Update []:
Sonic X Shadow Generations has now reportedly sold 1.5 million units worldwide across all platforms (thanks, GoNintendo).
The game made its debut on 25th October 2024 (so roughly a month ago) and was awarded an "excellent" nine out of ten stars here on Nintendo Life. Here's what we had to say about the Switch release:
"In what can only be described as a monumental return to form for both hedgehogs, Sonic X Shadow Generations combines two excellent campaigns to create what is likely the very best 3D Sonic game so far. The remastered Generations content remains a delight, taking you through some of the series' most iconic stages, but Shadow's new chapter represents the franchise's 3D gameplay at its very best"

Original Story:

Sega this week released Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Switch and multiple other platforms. It's a remaster of the 2011 title Sonic Generations and includes a brand new campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog.
It seems the game has got off to a solid start with Sega revealing it's surpassed one million sales in its opening weekend:
"SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS has already surpassed 1 Million copies sold! Thank you all for your continued and endless support."
This appears to be a good sign for the blue blur (and the ultimate lifeform) considering one part of this title is based on an existing release.
If you have picked up Sonic X Shadow in its opening weekend, Sega has also issued a reminder about the free 'Sonic Jam Legacy Skin' for Classic Sonic. You can receive this item when you subscribe to the company's newsletter before 1st November 2024.
Sega will also be releasing a special level for Sonic X Shadow Generations Digital Deluxe owners later this year on 12th December 2024. It's inspired by the new movie live-action movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and will feature the voice of Keanu Reeves, who voices Shadow in the film.
Did you contribute to Sonic X Shadow Generations' sales success in its opening weekend? How are you finding it so far? Let us know.

I picked it up earlier today, and although I haven't played much, I'm enjoying my time with it so far. I'm honestly impressed with how good it looks on Switch; this is a gorgeous game. I have a couple 30-minute videos up on my channel with no commentary, if anyone is curious about how it performs on Switch. As I understand it, the Switch version is just 30 FPS, but I haven't noticed any frame dips or anything. It's really smooth and very high fidelity. Really looking forward to digging further into it as someone who never grew up with the original.

This honestly deserves every bit of praise.
After the Sonic Colours Ultimate fluff it’s a relief Sonic Team took the reins of development on the Sonic Generations remaster in house.
Better yet (and I’ve said elsewhere) is that Shadow Generations is somehow the bigger game of the two in the package, and dare I say it… potentially better overall as well.
(Just need a Sonic Unleashed / Lost World Re-release next please Sonic Team) 🙏
Huh. This is nice news!
Is the extra episode exclusive to digital deluxe? Or is it later gonna be paid DLC?
Also, seconded to above. Sonic Unleashed needs to come to more modern platforms! I don't really care about Lost World after playing it once though. Difficulty was a bit unbalanced, instead of rising gradually, a few mechanics that weren't explained well, and just generally meh.
Unless 3ds version was different?
Love to hear it. This is a brilliant game that I am hugely enjoying. Sega/Sonic Team have put in quality work here and it should be reflected. As others have said, it runs so well on Switch.
Also, not a new feature, I assume, but I love that you can unlock different music tracks to use on any level. It can make playing the same level, or a variant of it, feel really different.
It will be interesting to see where the console divide lies too. Superstars seems to be doing best on Switch, and I wonder if this will be the same.
I am glad that I did pre-order, as I do like being able to play as 'Sonic Adventure' Sonic!
Um...
I still have the PS3 version Sonic Generation but I neglected the game because I thought the game was too hard for me to clear the upcoming stages with very high speed.
I keep getting game over all the time due to limited live supply and couldn't perform speedy tricks with perfect timing and I have no idea which direction to go when performing speed dash.
I tried to like that Sonic game but unfortunately the game doesn't work for me.
I still keep the game but looks like it will be the display only.
And when I look at the remaster version with Shadow on it, it gave me mixed feeling either I want to get the game just for display purpose or give it a second try but if still not working, I will not bothering that game again.
@Mariotag You can already buy a season pass on the eShop for around £11 with all the digital deluxe content included. I know this as I've done just that
Absolutely fantastic to hear. The game is phenomenal and just a blast to play through. Not all levels are hits (Urgh Planet Wisp and Radical Highway...) but otherwise it's one fantastic package. Favourite level remains Rooftop Run of course!
@Anti-Matter Actually, they got rid of the lives in this remaster, so no worries about game overs this time around! The later levels really do get annoying though, so I understand where you are coming from
@Maubari
Ow!
That's a huge difference.
Maybe it will make the gameplay way easier for newbie players.
Thanks for the information. 🙂
@Anti-Matter No problem! The levels are still pretty difficult though, I have to say - especially in the Shadow campaign; But it's still alot of fun too with ALOT of content; I already put in over 10 hours and I'm not done with the main stories yet haha Personally my third favourite game of 2024!
