Nintendo has a storied history of riding the crest of the video game wave, starting with 1977's Color TV-Game, which was exclusive to Japan and kicked-off the company's habit of revising its hardware (four iterations appeared between '77 and '80). However, it would be the NES that marked Nintendo's true entry into the market; this 8-bit system single-handedly revived a flagging industry when it arrived in 1983, ending the generation as the best-selling console. From there on, Nintendo went from strength to strength, following it up with what is arguably the finest 2D video games console of all time in the SNES before dipping its toes into the world of 3D innovation with the N64.
That's when things started to take a bit of a downward turn for Nintendo. The N64 competed with the enormously successful PlayStation and largely held its own, until its successor the GameCube was soundly beaten by the PlayStation 2 and emergent Xbox in the following generation. Despite its poor commercial performance, the GameCube is still a remarkably well-loved console, and it has an excellent library of exclusive titles.
This is why Nintendo is a truly special developer, though. The commercial ups and downs over the years haven't affected the sheer love and passion gamers have for its software and its hardware. The GameCube might not have sold as well as the PS2 or Xbox, but whenever a few Nintendo-loving friends are gathered to play games together, you can bet your bottom dollar they were huddled around a GameCube, playing the likes of Super Smash Bros. Melee and Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
Nintendo followed the GameCube with another decade-defining console in the Wii. That's when it decided to compete on its own terms, focusing on providing family-friendly fun for casual gamers and, more importantly, sheer innovation. No matter what you think of the Wiimote and Nunchuk, everyone had a go at them – even your Grandma. That's truly remarkable.
Sadly, the hype didn't carry through to the next generation, when Nintendo introduced the Wii U to a lacklustre reception. While it still innovated and focused on the family-friendly fun of the previous generation, the innovative touch controller failed to catch on like the Wiimote did – likely because even Nintendo couldn't figure out anything fun to do with it. There was also loads of confusion regarding what it actually was: a Wii peripheral? Or the Wii in HD? The marketing team failed to communicate to those it had won over with the Wii what the follow-up product offered that the Wii didn't.
But, much like with the GameCube, the failure of the Wii U commercially didn't stop us Nintendo fans from falling in love with it as hard as we have any other Nintendo console. In fact, we defy anyone who owned a Wii U to admit that they didn't love it. Say whatever you want about the GamePad but Nintendo's foray into HD gaming introduced us to some of the company's best video games ever – Super Mario 3D World, anyone? So much so that the Switch is relying on a bunch of Wii U ports to keep up momentum!
Fortunately, Nintendo's fortunes would swing around once again when the Wii U's successor arrived on the scene last year. The Switch is a pure Nintendo console; it's at once a portable and home console, allows for impromptu multiplayer sessions thanks to the detachable Joy-Con and the much-maligned motion controls from the Wii make a triumphant return. It also helps that the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey arrived in its first year, of course.
This is all without mentioning Nintendo's portable systems, which have arguably been even more successful than their console offerings. The Game Boy was an absolutely remarkable little machine which basically everyone owned. The ability to play the likes of Tetris while on the train to work was a godsend back in the day.
Following it up, we got the Game Boy Color, which was more of an upgrade than a successor. We had to wait for the Game Boy Advance for the true follow-up, which had a truly extraordinary library and a whopping three different models by the end of its lifespan.
Nintendo then did the unthinkable and dropped the Game Boy branding, introducing us to the Nintendo DS. It opened the door to the world of touch gaming, and the second screen allowed for experiences we'd never had before. The 3DS carried on the legacy, despite a bit of an initial falter due to a lukewarm reception to its 3D visuals (and starting retail price). And it's still going strong, with an incredible library of classics and a bunch of different SKUs to pick from.
Looking back at Nintendo's remarkable lifespan made us realise that it isn't immediately clear where each of the consoles sit in the ranking order. It isn't as simple as the best-selling console wins, as some of our favourite games of all time arrived on the consoles that many would consider failures, like the Wii U and GameCube.
So we decided to rank every single Nintendo console that ever launched from worst to best and did it in the fairest manner possible. We put it to a vote, with every Nintendo Life staffer putting together their own individual ranked lists. We then gave each position a score, tallied it up, and settled on the following list. Enjoy!
13. Virtual Boy (1995)
The Virtual Boy suffered from a case of far too much ambition. It was Nintendo's, and the world's, first attempt to bring VR and 3D gaming to our homes. Sadly, it wasn't to be as the Virtual Boy was both a critical and commercial failure.
The reasons are numerous: the monochrome display was underwhelming, the price too high, and the games were largely poor. It also didn't help that players experienced dizziness, nausea, and headaches even during short playing sessions and scientists later concluded that the Virtual Boy could cause permanent brain damage. Wowzers!
Still, the Virtual Boy will always go down in history as the first attempt to bring VR and 3D gaming to our homes – an impressive feat when you consider that 3D wouldn't be truly established until the 3DS a whopping 15 years later. Meanwhile, VR had a small, yet also ill-fated, comeback 20 years later.
12. Game Boy Color (1998)
Now that the Virtual Boy is out of the way, something had to come second last, didn't it? Sadly, the Game Boy Color ranked lowest in our list – and that's likely down to a lacklustre list of exclusives that just straight up failed to live up to the incredible Game Boy.
In fact, the only truly notable exclusives were Pokémon Crystal and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons. That's pretty poor for a console that lasted five years and demonstrates just how much it relied on that epic Game Boy back catalogue.
11. Nintendo Entertainment System (1985)
Next up is the Nintendo Entertainment System, or Famicom to the Japanese, which is truly a victim of its age. This was Nintendo's first foray into the home console market and it was an unmitigated success, ending the generation as the best-selling games console.
While we're all probably a bit sick of the games by now, the list of exclusives is nothing short of remarkable. We got a whopping four Mario games, the first entries in the Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Final Fantasy, Castlevania, and Punch-Out!! franchises, and the likes of Duck Hunt, Ducktales, Contra, Kirby's Adventure, Blaster Master, and Ninja Gaiden.
Sure, there are Nintendo consoles with far better libraries, but it's clear as day that Nintendo entered the console market with an absolute bang. In fact, the success of the mighty NES Mini this decade demonstrates the sheer love gamers still have for this system.
10. Game Boy (1989)
Ah, the mighty Game Boy – Nintendo's first foray into handheld gaming was an absolute smash hit, outselling the rival Game Gear, Lynx, and TurboExpress by a considerable margin. The reason? The games, of course!
The Game Boy is basically the NES of Nintendo's portable systems. It has a bunch of absolute smash hit titles like Tetris, Pokémon Red and Blue, Gold and Silver, and Crystal, Wario Land, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Metroid II, Mario Tennis, and Kirby's Dream Land.
This is the system that introduced Pokémon to the world, and for that alone it should be applauded.
9. Game Boy Advance (2001)
If the Game Boy is the NES of Nintendo's handhelds, The Game Boy Advance is the SNES. It built on everything Nintendo learned with the Game Boy to deliver the ultimate 2D Nintendo handheld.
The visuals got a bump up to 32bit, which made it even more powerful than the SNES, and it supported the entire back catalogue of Game Boy games, providing an absolutely enormous library.
But, as ever, a console lives and dies on its games and the Game Boy Advance didn't disappoint here. Notable releases include The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Metroid Fusion, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire, Emerald, and the birth of the Mario & Luigi franchise. This is also where us westerners got a first taste of Fire Emblem, which was previously a Japanese exclusive.
The Game Boy Advance was such a success that Nintendo provided not one but two hardware updates. The Game Boy Advance SP introduced a back light to their lineup of handheld consoles for the first time ever and the Game Boy Micro might be the niftiest SKU ever. It was tiny, with an absolutely gorgeous screen – and, more importantly, it included a headphone jack where the SP didn't.
8. Wii (2006)
The Nintendo Wii is an odd console, looking back. It followed the less-than-successful but nonetheless much-loved GameCube and marked Nintendo's move away from competing directly with the likes of the PlayStation and Xbox, and instead established itself as the king of casual gaming.
Though there was plenty of hesitation about motion controls before the launch, the Wii won over just about everybody. Wii Sports helped a lot with that, providing a bunch of fun minigames that showcased the sheer creativity of the Wiimote and nunchuk.
Those who never really warmed to it? Well, there was always Nintendo's ever-excellent library to dig through. Notable exclusives include the critically-acclaimed Super Mario Galaxy games, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Xenoblade Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns, No More Heroes, The Last Story, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Red Steel 2.
The Wii was also the first Nintendo system to provide the Virtual Console, which allowed us to play through classic Nintendo games for a small fee, and introduced WiiWare, which helped kick off the indie wave.
Towards the end of its lifespan, the Wii got a brand new SKU in the Wii Mini as well as the Motion Plus, which allowed far greater precision when using motion controls.
7. Nintendo DS (2004)
The Nintendo DS is the Wii of Nintendo's handheld systems, prioritising innovation over technical prowess – though it still had that in abundance thanks to the introduction of the capacitive touchscreen and 3D gameplay.
The dual screens is where this system really shone though, providing us with a ton of unique gameplay experiences. The most notable of these include The World Ends With You, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Elite Beat Agents, Trauma Center, Brain Training, and Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
We also got some epic exclusives like Mario Kart DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Pokémon Black and White (which introduced 3D visuals for the first time in Pokémon), and Advance Wars: Dual Strike.
Though the initial design was a bit of a chunky eyesore, the DS Lite remains one of Nintendo's best handheld designs of all time. It was further refined with the DSi, which introduced the Nintendo DSi Shop. For the first time ever in a handheld console, we could download games from a digital store.

I agree with the top 3 100%! 4 for me is the Gameboy
Ohh man this comment section is going to be explosive lol! I've only had 5 of these but seems like a good list!
I love my switch but its a bit early to decide if its number 1.
I would still put the GC on first place. The variety of exclusives was simply astonishing.
My list:
1. GC
2. Switch
3. SNES
4. Wii
5. Game Boy Advance SP
(All I ever had from the big N)
The end is nigh, I’m here before the rants. Don’t forget me, when it’s all over.
My Top 7 Nintendo games that i have :
1. Switch
2. 3DS
3. NDS
4. Wii
5. Gamecube
6. GBA
7. Wii U
After reading I have found one mistake. Gold, Silver, and Crystal were all exclusive to the Gameboy Color. They weren’t on the Gameboy as they were the first games that were in full color.
Gamecube made Nintendo irrelevant for years in the market and you guys rank it above the two biggest phenomenon of the videogame consoles, the NES and the Wii.
Can the Switch become Nintendo’s best console? Sure. But it’s far too early to put it ahead of the Super Nintendo (and probably four-five others as well).
Not about to argue with this list. It works for me.
I actually agree with this list for the most part. I'd probably drop the N64 down the list and bump up GBA but it's a good list.
GBC was AMAZING, it could play exclusive GBC games, GB / GBC games in color, and GB games with some color. My picks:
Not rated:
Virtual Boy, NES, SNES, N64 Never owned these systems. However from what I've seen of them, I would rate them lower than the others.
9. GameBoy
8. Wii
7. GameBoy Color
6. Gameboy Advance SP
5. Wii U
4. Nintendo DS.
3, Nintende GameCube. For me, still the best console.
2. Nintendo 3DS. The best exclusive handheld.
1. Nintendo Switch. The best of both the handhelds and consoles.
And to be fair, I really loved ALL of them. But we're picking favorites here.
I do not agree with most of these picks. The GBA is absolutely better than the other game boys by a long shot. I can't really rank them myself, but backwards compatability should boost most of these up quite a few slots.
Edit: also, maybe you should have included some of the revisions like the DS LITE, GBA SP, or maybe even the Wii Mini to keep consistensy
I... Actually agree with this list. Totally wasn't expecting that. Only thing I'd do is maybe move N64 and SNES down a slot each.
@ReaderRagfihs Haha exactly what i thought!
And on that note: Wii U at No.6?! WTF!
@jjmesa16 I think they didn’t say Gold and Silver because you could technically play them on the original Game Boy still. Crystal had the cart that was GBC-exclusive.
That was an interesting time overall; it’s hard to call the Game Boy Color an all new system. But I do take your position since Gold and Silver were made to take advantage of the expanded pallet.
@jjmesa16 Nope! As someone who played Pokemon Gold in monochrome, that's not the case. What happened back then was that many games were aimed at Gameboy Color, but were still (mostly) playable on Gameboy. This included games like Link's Awakening DX, Pokemon Gold & Silver, and Game & Watch Gallery 2 & 3. That's why shiny pokemon sparkle, so that you could still tell they were special on the original gameboy.
Haha, the Wii U nearly made top 5? LOL, that's really gonna grind up some of the users around these parts...
1. SNES
2. 3DS
3. Switch
4. NES
5. Wii U
6. Everything else
@Zkibu gamecube arguably failed due to poor marketing, lack of DVD playback and Sony's domination at the time. Not at all because it was a bad console.
One of the most ridiculous lists I’ve ever seen.
I agree with most of this list. But for me the GC will always be number 1. I spent almost all of my spare time as a child playing it and it's the console that turned me into a Nintendo fan.
