Re: Arcade Archives Celebrates 500 Retro Releases With Special Commemorative Game

RoboCube

@shgamer For a series called arcade archives it would be nice if they included some history about each game instead just here's how to play it some of their releases have been amazing, and there are games have that "one more go" I won't lie but some of these releases like Space Invaders and other 70s games for this price is silly especially when capcom does it at 1/4 the price and honestly has a better presentation, even Atari has been doing a better job and more fair price, the dlc for the Namco arcade games,Atari ports is the same price as this one arcade archives release... lastly why the heck does Space Invaders and other 70's arcade games need a Switch 2 version? That isn't a free upgrade either... I know it's not the most powerful handheld in this age, but seriously? This isn't Zelda breath of the Wild it's a B&W 1970s arcade game...

'The Invaders... A Quinn Martin Production!' On no, that's a different one. I have the Space Invaders collection on Switch so suppose I am covered here, but a good one for them to commemorate in the excellent Arcade Archives series, I've bought quite a few and am sure more I'm interested in will be forthcoming. Great that Hamster do this and unusual titles like Kangeroo, which I played on the 2600 originally, are just not games you'd see rereleased anywhere else.

@PinderSchloss AI images are bad references tools for artists in the same way that Wikipedia is a bad source. Even if your brain tells you it 100% correct, you need to know how you know that. You need a photo to verify with more certainty that what you're looking at is based on reality.

Using photos from a newspaper as a reference (like your ju-jitsu example) has never been a significant ethical controversy. Tracing is only an ethical controversy when it's utilised to deceive others in a given context. How an AI figures out how to generate an image of a fighter, is an ongoing ethical controversy.

Re: "This Just Didn't Fit Into My Gaming Lifestyle" - Hideki Kamiya Isn't Happy About Switch 2's Lack Of A D-Pad

Yeah, I really wish the Joy-Cons had a proper D-pad. If Nintendo won't do it, hopefully an accessory manufacturer like Hori does it. And hopefully it includes all the standard Joy-Con features so it can be an outright replacement. One of the crappy things about the Hori left Joy-Con was it didn't support wireless, so it couldn't be used to play shmups with a Flip Grip.

@molkom My day job is animation and yes; generating loads of angles of an object you took IS far off from when animation went digital. The point of art IS the manual labour process. The end product is new and fresh and interesting BECAUSE of the manual labour involved. My favourite parts of my job are when I get paid to do things that are difficult and not strictly necessary for the company's end product, but strengthen my understanding of the craft and help make the end product look that bit more fresh and interesting. My least favourite bits are when I have do get out of the driver's seat and mindlessly click buttons and let the computer do all the manual labour. Like, art is not just about having the coolest ideas that pop into your head. Ai doesn't lead to better artistic output simply by virtue of letting you get the idea out faster.

It's always clear to me that the people who make arguments in favour of AI citing "less work for artists" don't make art of their own and don't take it seriously. And that's okay, I don't cook but like I'm gonna take my food opinions with a grain of salt when I'm talking to a chef!

Re: Censored Dispatch Artwork Spotted On Nintendo's Digital Storefront

topsekret

@RiasGremory Unfortunately, they have started censoring and banning games in the US and EU over the last year.

Here's a recent article about how the game Brave x Junction had to be censored only on Switch to release outside of Japan. Playstation and Steam versions were not censored (Nintendo Everything).

Xseed also recently announced that they had to cancel the release of the Corpse Party Tetralogy Pack outside of Japan due to "current platform guidelines" (Nintendo Life).

Last year, Idea Factory announced that they had to cancel the western release of the Neptunia trilogy and Death End re;Quest: Code Z due to the content of those games "not complying with Nintendo Guidelines" (Nintendo Life).

Last year, the developer of the bullet hell shmup Redneg Allstars announced that his game "has been restricted in Europe and the U.S. due to expression restrictions" (Nintendo Life).

Nintendo has done a total 180 from their laissez-faire approach in the early Switch years. They are now aggressively censoring and banning content that their Council of Karens find offensive.

Re: "If Mario Starts To Show Up On PlayStation, That's The Apocalypse, Right?" - Ex-PlayStation Boss Thinks Console Exclusives Are Still Important

Ristar24

I had a PS3, a DS, 3DS and a Wii, a PS4 and a Switch. Just bought a PS5 but won't be also buying a Switch 2, the combination just costs too much for me at present. It's a point where the value proposition to have access to Nintendo's games may have to skip a generation as I did with Wii U. Plus the unique qualities the DS and 3DS are rather lost post Switch, so 3rd party games are typically just less proficient versions of PS5 / PC games, the bonus being seamless portability. I'll certainly still be using my OLED for games like Terminator T2D and The Last Ninja Collection where nothing is lost in the Switch port, so still be buying those games there.

Debo626

Important qualifier I don't believe I've seen before.
1st party exclusives are great, as in, the company that owns the hardware platform making games exclusively for that platform to support it makes sense from a hardware sales standpoint.
3rd party exclusives, as in Electronic Arts and Square Enix, which aren't made to support a hardware platform, are silly and only reduce total potential sales.

Sometimes I do wish Nintendo would release some of their games on PC at least, especially during the Switch's life cycle, when games could run real choppy because the hardware was outdated by the time it released (that's not to say it was a bad system; it was the first handheld console hybrid). Games like Another Code: Recollection, Princess Peach: Showtime!, and a good few Pokémon games, to name a handful, all struggled on the original switch, and at the time, it made me wish that these games just got a PC release as well. In the end though, we did end up getting a backwards compatible system that runs these games a lot smoother. Do I think Nintendo is better off not releasing any of their games on PC? Not really, but I think the Switch 2 does alleviate that need a bit.