@Anti-Matter I agree that the difficulty with going too fast can make it quite tricky and frustrating at times. Thankfully, as you advance, you can also unlock power ups to customise Sonic with, such as starting levels with a shield, rings staying around for 30 seconds after you drop them, or the ability to halt really quickly. You can customise it to make things safer!
Someone please clarify: Sonic Generations ran 60fps and this newest revision runs 30fps on a system equal more so to PS3, is that right?
Definitely clever to remaster a Sonic and Shadow best of game, now that Sonic is popular again. It makes me happy to see, that it is successful.
It feels like a new platformer golden age is here or coming soon, which makes me even more happy.
About time Sonic Team had a hit. I had no idea this game was going to be at all good, because I’m definitely not a fan of the Sonic games, but I’m glad this is a good one for the fans.
Side note, would this be a good game to get me more into the series? I played Sonic 2 in 2022, but it I thought that it felt difficult and clunky.
I bought the game on Switch. Was going to go PS4 at least as I hear the Sonic Generations portion is 60fps there, but the portability of the Switch won out. It's still much improved from the PS3 version I had on original release and looks nice on the Switch even at 30fps.
You can tell those Shadow levels are really pushing the hardware though, as seem to run with a lower resolution. Still fun and playable, I may also buy on PS4 in the future.
For one reason or another I never got to play generations when it first released and I was interested in it. I won’t miss it this time. I’m glad this shadow campaign seems like a whole new game on its own and not an afterthought. This looks like a win for sega.
Sonic Generations was already a really good game but Shadow Generations takes that and cranks it way up. If this is what we're going to get going forward I can't wait.
I tried so many Sonic games and never enjoyed any of them. But this trailer looks really good and almost makes me want to try it one more time XD
And all those positive comments too 😍
Really, almost getting tempted !!
@Porky it ran at 30 FPS on both Xbox 360 and PS3
I’ll be jumping in sooner or later. Sonic Generations got me through some bumpy patches in my teenage years and I’m keen re-experience it.
@Porky another article on the site, that was posted in the last week or so, said that the og ran at 720 and this new one on switch runs at 1080. They also said frame rate on the og was 30, so technically the new version on switch should look better than the original. If I have time I'll try and find the article and post a link. But it was pretty recent
Good. Shadow Generations is peak. So happy that sonic team got this one so right.
@Mrkittyhead Yes. It really is a shining example of Sonic at his best in two very different 2d and 3d plains. It feels so tight and precise with the platforming. It feels less unfair with stupid things that you cannot predict being ahead, or just jank causing you to mistime a jump.
If you really really don't like Sonic, it won't change that, but this really does take so much that is good about Sonic and does great work with it.
best sonic game ever.
@Yalloo
same here, this one realy got me hooked back in 2011. it is just a great game
Okay Sega, so now fix the camera and remaster Sonic Heroes and Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.
I'm enjoying this game so much. Every level feels like an amusement park and the feeling of speed is so satisfying.
it's been GENERATIONS since I got a sonic game on switch, so I might get this one
I'm grateful they also have a Digital Deluxe Upgrade for Sonic Generations.
I almost forgot I had subscribed to the newsletter for my Sonic Jam skin, so I had to check my inbox and sure enough, I received my code 5 days ago.
Not planning to get the game soon (want to get it physical) but I'll bite one day for the Digital Deluxe Upgrade, and thanks to my downloaded skin I can access game updates without owning the game.
Still haven't received my code yet.
[Everyone liked that] We are so back!!!
its heartwarming to see people loving this game! It really is such a fun game, and i cant wait for my switch copy to get here so i can finally play it portably (November 4th cant come soon enough for me lol)
@Mrkittyhead this is why this game is perfect: its like a sample platter of everything the series has to offer! If you like the classic sonic gameplay the most, then i could suggest like origins, superstars, or mania (definitely mania). If you end up liking modern sonic the most, then i can point you towards colors or unleashed. And if you like shadow the most, I can point you towards frontiers, project 06, and the adventure titles! The game is just a great jumping-off point all in all!
@Mariotag The 3DS version of Lost World was different. Same story, same music and level themes, but the actual levels are completely different. And considerably worse. Frustrating, poorly designed and infuriating.
The snow level is the worst, where you have to push massive snowballs while dodging enemies through a level that lasts over 10 minutes.
@Maubari yeah, and you can still buy extra life for 500 tickets, which is so stupid. I can't believe the developers seeped on that.
On Series X, it's a bit less overwhelming since the old 360 version is playable since a long time and looks almost the same with the upgrade on Series X.
But still a great game.
And of course a great release for Nintendo onlys, who can enjoy it for the first time.