1. GameCube
2. 3DS
3. Switch
4. Wii U
5. DS
My top 5
13. Virtual Boy
12. Game Boy Color
11. Wii U
10. Game Boy
9. Wii
8. Switch
7. DS
6. 3DS
5. NES
4. N64
3. GBA
2. Super Nintendo
1. Gamecube
WAY too early for me to rank the Switch any higher right now.
1. Wii
2. Gamecube
3. 3DS
4. Switch
5. DS
6. N64
7. GBA
8. Wii U
i never tried an NES, SNES or a Gameboy, (other then VC.)
Apples and Oranges.
The SNES had brilliant lineup, the N64 had few but several genuine greatest game ever shouts, the Wii had a truely innovative controller that allowed everyone to play, the Switch brings handheld and console together.
But for me the Wii U was the console that I was obsessed with. Let’s just say Nintendo is very good at what it does.
Sorry but the Switch is NOT better than the Wii. The Wii had a messaging system, Netflix, Amazon Video, Hulu, YouTube and a proper browser all on top of a amazing library of games. The Switch has a lot more work to do before getting to that point. Hell, you can't even use YouTube properly on a third party dock, when it comes to the Switch.
@LightyKD
Switch > Wii
1. Switch has a normal controller.
2. Switch has it's own screen.
3. Switch can be played without the TV.
4. Switch has better games.
5. I really do not care about a browser, netflix or a message bord on my GAMING console.
The Wii U is not top 10 material, it's a very poor piece of hardware. Even just setting it up was a chore with too many wires and its best game was Mario Maker which was ported to 3DS.....
BotW is listed as a Switch exclusive? Lol ok.
Switch at No1? Come on, stop playing to the gallery. It's an excellent system but no way should it have even been included in this list. It and the 3DS line are still about so you can't make definitive judgements about their full history at this point.
@WaveBoy completely agree. NES at 11 out of 13 from worst to best is utterly stupid. That console changed everything. The original gameboy also shouldn’t be that low
@LightyKD
Why would you like to have capped 1080p YouTube when smartphones and TV’s under 500€ can display 4K (smartphones at 1440p tho) in that app. Also, YouTube on Switch only supports 30fps.
I was thinking about this only a few days ago strangely 🤔 not quite sure Switch should be first as it's portfolio includes a ton of Wii U games so far. The rest of the list sounds fair 👍
@LightyKD
OMG !
Youtube on Switch can display until 1080p & 60 fps (If the video supported). 🤓
Can Wii deliver that specs ? 🙃
1st and 2nd I agree with
@Buizel Nothing wrong with the hardware, the games were the problem. You know those things why people buy a GAMING-console
Such a weird article. It is posed as a ranking of the systems themselves, not the catalog of games available for it. I think this can be seen in Switch being ranked #1 and Wii U being so high on the list. I actually agree with the Switch being #1, and it has an absolutely amazing library for a system less than 2 years old, but if we're comparing the entire library, it can't hold a candle to the SNES library (yet).
Where the article gets a bit contradictory to me is that the GBC is ranked lower than the GB, when it is a vastly superior device in every way. Unless of course, you are talking only about original titles.
Either way, I'd say this article needs some clarification and a bit of direction. What do we mean when we say "best" ? The most commercially successful? The most impactful system for it's time? The system with the best library of games? The system with the games that are still the most fun to play today? I understand each staff member voted, but I would assume each individual had their own criteria on how they determined which system was "best", which resulted in what I would considered a disjointed and somewhat nonsensical list.
Well I think that does it... Putting the Switch at number 1 when it's only been on the market for less than 2 years surely proves beyond doubt that these lists are an absolute sham and are made purely to promote the Switch. The Switch has been great so far, and when it's all said and done, I can see it ranking highly on my list, but it's far too early to rank it.
So NintendoLife's lists/"guides" have gone:
Best Zelda ever: Switch game
Best Mario ever: Switch game
Best Monster Hunter ever: Switch game
Best Smash Bros ever: Switch game
Best console ever: Switch
Best Metroid ever: Oh my God, not a Switch game!! (oh, but only because there isn't one yet...)
Jesus... If ever anyone wants to know what recency bias is, just show them these lists.
Also, you may want to use a different photo to represent the Switch. The one you've chosen doesn't exactly scream "BEST EVER!".
NES at #11? lights pitchfork 😋
Fully agree with Switch at #1. Best console ever amongst ALL companies for me to date TBH
Respect the thought and work put in and largely agree with number one but the rest of the list would be quite different for me. Not much love for the NES
#1 N64
#2 SNES
#3 NES
#4 Wii
#5 Gamecube
#6 Wii U
#7 3DS/2DS
The rest I don't really care.
Who do people paint Xbox as some kind of winner that generation? It failed just as bad as GameCube did against the behemoth that was the PS2... BTW this list is an absolute joke
Ooinions are opinions... but I think there's a few things I can argue.
While I absolutely loved the N64 for its high moments, it also had massive game draughts, turned off 3rd party due to the cartridge based decision, and most games haven't aged well. Gamecube continued the alienation by not offering standard discs, odd color console, and some games like Mario Sunshine not quite living up to its predecessor. Wii U - similar to N64, had it's share of droughts, a wonky toy like controller, and market confusion. If I had to rate the consoles I have played, I'd go like this:
1) SNES
2) Switch
3) NES
4) 3DS
5) DS
6) N64
7) Wii
8) GB
9) Gamecube
10) Wii U
None of these systems were horrible, they all had some great games. Wii U to me was the least innovative, most vanilla play it safe games, and small list of games with no 3rd party support.
I do love the GameCube but the DS had an absolutely brilliant library. It has to be the best library of games on a console and especially a handheld. The sheer variety of both first-party and third-party games means I'm still discovering hidden gems now.
#1 Wii U if you don't care about sales it is the most capable home system with amazing games. As I've said before something like the first 14 if 21 have released on the switch are just Wii U games.
#2 SNES though definitely limited by it's power, though not at the time, it hot the perfect spot of awesome bit graphics that weren't too simplistic. Also the music on many games was amazing.
#3 Switch it's like the Wii U minus the tablet and you can play outside. (I still think it's the biggest missed opportunity to not be able to wirelessly connect it to the dock for tablet play, full Wii U ports, especially Nintendoland)
#4 3DS
#5 N64
#6 GCN
I'm just the right age to own every Nintendo system and I'd say the rest basically tie. Aside from the Virtual Boy, it was fun for a little bit but not much longer than a month.
What?! Virtual Boy in last place?! RIGGED! I didn't even read the rest!
In all seriousness though, it's not a bad list. You could rearrange it a few different ways and I'd probably still be perfectly happy with it.
Ah... The sweet, sweet clicks...
The console that gave us mario world and street fighter 2 should be number 1
The NES being #11 is a joke. It's the most influential system of the last 30 years. Without the NES there wouldn't be a 2nd video game boom. I would flip the NES and WiiU at least. The WiiU was a fart in church, and I like the WiiU, but it was the Wii's stepchild.
What's most annoying about everyone of these lists is the number 1 spot is always switch related - like guys, it's a good system with some solid games so far - it's not the second coming...jeez
@link3710 Ahh ok
@sanderev better games is highly debatable
Galaxy 1&2
Xenoblade Chronicles
Dead Space Extraction
Conduit 1&2
House of the Dead Overkill
Sonic Colors
The Last Story
Sin & Punishment 2.....
I can keep going. Also, I see that many people replying to me are going on and on about YouTube. YouTube isn't the central focus of my argument, it's features. Quite frankly the Wii does more than the Switch. I'm not saying that the Switch is a bad console, I'm saying that compared to the Wii and Wii U, the Switch is a baren console. Final thing, people hating on the Wii Remote, I hope you guys do know that the Wii Classic Controller Pro does exists.
Based on the criteria of - which system is the most fun to play today, this is how I would rank them. This is not the same as my "Favorite" consoles or most impactful.
1. Switch
2. SNES
3. 3DS
4. DS
5. GBA
6. GCN
7. Wii U
8. Wii
9. GBC
10. NES
11. N64
12. GB
13. Virtual Boy
Based on what I currently feel...
1. Nintendo 3DS
2. Switch
3. SNES
4. Nintendo DS
5. Game Boy Advance
6. Wii U
7. Wii
8. GameCube
9. Nintendo 64
10. NES
11. Game Boy Color
12. Game Boy
13. Virtual Boy
Switch is quickly starting to overtake the 3DS. Also, I judge the console based on what they support out of the box. The 3DS having access to BOTH the DS and 3DS library, the Wii U being compatible with Wii, Wii running GameCube games, GBA running GB & GBC etc. etc.
Wouldn't surprise me if Switch comes out on top in the end, but for now, the 3DS is more dear to my heart than any console before it.
My list (I'm going to separate home and handheld because it's hard to directly compare them. Plus, while I'm sure it would eventually rank highly, I'm not going to include the Switch because it's only been on the market for less than two years!! As my list doesn't exist purely to shill the Switch, this shouldn't be a problem):
Home:
1. SNES
2. GameCube
3. N64
4. Wii U
5. NES
6. Wii
Handheld:
1. GBA
2. GB/GBC (I consider GBC an enhanced redesign rather than a whole new console generation).
3. 3DS
4. DS
The Wii U ranked higher than the Wii?
sure buddy sure...
Not including handhelds, my list looks like:
7. Nintendo 64
6. Gamecube
5. Wii
4. Wii U
3. NES
2. SNES
1. Switch
@DK-Fan Why not? You can run every Wii game AND the Wii U library. Can you do that on a Wii?
@Medic_alert Look I can understand people liking some Gamecube games. But lately, perhaps due to nostalgia, some vocal people on gaming websites or something else there have been people openly declaring the Gamecube is a "fantastic console". Based on the decline it caused Nintendo the Gamecube cannot be considered a "fantastic console" or absolutely not a beast. It was profitable yeah, but that is the only silver lining anyone can say about it. Nintendo knew if they didn’t radically change their direction, they may not be in the home console business for much longer.
I love them all equally
@NicolausCamp Agreed, and also the Wii games usually look a little bit better when played on a Wii U. So yeah, definitely Wii U > Wii.
I love all of Nintendo's systems, including the Switch, but the SNES is still my favorite console of all time. It was a massive upgrade from the already-great NES, with so many amazing games on it! It was the console that introduced me to gaming, too.
@NicolausCamp I understand that logic too, I would have to say however that I think they all need to be based on their own individual merits and library rather than their ability to plan another systems games. But I definitely see where you are coming from.
Chinatown wars was not exclusive to ds. A port also came to PSP.
I haven't owned too many Nintendo consoles, but my list would probably go something along the lines of:
1. 3DS
2. Wii
3. Wii U
4. DS
5. Switch
That's so far. The Switch still has plenty of time to go yet.
Just here for the salty comments. 😁
My personal top three would be 3DS, Switch and SNES.
1. Sega Genesis
I'd love to know what was going through the head of whoever chose the photos... "We're going to show that the Switch is the best console of all time and we're going to use 1-2-Switch and Just Dance to prove it!"
Wow. It's rare to come across a list I totally disagree with ;P
I have owned every of one these during their heyday other than the Virtual Boy (though my neighbor did have one when it came out which I played often).
While I think it's silly to rank anything like this, it was a fun trip down memory lane and a reminder that Nintendo has been a part of my life since I unwrapped my NES for Christmas when I was 5 years old.
@Medic_alert Well the commercial success is kind of vital for the future. Sure you can enjoy anything you want, but generally the consumer behaviours don't lie
I approve so much of the Wii being placed below the Wii U, and the Wii U not being ranked too low altogether.
Predictably the Switch is top despite having the weakest library of games, frankly it's nonsense having it top just as it is the NES at 11th???
For me it'd be
1. SNES
2. N64
3. NES
4. GameCube
5. Wii U
Beyond that it could be any order and the Switch may one day climb up that list, possibly even to the top as it's library grows but not as it stands
Gamecube had a terribly limited game catalog. Great titles - but not enough. Switch is still missing many key titles.
GBA or 3DS all the way. However much as I love GBA I think it's 3DS. That has the best catalog of any console (for me).
Way too early to say Switch is best. It is the newest, hence all the excitement. Wait until the next gen before you even consider placing the Switch on a list.
Gamecube retrospectively was a nice console, but at the time it kind of sucked. They lost rare after SFA, and third parties dried up so it was only Nintendo pulling the weight of games. 64 should be ranked above it.
You make a good point on GBC. GBC was my first and only Gameboy I got as a kid, yet IIRC the only exclusive color game I have is Perfect Dark. By the time the advance came out I was pretty much a console only person by then. I got a DS for free, but never used it.
N64 is way too high, and NES is way too low. They should just be switched. Otherwise, pretty much correct.
Some great games came out of the N64 era, no question, but most of the console's library aged about as well as milk.
And the NES just gave us so many freaking classics that are still excellent today. You can't just disregard something that important to gaming history. The fact that it's ranked lower than the OG GameBoy is absurd.
