Yeah, that would be seriously cool. If someone wanted to watch TV while you were playing, it would be a simple matter for you to change the channel for them in a pause menu. Giving control of the TV to the controller would bring total unity to anyone's entertainment center with the WiiU console at the core of it. Nintendo should seriously consider this if they haven't already.
I think exploring the middle ground would be best for the situation. The game will obviously have basically the same graphics and the same engine along with some probable tweaks. The controls, on the other hand should be completely different and there will probably be some extra visual content that needs to be produced for the controller's screen. So graphics ported, gameplay and extras original.
Of course, there is the possibility that this game will operate differently than the other two console versions since WiiU should be capable of some pretty mad processing power which will allow for more AI to be operating at once among other things. I think 'superior version' will be a better term for it when we finally hear all the juicy details at E3.
I'm gonna take the conspiracy route and say they're waiting until E3 to give us details on it. It would be a missed opportunity for Capcom NOT to release it on WiiU. I also heard that some early tests showed that it was extraordinarily easy to port things from PS360 to WiiU. I guess if it doesn't come to WiiU then it'll find a home on my PS3.
@Nintendoftw I'll buy it day 1 because I want to support Nintendo and its franchises. I want to send a message to Nintendo saying, "Hey! I have your console, now put some decent games on it!" The second reason is so I can show it to all my friends and hopefully get them to purchase one as well, thereby increasing my potential for gaming with them in the same room or online.
The real fact of the matter, though, is that WiiU WILL be a better console and have more capabilities than current gen. I found a youtube post outlining exactly how it will be better. This guy is pretty dry when it comes to entertaining, but it's actually quite informative. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcnsG11MRE8 The only thing that really concerns me about the video card is that it will be producing visuals for two screens. Of course, one of those screens probably won't be displaying anything beyond simple interfaces and maps, but it still eats power from the GPU. Another major question I have is about storage. How much flash memory is this thing going to have? My guess is 16-32GB, but it could be less. I hope it's more.
I hope it's wrong as far as the cheaper components go. I hope it at least runs anything Xbox 360 and PS3 can, but it better be able to do it in native 1080p @ 60fps. I really find it hard to believe that Nintendo is going this route though, since they aren't giving MS and Sony fans any reason to buy one. Those fans are going to be looking for better graphics and a controller that shares the same or better functionality as the ones they are used to. The controller, as far as we know, doesn't even have analog triggers let alone buttons on the circle pads. I'm going to have a hard time believing that this is a good move for Nintendo unless I see some crazy sales figures later on.
I will, of course, buy one, because I've been a fan of Nintendo since my brain started retaining memories. I just hope Nintendo isn't digging itself a hole with this one. I swear, the stupid investors don't know anything; they'll be the death of Nintendo.
@sinalefa [staring at screen, mouth gaping] Huh!? I played the crap out of that game. Maybe I'll have to give it another look now. Thanks for the tip.
Wow, I can't believe I missed that. I eventually started ignoring those stupid Lumas that were scattered everywhere; should've paid more attention to them. Still, the flying hurt my brain. It was probably the worst flying experience I've had in a Mario game, at least on the planet where it is unlocked and the view sucks and the controls don't change with the view so brain assault occurs.
They're all really good games. One thing to think about when comparing the newer ones to the old ones is that we didn't get the actual SMB2 in America (not sure about Europe) until it was released for Wiiware. SMB2 uses the same game mechanics as the first one with some very minor tweaks. So saying the old ones are actually more varied and original doesn't really work since SMB and SMB2 have even more in common with each other than SMG and SMG2. I'm just saying that the old sequels take the same incremental leap as the new ones do.
The only real problem I have with the new Mario games is that none of them have utilized an overworld map like SMW did. That map was so cool! I want to see another one in the near future with the same level of secrets and connectivity that that one had. Sure they have so called 'special worlds' in SMG2 and 3D Land, but I want to have a big playground to explore aside from all the levels. And bring back flying for F*** sake! We haven't been able to fly in a Mario game since the freaking N64!!! NOT EVEN IN THE 2D ONES!!!!!!! I'm sorry, but cloud powerups and lame, nonfunctional Tanooki suits just don't cut it. I want actual flight that I can control that will lead me to cool little secrets in the sky.
Aside from all that, I like myself some Mario. It really is the best platforming experience out there.
This sounds like a great idea to me. The fact that there will probably be just one uber-premium controller paired with my console means that I want it to be the coolest thing to use with the system. This kind of tech could really set it apart. Another thing is the whole concern with the power of the console itself. If Nintendo is going to make a console on par with what we're all used to right now, then something like this would definitely curb my disappointment. Now all we need is a Nintendo seat pad and/or shoes with built in force feedback to tell us what kind of terrain we are running or driving on. Just kidding, that would be overkill.
