After ongoing requests from fans, Masahiro Sakurai and his team have finally added Geno from Super Mario RPG to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate...as a costume. Yep, he's made it into the latest entry as an outfit, not an actual fighter.
As you might recall, this technically isn't Geno's first time appearing in the Super Smash Bros. series as a Mii Fighter costume. His outfit was also previously available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.
Social media, as you might have already guessed, has had mixed reactions to Geno's return as a costume, so we've rounded up some of the highlights. Take a look below:

Honestly don't know why people are all about Geno. Personally I thought Mallow was a wayyyyyyyyyyyy better character.
We already know of Geno's near-inclusion in Brawl and Sakurai's mentioned him specifically multiple times. IF, if, a Fighter's Pass 3 is confirmed, I'd bet money that he's in it.
@Specters Looks, style, personality, attack. Depth, intelligence, and such take a backseat in the Circus of the Lowest Common Denominator. Though Geno Boost and the Blast/Flash are no slouches.
Same general reason Tails gets picked on and ignored, despite being the barometer for whether or not a Sonic game fits the franchise's own theming and story tone.
I feel for the Geno fans, and I'm a bit disappointed they pulled the 'mii costume' card for him again.
Meh, never heard of him outside of the Smash memes. I'm just glad to have another character and more FF music.
RIMC: Rest in Mii Costumes
@Specters Not sure if your sarcastic or not, but Mallow might be my least favorite party member in any RPG I've played.
My biggest issue with Geno as a Mii is how out of proportion his limbs and body are.
Also, best use of the Infinity War meme I've seen.
Geno was my number 1 requested charecter for almost a decade at this point...but even I'll admit, sephiroth is a muuuch better choice, I'm very happy with what we have
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOO
Paper Mario>Super Mario RPG.
#facts
He's been my most wanted character since Super Smash Bros. 64. I didn't expect it to ever happen, but it would've been nice. I'm just glad we at least got the mii costume back again.
Let's just be real here....
Sephiroth Reveal: Internet hype x1000 OMFGGWTFBBQ!!!!!
Geno Reveal: Who the hell is this!?!? I HATE you Sakurai
Are star road is gone R.I.P geno Rest in peace.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Mallow has a far better story, actually has a personality and depth. Might not be the most useful party member once Peach joins but his story is really the heart of the story besides the standard JRPG save the world.
Geno has no character and is extremely wooden (sorry had to), he has no real development, his style is like a keebler elf with a gun, but I will give you if you can get the timing down he's the best party member.
I wouldn't want either of them in Smash though. Think we have the two most important Square characters now and representation of one of the best RPGs, Dragon Quest XI.
Yeah, I feel sorry for the Geno fanbase. But at the same time, Sephiroth is freaking awesome and if I could choose a Square character between the two it would be no contest.
@Specters Don't get me wrong, I found Geno to be boring as well. I agree Mallow had more personality than Geno, who was mostly a stick in the mud, but he just didn't have a personality that I liked. At no point in the story did I ever find him particularly likable. Both Mallow and Geno were kicked out of the party in favor of Bowser and Peach, not because those two had better stats or anything, but because I found those characters far more likable.
@Specters To me, he has the coolest design out of any Mario character. He also felt like FF character rather than a Mario character and at the time it was awesome. Maybe you are too young to know (idk your age) but he also represents an entire era of gaming, the SNES golden days, which means a lot for a ton of fans out there, myself included. Its fine if you aren't interested in him but at least have some respect for the fan demand
All this Geno talk is making me want to play Super Mario RPG. I should go back to that game.
I've never understood the Geno in Smash fandom. Geno appeared in one game, in 1996, and was never seen or heard from again. There are dozens of characters who are far more deserving of a Smash slot ahead of him.
I like to view Mii Costumes not as disconfirmation, but as an honorable mention. It's a way to sort-of play as characters that couldn't get in as fighters. I understand the disappointment knowing that your favorite character almost certainly wasn't picked for FP2 in light of this, but without the Mii Costume, all he'd have is a Spirit Battle.
And as a diehard Bandana Dee fan, I'd call you lucky to even have that.
why the obsession with that character?
There are other much more interesting than...that.
Come on, I don't get my Chibi-Robo either.
And Rex fans destroy Elma.
And why does no one recognize Sin & Punishment?
There's always a next Smash game / Fighters Pass... I hope.
@Decapre PM1 and SMRPG, I'd agree with.
What credentials does Geno even have?
I always forget about this character, crazy that they got thier own mii costume now
I do know how the Geno players feel. I felt the same way when I saw Travis Touchdown as a Mii costume.
The community response hurts. I love Geno and am excited to see the Mii Costume return. I get that it's nothing on the scale of other costumes, but at least it's something. To redeem the community, I vow to play strictly Geno moving forward and won't stop till I'm the very best.
Already getting way recognition more than any side character from a 20 year old RPG few people played would.
My reaction? F*** nintendo and square enix. What disrespect to not even MENTION Geno's inclusion (last time we got a "I wanted to give Geno fans at least something", now samurai didnt even say "here is Geno, shut the f*** up"). Felt forced, felt absurd and limited (cuphead and sans getting special treatment?!). I hate them for doing it this way.