@LightyKD None of those games can compare to Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. Including the Galaxy games (which I actually didn't like that much; even 3D World was better)
@brunojenso Luigi's Mansion, Mario Sunshine, Zelda Windwaker, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Double Dash, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Zero, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2, Star Fox Adventures, Star Wars Rouge Leader, Star Wars Rebel Strike, F-Zero GX, Eternal Darkness, Paper Mario Thousand Year Door, Wave Race, about 4 Mario Party games and Super Smash Bros Melee off the top of my head but yeah lacking in games 😉
Oh and Animal Crossing
Thinking it over, and since my list is just as valid as the authors, and maybe more so since I own everyone one of these, and was alive during the launch of each of these. Here's my list.
1. SNES
2.NES
3. Switch
4. Gamecube
5. 3DS
6. Wii
7. N64
8 DS
9. GBA
10. Game Boy
11. WiiU
12. Game Boy Color (even though I don't consider it a different system than the Game Boy)
13. Virtual Boy
Obviously, the list neither reflects the real cultural impact each console had during its lifespan, nor the economic importance the devices had for BigN in the related competition in the video game market.
I love my Switch but it is ridiculous to call it the best Nintendo console ever at this point. The SNES had dozens of classic exclusives, as well as many great games that could also be found on the Mega Drive. What are the classic Switch exclusives? Mario Odyssey, Smash... Only two of the 25 highest rated Switch games on Metacritic are exclusives. Not sure we can hand over the trophy just yet.
Switch might end up being #1 over time, but hasn't had the cultural impact the NES or SNES had, not even the Wii (still #1 in retirement homes. haha) Maybe in 30 years we'll look back on the Swtich with as much nostalgia as we do with the NES and SNES, but I doubt we'll be buying a Switch Mini down the road.
I have a Wii U to this day. I barely touched it.
I can rank the consoles whose generation was best as having experienced it first-hand. So I will.
8. N64
7. Wii U
6. GBC
5. 3DS
4. Wii
3. DS
2. GBA
1. GC
@ItalianBaptist Technically the GBC was a new system, but in Nintendo's numbers they consider the GB, GBP, GBL, and GBC all "Game Boy".
@Medic_alert Don’t get me wrong I have a great collection of switch games and I love the system but I’d say it’s still early and it’s going in the right direction
I only have myself to blame for clicking on this. Sheesh.
@Zkibu I dunno...many Gamecube titles are lauded as best in their series, including Metroid Prime, Smash Bros Melee, F Zero GX, and Mario Kart. We also got some great new IP in Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness, Animal Crossing and Pikmin. There's also Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Mario Sunshine.
Ok so the site is called "NintendoLife" but you guys let someone who doesn't understand Nintendo's history write up a list that is completely messed up.
WiiU should be easily in the bottom 3-4, easily. It barely sold. It cost Nintendo a ton of money. It was a miserable failure. 3rd party companies would barely touch it.
The fact that the WiiU was listed above the NES makes me question the authors age or even knowledge in general.
How the hell can the system that solely revived the US market after the Atari 80's crash be ranked the 3rd worst Nintendo console? What are you smoking?
The GBC could play the entire library of GB games and then some. So how is it worse? Lack of GBC only games? You don't have guidelines that make sense.
The GBA being ranked where it is, you didn't own a GBA.
The GC was considered a market failure even when it had a bunch of great games.
The Nintendo 64 hurt the hell out of Nintendo vs Sony, but gave us OOT and Mario 64 and Majora's mask.
I just don't get this list at all. It was written by someone who doesn't understand Nintendo, the market and how each system affected gamers at the time of release.
I can't believe you ranked Switch #1 when it hasn't been on the market for 2 years yet. That is ridiculous.
I mean, I know that these things are subjective, but I don't think that a millennial should write this.
His list did not show he knowledge, but showed us that he is clueless.
@Medic_alert Did I truly said that? And by the way creativity doesn't equal quality
Switch is not near the top... YET. It will probably get there but the library of quality exclusives is tiny.
DS, 3DS, and SNES are significantly overrated, IMO.
@Haywired also got to love how for the SNES, N64 and GameCube they list a lot of really great titles and then for Switch they have the likes of Snipperclips and Arms whilst also claiming BOTW as an exclusive to bolster its rather small library but the Switch is still the best because...............that's what we have to promote at the moment
3ds is still number 1 in my heart. Massive library- backwards compatibility and a system that is so stable an earthquake couldn't knock it. Difficult list to compile though.
My top 5 would go something like this:
1. Switch
2. SNES
3. 3DS
4. NES
5. Wii U
I was a very moderate PC and Playstation gamer during the N64, GCN and Wii days and it was the Wii U that got me back to gaming and Nintendo. Had a Wii though, but that was mostly just for parties. The 3DS also got me reeled in with a great library of games. I have loved handhelds since the Gameboy and the Switch is all I could ever have wanted. As long as it keeps getting awsome games, both new and ports (would not mind GTA V), it's just gonna extend the lead it has already taken!
I'm sorry, I love my Switch as much as the next guy, but there is no way it has surpassed the SNES yet. Maybe next year.
Putting the Switch above the SNES, 3DS and Gamecube is completely ridiculous. It might get there, but at this point, absolutely no way.
Maybe if ranking them based on the library less than 2 years in, it would win.
@Zkibu If you think this way, then Call of Duty is a better series than the Legend of Zelda. Not that I hate COD, but...
SNES as number 1 and Wii above Wii u and end easy top 5. Switch maybe 7'ish its not proved itself yet, still needs that core Pokemon game, metroid and a better infrastructure, software is now as important as hardware.
@delt75 [#100] Looking at everyone's list in these comments, I feel like yours echoes mine 100% (though I must admit that I've never owned a Wii U or a Virtual Boy). Why do so many people love the N64 and GC so much? Some great games to be sure, but way overrated by Nintendo fans on the internet.
@Buizel Of course there are some people who are enjoying those games you mentioned. However never ever outside of gaming forums I have heard someone praising Gamecube. Nintendo certainly took action and changed completely their direction with the Wii. They did it because nobody bought Gamecube. If you want to be in this business you have to deliver
Ah, just saw the article was written by Glen. That explains a lot. He doesn't actually do basic research before he writes an article.
When I bought a switch on launch, I had not touched a Nintendo console since the original NES in the early 90's.
I was a Sega/PC/Playstation gamer all these years. Getting a switch, however, and playing BOTW, was like entering a long lost world. There was nothing like it on the PS4 or PC.
I have been (re)discovering Nintendo ever since. I soon bought a 3ds, and a classic SNES afterwards. All my gaming time is spent on Nintendo now; my two PS4's do not get turned on for months. And after the arrival of Civ 6 and Diablo on switch, I can finally retire my PC.
This has been my most enjoyable gaming period ever. I know that Nintendo is another corporation and all that, but if nintendo were a person, I would hug them.
And a great part of all this has been Nintendo Life and its great, positive, community. The internet seems to be drowning in a sea of negativity these days, but NL, and its community are a notable exception. I just want to extend my thanks to NL and all of you commentators for not giving in to the nihilism and pessimism that surrounds us almost everywhere else.
Not going to argue the whole list but seeing the NES so low on the list tells me this list was influenced heavily by a younger generation. Such an influential console with a ridiculous library of games. The console that started it all deserves a higher spot.
Wow this site really sucks at ranking things these days lol
Honestly, putting the Wii U above the every single Game Boy? What have they been smoking?
It always surprises me when I hear people say that the GameCube didn't have a great library or didn't have great third-party support. Compared to the Wii and Wii U (and even perhaps the N64 considering the lack of Japanese support for it), the GameCube had great third-party support. Sure, it didn't get everything, but when I think generally about the big multi-platform games of that generation, the GameCube tended to get them. The likes of: Resident Evil, Burnout, Soulcalibur, Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, Super Monkey Ball, Need For Speed, Tales of Symphonia, Sonic, Timesplitters, Viewtiful Joe, SSX, Prince of Persia, Hitman, Skies of Arcadia, True Crime, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Splinter Cell, FIFA, Madden, NBA, WWE, etc. During the subsequent Wii and Wii U eras I would've killed for the kind of AAA third-party support the GameCube received. And obviously that's not even mentioning Nintendo's titles (Smash Bros. Melee, Wind Waker, Mario Sunshine, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin, etc.)
14. Virtual Boy

8. Wii
7. Wii U
6. Game Boy Advance
5. Nintendo Entertainment System
4. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
3. Nintendo Switch
2. Nintendo 3DS
1. New Nintendo 3DS
Switch is off to a brilliant start, but it still needs to build its library and, perhaps, refine its hardware design a bit in future iterations.
@Zkibu Gaming forums seem to be famous for praising things that you will never hear anyone praise in real life.
@Gorfvic20 Thanks! I get why the Gamecube still gets love. It was probably the first Nintendo console of the majority of the readers on here. So I get that. I loved the N64 when it came out, but as I was just reminded by the PS Classic, mid-90's polygon graphics don't hold up well, and I don't think the N64 holds up that well either. The NES and SNES have held the test of time to the point just about every indie company is copying the look of those early games. Those two systems have had the biggest impact on the video game industry.
snes should be #1.
I'm going to say it right now. Your list sucks. Not objectively, or subjectively. Its just outright terrible. You seriously put one of the greatest, influential and most beloved consoles of all time a few slots away from dead last? The rest of the list isn't so great either.
Such little respect for the NES.
Some Nintendo systems just weren't good, either from bad marketing or design. The Wii U and Game Cube, systems I enjoyed, fell into this trap. The NES literally got the industry as a whole back on its feet, and the SNES and Gameboy made Nintendo a household name.
My personal list. Not just considering graphics and games, but also what it did for the industry as a whole.
13: Virtual Boy
12: Wii U
11: Game Boy Color
10: Game Boy Advance
9: Wii
8: Nintendo DS
7: Game Cube
6: N64
5: Game Boy

1. AMAZING
GCN
N64
THE NES IS THE GREATEST CONSOLE OF ALL TIME. Hence...Nintendo online went with it immediately...hence the mini NES...hence the fact that decade after decade, those games come back!
1. NES
2. SNES
3. N64
4. Switch
If the Switch adds in most of the NES games, it’ll move to #1. But at this point, it is way too early for it to be #1.
The N64 fell into the same issue as the GC, Wii and Wii U. There were some amazing titles for them, but there wasn't enough of them to sustain the console for the hardcore gamer.
@carlos82
Haha, so true.
NintendoLife: "Switch is greatest console of all time because Snipperclips".
SNES will always be #1. So many timeless classics.
@Medic_alert To you it can be the greatest system ever made, but that is probably because you happened to be the target audience. I am just saying that people buy different games to fulfill different jobs. Like in music the Operas has different audience than Pop concert - no brainer right? Gamecube was directed for so little niche audience that it was irrelevant against its competition. It was baffling direction to take when considering that the Nintendo's brand have been since the 80's "gaming for everyone". It failed completely to live that expectation which resulted a complete flop saleswise
Nah.
First and last yes, otherwise no... couple hard choices in there.
13. VB
12. GB
11. NES
10. GBC
9. GBA
8. NDS
7. Wii
6. SNES
5. N3DS
4. N64
3. GCN
2. Wii U
1. Switch
I have no list because there is no point in starting wars
Also I just don't have a list because each system has games I love on them! So this list and anyone's list is irrelevant to me!
Poor list and silly article geared only toward cheap clicks. I stopped reading with Wii and NES being below WiiU. GC and WiiU really hurt Nintendo regardless of them having good games.
Yeah I agree with others on here. There is no reason for the NES to be so low. I realize that younger gamers may not have experienced it when it released and just compare the graphics of the games. I did play the NES when it first launched and have been an avid gamer ever since, and I have no problem with the Gamecube and Switch being so highly ranked (though I would still give the SNES the edge over the Switch for now, the Switch is definitely on its way to where it could take over the top spot). I realize that being able to play NES/SNES/N64 games on Wii and Wii U (and to some extent on 3DS and Switch) really adds to their libraries of games and makes the older consoles unnecessary now, but you have to take the consoles as to the impact they made in their own time too.
Not a fan of this list. Someone already mentioned recency bias and boy is that ever true of the Switch. Heck, that's true for the Wii U as well. It's inexcusable to put the NES and Wii so far down the list.
I'd like to address the numerous N64 and Wii U haters:
For me, Wii U is phenomenal mostly due to VC and backwards compatibility. Judging it by exclusives, I'd rank it much lower. But there's no other system that is capable of playing so many Nintendo games. It can play so many of the greatest games from NES, SNES, GBA, N64, Wii, GCN, Wii U, and Switch. That's amazing!
People who say N64 had only a few good games... I feel like they never really explored the library. There's way more than the famous titles like GoldenEye, Zelda, Mario. I could list several dozen great games off the top of my head without flinching.