This actually coincides with my thought that Nintendo is trying to underhype the power of their system until E3. They know da** well that graphical prowess matters. Iwata said it himself that it was one of the mistakes they made with the Wii. They're trying to throw us off balance now so that when E3 finally hits, we get completely blown away. That's what I think anyway.
The whole 'experience of play' statement doesn't neglect the idea of a high powered console that delivers better looking visuals than what we are currently used to. My eyes are a big part of my play experience and if they don't see something better than what they are used to on a new system then my opinion of that console's ability to satisfy my need for a good experience will be greatly diminished. If Nintendo wants to capture the attention of any 'hardcore' gamers from other consoles then they're going to have to bring it when it comes to power.
@JayceJa #24 Nice comment. I tend to forget that people don't realize the true limitations of weak hardware. Improving the hardware makes it possible to improve the gameplay experience as well as the look of the game. Saying that the Wii is good enough is kind of short sighted if you ask me. I want larger worlds, better AI, and more action in my games.
@smashbrawler331 #53 I agree that it would be impossible to make anything that looked better than real life. I'll leave you with a few reasons how things could improve in the future though: quantum computing and holographic storage. That is all.
@ElDelEl #29 Dude, I won't let my kids lay a finger on my touch screen controller (when I get one) for at least a year after I get it. In my opinion, touch screens are not for kids since they tend to destroy them quickly. You can bet that controller will be under lock and key to prevent any scratches. Just saying, kids are the devil.
There's always been a need for more power with me simply because that's what I'm used to when a new console comes out. The games should look better. I definitely want to see an improvement over Xbox 360 and PS3. It doesn't have to be that much, but I would prefer it be noticeable, even if that just means a few more polys running at 1080p instead of upscaled lower res crap.
I find this article to be quite revealing. Those anonymous sources basically just got snuffed out since we now have another recent report from a respected developer saying that it is, in fact, better. It doesn't seem like WiiU will be too overpowered, but I don't think that will be such a big deal in the future. Creating an affordable system that still improves on the current gen is a win if you ask me. I just hope the video card has enough beef to really make these games shine since it will essentially be split between two screens. I suppose much of the rendering will be seen on the main screen with a more resource friendly menu system/map interface on the controller screen for the more graphically impressive games.
I just wish that Ubisoft would stop being all about quantity and start producing more quality. They have a few good games, but for the most part I just feel like I'm getting a pile of half eaten sandwiches from them. Put some of those dev teams together and make some truly remarkable games.
I agree completely with this. Having all of your commands on the touch screen and all of the action on the TV would probably be an even better setup than a PC. DS and 3DS have done dual screens, but the resolution is so low. I think WiiU is going to take all of the dual screen potential out of it's limited handheld shell and just floor everyone with how awesome it is.
I'm not generally nitpicky, but 'buckets of salt'? Doesn't the whole 'take this with a grain of salt' phrase mean that it is small and doesn't require much salt? Anyways I'll be taking the announcements at E3 with a bucket of salt.
Has anyone else seriously been paying attention to the progression of this kind of news? Last E3 we were blown away. Next, reports/rumors start coming in on how the WiiU is a good deal more powerful than Xbox 360 and PS3. Slowly we start to see rumors that it is as powerful and now less powerful. This could easily be Nintendo's own doing.
Nintendo wants to hit us all hard at E3 this year; totally blow us away. If everyone already knows what the console can do then how are they going to blow us away? I think Nintendo is planting these rumors to offset peoples' opinions about how powerful the system will be to keep people off balance. Of course, if I'm right, then WiiU is going to be one mad powerhouse of a console because that's the clincher, that is what they're going to be hitting us with is amazing visuals and they don't want us to be ready for it.
This game is absolutely crazy. The story is incredibly deep with surprising twists, the gameplay is fast and forces you to be on your toes all the time, and the visuals are just awesome! The controls do take some getting used to, but there really isn't a better alternative for such a fast paced game that requires so much precision. To me though, what it comes down to is the weapon system. I play this game solely to find the best weapon for the job. So far I have a pair of Tiger Claws valued in the 280's with 5 1/2 stars on melee and ranged. Those things absolutely annihilate everything in the multiplayer games. That's another thing I love is that the weapon system ties the multiplayer together with the single player. There is so much game here for the paltry asking price, but I would think it would be a hard thing to get into if you're a 'one weapon for the entire game' kind of person.