Re: "If Mario Starts To Show Up On PlayStation, That's The Apocalypse, Right?" - Ex-PlayStation Boss Thinks Console Exclusives Are Still Important

Grumblevolcano

@electrolite77 My point was why both platforms continue to sell well. If you want Nintendo 1st party exclusives you have to buy Nintendo hardware but if you want Sony's 1st party games and/or the big 3rd party support you have to buy PS if you want a console.

If Nintendo lost their exclusives, I think that would drive more people to PS because PS would pretty much have everything at that point but that's not the case for Nintendo. Meanwhile the heavily rumoured dockable PS6 handheld covers those who want an experience similar to Switch.

JohnnyMind

I'm way, way more worried about the black and white mentality at display in most comments here than anything else because unfortunately I keep on seeing it applied not only when it comes to gaming or even just genAI usage - which is already serious enough especially when it affects the fellow humans that make games (ironically the loss of jobs is one of the aspects usually mentioned against genAI, but clearly people don't hesitate to affect human workers with their own actions in their crusade against genAI as a whole) -, but also whatever else including literal matters of life and death...

Re: Atlus Looks Forward To Persona's 30th Anniversary In 2026, Acknowledges Support For Persona 4 Revival

Arawn93

@ZombAid82 P4 would be the odd duck out at this point out if P3 and P5 have a modern Atlus JRPG look and P4 doesn’t. P1-P2 doesn’t exist in their rear view mirror before someone brings them up.

P4 is popular enough to justify it since it was the most popular Persona game before P5. P4 did the “give them a bunch of spin-offs” before P5 jumped on that train.

P4 at the end of a day was a PS2 game that came out decade+ ago. Golden added content/QoL, but visually was still a PS2 era game.

I get lot of people are impatient for P6, but people need to remember the gap of P4 and P5 dropping first.

Re: Arcade Archives Celebrates 500 Retro Releases With Special Commemorative Game

shgamer

@RoboCube The Arcade Archives releases do come with some extras though: comprehensive manual included with each game (which can be a God send imo); free leaderboards (no NSO subscription needed - and it's part of the fun trying better your scores imo); you often have several versions of the games (US, japanese etc. - Space Invaders for example comes with OG b&w version, color version and b&w version with background graphics); there are several different modes available with each game (the Switch 2 versions of the games have an added 'Time Attack' mode and is a bit more expensive); there are tons of options to fiddle with (screen filters; reassignable buttons etc. - there could be more I admit - actual buttons/stick setup support for the Tate modes please).

But in the end it comes down to picking the games, that has that "one more try" aura to you personally. So definitely do some research before you buy.

UltimateOtaku91

@Sindayl Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant between Playstation and Xbox. I agree Playstation were very aggressive back during the PlayStation 1 with third party exclusives although I kinda don't blame them as they didn't have any first party studios of their own apart from the guys behind Gran Turismo, so that was their option to make a name for themselves.

Nintendo is able to survive on just their games and their platforms. Sony and Microsoft cannot. First it was mainly needing 3rd-party support, but now, 3rd-parties aren't enough, and they themselves have to branch out to PC and competing platforms to pick up some extra cash. Nintendo getting 3rd-party titles is just icing on the cake, and honestly imo, the Switch 2 is going to have a thickening of that icing because both Sony and MS are making, or have made, decisions that will benefit the Switch 2.

MS already began with the Series S, which devs must make a version for when making a Series X version. According to leaks, Sony is set to release not just the PS6, but a PS6 Portable which is expected to play PS6 games, and those same leaks suggest its specs are not all that much higher than Switch 2, in both portable and docked mode. Essentially, MS and Sony have or are making platforms that devs must take into account, allowing those same devs to go making versions for Switch 2.

electrolite77

@Grumblevolcano

Again, that underestimates the power of convenience. Ever since the Gameboy launched Nintendo have had no issues selling massive numbers of portable systems. All those systems have been missing many of the big third party games of the day. The absence of Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty or whatever it may be hasn’t been an issue. Of course losing their exclusives would have an impact but portability is a huge factor for many.

Re: Square Enix Wants Feedback About The Final Fantasy Series In Its New Survey

BigRadical

This is a great time to do this, since Expedition33 is doing as well as it is. Personally, FF worked best when there were other titles SE worked on and other developers were making their own great RPGs.

It’s a chance to get back to their roots and rebuild from there. Make the games self-contained again while not chasing themes similar to TV shows. Mess with combat mechanics that isn’t just a quicker MMO style.
But also,
Make other games with varying mechanics. Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Xenogears, Vagrant Story.

Re: Arcade Archives Celebrates 500 Retro Releases With Special Commemorative Game

RoboCube

@Waluigi451 It's a ridiculous price to pay, when you could get a handheld that plays Space invaders for that price, it was kinda worth it to get the arcade versions of Donkey Kong and Mario Bros, Vs Super Mario Bros stuff that's never ever re released on anything till the Switch, but Space Invaders has been available on so many systems often as collections with the backgrounds and alternative versions, including the game boy version which has a whole snes ROM hidden in it's cartridge, it's a single screen, once you lasted one round you basically seen everything, it's not the late 70s or early 80s anymore, for $7.99 it's a rip off.