This is how I rank their systems from worst to best (according to my region that is):
Home consoles:
7. Nintendo 64
6. GameCube
5. Wii U
4. NES
3. Wii
2. Switch
1. Super NES
Handhelds:
14. Pokemon Mini
13. Game Boy Light
12. Game Boy Pocket
11. Game Boy Micro
10. Nintendo DSi
9. 2DS
8. 3DS
7. New 2DS
6. New 3DS
5. Nintendo DS
4. Game Boy Color
3. Game Boy
2. Game Boy Advance
1. Game Boy Advance SP
Plug and Play and Others:
6. Color TV Games Series
5. Virtual Boy
4. Game and Watch Gallery Series
3. NES Classic Edition
2. Super NES Classic Edition
1. Arcade
Calling this a guide is questionable...
GTFO out here with the Wii-U being better than the NES
I figured it out, if you start to read these NL “guides” as if they’re a s**t post, then it actually becomes quite entertaining and less maddening!
EarthBound alone is why I would put the SNES at Number 1 in my opinion.
The Wii U is higher than the DS? Really?
@HammerKirby all industries, including gaming, exist in a series of tiers. Like different games has different jobs. For example Wii Sports is a low tier game. Brilliant game and sport setting is easy to understand even for newcomer. Top tier is probably somekind of Tactical RPG or complex strategy game. Every tier is important so they are not in ranking. You mentioned Zelda and COD. Those games have completely different jobs = they are interesting to different audiences. There is probably no finer or better selling 3d adventure game/tier than BoTW currently.
@carlos82 I still think, in comparison it was a thin library and only more than, VB, GBC, and Wii U. I loved my cube, and your list is pretty great – more top class games than I remembered for sure.
Without nostalgia:
1.Switch (best modern experience and so far)
2.Wii (best gaming with adult friends )
3.Wii u (good gaming experience with children )
4.Nes (childhood)
@wonderclassic I know right, I wonder where in the actual hell Glen Fox got this info from. The VB might cause headaches (not an issue for me personally), and has a few other problems. However, there is absolutely no risk of brain damage whatsoever.
Although, similar to the 3D on the 3DS, there is a risk of eye damage for children under the age of 7 or so (since their eyes haven't fully developed yet). Even then, this is only for people who are playing the console on an uneven surface, which is also pretty unlikely considering that the VB has to be played on a tabletop.
My list based on library of games, use of hardware, level of successful marketing on Nintendo's part, and impact on the gaming industry as a whole.
13. Virtual Boy
12. Game Boy Color
11. Game Boy
10. NES
9. Nintendo 64
8. Game Boy Advance
7. 3DS
6. Wii U
5. GameCube
4. Wii
3. DS
2. Super NES
1. Switch
The only problem I see here is for such a ranking to be made all the games must be across all the platform one form or another. That would make ranking first to last a unbiased and unfiltered ranking. As such I would rename this the most notable Nintendo Platform as the Official title instead and rank:
1. Switch
3. New 3DS XL
4. 3DS XL
5. 2DS XL
6. 2DS
Those others should be left as historical markers in Nintendo play book only. With the Notable mention of the Original NES as Nintendo restarting of the Console gaming era.
@AstralOrange64 I'm much more in line with your list than NintendoLife's. Good work!
A little early to call the Switch #1. SNES had the 'multiplats' of the time AND boasts a number of "masterpiece" titles (that still hold up to this day), so that spot is deserving if not higher.
No need for list here if you just always put the newest on top.
Feel like the game boy colour shouldn't have been penalised for its lack for games. It gave colour to prexisting games, it's an improvement on the game boy, slimmer and has a range of colours.
If I were to make a list:
13: Virtual Boy - an objective failure
12: Wii U - it sold terribly and had a weak exclusive library
11: Gamecube - didn't do well but it had redeeming qualities
10: N64 - a flawed console with a great game library
9: 3DS - it did a great job of improving upon the DS
8: Wii - the system that saved Nintendo
7: Switch - a fantastic evolution of what a Nintendo console could be
6: DS - it did a great job of moving the portable Nintendo forward
5: Game Boy Color - it made the best portable even better
4: Game Boy Advance - it was a great evolution of the Game Boy
3: Game Boy - it was a revolution for it's time
2: NES - it set new standards and changed the industry for the better
1: SNES - it has the games that made Nintendo famous
@AstralOrange64 Yeah.. I agree. After 2019 or 2020, it may deserve first, but not when it hasn't even been out 2 years and hasn't realized its potential yet.
I'm not even going to open the comments until I'm home with a beer and beer accompanied snacks......I bet the NLife universe is imploding
In reality is put SNES at number 1, switch at number 2 cause it's only had 2 years but those have been amazing so far. Get SNES on the switch!
GameCube/Wii for me, then NES.
N64 for me. Nostalgia goggles for me
I’d agree about the Switch, but you got the WiiU and the Gameboy Color mixed up. The WiiU is the worst console I have ever owned. Yes, some of the software was astoundingly good but forcing the game pad on players was a user-hostile feature that shot Nintendo in the bum. Even in games where you could use the pro controller you still needed to default to the pad for some features (How hard would it have been to put a map button in Xenoblade X?!?)
The Gameboy Color meanwhile ran forever on 2xAA batteries rather than the AAA of before, had the IR port which meant I could use it as a TV remote and best of all a blinding version of Metal Gear Solid I would class as the best game in the series.
@WaveBoy
Oh, I always thought you loved the 3DS in the early days. Did you go off it? Or was it just the 3D effect that you liked rather than its library?
@Medic_alert 14% of the market. Compared to the the N64 "the cartridge system's" 30% that is pretty steep decline. I am sorry but seems like the majority of the market doesn't share your opinion. You do realize that they if they had continued like that they would have been out of the market?
I could never make a list like this, because I couldn't agree on an order.
But based on the "Woah"-factor, when playing these consoles, my two favorite consoles have to be the Nintendo 64 and the Nintendo Switch. The N64 because it was kind of the first real 3D gaming console (gameplay-wise with it's controlstick) and the Switch, because it feels like a real game console since a long time (just gaming and no multimedia nonsense).
Isn't this the same guy, who wrote that crappy Pokemon guide on beating Zapdos with a water type? If I was that incompetent, I would have gotten a P45. Pathetic.
So a couple things:
NES should be WAY higher!
Switch is definitely NOT #1, that spot is STILL occupied by the Super NES until the Switch matches the Super NES’s 3rd party support (and I’m not counting mobile game ports and indies).
My god!! Who wrote this? Someone from the competition has to have written this. Nintendo would be well on its way to bankruptcy if they listened to whoever wrote this.
Just my opinion, the Switch photo should not have it's worst game on there (1, 2 Switch). Put BotW on it or something!
Some I agree with, some I don't, but I'm not going to waste anyone's time giving my list, there's no point. I will say this much though, the 3DS is one of my favorite consoles since the Game Boy and SNES. I'm using the Switch quite a lot too these days, so we'll see if it topples any of them in the future, but I think it's a bit premature to give it the #1 spot when we're not even two years into the cycle.
If you go based on the number of awesome exclusives for the system, this list makes no sense at all.
N64 and Gamecube should be noway near the top.
3DS should be higher.
Absolutely ridiculous, did a 12 year old do this list? the original gameboy and SNES are the top two consoles even I know that. What the heck is the Wii U doing being 6th? as it’s clearly the one of the worst consoles Nintendo has ever made. Shocking.
I love the switch but it’s not worthy of number 1 yet.
My god!!! Lol! With the exception of virtual Boy, the most successful consoles are all in the bottom of the list. Laughable.
Just had to say that N64 pisses all over the GameCube.
No way has the Switch surpassed a good amount of those systems. ARMS is no system seller, its junk. This list is terrible, and I was fooled to give it a click.
"The Nintendo DS is the Wii of Nintendo's handheld systems, prioritising innovation over technical prowess – though it still had that in abundance thanks to the introduction of the capacitive touchscreen and 3D gameplay."
It's a resistive touchscreen, actually. That's why you want to use a stylus rather than your finger.
It is far, far too early for the Switch to be anywhere near the top five, especially after the lackluster year it just had. Seriously, was there anything notable besides Smash, a handful of (late) 3rd party ports, and maybe Octopath? Let's not forget the myriad of other issues it still has, like its ridiculous methods of playing online, lack of VC and the fact it still doesn't even have a browser and other system features which the Wii and Wii U had almost instantly.
I'd also rank the N64 the lowest out of the home consoles, outside of the obvious stuff a lot of games haven't aged particularly well (See Goldeneye and its sub 10 fps) or have been improved upon several times.
The Wii U as high as #6?! The original system as low as #11?!
Get out.
"Capitalising on the revival, Nintendo introduced the New Nintendo 3DS, which provided face tracking to improve the 3D imagery, performance upgrades, the Circle Pad, which served as a second analogue, and NFC support so you could use amiibo with 3DS."
The original 3DS had a circle pad. What was added was a "thumb nub." C'mon guys... get your facts straight!
NES and 3DS would be higher up on my list, if I were to make one. N64 would be lower too, haha.
I couldn’t possibly compare all of these systems though. It’s tough.
Today we are going to rate the fruit bowl.
At no 10, Purple Grapes
9, Pear
8, Plum
7, Orange
6, Pineapple
5, Satsuma
4, Apple
3, Apricot
2, Green Grapes
And at no1, Peach
I forgot Banana
Still gotta say that the Gamecube is and still is my favorite nintendo console, and I've been around since the Atari era. The gamecube, at least where I was, got picked on for the tiny discs, but other than that, there was not much load time (Try playing Crash 4 on all 3 consoles during that time, and tell me which one had less loading). It also suffered on getting some of the sequels to certain games (bloodrayne, the next legacy of kain in the series), but it was truly a great console. The Nes would be my next favorite, as I still remember being a kid and saving up the money to get one, then the fantastic games and memories I had with my brother. The worst one for me, and it's not going by the games, because the games were incredible, would be the N64. The controller was horrible, and if you played too long, the sweat from your hands made the analog even worse. Wii U was okay, Wii was good for it's time, Switch is ehh still to me, 3DS was great, but it lacked it's first year due to the bad launch, the DS was good, Gameboy (original) was great, Advance, not so much, Color...eh, virtual boy (didn't stay out on the market long, but what I remember playing about it...it was horrible). As far as the Super NES went...I ended up sticking with the Genesis through that era (my cousin had the Super, I had the Genesis...it fit perfectly like that considering we were always going back and forth). So yeah, worst was the Virtual Boy to me. Still though, Gamecube will always be my favorite, and I'm not sure why I can't get into the Switch.
Also, that must have been hard to categorize the Switch (hmm...console or handheld). Anyways, time will tell, and hopefully, the next console keeps nintendo strong.
@Medic_alert My argument was that Gamecube shouldn't be higher on the list than phenomenally popular Wii and NES. I pointed some reasons why Gamecube flopped on the marketplace and even had a music example and mentioned about the different "jobs" games do have. All you did was yelling rubbish and then gave me some anecdotes. You never gave me a better measure than impact on the marketplace or better creating a whole new market like the Wii did.
Merry christmas to you too
I'm not going to respond other than to say, pure clickbait at its worst.
7. Wii
6. Switch
5. N64
4. Famicom
3. Gamecube
2. Wii U
1. Super Famicom
Gameboy Color worse than the original? Go home Nintendolife, you’re drunk
This list is wrong on so many levels...
Terrible list. Wii U is not last just for pity. Great games sure. Cause third party still believed in Nintendo, and first party is always great. But the console was easily the worst of all, second only to the Virtual Boy. Game Boy Advance should easily be at least 3.
What's the Wii U doing in 6th above so many great systems? Hilarious.
I really think it's too early for Switch to be number one. It hasn't even been out two years, and while its launch year was amazing, this last year was merely decent (which is good enough, but hardly beats the 5-6 year lifespans of most of these systems, IMO).
My list:
13. Virtual Boy (Wario is really solid at least)
12. Game Boy Color (Kind of a stopgap system)
11. Game Boy Advance (Some great games like Advance Wars but lots of ports)
10. Wii U (a little light on the mega-hits, but if we're including BotW that helps)
9. Switch (as of now, but it's sure to move up once its completed its lifespan)
8. N64 (not many games, but a few of them are legendary)
7. Game Boy (quite a few hidden gems and was relevant for almost a decade)
6. DS (lots of games and neat tech. Could use a couple more legendary titles)
5. Wii (good innovation and lots of games helps balance out the tech issues)
4. 3DS (all-around strong system)
3. NES (groundbreaking titles and a ton of games)
2. GameCube (fantastic exclusives)
1. SNES (standard-setting controller and the best combined quality and quantity of the Nintendo libraries)
I was going to ask what were the objective basis for this, but then we have it at the last paragraphe before the very list:
"We put it to a vote, with every Nintendo Life staffer putting together their own individual ranked lists. We then gave each position a score, tallied it up, and settled on the following list."
People should take this more like "Nintendo Life's opinion on the best consoles" rather than the "Ultimate and Definitive List of Nintendo's Best of All Time"
N64 is too high by far and the Switch is a little too high but not as bad. I’d probably go with:
5. GameCube
4. Switch
3. Wii U
2. 3DS
1. SNES
Switch will probably surpass the Wii U and /maybe/ pass the 3DS depending on the strength of it’s Pokémon games.