It's not an important fact. It's obscure and frankly, it doesn't seem like something we should lose any time or sleep over. It's a good game, that's all that matters to me.
Anyone who is hating on the Vita should stop. It's doing poorly now, but will pick up as soon as Sony releases the PS4. Right now Vita is in direct competition with PS3 (stupid if you ask me) so that is why it is struggling. It is also a decent amount more expensive than 3DS, especially after buying a memory card for it. As soon as people stop comparing it to PS3 in terms of graphics it will start doing well. I'll probably never get one, but this is how I see it.
I disagree that the original DS wasn't modern tech when it came out. In fact, I would say that the 3DS is in the same boat as the original DS was when IT came out. 3DS is borderline impressive at the moment, but it will soon become old tech. I'm sure the games are going to be amazing in the years to come but, in the end if its life, we're going to be looking back on it probably a lot like we look back on the DS right now.
I've been with Nintendo through thick and thin, but when they tried to sell me a 3DS for $250 I just couldn't do it. That was way too much and I think they knew it. Not even a Mario game would have convinced me to get one at that price. I'm just glad they tried this kind of thing with their handheld instead of the main console. Now I have more faith that Nintendo won't screw this up. I expect to see them flash $299.99 across their huge projector this E3 because anything higher will have the same effect as the 3DS did. I just hope they don't underpower the thing just to reach that price point and still make a profit. If there's one thing they should learn from the industry now it's that gaming companies won't be making any money on consoles any more. All of that will come from the games.
Top comment is best comment. I don't want any of that 'free to play' garbage on my Nintendo console. I don't feel right when I try ftp games because I'm stuck in the middle of: Okay, do I buy everything it has to offer or just a few things or do I just want to see what I can get for free? I prefer to buy a game that has everything included and DLC is about the only post sale transaction I'm willing to make since most of that is a large addition to the full game I'm already playing. I haven't even heard of this prick or his little game company and I really don't care about it or him. Full priced AAA games are ALWAYS better than free to play garbage.
Kid Icarus is easily the best game on the system, not to mention that it's basically a new IP from Nintendo making it an entirely fresh experience. Mario 3D Land is an easy second.
1)Kid Icarus: Uprising 2)Super Mario 3D Land 3)Resident Evil: Revelations 4)Mariokart 7 5)Mutant Mudds 6)Pushmo
This article seems a bit unclear, but all I got from it is that they aren't doing anything to update the graphics of Darksiders II. I don't think (really hope they aren't) Nintendo is going to skimp on the graphics this time. The first line of games probably will be on par with what Xbox 360 and PS3 have to offer right now, but I'm really expecting some hardware that leaves a lot of room to grow. If Nintendo skimps on graphics this time, I'm done.
Lol, what are they thinking? This is going to be the last good game for the Wii and, just like every other system's death period, it will be the one that gets overall forgotten until it gets rereleased as a download later on. Paper Mario was the same way on the N64; great game, but I didn't buy it because I needed to save money for a Gamecube. I'm a big fan of Wii, but it started showing its years about two years ago. WiiU is going to use the old Wiimotes so why not just develop it for that and then port down to 360/PS3 instead of porting up to them?
It's really hard to say whether WiiU will be able to crack the PS3/360 crowd. I think a lot of people partial to those systems will snuff Nintendo like they usually do and just say something like 'I'll wait for the PS4/Xbox Loop'. Just watch, the two new systems from Sony and MS are going to have touch screens on them and none of the fanboys who support them are going to care that Nintendo made that change for them.
What seems to matter most with how many poeple buy a console is how many people HAVE the console. Right now, pretty much all of my friends almost exclusively use Xbox 360 as their gaming machine, even if their PC's are more powerful, just because all of their friends are using it. It's really an uphill battle right now and the only way WiiU is going to get the support it needs is if every Nintendo fan can get up and show off this new console to everyone they know. I've personally managed to turn my Wii into an acceptable alternative to Xbox and PC just by bringing it with me to my college Game Club and over to friends places and showing off the better games it has to offer (especially Smash Bros.). This time, there isn't a reason (graphics) for people not to get a WiiU so get up and show that new system off when you get it.
I got the free game, and I also made a point to try it for a few minutes BEFORE I started Uprising. All these old games just don't appeal to me nearly as much as they did when I was a kid and they were all new. Uprising's weapon system alone is greater than any NES game to date. Oh, well, now I have another title to add to the pile of classics on my 3DS. Free = win
Resident Evil Revelations is a great example if this system being used well. All of the menus are on the bottom screen and weapon changes can be made using buttons or touch with both being useful at different times. I can't wait to see my friends' faces when I show them how awesome this can be (they're mostly xbots).
