Sega tried walking down the "remake" route. Does anyone remember Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis for the GBA? Blech. Why would you want/need to remake a platformer anyway? Update it with a twist (New Super Mario Brothers being a good example), but don't just rehash it.
"Remakes" of platformers are beyond pointless, whereas RPG always have room for improvement, and remakes can sometimes be deemed as necessary (bad translations, crappy graphics, et cetera).
Anyway, I have this for the GG... pretty mediocre, but worth a look for hardcore Sonic fans.. on Sonic Mega Collection Plus, that is.
So this month I downloaded two "New Release" games. (MUSHA and Castlevania III.) Not bad, given I hadn't downloaded a single "New Release" game in what seemed to be ages.
Still, I'd like to see a return to the 2-3 new games a week strategy of old.
To everyone: Shining Force II was not on a Sega compilation. Back when Sega Smash Pack Volume 3 was rumored for PCs ('90s or 2000) it was rumored to be one of the games, but that title never came to fruition; hence why I bought the cart itself back then. (Still don't own the original Shining Force cart though thanks to Sega Smash Pack Volume 2.)
It'll be released in the Sega Ultimate Collection coming up though. Good times.
@ Stuffgamer1 - Sony can't really compete with Nintendo and the Virtual Console. Yeah it's great they're (finally) pushing out PS1 games, but Nintendo has a huge library of games to choose from, while Sony has a pretty limited scope of (good) PS1 games to re-release. (Granted, I have a PS3 and will probably download Castlevania Chronicles.)
I honestly believe Nintendo doesn't care much about fringe gamers like us who download games like Ys Book I & II - games they released years ago are still in the top 10 downloads, so why should they? It's sad, but right now we're being outspent and outspoken by a bunch of casual gamers who download Super Mario 64 and then never sign on to the VC again. Just a thought anyway.
Whoa, a rare-miss for a VCReview. Not only is the review painfully brief, but also you're calling Sonic 2 "easier"? If memory serves, it was the opposite way around - I'd say Sonic 2 offers more of a challenge. (And not in a good way.)
Perhaps I could be wrong; I should refresh my memory and eat the 500 points. I am a Sonic fan after all... (points to avatar)
I remember playing Sonic 2 as a kid for Game Gear, and it being really difficult. And by difficult, I mean cheap; like "How can you not get hit in this boss battle," cheap. So I'm not exactly thrilled by this week either.
However, it is a Master System game. Can we see some legitimate Master System releases in the future, please? Golden Axe Warrior? Alien Syndrome? Rastan? ...
A friend of mine gave me the original cart yesterday, and I spent some of yesterday and today playing. Wow, the GBA remake really doesn't do the original justice.
I became an instant fan of the game - run 'n gun at its finest. The levels are unique, and the boss battles are epic. Plus the game has a surprising amount of replay value. Definitely a game I can recommend to everyone. 5/5.
Meh. It's available on Capcom Classics v1/PSP, not to mention I have the Genesis cart. The 3/5 stars and prefaced review is pretty fair. I'm a huge Genesis fan, but this game is pretty average.
I'm really conflicted - while it's a good game, it's yet another one-game addition week.
It's really sad that as weeks go by, my interest in the Virtual Console wanes. Maybe its the lack of a storage solution, or maybe its a lack of games that aren't games I played 15 years ago that I want to play again to have a 5 minute nostalgia kick. The best games on the VC, in my opinion, are the ones I never played, or couldn't play, like Sin & Punishment and Ys 1 and 2.
I'm not trying to be a downer, I'm just saying. I'm probably the only one that feels this way regardless.
Shining Force II! Awesome, instant download. Work is going to be torture today...
As for Mario Golf, I prefer the GC version... I'm glad the VCR team pointed at the the 64 version is just kinda "golf," nothing unique. A good game nevertheless.
Awesome, instant purchase. The sequel is a lot better than the original, so if you felt that the original fell just a bit short, you might want to give this one a chance. I have a feeling you'll be happy you did.
Already have the GBA and DS version of Dodge Ball, and have Vectorman on the Genesis collection. However, Megaman 9 is tempting. Guess I'll be deleting a game off my Wii for room today...
Thanks for the hasty response Dazza - oh well... guess I'll just have to try and get used to it. (I'd never played the original SMB3, just the All Stars and GBA version.)
Does anyone else have display issues? The right side of the screen gets the colors messed up when Mario walks forward. I don't know whether this is my television or what...
I'm a big fan of Golden Axe, so I finally broke down and decided to give this one a try. This game is the quintessential "average" title, and it got tedious after a while. I'm still glad I tried it for myself though.
I guess I enjoy Golden Axe so much because of the fantasy themes... (Must be why Dungeon Siege was a massive success and now Space Siege is getting lambasted by critics.)
Mr. Cheez - It depends what camera angel you prefer I guess. They're both excellent games. I just picked this game back up today, and I'm really enjoying it. Personally I prefer Landstalker over Beyond Oasis, but they're both worth playing at one point or another.
Just downloaded this. I, like a lot of other people here, got to enjoy this title through the GG version. I have to agree with the four-star rating; although it's just as fun as I remember, it's slow, suffers a lot of slowdown (especially during The Bridge stages), and just doesn't have the same charm as the Genesis Sonic titles.
That said, if you're a Sonic fan, definitely give this a download. It's a lot of fun regardless of its shortcomings. I'm happy to see that it's been selling so well.
I literally just packed my Wii yesterday thinking, "There's no way a good game will be released tomorrow. Might as well pack it now and get it over with."
Of course, I pack my Wii up (I'm moving Wednesday) and they release f&*%ing Gley Lancer, a game I've been wanting for months. (SIGH)
How the hell did a comment wall on a website dedicated to the Virtual Console service turn into a fanboy debate? Jeez, I go to this site to avoid that nonsense.