The lists are very subjective if not predictable.
I would put the 3ds near the top, it's a one and only, but Nintendo have given up on it.
If we are judging on sales then the console that has sold the most would be top.
Innovation, the Switch.
Graphics. That would be the PS4.
@WaveBoy While you are spot on – I'm 28 – this isn't my list, its the Nintendo Life Staff's list. We put all consoles to a vote and tallied up the list to settle on this.
Personally, the GameCube is my favourite by an incredibly wide margin followed by the Wii U and at that point I don't really care to rank the rest. Switch probably sits mid-table for me right now.
NES is 11th yet the Switch is #1? lol...
Odd, I thought it was almost Christmas here. I must've fallen asleep over three months ago and somehow survived my winter hibernation, since it's apparently April 1st rather than a week before Christmas.
And let the CLICKBAIT continue.
It's all about personal preference. Aside from the disastrous Virtual Boy you can place the consoles in any order and it makes sense. Let's just agree Nintendo has made some damn great consoles.
The Switch is not on a SNES level yet. It might get there but it is not there yet.
Gameboy Color ranks much higher in my opinion, it had classics like Wario land 2 and 3..
@Medic_alert
Well Apples and Oranges are both Fruits but they are different.
We’re comparing consoles that are all game playing devices but are different.
You eat Cheese but you write with Chalk. They are totally unconnected.
So Apples and Oranges is a more appropriate saying.
Too early to call the Switch. For a handful of games and ability to play some NES games doesn’t make it better than Wii U for me yet. The Wii U had so much potential, especially if they had have just gone overboard on Virtual Console. Half of Nintendo’s Switch games are Wii U ports. RIP Wii U, taken from us too soon. Deserved higher than 6th place.
I would switch the NES and the N64 places.
The one thing I take away from this list is that I am a very different Nintendo fan to most of the NL staff.
Glad to see GameCube so high... two zeldas and two 3D Metroids is kind of a big deal. In reality though, DS, 3DS and GBA should be higher.
The funny thing about this list is that although it has some crazy choices it actually matches up perfectly with one aspect of Nintendo rankings. Nintendo always releases their systems in pairs:
pixel consoles - NES/SNES
poly consoles - N64/GC
motion controls- Wii/Wii U
single screen handheld - GB(C)/GBA
two screen handheld - DS/3DS
The funny thing is that the first iteration is always more successful but the second iteration always ends up being considered the better system. Even the comments section has alot of people (but not all obviously) matching up with this consensus. The upshot is we already know what Nintendo's next console will be - an upgraded hybrid system. The real question is what will Nintendo do 2 systems from now?
Sorry, but it's articles like these, that make me feel like alex is the only content creator who actually knows what he's doing. That ranking is ridiculous!
Nintendo DS will probably always be my favorite and for me deserves to be much higher on the list.
Honorable Gamecube was the last Nintendo console with modern hardware (on par with the competition). So it had more 3d party support than N64 cause it was easier and cheapier to program games for. So i disagree that it did suffer from a general lack of third-party support. Its true though it was a commercial flop cause people didn' t wanted to play multiformat on GC and PS2 library was unstoppable. PS2 also played DVD's. GC had mini DVD to avoid piracy.
I don't remotely understand this list. What criteria are you judging on? On what measures are you judging each system? Why do you consider the Game Boy Color a different system but not the DSi or New 3DS?
If you are going to make a list like this, put some real effort into it, and explain your reasoning clearly.
What is wrong with you people. Is this site now resorting to delusional trolling to drum up page views hits and revenue. That list reeks of sadly cobbled fake controversy just to hopefully drag new people in for shock value and perhaps commentary. Seeing where their 8bit lineup hit and the piss poor Wii U failure second only to the virtual boy bomb going up half the list is a joke. Wow just what is wrong with your staff writer on this???
I'll say Switch is the best when we get Mariokart 9.
Game Cube over Wii, no way.
My list is:
1. SNES
2. Wii
3. 3DS
4. DS
5. Switch
6. Gameboy
7. Gamecube
I don't care about the rest.
The switch is great, but we need more library to judge it.
It's all opinions, of course, but the NES is placed way too low on the list. It was absolutely a phenomena in it's time. For a time when I was a kid all video games were simply called Nintendo games. Until the NES, console game developers mostly just tried to emulate the sort of game play found in arcades. The NES is the beginning of a distinctive difference between arcade and console gaming. It's controller is iconic and still the base design for modern consoles. Many of the most loved franchises had their beginning on the NES. If you weren't there to experience it, I can understand how you may find NES games archaic now. It's hard to say what videogames would be like now without it. It may have been the most influential console ever.
1. NS
2. GCN
3. GBA
4. DS
5. 3DS
6. SNES
7. N64
8. Wii
9. Wii U
10. NES
11. GBC
12. GB
13. VB
See what I did there?
C’mon. How is the Wii and WiiU ahead of the NES? People give the NES games a lot of hate these days but there are at least 50 timeless games on that system that have a purity unmatched by many of the gimmicky and failed Wii/U era products.
I do not agreed with the Nintendo DS being ranked #7. I loved the Nintendo DS era because of a lot of good and interesting games for that system.
Like my favorite game, my favorite console is the one I am playing at the moment. No time to make silly lists that will change.
These list are tricky, and it doesn't help that's it's being worded at best to worst. How does one judge? It can't be power, else older system would be the worse. The one that stood out the most was the NES at number 11. Sure, it's old and not as powerful as today's systems, but Nintendo (NES) was synonymous with video games. I remember ten years ago or so an older lady heard the Super Mario Bros song and said, "All parents recognize that song." So the NES should probably be number one. So for the first three I would go, NES, Wii, SNES.
@NotTelevision I was expecting the NES to be number one because people treat it as some kind of sacred object. I wouldn't put it an number one, but #11 is ridiculous. Wii U and N64 may have their fans but their libraries had a few stellar games, but were too small to be in the league of the NES. Game Boy Advance was not at all impressive for the time it came out. Compared to the Atari Lynx (released in 1989), the GBA's graphics looks like it should have come out four years later, not twelve. And the original Game Boy simply rode the coat tails of the NES. In no specific order, I'd but the SNES, GC and 3DS in the top three, and the NES close behind.
"...Meanwhile, VR had a small, yet also ill-fated, comeback 20 years later."
I'm surprised, given how rabid VR fanboys can get, that they haven't got into some sort of apesh!t rage over that comment yet... publishing tons and tons of links "proving" somehow that VR is taking the world by storm and everyone saying the contrary is completely delusionnal...
I think the rankings of consoles is still perfectly debatable in a civilised way, as most posts here are showing. But just start dissing VR... and you're litterally, usually, asking for trouble...
@j-life I would have put the NES much higher on the list, but I think there are valid arguments for it not to be number 1. The SNES was (except for a few specific kinds of games) clearly the best console on the market for a few years. The NES, while crushing the competition, didn't look quite as good as far as graphics as the Sega Master System.
@TheFox Nobody new what a Master System was, and the graphics were still on the same level more or less to the NES. I'm judging more by cultural phenomenon. With the logic of other obscure systems looking better, then the SNES would lose points with the NEO GEO, with a much higher degree than the NES Master System. Game Cube/XBOX, Wii/360, Switch/XBox One, etc. Again, these are all opinions.
Your list is wrong. NES lower than Wii U? Enough said.
how dumb can you get NL the switch hasnt even gone through its life cycle so it shouldnt be on the list. but what ever generates attention for those hits right?
Schilling at its finest; time will vindicate me when I say that the Switch is Nintendo at its most creatively lacklustre. Additionally the hardware is a hot mess, months after sending the system in to fix my left joycon, I’ve now discovered that my right shoulder no longer reads as an input. Also the rails on the joycon continue to wear out against the brackets. The only real notable release by Nintendo was a game that would’ve been a better release on Wii u had they not gutted all its great functionality.
I have to add my list., LoL.
1.NES
2.SNES
3.N64
4.(original)GAMEBOY
5.new 3DS XL
6.Wii
7.Switch
8.Wii U
9.DS
10.Gamecube
I've owned every system Nintendo has ever released and can say I have had fun with every one of them and I only did a top ten but I have to give honorable mention to the Game boy micro I love that tiny machine and it is far and away the most portable system Nintendo has ever made , to this day I carry mine around in a eyeglass case., LoL.
@Painay Triggered much?
Sees 13-9: "Oh this won't be so bad"
Sees 8: "WHERE ARE YOUR PITCHFORKS YOU SAID YOU HAD"
@Hoho, I have to be honest I'm not a fanboy of the Switch yet though it is growing on me slowly only because of the great line up of titles available on the system., I am still let down by what happened with the Wii U it had so much potential to be great that got wasted they never gave it a chance it never got a price cut half the features the system was able to do never got implemented it was and is just a sad story when it comes to the Wii U I mean the Switch don't do half what was possible with the Wii U it's crazy to think about .
To rank the Nintendo Switch as The Greatest Nintendo Console Of All Time not even 2 years on the market is, in my personal opinion, incredibley premature and a bit cringe. It's certainly on its way but its still got a ways to go to earn that top spot.
Also GBA at number 8? Sacrilege.
I'd still put SNES at the top. And this isn't just blind nostalgia because my SNES Classic is the most satisfying console I've played in generations too. With all the complexity and options in modern consoles, sometimes I just like something simple and pure and basically perfect at the few things it does--and the SNES library is still one of thee most satisfying of all time imo, bar none.
"Snipperclips, ARMS, Mario + Rabbids" Greatest console of all time confirmed!
Ha, no, as much as I rag on these lists and their apparent policy of putting the Switch or Switch game at number 1 every time, I will actually say (as sacrilegious as it sounds), that unlike others, I don't have a problem with the NES being low. Yes it's a hugely important and iconic console, but generally I don't think its games have aged that well. Plus, I was a kid during the NES era, yet I don't feel that much nostalgia for it, compared to other Nintendo consoles.
@j-life Everyone knew what the Sega Master System was. Kids in my high school that had them and any store that sold video games carried them. Sure, it didn't sell nearly as well as the NES, but by that logic, no one knew what the Wii U or Game Cube was either. I didn't include the Neo Geo because that cost several times that of a normal system, and it really was obscure. I only ever once saw one store with it for sale.
@jjmesa16
Not only wrong but wrong about how you’re wrong. Common mistake though so no biggie 😘
Wii U Above DS?
EXCUSE ME WHAT?
Oh for heaven's sake. What millennial put this list together?
SNES should be 1. N64 and Wii should be higher. I'd be fine with Switch around 3 or 4 but it's too early to say it's the best Nintendo console ever. Give me Metroid, Star Fox, F Zero and another Xeno game along with a longer battery and better screen and then we will talk number 1.
The last 5 and the Virtual Boy I can live with but how did the Wii U score higher than the original Wii???
Love the Game Cube, but no way was it better than the N64. Wii is better than the Switch because of the Virtual Console alone.
Would have 2DS (original) on the list. For me it's the perfect handheld design.
Lemme help you with that list son. Rest assured this will provide a much more favorable consensus:
1. SNES
2. NES
3. Wii
4. Gamecube
5. Gameboy Advance
6. Nintendo DS
7. Gameboy
8. Switch
9. N64
10. 3DS
11. Virtual Boy
That was a fun read, in my $.02 the NES is ranked far too low and the N64 is ranked too high. The Game Boy should also be ranked higher.
Man...Chris Scullion trashes the NES too in his Atari Flashback review. "Once you start working your way through them it becomes clear that many of them have aged incredibly badly. We aren’t talking NES levels here, either".
What's up with NES haters at NintendoLife?
@NicolausCamp You can run many 8-bit and 16-bit videogame classics in 240p through glorious component on a late consumer CRT using a Wii. Can you do that on a WiiU?
Seriously though, WiiU had a bigger virtual console, but butchered NES, N64, and TG-16 emulation. Just about the only consoles that run quite well on WiiU VC are the SNES and GBA (which are both better on a Wii with a CRT, but that's personal opinion).
@sanderev SNES was awesome. Its honestly their best system ever. You're missing out man. Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana alone is worth the system. I can really tell who are 80/90s console gamers and 90/00s console gamers just from their lists. lol
@Romeo-75 I’m not saying that the switch has reached but after about year 3 if I’m not mistaken, the bulk of creators have done their best work on the system. year 2 is wrapping up, and I’m not impressed, especially by content that is pulled from somewhere else or very reminiscent of past titles. As an owner of Wii U, you probably already played Mario kart 8: almost two years in and not even an announcement of Mario Kart 9. Another thing to keep in mind for the switch is that whether or not Nintendo will admit it, it is both a successor to the 3ds and the Wii u. I expect an output from the 1st party that represents that fact. Since you mentioned the Wii u functionality; Can you imagine how great breath of the Wild would’ve been if it had the functionality of WW HD or pikmin 3 implemented?