@JJtheTexan agreed.
I am surprised that a lot of people are surprised about this, Geno is never going to be a fighter for extremely obvious reasons. (period)
People should just accept he’ll never be a fighter. Also as a representation of the Mario rpg’s Paper Mario is 1000x a more logical and interesting choice.
What has Geno done for us lately? Lol.
Many of you know I'm a veteran of this site. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. I'm a middle-aged man now, and Geno came out when I was 11, my daughter's age now. I remember the display at the store by my house. I remember booting up a copy I borrowed from a friend who would later destroy my life. The super nintendo controller was light in my hands. Lighter than it's own cord. It was the first time Mario's world felt like a place. The composer of Geno's theme "beware the forest mushrooms" went on to write music for Kingdom Hearts and Xenoblade Chronicles. I moved on to other games, too. The Geno DLC came out after I had to sell the console he was on to make rent. I missed him that time around. I saw him in Superstar Saga, though. I'll only allow myself so much disapointment. This is what I'll say. Better than an assist trophy, and hopefully he's back again. Maybe in Mariokart.
Geno would have a waste for better character, same as Waluigi.
Nothing against Geno but the obsession the internet seems to have with him seems overblown. His only game came out at end of snes and we never got it til the wii in Europe. So I dont think majority of people would recognize him if revealed as fighter for the pass. (Now if they added him as a final character separate from fighter pack be a nice move)
It's like people forgot that Mii costumes off of existing fighters exist. Oh wait...
Hey man, as an someone begging for Isaac the last 15 years, welcome to club sadboi.
I hope they rotate in some new spirits. There's still a good number of Nintendo's own franchises that lack collectible JPEGs. StarTropics, Endless Ocean, Geist, Cruis'n, Pro Wrestling...
On topic, it mystifies me how "professional" Smash roster speculators can talk about how much they want Geno, Sora or Crono and say how very DEFINITE their odds of getting in are, and then they turn around and are aghast at how Sephiroth could have EVER made it into Ultimate. Between both Fighters Passes, it's pretty obvious that the doors are wiiiide open for people to come in, and topics such as relevance or deserving of an invitation are totally out the window. Can't wait to see who the final(?) three are.
Couldn't they at least give him his actual head like they did with Sans, Bomberman and such?
An important piece of context missing here: Some (not all) Geno fans got SUPER cocky about Geno getting in Smash and thought he was guaranteed due to many leaks (both fake and vague) and fan theories.
Sora: I and many others feel like that’s impossible due to Disney partly owning Kingdom Hearts as a series. (Now come to think about it; Kingdom Hearts inclusion would go against what Super Smash Bros. stands for. )
Geno: Initally; copyright issues. Second; lack of interest. Third; Lack of interest while not being able to make a inventive and balanced moveset.
Karnov: YEAH THAT MAKES SENSE.
@drewber2635 Every character 'means a lot to the fans out there - even the most unplayable messes still have children who grew up playing them, who have fond memories of the experience. Regardless of quality, SMRPG is not really any different from any of those. It wasn't 'indicative of the SNES era' any more than the Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, or any number of fantastic RPGs that graced that era, sold no better, and has had just as little follow up to keep it in the public consciousness.
As a fan of the game, it is specifically because of people like you who tried to inflate SMRPG and Geno into gaming zeitgeists they never were that there is so much animosity against Geno and so many people celebrating his deconfirmation. The character was a side character in a niche game which didn't even get a global release. Exactly what are non fans supposed to be respecting?
Sakurai put the "No" in GeNo.
to want Geno you'd have to be well into your 30s. is that the target audience for Smash?
I wonder if this means Mario RPG is coming to the Switch SNES app. I hope so alongside Mario Paint!
No disrespect toward Sakurai and his development team (because I absolutely adore the man and acknowledge his hard work, and criticizing anything on the Internet results in immediate hatred and name-calling), but not giving Geno a full-body Mii outfit like Sans or Cuphead or Vault Boy is honestly pretty lame to me.
The Mii face doesn't look anything like him, and I don't see why they couldn't model a 3D head to cover it. He was definitely more requested than Bomberman, who even got the special treatment. I'm not even someone who particularly cares about Geno, but a Mii costume that actually does the character justice would have been a nice little bone to throw to the fans. (Same for including the Forest Maze song, since adding music is also something they've done in the past for Mii costumes.) It's just really baffling to me. I don't know of anyone who likes these Mii costumes that break the illusion by leaving the head exposed. Maybe I'm wrong.
@Decapre If you're talking the first three Paper Mario games, then I agree wholeheartedly.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I really hope so too, as I've never finished it. If that were the case, though, I don't know why Nintendo isn't adding it this week with DKC3 to take advantage of some cross-promotional marketing. It's one of the last major Nintendo games missing from the service, but I could definitely see copyright issues with Square causing problems, if they aren't willing to negotiate.
