy
No because they idiotically treat Switch as a advertising platform eg. Ori was clearly ported to Switch to hook people into getting a Xbone for the sequel so you can use to infer why they bafflingly didn’t bring the Banjo games to Switch, this is obviously really dumb but MS is infamous for not understanding what people want.
@SalvorHardin Hey though, if they do make a Banjo-Threeie, they could put the original on Switch to market it!
Seriously though, Microsofts neglect for the series really bums me out.
I like how people praise this as a great achievement for Banjo-Kazooie. This character only panders to a vocal minority of fans that already owned the Smash Bros. product.
He's treated in the Nintendo bubble like he's Sonic the Hedgehog, yet records have indicated that he hasn't even sold no less than 7 million copies globally since 1998. These same fans even admit they refused to buy Nuts & Bolts.
Dragon Quest sold over 80 million copies as a franchise, so that's business as usual.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Oh great! Yeah! Let's help Microsoft some more!
Being in a country that’s so divided it’s nice to see 2 sides come together, even tho I’m sure money helps make this happen. In the surface tho, this looks nice.
Now how about those Arms representatives??
Ignore the nay-sayers.
Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie on Switch would be great.
Cough Perfect Dark would be great as well Cough
I'm not the biggest Banjo fan, but I was on "team real" for the leaks so it was pretty hype to be right, and pretty cool to get another platformer rep.
I never found out whether that last scene with Bulbasaur was supposed to reference something...
@backup368 you sir are a Numpty! Banjo Kazooie is amazing and was revered by most people who played it for a reason. Hell there has even been several user created levels and a level editor created by it’s community. If Microsoft had any sense they would use their Rare IP it still holds a lot of value. Nuts and Bolts was just never the right idea, it would be like Zelda’s next mainline game being a Lego building game or something.
@backup368 Sounds like you have some personal issues you need to work out against the character. Who cares if the franchise didn't sell as well as Sonic or that its owned by Microsoft? I certainly dont and I'm not sure why you do. Also I will fully admit to buying and loving Nuts and Bolts.
I was exited about this too, and i wasn't exited for a Smash character reveal since Pac-Man was revealed for Smash 4.
I cant stop playing smash... I bought the pass, even if so far I only mained terry, I don't regret not even for a second.. even byleth that peoplel trowed tomatoes, I love play against him.. i could easily use him also.. even if banjo was a blast, imo, he is the "most normal" among the dlc.. normally i'll be picking the next pass (even if I dont care about arms) but i bet the char will be fun..
@backup368 It is true that Banjo-Kazooie didn't sell that much as Sonic or has as man games as the Blue Blur, but those games are still very beloved because they were really good and ages also quite well.
That Banjo reveal was brilliant, nice to see Rare themselves posting this! Honestly after getting Banjo-Kazooie I barely cared who the other fighter pass characters were. Nintendo and Microsoft made so many happy
For me its "Has it only been one year?". In the time since he was announced, I moved, had a child, and started an amazing job. Mostly the child thing tho
People said Toon Link was not going to be in Smash 4 because he was already driving the Spirit Train.
People said Mewtwo and Lucas were not coming back in Smash 4, they also said Trophies will never be upgraded into Fighters and that was the reason.
People said Cloud was never going to be in Smash because Final Fantasy VII was never on a Nintendo console.
People said Bayonetta was never going to be in Smash because she is too sexy, her game is too violent and she uses guns.
People said Snake was never coming back because Konami only cares for pachinkos, and Kojima left the company, same for Simon Belmont that was never going to be in Smash.
People said Ridley was never going to be in Smash because he is too big and could not work as a Fighter.
People said K. Rool was never going to be in Smash because he is dead, irrelevant, missing for 10 years and was replaced by other villains.
People said Bandana Dee was never going to be in Smash because he is just a generic mook, a Goomba with a hat, while he is not in Smash as a Fighter, Piranha Plant is.
No one said that Piranha Plant was impossible and never going to be in Smash, because no one even talked about Piranha Plant before the reveal, no one wanted the Plant either, but after a Piranha Plant joined, people should have realized no one is impossible as long as its a videogame character, this list should have stopped here, but no, the list continues.