The SNES should always always ALWAYS be number 1. And the NES 2 for single handedly saving the gaming market Atari killed
@WaveBoy You know I can't really say I understand why even a 28 year-old would make this list. I got a Gameboy at 5, when it was 5 years old and aging. I don't go back to play it that often now due to the poor quality of the screen, but I would easily rank it above the WiiU, which I owned and enjoyed but ultimately saw as a failure, despite a strong list of exclusives that I played and factored into my judgement.
Even for someone like me that didn't play a ton of SNES before getting a PS1 and getting immersed in polygonal games, I still see it as a much stronger system than the Switch, and of course I love my Switch.
@DarkCojiro it’s embarrassing
If I was going on personal preference, Wii and N64 would be way down, SNES would be quite a bit lower, all the Gameboys(especially GBA) would be much higher, as would the NES.
I stopped reading when I saw the NES was 3rd to last......
Not even an opinion. That is wrong. The NES is a far better console than the N64, GCN, Gameboy, both DS systems, and the Wii U, hands down.....
Mine:
1. Wii U
Why? MK8; Virtual Console
2. N64
Why? Bond 007; MK64
3. SNES
Why? DKC trilogy
4. GC
Why? MK double dash
Honourable mention: Gameboy
Why? The system that started my love affair with Nintendo.
FYI Switch looks great but yet to play one.
Thx for reading 😀
The NDS games library is legendary balancing both 1st and 3rd parties titles alike. GBA comes 2nd. No way in hell they ranked lower than N.switch. Switch and 3ds are seriously lacking 3rd parties support.
I see the logic in the list, but I but I could probably justify most orders lol. Some personal two cents...
-I agree with many here, I would rank the Gameboy Color above the Gameboy, and the Gameboy Advange (especially SP) far above those. Regardless of exclusives to the Color, it was a highly improved Gameboy at the time. I guess I just rank all the Gameboy/3DS family as increasing as they progress down the line.
-Switch might take top spot if it can get some good oldschool collections from Nintendo or something. It has a pretty amazing library, but some whacky gaps. We'll see how it goes. I did love Wii U's Virtual Console and games, probably putting it in the top spot. Either that, the Gamecube (got a lot of playtime out of me) or the SNES (which I never owned, but adore the games of).
@HawkeyeWii It depends entirely on what you mean by better. Do you mean more fun to play today? More impactful for it's time? Or just your personal favorite? I'd say I favor the NES over most of those systems, but if I could just have one to play today, I'd be picking the GCN or DS over the NES any day.
I can only assume this list was written by someone under the age of 20. The ignorance of youth is the only reason I can think of that might excuse this blatant level of idiocy.
No matter how crappy the screen is, I will always put the OG Game Boy as number one... at least in my heart. Love that brick!
I find the concept of ranking consoles with different approach and technical limitations to be strange and somewhat stupid, but seen how many comments and interactions you got on this article, I guess you made the right choice publishing it, NL.
KA-CHING!
***Wii U is the Wii's successor not predecessor
I agree with about half of the list. The DS should be higher. The Wii U should lower. I bought it day one and I enjoyed the games but the actual hardware wasn't leveraged well. Pikmin 3 and Nintendoland are the only games that really used the second screen in a fun way.
@roadrunner343
A combination of all of those factors. It gets major brownie points for hot only starting it all, but kicking off huge franchises, like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania, etc. But beyond that, I have never encountered a console or the games that are on it, that are so easy to just sit down and jump in and play. The original SMB might be the most replayable game in history.
@Schneiderbear You could still run the entire Wii VC library through the Wii U's Wii mode though. Sure, "only" through HDMI, but I prefer that anyway so...
So many factors but this list is pitchfork ready because it is total crap. As so have mentioned those of us who actually lived thru all these systems may see it differently. Its trying to be so sheik placing market failures above mega sucesses. So here is a list from a guy who owned all of these systems but the hazardous VGB.
1. Switch. Its a culture phenom and Nintendo’s best hardware design hands down. Its library is alreayd incredible and those that say its too soon..... Look whats already out and announced. Switch will end up with the best Nintendo, 3rd party and Indy library of any aN system when all is said and done. Last point N needed Switch to be a sucess so badly and it was/is.
2. 3DS - 75mil and counting 8yrs old and still supported has had multiple meaningful refinements, plus DS BC
3. DS 100mil units, great library, long life, GBA/GB BC.
4. SNES - The pinnacle of 2D gaming, 16bit era was compeditive but SNES was the best. Iconic library and comtroller.
5. Wii - 100mill units. It had a huge library of so much crapware but easily has over 100+ good to great games and VC and GC BC.
6. GBA SP.....how many of you really experienced handheld gaming before backlighting? It really sucked. SP clamshell design and BL were major innovations and then the GBA library and GB BC
7. NES.......it saved video gaming and launched many iconic franchises but honestly the best gaming of the 8bit era was on the C64.
8. NGC...We all loved it more after it was dead. It has maybe the best top 50 of any system ever. One major reason its viewed so well now is its best games have aged incredibly, far better than ps2. It was very under appreciated during its era.
9/10. GB/GBC......The sold like mad and had great games but ppl.... no backlights...it really was a different far worse deal.
11. WiiU.....mich of its design is funky or clunky and they marketed it like. It was doomed to fail even though it had an impressive exclusive and solid indy library. Honestly modded the WiiU becomes way better as you can play any GC or Wii game on the gamepad. Nintendo could have offere this on day 1 yet never saw the sense.
12. N64.......It sucked more than people give it credit for. Carts were expensive and small MB, that controller sure it had analogue but the design was a mess. 3 iconic games mad it a must own but everything great was N and Rare.
13. VGB...I actually saw and played one as a kid at Miejers. They were pretty rare as they were pulled fast and apparently debilitating. If N made a VR headset Switch would they dare call it VRBoy?
@HawkeyeWii I don't have any issues with that approach, and these rankings are just for fun anyway, but I do think that's what leads to most of the fanboy flame wars in the comments. People mean different things when they say the best. It's why on the list I personally created (Based on what I most enjoy play today) NES was quite low. But if we're talking about my favorites, NES is easily top 5. Probably top 3. So there's a pretty huge discrepancy there, but I don't think it's absolutely egregious to rank the NES fairly low, depending on the criteria. Which is why I take issue with the approach of "Everyone vote, we'll mash it together into an article" because the staffers also all likely had their own, differing criteria for ranking them as well.
@WaveBoy
Thanks man....I can’t believe I took the tme to type it. Lets say NES and c64 were great compliments. In general 8bit computers had more complex games while NES was more action/arcade. You had games like Bards Tale, Pool of Radiance, Ultima (best early rpgs), The SidM games like Pirates, simcity and combat flight sims, great action games like Impossible Mission and the early MG and Wolfenstien games.
My GF at the time had the Nes and loved Zelda. I would go over just to watch her play (watch her lol). I saw the whole game before playing it myself. My favs were Metriod and Hogan's Alley which I dropped a ton of quarters in at the aracde before it came home. It says a lot about N’s suceess that the NES is arguably not in the top 5 of 13.
Unrelated but funny.....My old HS GF was named Dawn and we would often fall out playing games on her livimg room floor and her Dad would come out pre-dawn heading for work and kinda nudge me in the ribs with his boot and tell me it was time to go home. I used to tease her and tell her ‘Your dad has a strage way of getting me up at the crack of Dawn’.
What.
www.nintendolife.com says
Hmm, is that it. Can you think of something more to say?
No.
I'm going to judge my list by the amount of fun I've had with the games/systems.
1. N64
2. Wii
3. Wii U (although I'd rate most Nintendo franchises as better than their Wii counterparts)
4. Switch (will likely go higher)
5. 3DS
6. DS
7. GCN
8. NES
9. SNES
All the rest are irrelevant to me.
@Retsam I've been playing games since the 80s. But I was a purely PC & handheld gamer until the early 2000. My first console was the GameCube.
Also I have Chrono Trigger on my DS, iPhone. And played newer Secret of Mana games. I also have a NES and SNES classic, but I do feel both systems being somewhat nostalgic, but not better than newer systems.
And it's like I said, I actually do love most NES and SNES and N64 games. Only the question was which I would love the most. And then I must say the newer systems.
@MakeMyBiscuit said "The last 5 and the Virtual Boy I can live with but how did the Wii U score higher than the original Wii???"
Very simple :
The Wii in totally include inside the Wii U... Basically a Wii U is a Wii U + a Wii... that's why... ^^
So much of this depends on one’s age and what game genres you’re into. And most people have a bias towards portability or home console. That said, my list is not factoring in any VC games or backwards compatibility, but rather, exclusive titles and contemporary 3rd party titles; the sheer amount of time that I enjoyed and had fun with a system’s library, the start and/or growth of quality franchises, and simply the amount of excellent games:
1.NES
2.Switch
3.SNES
4.N64
5.Wii
6.Wii U
7.Gameboy
8.Gamecube
9.3DS
10.DS
I can't say whether I agree or not, I see the argumentation and understand it. To me, Game Boy is what brought me my first really memorable moments of video games (Link's Awakening, Dragon Heart,...), then GBC (Perfect Dark, Alone in the Dark, Cannon Fodder...) and GBA (Golden Sun, Boktai,...). It wasn't until much later that I even had a TV, which I got just to hook up a Gamecube for Windwaker, Resident Evil, and lots of other great games.
Every new Nintendo was my favourite at that time. So either I'm doing something wrong, or Nintendo is doing something right. There's always a very varied, very unique selection of games, with the guarantee of quality first party games and interesting third party exclusives. I always got the new Playstation about halfway their lifespan, but obvious great game libraries aside (as a horror fan for example), especially on PS2 and 3, none of them ever appealed to me as a system, not for functionality nor for design, and I dislike the controllers.
@Schneiderbear
I have one on my Wii U pluged in a Sony PVM with RGB SCART cable.
So yes you can play on a CRT with a Wii U.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLmIhOg6Og8
PS : it runs great and if you really want 240p output you can get that by modding the Wii U. ^^
literally the most ridiculous ranking ever.
@Cobalt I run my switch on a CRT.
@Realnoize VR is a niche and the games for it are specialized, but I wouldn't call it "ill-fated" myself. It works well enough and it being on smartphones makes it affordable, if not as great as we expected from sci-fi movies.
I would rather go to a VR parlor once in a while than own a pair of goggles though.
@YANDMAN
Excuse me ?
10. Wii
9. GB Advance (SP)
8. GB Color
7. 3DS
6. Gamecube
5. Snes
4. N64
3. Gameboy
2. NES
1. Switch
The fact that not a single day has past since the inception of the Switch where I have not played at least a quick game of something - earns it's first place despite being new and fresh still.
The main article seems bizarre and almost contradictory towards the Gamecube throughout - either that or I'm reading it all wrong somehow...
Who's idea was this article?
The Virtual Boy is an easy target, and while certain criticisms are justified, I find there's always at least one or two of them that are misinformed.
The Virtual Boy's catalog was not "largely poor." Mario Tennis, Mario Clash, Wario Land, Red Alarm, Teleroboxer, Panic Bomber, and Jack Bros are all worth playing. Considering only 14 games were actually released for the platform, that's half of its library. I can't think of any other gaming device that can claim the same statistic.
Also, eyestrain is a legitimate criticism of the console but claiming it causes brain damage is misleading. Furthermore, the problem wouldn't be limited to the Virtual Boy. It'd apply to any immersive headset, including modern VR sets.
We honestly do not know what the long-term effects of virtual reality are. We suspect they're not good. There was a 2014 study that showed rats exhibiting reduced neural activity while exposed to VR. We have no idea how this translates to humans or what degree of exposure is required before there is irreversible damage.
I also recall reading articles stating that 3D films and games can be detrimental to a child's developing vision. Again though, this is not something solely attributable to the Virtual Boy. The 3DS would be just as culpable.
The opinion of a 31 year old American: I disagree. Here's my list:
1. Switch-bought day one, goes everywhere with me.
2. NES-grew up with this and the two dozen games my father bought from pawnshops over the years in the early 90s.
3. SNES-got a couple years after launch.
4. N64-got a year after launch.
5. Gamecube-launchday, yay Rogue Squadron II
6. Wii-got several years after launch.
7. Wii U-got a couple years after launch
8. 3DS-got a couple years after launch
9. Gameboy-got with the Super gameboy several years after launch.
The others are never owned and refuse to rank. I also own every classic game compilation for Switch so far and despite some games coming out before I was born, have an interest in old Atari and Arcade games. My family has always been behind the curve on consoles. The only systems we bought on launch day were the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and now Switch for me on my own. (I also picked up the NES and SNES classic as well as the Atari Flashback 8 Gold HD day one, but they weren't hundreds of dollars either) a friend hacked my Xbox in the early 2000s with all the NES, SNES, and Genesis games and I was able to experience all the games my parents were unable to afford in the early 90s. I bought several on 3DS virtual console because I love having them on the go and support Nintendo whenever I can or as I call them: the number 1 purveyors of fun in this current depressing world we live in.
Interesting read, but couldn't disagree more personally! My list would be:
1. SNES
2. Game Boy
3. NDS
4. N64
5. NES
6. Switch
7. 3DS
8. GBA
9. Gamecube
10. Wii
11. Game Boy Colour
12. Wii U
13. Virtual Boy
The Wii should be number 3 behind SNES and Switch.
