The Sega Genesis Collection had the same effect on the early VC Genesis library.
BUT, the emulation on the SNK Arcade Classics isn't up to par with the VC versions of the games. (Judging by Magician Lord.) However, the price of admission is worth Last Resort alone.
Downloaded this today out of pure curiosity - and I love it! This isn't for casual schmup fans though; it's merciless. That's why I love it so much. If you're into insanely hard schmups, look no further. This is for you.
Thanks for the excellent review, Damien. Can't believe I passed this over the week it was released!
No good VC releases because of a weak dollar? Oh no, of course not, Nintendo is putting a hold on Earthbound because they want to promote WiiWare, right?
Guys, the easiest solution is usually the right one: Nintendo has very little planned as far as release dates are concerned. Look at the differences between the US and Europe. There are games that have been out in Europe for months (ESWAT, anyone?) that I'm STILL waiting for.
I don't think any planning goes into what day a game is released, I just think they put a limit on how many games can be released on a specific Monday, and they wouldn't put two blockbusters together. That's a pretty simple equation.
Plus, if Nintendo dumped every game you want on the VC in a month, you wouldn't have the money to buy them all right away. Or, you'd be too busy playing X to play Y, X and Y both being games you want to play. I'm still playing LandStalker, which has been my "rainy day" purchase... I bought it after the US hasn't seen a release that interests me in a few weeks. I suggest all of you whiners and conspiracy theorists go back to one of those games you were on the fence with and download it. I did that with LandStalker, and I'm really happy with it.
How would Tiny Toons make it on the VC? Does anyone actually think Spielburg would allow that? Or anyone would shell the money out for the rights? ....
I think complaining about the lack of Y's Book I&II is more viable than complaining about the lack of FF or Mario RPG; Y's has been announced, and the Japanese have it already. Just saying.
Am I the only one who thinks that the VC is better utilized when it brings us obscure titles that we couldn't possibly either A) afford in it's original form or be B) be available in our region?
Sin & Punishment, possibly my favorite Wii VC game, is the perfect example. A lot of the best games on the Wii VC right now are games that you can get either on compilations or on a GBA cart. If I had to choose between owning a physical copy of a game, or downloading it to me Wii (which has limited space mind you), I'd always choose the former.
So the games I think we all appreciate fall into those two previously mentioned categories. Problem is, how many games that fall into those two categories can you list off the top of your head? (Something that fulfills both category A and B is Gleylancer for the Genesis, coming soon.)
So, much like a retro compilation, Nintendo has to release "filler games." Games we don't want. I think the amount of those types of games are readily available. Remember back when we got three games a week? How many weeks did all three games excite you; or even get you to download all three?
So what are we upset about exactly? Are we upset that we're not getting three games a week anymore, or are we just (still) upset that we're not getting those select few games we really want, like Super Mario RPG, Super Smash Bros., ect.? I'd have to say that it is the latter. Just the lack of game releases highlights that complaint.
Sorry about the long post, just wanted to get my point across in a clear, concise manner.
This interview leaves me with mixed feelings. I don't want to download a long advert for a movie; yet the game art looks amazing.
I don't know how I feel about his opinion regarding sequels. Sometimes a sequel is warranted! Either way I look forward to hearing more about this and his other projects in the future. Interesting interview!
This is great news, but I'm worried that all the games they add will just be the ones that are currently on the C64 joystick tv plug 'n play. That would be lame. (I have both a C64 with a large collection of games and a C64 joystick plug 'n play, but it's the principle.)
What would be awesome is if we saw the Ultima series. But that's not gonna happen.
Damo made a pretty good point up there if you guys didn't see it. XBLA gamers get one retro game a month, if they're lucky. Although the Tron Arcade Game was released recently (in the US), that was t he first XBLA game I bought in months.
I think the last VC game I bought was Alien Storm, but still, there are more choices on the VC nonetheless. If you're only going to get one game this week, it doesn't get much better than SSFII.
This is totally rad news. Maybe we'll get the GG Shining Force and Shinobi games? The Master System had some pretty cool games too, like Rambo and Lord of the Sword.
First, let's hope that's an early beta. It's the exact same game! Nothing is "new" about it besides the improved graphics. Nintendo knows "Duck Hunt" has reached a "SMB" level of not only do retro gamers want to play it again, but everyone from frat boys to cutsie cheerleaders (i.e. not the usual gamer) want to play it again. (New SMB, New Duck Hunt. It makes sense.)
Secondly, it would make more sense to make this a budget disc release AND a Wii Ware download. That way, the people online with their Wii can download it, and the (numerous amount of) people who couldn't connect their own computer to the Internet, not to mention a Wii, can enjoy this one too.
PS - If you doubt that people with a Wii can't get it online, work at/hang out a video game store for a few days. Then you'll realize that not only do people give up on getting their Wii online, but some people don't even know the Wii CAN go online.
I rarely complain about the US not getting games, cause Europe gets the shaft on games we get all the time (have you guys gotten Ninja Gaiden II yet?). But I really am interested in this game, and I can't wait to play it.
Hopefully, the US will get to play this hidden gem sooner rather than later.
I'm actually happy about this. Goldeneye is all about multiplayer, and the Wii doesn't really excell in that department.
Besides, who didn't see this coming? I never thought Goldeneye would make it on the VC, so the fact it's being released at all is good news to me. If you have something against Microsoft, that's your loss I suppose.
True story: I finally broke down and bought a copy of StarTropics. It was only 6 bucks, and it was in mint condition, but jeez. That is the definition of irony.
Great games today! I'd be surprised if any one finds any reason to complain this week.
I remember this came out for the holidays, and whoever was working at the counter at the Babbages (now GameStop) said something to me regarding Sonic Spinball that was quite insightful: "The game was rushed for a Christmas release."
This game had A LOT of potential, but unfortunately this game is the posterchild of 16-bit games that were rushed, i.e., bad frame rate, wonky controls, and less than acceptable graphics. Being a Sonic fan, I get a lot of hate for not liking this game, but trust me, this is a definate pass, especially at the 800 points pricetag.
This game really has a bad reputation, but it's definately worth playing. Although I wish Konami took some time to fix some of the bad translations, I'm glad VC gamers will get a chance to judge for themselves how cool this game is rather than assume it's bad because of an entry from the AVGN.
The game is extremely difficult and frustrating, yes. Sometimes you feel like you're playing Zork or some other impossible text adventure because you just run out of ideas and have no idea what to do. Take a deep breath, be patient, and give this game a fair chance. (I'd give it a 3.5/5 if I had that option.)
I'd say that comparing this game to Advance Wars is pretty fair, seeing as how Damo was just trying to draw attention to the fact that this game has aged a bit.
Regardless, this game is totally rad. It's def. worth some attention if you're into the who SRPGs genre. I'd say this made a better port on the SNES than Sim City, too.
Only for the true RPGers I guess... I enjoy the 3D 1st person dungeon crawls. This one isn't the best, but I'm having fun with it anyway. I'll probably wind up reviewing it to do it justice.

Re: M.U.S.H.A.
If there was ever a game that warranted its price on the VC, it's definitely MUSHA. Look at the eBay prices when you get a chance.