It's a bunch of nonsense. I don't care what their marketing data tells them. A good developer either creates or reinvigorates a market. Resident Evil is the type of game that can do this sort of thing. Resident Evil is also one of the things that puts Capcom on the radar. If they muck up their showcase franchise, then they'll be tainting their overall image. This kind of crap makes me sick and I won't buy a game that tries to mimic something else just to make a few extra bucks. Stupid executives are to blame for all video game failures because all they understand is money and how to get it. GARBAGE! ALL OF IT!!!!
More zombies [throws up]. I'm going to turn into a F***ing zombie before game developers stop spamming zombie games. How about evil bunnies a la Monty Python's Holy Grail? I wouldn't mind shooting down a herd of those.
All I really ask is that we get the option to have black WiiU right off the bat. Nintendo said they were going to target core fans this time around and some cool black plastic would be one good step in that direction. A little green wouldn't hurt either. Deep green, not radioactive Xbox green.
If they're making PS3/360 versions then I'm sure there will also be a WiiU version released alongside the Wii version. It would be stupid to let those high poly models and textures go to waste by only releasing it to Nintendo in regular Wii form.
I think that would be pretty cool as an offshoot for the series as long as they keep making medieval type Fire Emblem games too. Since having guns around always brings the issue of an overpowered weapon category, they could create a world where guns were outlawed and close to being forgotten. Getting a character with who uses guns would be either a huge part of the story or a relatively obscure side quest or battle condition. It would also be expensive to fund such a character since gun ammunition and upgrades would be rare. I think they could have made it work quite well, but there goes Nintendo being all scared of changing their games even though they aren't scared to change the way we play them.
@ #2 I wouldn't mind seeing another installment to that series since it's been, what, three years since we've seen a new entry? I finished Days of Ruin to 100% completion and then proceeded to completely destroy all of my friends in it so they don't really want to play it with me anymore. I need another game to coax them into more matches

That's not too bad of a deal as long as he has some dialogue with other characters here and there and actually fits in somehow.
Re: Rumour: Wii U Components Cost $180, Will Retail at $300
No. The $180 is how much it costs for a system and controller. At least, it is if you take this rumor as pure truth.

That's another thing I love is that the weapon system ties the multiplayer together with the single player. There is so much game here for the paltry asking price, but I would think it would be a hard thing to get into if you're a 'one weapon for the entire game' kind of person.
Re: April's Club Nintendo Rewards Are Now Available
I have Metal Torrent and it is kind of a shallow game. It's fun, but it feels a little weird.
Re: SEGA to Cancel Games, Focus on Existing IP
(less games)(higher quality) = extreme sales
Re: The Mystery of the Super Mario Bros. U.S. Release Date
It's not an important fact. It's obscure and frankly, it doesn't seem like something we should lose any time or sleep over. It's a good game, that's all that matters to me.
Re: Kid Icarus Ignites 3DS Sales Spike in Japan
Anyone who is hating on the Vita should stop. It's doing poorly now, but will pick up as soon as Sony releases the PS4. Right now Vita is in direct competition with PS3 (stupid if you ask me) so that is why it is struggling. It is also a decent amount more expensive than 3DS, especially after buying a memory card for it. As soon as people stop comparing it to PS3 in terms of graphics it will start doing well. I'll probably never get one, but this is how I see it.
Re: Gearbox: "No Other Platform Can Do What Wii U Can"
Did you? Did you have to do that? I wasn't thinking about how long it was until E3 until now. 68 days, that seems like an eternity.
Re: Feature: How 3DS Brings a New Dimension to the DS Family
I disagree that the original DS wasn't modern tech when it came out. In fact, I would say that the 3DS is in the same boat as the original DS was when IT came out. 3DS is borderline impressive at the moment, but it will soon become old tech. I'm sure the games are going to be amazing in the years to come but, in the end if its life, we're going to be looking back on it probably a lot like we look back on the DS right now.
Re: Mutant Mudds Demo Coming This Week
This game is AWESOME!!! Skip the demo and just get it. The music alone is justification enough.
Re: Five Glorious Minutes of Fire Emblem: Awakening Video
I'm gonna be pissed if this game doesn't come to North America. I love the Fire Emblem series, especially the ones on Gamecube and Wii.
