Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 12th)

BandeeOfTheStars

I recently discovered the masterpiece that is The Legendary Starfy for DS (only 12 years late to the party lol) and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with it. I ordered an import copy of Starfy 4 as well so there's more where that came from.

Great series for any Kirby fan, has all the charm and pure fun of Kirby while still retaining its own spirit in the gameplay department.

I played the SMB Edition on 3DS and beat it to the end, but never beat the special worlds. I never beat P&DZ either. I did enjoy the game though, and have picked it up once or twice since. P&D Gold is currently $15, so that means it would be discounted down to $5--not a bad deal at all.

Have also wanted to get P&DX, but without a Japanese 3DS, I don't think that'll be an option. Stupid region lock...

Nice! Must have been a whole lot of work, I'm sure.

As for the question of modding legality (referring to US laws), well, emulation is definitively legal reverse engineering, while it's definitively illegal to pirate games you don't own. ...That's about all we know, really. A lot of this question lies in the Fair Use exception, which is generally vague but essentially comes down to "am I infringing on someone else's profits by doing this". My interpretation is that, in most cases, it should be perfectly fine to rip a game you own, or even to download a game you own if you could achieve the exact same result by ripping (though say, if you own BoTW on Switch, it would be illegal to download the Wii U version). As long as you don't share it, it's fair game...although you probably are infringing if you emulate the game on a device with an official port of said game. As I said, it's kinda vague. And no, pirating GameCube games would still be illegal because, even though Nintendo isn't making any money off of them, they still own the rights to rerelease them at any time, and it can still be seen as infringement if they never port it if, say, you choose to pirate Double Dash instead of buying MK8.

It's a complicated question and it really has no definitive answer--there is very little legal precedent. I found this article very enlightening, from which I pull many of the above extrapolations: https://www.howtogeek.com/262758/is-downloading-retro-video-game-roms-ever-legal/

Re: Feature: Best Super Nintendo (SNES) Games

BandeeOfTheStars

@JJtheTexan Yeah I can see that--Kirby is the king of late life releases after all, especially on SNES with a late life main game released after another late life main game with yet another spinoff released after that in Japan. But I am hoping that most take the opportunity of Switch Online to try it out.

Look, I'm glad Kirby Super Star is on the list, but where the heck is Kirby 3? Both are wonderful installments in the series that deserve more recognition.

Most of the other usual suspects are here, at least. Congrats to Mario World and Yoshi's Island!

Re: The Wii U First Launched Eight Years Ago Today

I love my Wii U. Tons of great games, some of which those who skipped out on it will probably never see (Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Paper Mario Color Splash) --but at least they have their share of the best ones, thanks to 3DS and Switch (SM3DW, NSMBU, MK8, BOTW, Yoshi). It does have a very robust VC that even includes N64, GBA, and DS games--while I prefer playing the latter two on my actual handhelds, VC is certainly a very affordable option for these games, and one that those who skipped out on it will likely never see.

The console may have failed commercially, but love it or hate it, Switch wouldn't be where it is now without it--and be honest, there's at least one Wii U game in your top 5 most played Switch titles. As for me, still a proud Wii U owner to this day--and yes, I still play the system. Genuinely one of the best multiplayer systems around, and the GamePad feels really nice in the hands.

Re: Soapbox: An Ode To The 3DS, Nintendo's Workhorse Console

BandeeOfTheStars

I remember I first got my 3DS a good while back, in December 2014, and man, it was everything I'd ever dreamed of. I had a DS Lite before it, but my parents would only get me preschool edutainment games for it--and not even the games like Brain Age and Big Brain Academy that Nintendo published. As such, the 3DS was pretty much my first time truly experiencing the greatness of Nintendo on the go, and I cannot overstate just how incredible it was. I started with NSMB2 and Mario Golf, and was later introduced to Mario Tennis, Mario & Luigi, Yoshi's Island, and a number of rather unique Mario Parties through the 3DS. It's amazing just how much I got out of the system from Mario alone, with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team remaining perhaps my favorite game of all time. Man, what a great system.

But all good things come to an end, and my 3DS broke through a series of unfortunate events in late 2018. I dropped my 3DS on a tile floor one too many times, and the left hinge gradually started to deteriorate until the final blow was dealt by...my reckless siblings playing kickball indoors with a giant inflatable fitness ball. Siblings, right? But if it weren't for that, I probably wouldn't have been so motivated to get a summer job over the next 19 months so I could buy a new one and enjoy a bunch of DS and 3DS games I missed. Obviously in that time I've become a big fan of a few Nintendo series other than Mario, particularly Kirby, and realized just how much more I'd missed than that highly-anticipated Bowser's Inside Story remake. So many years of fun and enjoyment from the system, and it still has more to offer.

Rest in peace, 3DS. And thanks for staying in production throughout those 19 long months. But I won't miss you. You know why? Because I'm still playing your games.

Re: Part Time UFO, The Latest Switch Game From HAL Laboratory, Is Available Right Now

BandeeOfTheStars

The mobile version was absolutely wonderful, and I'm considering double-dipping since there seems to be a significant amount of new content. The price of $9 was a little steeper than expected (the mobile version was only $4) but I have no doubt it will be worth every penny, especially to those who have never played the original.

HAL makes great games, y'all. Always look for that name on the title screen.

Re: Poll: What's The Best 3D Mario Game?

BandeeOfTheStars

Galaxy games are my favorites. 10/10. (I prefer Galaxy 2 personally, but they're both so amazing it doesn't really matter.)

64, Sunshine, and Odyssey are all about equally great, and I gave them all 9/10. Sunshine's my personal favorite of the three.

3D Land and World are bottom for me, but they're still easily 8/10 games. 3D World's more like 8.5 because of multiplayer.

Re: Nintendo Reminds Us The Switch Online Service Now Has Over 80 Classic Games

BandeeOfTheStars

I doubt N64 games are coming but it would be really cool to see. GB games would be neat too, and I can see that being a realistic possibility. Hopefully with the enhanced SGB graphics for games like DK '94 and Kirby 2. Fingers crossed!

As for SNES games we still need DKC2, DKC3, Earthbound, and...can you please release Kirby's Star Stacker SNES overseas Nintendo? You don't even have to translate it.