The GC and Wii U should be at the bottom of the barrel just ahead of the Virtual Boy.
The Wii is too high at 8th. I enjoyed mine at the time, but looking back its library didn't have much going for it compared to other Nintendo consoles. The Galaxy games were classics, and it had a few other under-rated gems like Wario Land Shake and DKC Returns, but other than those... The worst Metroid and Zelda games (Other M and Skyward Sword), arguably the worst Mario Kart... In hindsight, the Wii was not great.
This is a good list. I’ve owned every console on the list except for the Game Boy Color, and I mostly agree with it. I think the Nintendo 64 is probably too high, but otherwise I wholeheartedly agree. Especially the Switch at #1. Even only two years in, if I had to cut back to only one console, it would be the Switch, hands down.
@Cobalt I run my switch on a CRT, just like i said before.
I disliked the N64 so I’m glad it didn’t break the top 3 lol.
@YANDMAN
Excuse me, just like i said before. ^^
@Incognito_D Honestly feel the Wii was the last great home console. Thought the PS2 would be but looking back there were so many under the radar games that no one played because they were too busy crying about shovelware and SD graphics.
Madworld, Trauma Center series, the best Monkey Ball, Shin and Punishment 2, Castle Shikigami 3, HOTD, Fragile Dreams, Tatsunoko Vs, No More Heroes 1 and 2, Last Story, Muramasa, Zack and Wiki, Punch-Out, Xenoblade, Rhythm Heaven, Wario Shake, Pandora's Tower, Sengoku Basara, Domino Rally, Let's Tap, ExciteBots, Sonic Colors, Monster Hunter Tri, Red Steel 2, only console ports of Gunblade NY and LA Machineguns, Blast Works, Elebits, Boom Blox, both Marble Sagas, Opoona, Little King's Story, Escape from Bug Island, probably the best Tenchu ever made, NiGHTS 2, The Calling, Klonoa... Japan only stuff like Night of the Sacrifice and Fatal Frame not to mention some legit awesome WiiWare like Muscle March and You Me and the Cubes.
Off the top of my head, I'm forgetting a lot of games. Wii had more good exclusives than its contemporaries and is, so far, better than Nintendo's current and last home system.
@SmaggTheSmug
I completely agree with you. In fact, I like to play with VR once in a while, especially at fairs and some tech expos and the like. I think, like you said, that it is a niche product. My point was merely aimed at those VR fanboys (we all know one or two) who'll argue to no end about VR being what everyone is actually dreaming of. I was even told once that every "true" gamer out there now has already embarked on a VR platform (implying that anyone not into VR right now is not a true gamer). I mean... I haven't seen this level of irrational fanboyism since childish console wars of old...
Maybe "ill-fated" was a poor choice of words in the article. But I'm just surprised that it hasn't created some form of angry VR fanboy mob lashing at it on this page, given how vocal they can be.
You weren't kidding when talking pitchforks.

@Medic_alert I disagree, the gamecube third party support was not amazing imo, It has the games you listed and that's nice, but aside from those, many companies that were doing great games at the time on both PS2 and Xbox barely did anything on the cube like SNK, Eidos, Koei, Codemasters, Tecmo and especially Roackstar, also Konami aside from Twin Snakes barely did anything on the console, in fact that was the only M rated game they released on it and some companies that made gamecubes games at the beggining later just stop doing that like Midway, Acclaim, 2K Sports and Lucasarts. In my opinion the only big complanies that did support the GC a lot were Capcom, EA, Activision and Ubisoft, and still I would say they did support the other 2 consoles more, missing games like Burnout 3 and Revenge.
Also, PS2 had like a huge monopoly with japanese companies like Atlus, Nis, Square Enix (and more exclusives from Konami, SNK or Capcom than the other 2) and the Xbox had some exclusive PC ports of games like Kotor, Morrowind, Riddick Chronicles, Doom 3 or Half Life 2, while the Gamecube didn't have anything exclusive to go agains that.
@Cobalt What is your confusion?
Everybody knows this is just a bit of fun, don’t they?
Just checking.
FWIW based on my own entirely personal subjective preference I would shuffle the Wii U down below Gameboy, GBA, DS and maybe even the Wii based on how much use I got out of the systems when they were out. Apart from that I agree with the top 2.
@Realnoize The "true gamer" comments sounds ironic, considering VR games are mostly super simple or casual experiences, some with hardly any gameplay. Unless they mean you need to be hardcore to survive VR Chat with sanity intact
I bought a WiiU at launch. In the end not long after Mario Kart appeared, which by then I didn't even buy it, I was over it and sold it months later. It is the first time since I got into Nintendo in 1985 (or for that matter any system) I ever sold one off in its life span out of total disgust. Nintendo lied, and we wasted money on it. They were given a chance to get games that generation, but when third parties gave them specs they needed, they effectively told them to F-off and made their bloated tablet boat anchor that ate up so much resources the system barely could tick along effectively at HD. While it looked nice, the stupid system, ended up having a programming language nastier to work than the Saturn. The system was thrown under the bus before it even arrived, with buggy ports, some 1-3 years old, a lot of false promises, and even companies intentionally sand bagging it (EA ME3 on WiiU, same time for $20 less, Trilogy for the others.) It was born in the coffin, and the nails were already being pounded in as it arrived. To anyone willing to delude themselves into thinking that piece of garbage was great are fools. IT has a few great games, and now most of them are on the Switch or 3DS. People who cling to it like some amazing system, including that trashy article, are trolls or fools looking to get attention. End of story.
weird order. Why is the Wii U so high up the list? Should have been straight after the Virtua Boy!
@LukeLand That's exactly how I feel. I never really cared for the N64. So much brown and green.
@YANDMAN
What's yours ?
Hmm, interesting. Here's my list.
1. Wii
2. 3DS
3. Switch
4. Game Boy Advance
5. GameCube
6. Super Nintendo
7. Wii U
8. Game Boy
9. NES
10. Game Boy Color
11. 64
12. DS
13. Virtual Boy
@Oscarzxn The GameCube still had a lot better third party support than the N64 or Wii U and in some ways better than the Wii.
For example, it's the most recent time we've received a mainline Soul Calibur game on a Nintendo system. It's also the exclusive home of the awesome second and third installments in the "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" trilogy.
@jjmesa16 gold and silver could be played on an original gameboy, Crystal was a Color only game though.
The Wii-U should be somewhere with the Virtua Boy, certainly not above gameboy..
Does anyone else agree that the DS library is really overrated and terribly undiverse? At least 90% of its library consists of nothing more than RPGs, puzzle games, casual games, games with mediocre experimental control schemes, and inferior console ports.
I suppose that's great if you love those particular genres, but the system has hardly anything in terms of quality action and/or adventure games, fighting games, beat 'em ups, platformers, shooters (of all kinds), sports games, etc. Yes, I know it has gems like "New Super Mario Bros.," "Mario Kart DS," and a couple of "Legend of Zelda" games, but those are among the very rare exceptions.
@BulbasaurusRex Go play Tokyo Beat Down, Bangai-O and Space Invaders Extreme and get back to me.
I am a Life Long avid gamer. Playing since 1988 when I was 5 and I am now 35. I played most of the systems and their games extensively. I rank as follows. 1.SNES 2.NES 3.Switch 4.Game Cube 5. N64 ———The rest I’m not interested in personally. I see them as second tier————————-Remember everyone, without the NES, none of the others would exist. Also there are many awesome NES games that are third party. Battletoads, Power Blade, Batman from Sunsoft and about 100 more. All of these 5 systems are excellent in their own way. Nintendo is still awesome after over three decades! Enjoy everyone and Merry Christmas. / Happy Holidays. -Patrick P
@Cobalt Undersea Pyramids.
@PatrickMarioMan
First, I think it's weird that you segregate out GBC, but decidedly didn't do the same with DSi & New 3DS. Both of these systems had the same basic concept that the GBC did... let's take the old system and give it some new features. DSi I would rate worse than GBC, I think it only had a couple of exclusives and I can't even remember what they were, at least GBC did the turning games into color bit (and though there may have only been a few exclusives, which were amazing, the GBC did actually go back and have a few dozen classic games that ran in better color than normal color emulation allowed).
Second, while it seems very likely that the Switch will be remembered as a better system than the SNES, I feel like it is too recent to make that judgement. Hell, we've only seen 1.5 years of it, it could fall off a cliff after today (doubtful but it could). I think it is the first console that can realistically challenge SNES, but it isn't there yet. The SNES was soooo goood. Looking back on the catalog, it is a joke that there was actually a SNES vs Genesis debate, the Gen had some decent games, but it was nothing compared to the SNES.
I tend to agree with the rest... the middle was jumbled up a bit... NES was a bit low, I agree it hasn't aged well but the games are still classics and totally playable (unlike the atari which is completely unplayable) (well for the most part).
Also N64 hasn't aged as well as its contemporaries? I actually think it has aged far better than the PSX. I view PSX games largely as unplayable, the 3D is so bad, I'd rather go back and play NES games. N64, because it was the more powerful system, is a much more playable beast. It surely has jankiness sometimes but it does better than its contemporaries.
@Oscarzxn GCN had some great exclusives like PN03, Gotcha Force, and Eternal Darkness, Baten Kaitos, Cubivore etc. PS2 owned that gen though and it wasn't close - Xbox is genuinely laughable if you had a decent PC at the time.
This is actually pretty accurate, but the Switch is not top. SNES, GCN and N64 are definitely the best three though

Re:Virtual Boy:
"It also didn't help that players experienced dizziness, nausea, and headaches even during short playing sessions and scientists later concluded that the Virtual Boy could cause permanent brain damage. Wowzers!"
Source, please? I couldn't find anything via Google search.
oh dear, this is going to be a mess
I like this list. I would put a lot of them in a different order, but your reasoning is sound. With one exception: the Wii U is placed too high. Yes it had a good first party lineup, but that is true of all Nintendo consoles and it had a lot of shortcomings that the others did not. Other than that, good list.
"In fact, the only truly notable exclusives were Pokémon Crystal and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons. That's pretty poor for a console that lasted five years and demonstrates just how much it relied on that epic Game Boy back catalogue."
You're kidding right? There were loads of GBC games released for the system, including the also well liked Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, Zelda: LA, SMB: Deluxe, Pokemon Gold and Silver/Pokemon Yellow (big deal even before Crystal was released), and several other 3rd party games like R-Type. Oh yeah and Shantae..
That's pretty poor for an editor, who should know basic stuff like this when writhing those guides. Surprised no one mentioned this. Oh well, I guess its normal for a video games editor.
@YANDMAN
Undersea pyramids confuse you ?
From my perspective, it's more about the kind of undersea roads the mummies liked living on...
Apparently it was all about dead ends... but that's not scientifically proven yet
@gutsack The latter two are among the rare exceptions, but the former received mostly mediocre reviews.
@NybroCymerej Those games were still playable (without color) on a regular Game Boy, so they don't count as GBC exclusives.
@Razakius Hmm, you make a good point about the GBC being comparable to the DSi and New 3DS. The revisions all added notable new features including a small CPU upgrade, and each has a small number of exclusive titles that were able to take advantage of that extra horsepower. Including all three of them would be excessive, so I propose that the Game Boy Color be dropped from the list.
@BulbasaurusRex which yeah.. I think people think of gbc as it's own console because it lasted a long time, but it really was gb 1.75 (gb lite is 1.5).
@NintendoFan4Lyf I'm with you on that one. I also wonder how the Nintendo 64 would have fared if they used CD's instead of cartridges.
My picks are switch, gamecube, n64, Wii u and snes
Handheld picks are ds & game boy advance
Same as my top 5, only a different order. I ignore the Virtual Boy as I personally never tried it so why should I trust the opinion of others? I bracket the Gameboy and Gameboy Color as one.
Switch
Gamecube

3DS
N64

Wii
WU
Wii and WU were the only systems I never owned. Both sucked the big one!
PS: "Nintendo followed up the ridiculous success of the Wii with the Wii U, its ill-fated predecessor."
1) WU was the successor.
2) How can an ill-fated system rank higher than a ridiculously successful one? I think someone's been sniffing too many crusty old gamepads.
Before reading this list, I made my own list to see how they would match up, and surprisingly mine was almost exactly the same, with the only differences being that the Wii and N64 are swapped. I think the N64, despite having some masterpieces under its belt, also represents the point where third parties abandoned ship. It has a small library compared to most of the other consoles and only has maybe 5 or 6 good third party games. The Wii meanwhile I think gets more flak than it deserves. It's library was larger than people give it credit for and it had its own masterpieces in Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade and Metroid Prime Trilogy.
I just noticed this, but its an absolute travesty that Xenoblade X wasn't mentioned in the Wii U exclusives despite never being ported and thus being the #1 reason to still have a Wii U.
1. Wii U
2. SNES
3. Wii
4. 3DS
5. N64
6. Switch
The Wii U is top for me because it encompasses most of Nintendo's library with its backwards compatibility and VC. I always wanted one of the Nintendo store demo units that had a bunch of games on it and the Wii U was all that and more.