@Not_Soos Just uses eyebrows for his eye-seams and a moustache for his mouth.
Seriously, the guy was in just 1 game over 20 years ago, and he wasn't the main protagonist or main antagonist, nor is he a Nintendo status symbol like ROB, nor does he bring any unique gameplay ideas to the table like the Ice Climbers. He's frankly lucky his cult following is strong enough to get him included as a Mii costume.
@Bliquid @Charinzardon To be fair, many of us (myself included) have played Geno's game within the last decade when it came out on the Wii's Virtual Console. The rest of your points are accurate, though.
Is there a reason why the mii fighter costumes have to be purchased separately? Finding that a bit frustrating as its not a full character as such
We already know Sakurai doesn't have full control on the choice of DLC characters. Don't you think maybe he didn't make much fuss on the Mii costume presentation because he, too, is disappointed?
A lot of Mii Costumes from Smash 4 were recycled, I kind of expected him to return like that
I’m surprised they included his Mii costume from Smash 4 but I’m a tad disappointed we haven’t gotten Geno as a fighter...yet.
I’ll still buy the Mii costumes though because they look nice.
Good Riddance
Everyone seems to forget that Geno was in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Not as a playable character though
Sakurai didnt have a choice but the moment ive been dreading is finally here. I really find it rough that of all the games they couldnt of added a full inclusion of him
This will hopefully finally quiet down a certain part of the fanbase ....
It sucks the song from the trailer isn't in the game.
Well he got into smash of a sort, so hopefully people won't whine too much.
@Specters Same. I'm relieved he won't take up one of the DLC slots....I mean fine for a base game character if they went that route, but not a DLC one. Never found his design good or interesting.
Never really cared too much about this one but yeah... Seph is really badass, and im hoping here for well, Doom Slayer and Reimu
@Specters same
I don't even know what he is or why people want him so much. He looks like a Digimon.
I find it very interesting how it seems a majority of the fan base insisted that people were being childish and immature by voicing their displeasure about the inclusion of Steve, and now it seems more than half of the fan base is perfectly content to dunk on Geno fans now that he's essentially deconfirmed.
@EvrgrnCmln How am I trying to inflate it? Its my opinion lol Sure SMRPG wasn't the definitive RPG for SNES and might not have sold that well but his character has endured despite everything you mentioned. Do the characters from those other RPGs ever get brought up in Smash speculation? No. They don't. Its the fact that Geno has been heavily requested since the Brawl days that makes him special. If his game and appearance were so insignificant like you claim they were than why are we here in 2020 on a post about people upset that Geno didn't make it in Smash? Why was Geno given a Mii costume? Lmao. You do you bud.
@w00dm4n smh you’re right, forgot that SMRPG was only playable within the year of release. After that year passed nobody unfamiliar to the game ever played it. There were never any new fans of it, yep.
@K0T0G enough to go on and on about Geno? he was a Mii costume in the last Smash game. shocker they put it in the new one and that it took this long.
SMRPG wasn't even a worldwide release at the time and it was only on the Wii VC.
it's just getting sad.im just happy the Smash games got Fire Emblem out of Japan.
My family doesn't even play games, yet pretty much everyone except my Dad played SMRPG back in the day. I think things like that should be taken into account when deciding relevancy. The fact that my Mom would recognize Geno before Sephiroth is pretty out there.
@drewber2635 If the character had 'endured' in any meaningful way it would be evidenced in representation in media beyond Smash Bros and Smash Bros speculation. All Smash speculation demonstrates is the snowball nature of the internet hype machine. Geno was 'heavily requested' by people who spent time on Smash speculation threads because Sakurai was a fan of the character and had mentioned considering him for Brawl. This made his fans believe he had a chance, which made them vocal. Repeatedly getting brought up fueled the idea that the character was popular and led to the current day situation where his fans are still trying to convince people that because they spent so much time talking about him he's 'deserving' and the rest of the internet is reveling in their disappointment.
Ask yourself why nobody rejoiced at the disappointment of Isaac fans but there's so much hostility towards Geno fans.
@drewber2635 When I think of the SNES, Geno is no where near the top of that pile. To be honest Geno isn't the first thing I think of when I think of The Legend of the Seven Stars. I don't know where you get the Geno has such a big influence during that era. The only time I ever see him mentioned is when people mention how good he is in combat when talking LotSS, or he should be in Smash.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I hope so too. Judging by Wii U's SNES virtual console, there's literally not many other games Nintendo can pull from the pool for the next SNES NSO additions.
I'm "♥♪!?", but it's hard to pronounce...
I don't really understand why this specifically was treated as the death of Geno in Smash hopes. Geno was already deconfirmed for this pass when they announced Sephiroth a week earlier; they weren't going to put two late-90s Squaresoft RPG characters in the same pass — and if they decide later they want to do a third fighters pass and put him in that one, the fact that he's already a Mii costume won't stop them. Once they announced Sephiroth and I knew Geno wasn't getting in, I was hoping for his Mii costume to come back in this direct because otherwise he wouldn't be in the game at all.
I just want Dante from DMC or Doom guy.