Re: Feature: The Mistakes of the 3DS Launch
Re: Mobile Dev: "Iwata Makes Me Fear for Nintendo's Future"
Re: 3DS, It's Your First Birthday in North America Today
@XCWarrior
Lol, you too? I found out about that on IGN last August and rushed out to get one. Cheap system + 20 free games = WIN!!!
Re: Ubisoft Ready for Digital Content Blitz on Wii U
E3 is going to be a nuclear explosion of Nintendo information. I'll be wearing a lead suit during the presentation.
Re: Feature: Our Favourite 3DS Games so Far
Kid Icarus is easily the best game on the system, not to mention that it's basically a new IP from Nintendo making it an entirely fresh experience. Mario 3D Land is an easy second.
1)Kid Icarus: Uprising
2)Super Mario 3D Land
3)Resident Evil: Revelations
4)Mariokart 7
5)Mutant Mudds
6)Pushmo
Those are the six that matter to me thus far.
Re: Vigil Games: "Wii U On Par with Current-Gen Consoles"
This article seems a bit unclear, but all I got from it is that they aren't doing anything to update the graphics of Darksiders II. I don't think (really hope they aren't) Nintendo is going to skimp on the graphics this time. The first line of games probably will be on par with what Xbox 360 and PS3 have to offer right now, but I'm really expecting some hardware that leaves a lot of room to grow. If Nintendo skimps on graphics this time, I'm done.
Re: Disney Epic Mickey 2 is Built For Wii
Lol, what are they thinking? This is going to be the last good game for the Wii and, just like every other system's death period, it will be the one that gets overall forgotten until it gets rereleased as a download later on. Paper Mario was the same way on the N64; great game, but I didn't buy it because I needed to save money for a Gamecube. I'm a big fan of Wii, but it started showing its years about two years ago. WiiU is going to use the old Wiimotes so why not just develop it for that and then port down to 360/PS3 instead of porting up to them?
Re: Ubisoft Fills In Assassin's Creed III Wii U Details
Re: GameStop to Sell 3D Classics: Kid Icarus Too
I got the free game, and I also made a point to try it for a few minutes BEFORE I started Uprising. All these old games just don't appeal to me nearly as much as they did when I was a kid and they were all new. Uprising's weapon system alone is greater than any NES game to date. Oh, well, now I have another title to add to the pile of classics on my 3DS. Free = win
Re: Darksiders II on Wii U to be Available on 'Day One'
Resident Evil Revelations is a great example if this system being used well. All of the menus are on the bottom screen and weapon changes can be made using buttons or touch with both being useful at different times. I can't wait to see my friends' faces when I show them how awesome this can be (they're mostly xbots).
Re: Resident Evil Revelations Producer Says Series Needs Action for Success
Re: Pokémon Back on Top of Japanese Charts
Just wait until tomorrow. Kid Icarus is coming.
Re: Fire Emblem Awakening Wireless Features Revealed
Sounds good to me. I'm buying this day 1 regardless.
Re: A New Pandora's Tower Trailer Is Here
NOA release please!!!
Re: Nintendo Download: 22nd March 2012 (North America)
More zombies [throws up]. I'm going to turn into a F***ing zombie before game developers stop spamming zombie games. How about evil bunnies a la Monty Python's Holy Grail? I wouldn't mind shooting down a herd of those.
Re: Talking Point: Why Wii U's Image Must Grab Attention
All I really ask is that we get the option to have black WiiU right off the bat. Nintendo said they were going to target core fans this time around and some cool black plastic would be one good step in that direction. A little green wouldn't hurt either. Deep green, not radioactive Xbox green.
Re: Surprise! Disney Announces Epic Mickey 2 for Wii
If they're making PS3/360 versions then I'm sure there will also be a WiiU version released alongside the Wii version. It would be stupid to let those high poly models and textures go to waste by only releasing it to Nintendo in regular Wii form.
Re: Intelligent Systems Rejected Modern-Day Fire Emblem Idea
I think that would be pretty cool as an offshoot for the series as long as they keep making medieval type Fire Emblem games too. Since having guns around always brings the issue of an overpowered weapon category, they could create a world where guns were outlawed and close to being forgotten. Getting a character with who uses guns would be either a huge part of the story or a relatively obscure side quest or battle condition. It would also be expensive to fund such a character since gun ammunition and upgrades would be rare. I think they could have made it work quite well, but there goes Nintendo being all scared of changing their games even though they aren't scared to change the way we play them.
@ #2
I wouldn't mind seeing another installment to that series since it's been, what, three years since we've seen a new entry? I finished Days of Ruin to 100% completion and then proceeded to completely destroy all of my friends in it so they don't really want to play it with me anymore. I need another game to coax them into more matches