@Cobalt I just don't understand why they built Pyramids under the sea. Unless they had previously created some fairly advanced breathing apparatus they would of been little use and difficult to build.
Lol: Did anyone else expect Switch NOT to be on place 1 on this very site.
Of course I don't agree! It may have a gigantic amount of download-titles, and many of them are good. But its certainly lacking in strong, new third-party retail titles. Its even lacking in strong, new first-party titles (so far), and overall there's far to much wrong with the system. Do I enjoy the system: yes. Is it the best: absolutely NOT!!
I think my favorite is still the n64, but I also love my Gamecube, snes, 3ds and Wii.
N64 by a mile for me. Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Goldeneye, the two Banjo games, Conker’s, Bad Fur Day, Paper Mario, the list goes on. Nothing else comes close to those games for me.
I’m not a fan of the way Nintendo has gone at all recently. It started with the Wii, but that had plenty of good games too. The Wii U era was just depressing for me. I loved 3D World, Splatoon and Bayonetta 2, could appreciate DK Tropical Freeze despite not being a 2D platform fan, but there was little else. I’ve never enjoyed Smash and haven’t enjoyed Mario Kart since the DS. It was made worse by them putting out terrible, low budget games for the second half of the systems life to give the illusion of continued support. I’m still not over the fact they probably killed off Star Fox as a series.
Now the Switch has two of my favourite games of all time in Odyssey and BOTW, and I like Rabbids Kingdom Battle a lot, but that’s literally it for now. There’s been nothing this year that’s captured my interest in the slightest. At least there’s plenty to look forward to. Prime 4, Fire Embelm, Bayonetta 3 and a proper Pokemon.
Any list that has the new thing as #1 is obviously not serious
Sorry but not sorry
Is this judging based on its original impact, how it stands right now or how the console functions compared to the rest?
I would have put the Game Boy Color above the Game Boy, because of its backwards compatibility. I would have put SNES lower on the list but that may be due to the fact I never owned that system
@FoxyGlen
And I still have nothing positive to say.
@zool Not sure if it's a case of Nintendo "giving up on it" with the 3DS or just more the way the portable market has changed. It's pretty tough to sell parents on a dedicated handheld console these days with $30 -$40 games when they can get their kids an iPad (or android tablet) and load them up with a bunch of free and $1 games. Plus they're multipurpose devices - including educational purposes. Same thing really with Sony and the Vita compared to the PSP before it - even though I'd say Sony definitely abandoned the Vita far more so than Nintendo did the 3DS. But these days with modern "smart devices" like our phones and tablets, the concept of bringing along an extra dedicated handheld gaming device is just antiquated unfortunately. I personally HATE mobile gaming and subsequently touch-screen controls, but the writing has been on the wall for dedicated hand-held systems for 5 years or more now. The reason the Switch is bucking the trend and so successful thus far is the "gadget/neato factor" due to the hybrid home console/portable hybrid.
@SleeplessKnight I see where you are coming from but, 50% of Switch owners only play on the portable screen and the 3ds is the only 3d gaming system available. The 3ds biggest competition is the Switch.
But the Switch does not display in 3d. The 3ds needs updating and more 3d games should be available. That is up to Nintendo and so far is seems like they have abandoned the 3ds, or at least put it on the back burner.
With a bit of luck they will release a Switch mini that takes Switch cards but does not connect to a TV, but does display some games in 3d.
WII U above Wii i'm sharpening my pitchfork as we speak lol. But yes switch is really good.
Here's my pitchfork:
So let me get this straight you put a console that damaged Nintendo’s reputation beyond repair meaning they can no longer compete in the main console arena at number 4 it has to lose points for that alone. Switch shouldn’t count till it’s discontinued as we don’t know what else it has to offer. Nes should have been in the Top 3 well above the Wii which is Nintendo’s worst home console as it was more of a niche product aimed at the casual markets which smartphones/tablets eventually took from it forcing it to be discontinued long before other 7th gen systems.
The original Gameboy will always be one of my all time favorite systems, I still have one and lots of games. The switch is great but will I still have one in 30 years time...
@jjmesa16
Actually Pokemon Crystal is the only one of the three titles you mentioned that cant be used with original Gameboy.
The Reason I know this is because I own almost all the Nintendo systems and I have those specific cartridges.
Backwards compatibility was always The Nintendo Forte.
I hope it always is like that.
Wii U: "The second problem was the GamePad, which was just lacklustre in every way imaginable." Except during the four years when it was on the market, when we were claiming it to be the greatest, most innovative controller of all time...
@Cobalt But the orginal Wii is a Wii plus a Gamecube with cheap access to 480P gaming not to mention the Wii's high sales numbers and impact on gaming.
@MakeMyBiscuit
You're right on that but you forget something REALLY important :
The video signal of the Wii is just terrible compare to the one of the gamecube.
Please take a look ^^ :
My personal list
1) Wii U (by default vs Wii due to backwards compatibility. Homebrew, emulation, media apps, and other features are taken into account for Wii and Wii U)
2) Wii (highest selling Nintendo home console, bringing the company back into the hearts and minds of the populace. Say what you will but until Switch came along, this is the height of Nintendo popularity since the SNES)
3) NES (single handedly saved the gaming industrsy back in the 80's)
4)3DS-New 3DS (same as Wii U)
5) Nintendo DS-DSi (best damn portable ever. It dared to take risks, creating new forms of play and allowing more people to game. So glad Nintendo killed the "Game Boy" name!)
6) Switch
7) GameCube
8) N64
9) SNES
10) GameBoy-Color
11) GameBoy Advanced (gonna have to break my rule with this one. Sure, it's backwards compatible but compared to GameBoy, most of it's games were forgettable.)
12) Virtual Boy
@Cobalt I did not know that. I do know the games look good on my HDTV via component cables and because of this I still rank the Wii higher than the Wii U.
@MakeMyBiscuit
This is normal...
When you look at your games on your screen, you don't have a direct comparison with a gamecube connected at the same time side by side.
@Cobalt That is pretty impressive. Thanks for the info. I was toying with the idea of using my last HDMI slot on my TV for a Gamecube with a Gameboy Player via third party Gamecube to HDMI cable. I love the idea of playing Gameboy games on the big screen but in the end I am going to save it for the Nintendo Switch. I already have a Wii backwards compatible with the Gamecube and the Switch is getting some good Wii U ports as well as original Switch games.
@wazlon @NintendoFan4Lyf The mini-DVD problem could easily be fixed by splitting the game into multiple discs. Third-parties didn't have a problem with that on the PS1 before, and they didn't have a problem with that with the Xbox 360 after.
The Xbox used DVD's, but still got demolished by the PS2 in sales.
I think Nintendo Life is correct with why the GameCube failed.
@wizzgamer The Wii was niche? Did you really just say that? Please use your head next time.
@datamonkey what's wrong with the Wii U being at #6?
@Wavey84 you sound ridiculous yourself
The NES is NOT Nintendo's first forray to home consoles. Nintendo's been in the console market since 1977, 6 years before the NES
@nomither6 Wow, look in the mirror bud. Definitely seems like you are being the edgy one here. Calling someone else edgy while being edgy yourself makes you a hypocrite.
I sincerely hope that you are not an adult, for your own sake. Your comment was extremely sad on many levels.
@Hoho oh. . .oh, you poor, poor soul. . .
Much has changed in 6 years.
@HawkeyeWii 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That is the single most far fetched comment I've EVER seen on this website or even YouTube. You have heavy, HEAVY nostalgia bias.
@Hoho also, looking at the date this comment was made, how did you not consider Odyssey and Smash Ultimate significant? Odyssey was a solid return to to the sandbox format, and it's honestly better than 64 and Sunshine, and Ultimate is EASILY the best Smash game.
After having discovered this article almost 6 years later, I've decided to share my opinion before this inevitably gets reposted with the reveal of the next console. I rate consoles solely on their libraries; graphics and gimmicks do play into this, but the games themselves take center stage. I'll also mention that I mostly leave 3rd party to Xbox. With that said:
12. Virtual Boy. Expecting something else?
11. Wii U. Every Wii U game that was actually worth a look received either a superior port or a superior sequel.
10. NES. When it comes to gaming history, I give credit where credit is due, but historical significance does not equal best library. I genuinely believe the NES overall has aged worse than the N64. My pick for the best NES game, Kirbys Adventure, is still a low 8/10 in my book.
9. GCN. My problem with this console is two-fold. First, it feels like every single 1st/2nd party offering except Metroid Prime 1 didn't do enough. Even the original TTYD has issues with backtracking. Second, this console is missing several key entries: 2D Mario, DKC, top down Zelda (FSA doesn't count), 2D Metroid, mainline Kirby, even smaller time killer titles akin to Brain Age or Wii Sports. That, and Twilight Princess (which I consider a GCN game) sucks.
8. SNES. Am I the only one that feels like every big SNES game, save Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and Earthbound, has been outclassed almost entirely by future entries? Even then, I still don't see these games as the pinnacles of their respective franchises. . .save Earthbound, of course, but my RPG heart belongs with Mario and Luigi. I respect the significance, and this list is at a point where I do still really like these games; it's just that I like other games more.
7. N64. Has this console aged well? No. Is it still fun, if only for the novelty? Oh, yeah.
6. GB/GBC. Links Awakening and DK94 carry this library hard. Also, I'm a sucker for handhelds.
5. GBA. Home to several definitive remakes, as well as solid titles of its own. No complaints here.
4. 3DS. The dual screen will always be the best gimmick in my eyes, and while the 3DS didn't use it as much as it's predecessor, it still produced several fantastic titles.
3. Wii. Galaxy games. Nuff said. Oh, also Skyward, Return to Dreamland, MP3, Sports Resort,. . .
2. DS. I can only think of two 1st/2nd party offerings on this system that were actually bad. I love the dual screen mechanic and the charming display, and always will.
1. Switch. When this article released, I would've disagreed with the #1 spot most definitely. The Switch's first two years weren't bad, but didn't have enough. My, how that has changed since then. Almost everything theyve put on the Switch ranges from good to amazing, and I can't wait to see where they go from here.
@batmanbud2 Odyssey is great….if you like baby games, by that I mean, incredibly easy (& if you like wooing the same lady goomba over & over). but since I require some kind of difficulty balancing in my games, & don’t like rehashing of content, I’d say Odyssey is among the worst of any Major Mario Game. Speaking of rehashed, that perfectly describes Ultimate; add in the fact that the single player modes are the worst in the series, & that it’s uglier than every smash aside from 64, at the end of the day, not a fan. Obviously, I can’t argue with the quantity of content in Ultimate, but it’s stuff I’ve already seen, in games I already own & still play, which makes Ultimate have less identity.
@Hoho I've never prioritized difficulty in my games. My #4 game of all time is Kirby Planet Robobot, the overall 2nd easiest mainline Kirby behind Star Allies. Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who played and loved Tropical Freeze.
And while Odyssey isn't perfect, it's FAR from being the worst Mario, or even the worst 3D Mario. Sunshine had way more crap and overall felt the least Mario out of all of them (even than, it's still a 6/10 imo).
As for Smash, I've honestly fallen off the series outside of listening to its music. Playing Subspace Emissary and realizing it was just Return to Dreamland 0.5 (despite still being solid) has made me realize that Smash was never that great at single player and new ideas, and Ultimate being the culmination of every previous game, plus its new content, was for the best.
And Melee is the worst looking Smash game. It reeks of early GameCube.
@batmanbud2 you may have never have prioritized difficulty, but here’s a fun truism: you can always get better at a thing, but to be actively worse requires injury of the body or brain, or deprivation of food or sleep. Therefore, an easy experience will degrade significantly faster than a difficult one. Additionally, harder experiences are typically more mechanically & design-wise complex than an easy experience. For example: Mario Sunshine, a lot of different movement options & a lot of instances where you are required to be proficient. Might sound frustrating to someone whose primary point of reference appears to be the Kirby franchise (or so it seems), but it often makes the most thrown together parts of Sunshine more engaging on a gameplay level than the marquee moments of Odyssey, with the jump up super Star section & the final bowser section really standing out as vapid in their game design. As for you disliking melee’s graphics…Anyway, some people, maybe even most go for low barrier of entry titles, with low gameplay arcs: instant fleeting gratification, I & a handful of others, appreciate some co-authorship with the designers, & like to develop our skills in trajectory with a mid to high gameplay arc. Of course, Nintendo noticed the amount of players who gravitated towards instant gratification design, & widened the trend with the few new switch games they bothered to release, & now their games are entirely w/o teeth. They didn’t even trust people to aim their throws in Pikmin 4. But back to my truism, you can always get better at games, but I require maiming or malnourishment to get worse.
Here’s Joseph Anderson
https://youtu.be/kYJx5xt2cB0?si=2Q25Maaopmd3f_Ss
P.S. Tropical Freeze is reasonably difficult, but it’s not exactly brag worthy.
@batmanbud2 I apologize for the p.s, it was a touch churlish & neither here nor there 🫤.