It's not a great year for the Switch, so Sonic should be one of the best releases there.
@Mariotag I highly doubt the Sonic 3 Movie level is exclusive to digital deluxe owners. They would be screwing over not just physical owners but also regular digital owners. Which combine is at least 50%-60% of their sales.
@Bizzyb it wont be exclusive i dont think
@Sonicka I would love re-releases of Sonic Unleashed and Lost World too but what I would really love to see is Sonic Heroes on one of the modern 'cause there have been multiple 3D Sonic games that have been made available on newer consoles or re-released or remastered since they came out but sadly 'Sonic Heroes' has been left behind and I loved that game and know a lot of other fans that did too when it came out.
What I think would be great is if they made a 3D Collection like Nintendo did for Mario with 'Sonic Adventure 1 and 2', 'Sonic Heroes' and 'Sonic Unleashed.' 😀
@DollyrotsFan1 Yeap I would totally get behind a Sonic Heroes remaster / remake as well.
As for a collection - you never know. SA1/2 have already been remastered into HD as you mentioned, so porting duties I’d assume wouldn’t be too much of a problem… leaving just Heroes to round out the package - so a Sonic Adventure Chronicles package doesn’t seem too out there as a possibility.
Perhaps this should be their next classic collection after Origins? (If they end up missing out the odd ducks of the Sonic 3D’s, Knuckles Chaotix, MD Spinball, Mean Bean Machine, Sonic the Fighters)
That said… an official GBA collection of the 5 sonic titles wouldn’t go amiss either.
…There’s plenty for them left to do here 🙂
Is it fair to say that this is the best 3D Sonic has ever been? I loved Adventure back in the day but it was rough. The only other 3D Sonic I've played was Colors on Wii , which I didn't like.
I'm surprised how great this game runs on the switch. They really did an amazing job.
I have to be honest, haven't had this much fun with a Sonic game in a while.
Highly recommend this game for those on the fence.
.
Amazing the praise! Looks like it's a hit. I didn't play Sonic Generations, but I'll keep this one on my radar. Side question: How do you pronounce the title? Sonic cross Shadow Generations? Sonic and Shadow Generations?
@Porky Only the 3DS version ran at 60fps, the PS3, Xbox 360, and current versions are all 30fps. The PC version of the game could be force to go 60fps but that makes the game unstable and stutter too much.
@OorWullie for me, colors has been a really slow burn. I really didnt care for it when i first played the remake when it released in 2020, but over time ive been warming up to it more. People aren't lying when they say the game is at its most engaging after youve beaten it and are looking to get all the red star rings
Great news, looking forward to playing this myself as soon as I have the time for it (already have it, just haven't started it yet)!
Good news, it would be cool if they added the levels from the 3DS version of Sonic Generations as paid DLC
@epicgamner Interesting. Maybe I'll give it another go in future.
I just want to play the Sonic part, so I think I will get the PlayStation 3 version instead. That version is also unchanged, which is nice. The only downside I know of is, that it runs at 30 fps.
Segway scooters also sold really well, even if I'd not be caught dead on one.
Love to hear that it keeps on selling well!
I now own the PS4 version in addition to the Switch. Sonic Generations is 60fps there and Shadow is 30fps but with better resolution than Switch. The Switch version is still really great in my opinion, it looks really nice on the OLED and the motion blur does help out with the 30fps.
It's $30 on the eShop now. Seems like a slap to the face for early adopters of the game who paid full price.
Only half million three weeks later? I'm curious about a sales update of Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth and Metaphor ReFantazio, because it seems like their games have strong sales the first week but then they quickly slow down, their games are usually 50% off in less than a year.
And already on sale (ps version at least). So is those good news.
Although astrobot’s sales are similar.
@abbyhitter that is the risk you get of buying games in October. They will be on sale for Black Friday deals the last two or three weeks of November.
That's great. I'm so happy to see Sonic doing great. Shadow is getting more popular as well, so that's double the goodness.
meh...new sonic games please.
Hopefully they learned their lesson about releasing alongside a new Mario game.
While it is, nice it is sort of unfortunate that one of Sonic's better games is just a re-release of game that was already good.
Sure there's extra content, but new Sonic games are still hit or miss if the Superstars and Frontiers are anything to go by.
@ShonenJump121 good thing the new content is still by Sonic Team and considered the highlight by critics and fans then huh?
@TeiGekiLord Sonic generations was already good. Even if the new content was only above average, the game would still be good because its Sonic generations.
I wish the series quality was more consistent like Mario rather than this rollercoaster of up and down quality.
I’ll never buy another Sonic game but I guess there is still a market
The original Generations sold 1.8 Million after the 2011 Holiday season. With Black Friday, Christmas, and the inevitable push this game will get after the movie, I could see this game comfortably surpassing that.