Re: USA VC Update: Commodore 64 Launches With Three Games
'Bout time. I haven't turned my Wii on in ages... so downloading Last Ninja will be a nice change of pace.
Re: Rumour: EarthBound Not Coming to Virtual Console
Interesting. I could of sworn there was some type of time-window for such lawsuits.
Not to mention the fact that if you just change some notes here and there, it can become legal. Regardless, this sounds pretty suspect to me.

Re: USA VC Update: Phantasy Star IV
Merry &*%$'in Christmas everyone.
Re: USA VC Update: Enduro Racer
@ 7th lutz
... yeah, that was kind of the point. Sarcasm. Try playing a 3D game without 3D glasses. It'd almost be as bad as Enduro Racer.
Re: USA VC Update: Enduro Racer
I don't mind Sega and TG-16 games. I don't even mind Commodore 64 games - OH WAIT. Look at my little flag. I don't have those.
Enduro Racer?! What's next? Maze Hunter 3-D?
Re: USA VC Update: Enduro Racer
ZOMG SWEET ENDURO RACER FOR THE SMS ... wait, wtf. This blows.
... no, but really I'm gonna try this game. Never. Never going to try this game... is what I meant to say.

Another one game release week. EVERYBODY PANIC

Re: Alien Crush Returns
I love watching an advertisement for a pinball game. It's like advertising sponges. What the hell can you say? It's a sponge.
No, but seriously - why the remake of Alien Crush and not Devil Crush? Either way, I might pick this up if the VC continues to be slow.
Re: USA VC Update: Space Harrier
AW. I just got back from work, saw "M.U.S.H.A. and more," and celebrated for about five seconds. Then I saw this. Ouch.
Re: Japanese Virtual Console list - November 2008
Ogre Battle, Mercs and Cadash... wow, great list.
Re: Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
(waits patiently)
Re: USA VC Release - Earthworm Jim
Meh ... I have the GBA version.
Re: EU VC Releases: Mayhem in Monsterland and More
It seems like every week my disdain for lacking C64 games grows more and more... ugh. We're really missing out.
Re: USA VC Releases: Secret of Mana and Street Fighter II Genesis
Wow, Secret of Mana? That's a shock. Like literally, I'm pretty speechless.
Re: Nintendo World Cup
Awesome. I hate soccer as a sport, but I love this game.

Re: EU VC Releases: Earthworm Jim and Shining Force II
PLEASE let the US get Shining Force II on Monday. I'm actually going to hold off on buying Super Turrican 2 in hopes of SF2 coming out here.

Re: The Legend of the Mystical Ninja
I was tempted to buy this, but all the negative comments veered me off. Thanks to all the honest posters.
Re: Mega Man 9
I'm sad to say it, but I'm considering downloading this on my 360, since my Wii has such a limited amount of space.

Re: PEGI and ESRB Update: Last Ninja 3, Enduro Racer and More
The US needs to get Commodore 64 soon, people need to play the Last Ninja games... is there an update on the reasoning behind us not getting it?
Re: USA VC Release: Mega Man 2
The best of the best. Already own the cart, but people who haven't played this should. Immediately.
Re: USA VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Clu Clu Land
It's a shame, but I'll be too busy with Y's. Great week for the hordes who have been screaming for this game for months now though.
Re: Drake's Ratings Roundup - August 2008
Shining Force 2... that's good news.

Re: Final Soldier
It'd be nice to get this on Monday... I'd finally feel like the US was getting a somewhat steady flow of good games for a change.
Re: EU VC Releases: Super Mario RPG and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Very nice guys, very nice. (Embraces for impact of hoards of jealous/upset fellow US posters.)

Re: ESRB Update: Sonic the Hedgehog on Master System

Re: Sonic on the Master System coming to Virtual Console?
I loved this game on the Game Gear... if this appeared on the VC, it'd be an instant download for me.
Re: Super Dodge Ball
I'm surprised this wasn't released in correlation with the Super Dodge Ball game on the DS. That would of been marketing gold.