People insisted that Snake and Bayonetta don't count, and characters that are too violent and use guns cannot be in Smash, and Joker proved them wrong again.
People insisted that Cloud doesn't count and characters without a connection to Nintendo cannot be in Smash, and Joker proved them wrong again.
People said Hero/Edrick was never going to be in Smash because the Dragon Quest series is only popular in Japan.
People said that Banjo was never going to be in Smash because he is owned by Microsoft, which was actually a good point, but they also said that he is dead, irrelevant, literal who, he has no importance to the history of Nintendo or videogames, he is missing for over 10 years, only boomers care about him, his DLC would be a failure and not give any money to Nintendo, third-party characters need relevance, and if they were going to add a character from Microsoft, it should be Steve from Minecraft.
People also said that Smash Bros. is only for Japanese characters, no Western characters, and Banjo broke a 79-Hits Combo.
People said Terry was never going to be in Smash because no one knows who he is and he was never a requested character, or because there are other SNK characters better than him, or said that no SNK characters were coming to Smash because no one knows this company or what games they made.
People said Smash Ultimate was only going to get one Fighter Pass, no more DLC after that.
People said that DLC was not going to have more Nintendo characters and we got Byleth.
People said that ARMS was never going to have a Fighter in Smash because that game failed in sales and people forgot about it quickly.
And maybe in a few days, we will get Spring Man and prove wrong the people who said characters who are already Assists, Spirits and Mii Costumes can't be DLC.
@Obito_Sigma it's from a level in Banjo-Tooie where you have to sneak up to a giant sleeping snake in order to grab a jiggy.
As for Hero...I think I hate him(as a fighter) as much as I hate Inkling and Isabelle, they are so cancerous to go against.
@Blooper987 my school had exams that week and we just finished our exams. We got our phones back and I went right to Ninteneo e3 and saw the reveal just in time
@Arkay not as cancerous as going against byleth and ness mains
@quinnyboy58 "you sir are a Numpty! Banjo Kazooie is amazing and was revered by most people who played it for a reason. Hell there has even been several user created levels and a level editor created by it’s community."
Around the time Banjo-Kazooie was on the N64, you had Tomb Raider which was a far bigger success, and it had a level editor created by the developers for PC players.
"If Microsoft had any sense they would use their Rare IP it still holds a lot of value. Nuts and Bolts was just never the right idea, it would be like Zelda’s next mainline game being a Lego building game or something."
That's exactly why they wanted Banjo-Kazooie in Smash Bros. so that if they made another game again they'll know you'll buy a Series X. Bravo Nintendo.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Because they're pouring money down a bottomless pit. The only company that benefits is Microsoft. The only fans who wanted this character were only going to spend $6 on it. That's not how guest characters work.
I bought the dlc of banjo that same day because I wanted to show support for the character in hopes of convincing them to give us banjo threeie, I really want that game
@backup368 "That's not how guest characters work" Except it is isn't it, cause they did it.
Look, I dont care about your hatred for Banjo or Microsoft, but crying about it 1 year later is a bit asinine dont you think?
It’s been 1 year since I screamed very loudly
@AnnoyingFrenzy "Except it is isn't it, cause they did it."
They did it, which makes as much sense as Sakurai putting a fork in his toaster. You can, but does that mean you should? LOL The point of guest characters is so that you can sell the game to more people outside your current fanbase. That is how companies like Capcom, Namco, Tecmo Koei, SNK, NetherRealm and others make money with their fighting games. The DLC isn't just for the Smash die-hards.
"Look, I dont care about your hatred for Banjo or Microsoft, but crying about it 1 year later is a bit asinine dont you think?"
Then there's no need to have this article either. For a DLC character to get an "anniversary" is so hokey.
I could have sworn that was over two years ago.
This year has really screwed with my perception of time.
When's that gosh darn ARMS character coming out? I'm ready for a SSBU DLC character that isn't just a regular dude, which we haven't gotten since Banjo-Kazooie, IMHO!

It’s called Good-Business, it doesn’t have to make sense.

Just like this Childish temper and response you have with this Article celebrating with the Fandom of the Product, way more Hokey coming from the commenter than the Article 😒
