Re: Review: Genki Covert Dock 3 And ShadowCast 3 - A Surprisingly Compact Mobile Capture Duo For Your Switch 2

I just used the ShadowCast 3 to stream some Kirby Air Riders last night and it worked perfectly. I haven't streamed in years and I've never used a capture card before, but it was super easy to set up and use. I also have the Covert Dock 3 but haven't used it beyond an initial test. I loved the Covert Dock 2 for my Switch 1 though so I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of the 3 (Assuming Nintendo doesn't somehow update the Switch 2 in a way Genki can't combat with firmware updates).

You guys should come join the discord. Been a lot of drama around these devices with the backers:

  • The pro module for shadowcast 3 appears to just be an hdmi splitter
  • Shadowcast 3 doesn't support hdr, but shadowcast 2, so it's actually a downgrade in some respects
  • The claim of this thing being able to handle 14K/120 is laughable. It can barely handle 4k/30, and even then with incorrect colors.
  • If you order, good luck getting a correct tracking code. They are likely to send you a completely random one. They are also likely to sit on your package for weeks at a time before finally shipping it.

I picked this up. Got through the first world and enjoyed it quite a bit! Controls felt weird and stiff at first, but immediately felt better when I took off the 45-degree angle lock.

Got to the second world and was quite taken aback by the performance drop. First world seemed like a solid 60 while the second world was... not. Bit disappointing! I know the Switch can handle this, games like Bananza run smooth as butter with much more complexity. I don't care if you lose all the detail and Meat Boy becomes a perfect cube, I would rather have 60FPS.

Eh.. A regular ol (V1) GenkiShadowcast with one of these gets the job done with my Switch2 easily.

Not sure why Genki updates their product if their first one works well still

Heck it works with my Android drawing tablet and I don't even need a Computer.
LPing has never been easier.

.. And any less pointless

@CaleBoi25
UGREEN has some (for Switch one and for Switch2 I think Antek or something was a good dock, but finding decent standalone capture solutions with good resolution is not easy

@Moistnado it was with switch 1, I haven’t heard of any cases with switch 2 yet. Not like with switch 1 at least. Is it a thing? Most compact docks to date rely on the official switch 2 adapter, I’ve had zero issues using the jemdo cable with the official switch 2 adapter and I’ve been using it while on the go since August last year. Perhaps it’s different with a non official adapter.

I love the idea! I worry about using any sort of 3rd party dock with such a new system. However unlikely, it's possible Nintendo could push an update that just "happens" to brick consoles using 3rd party docks or something.

My favorite one with the original switch was a minimal shell where you took the components out of an official Switch dock and used them inside the tiny shell. At least that feels a little safer because it uses all the actual dock hardware and inputs, so it should have perfect compatibility with any firmware updates.

But yeah if there's not any problems reported by the community after a year or two I may just pick one up!

BLK_4EVER

That's a sleek looking dock and would be perfect for those who travel a lot, especially if you're staying in a hotel. The price isn't bad either in my opinion for quite a bit of features. Some emotional babies probably won't buy any Genki products because they leaked the Switch 2. Kind of ridiculous how some people are really bothered by something that had no effect on Nintendo and the sales of the Switch 2. Things get leaked all the time and if it bothers you to the point of boycotting future services or products from a particular company, please seek help. It really shouldn't be that serious

@HandheldHero @Suketoudara @SalvorHardin either a bot, a troll, or a salty 11 year old whose parents haven’t bought them a Switch 2 yet. At this point you’d have to be one of those 3 things to suggest that the Switch 2 isn’t fully capable of running very demanding, current-gen games with solid performance given a little effort by the devs to optimize. Lazy ports and / or temperamental engines are generally to blame, not the hardware.

Re: Review: Snow Bros. Nick & Tom Special (Switch) - A Tired Bubble Bobble-Alike That's Finally Affordable

I remembered this review just because of how unprofessional and useless it felt at the time since I had such great memories of Snow Bros. After getting the game recently I came to say that it's actually worse and more inaccurate than I even remembered. Parts like saying that the enemies potter about are straight up lies as there' many different kinds with many movements and some more aggressive than others.

I'm usually very respectful but in like 10 years or more of being on this site, this is by far the worst thing I have read on Nintendolife and it gives the impression that the reviewer tried to be funny rather than doing a good review. I thought that it wouldn't be as bad as my first impression but it made me cringe several times. There's also a clear bias against the game because of his preference for Bubble Bobble, which in my opinion while similar, was slower and less fun than Snow Bros, which felt faster and more engaging thanks to the rolling snowball mechanics and even offers other playable characters with their own twist.

Re: Review: Adventure Of Samsara (Switch) - Atari's Throwback Metroidvania Embraces Cycles Of Life, Death, And More Death

6 months later I played it, and I disagree with almost all the takeaways here!

First, the game is not hard. It is a total breeze compared to Hollow Knight or Metroid Dread, for example. Only one boss took more than one try—the rest I beat on the first shot. The first couple low-level enemies you fight are hard, because you have to learn the parry system (hint: sound cues are important!), but the game really is pretty easy throughout. I have no idea what the reviewer is referring to in difficulty spikes. If anything, there's an anti-difficulty spike—it seems hard up front and then gets really easy after 1-2 hours.

Second, cheap deaths are nonexistent. There is real clarity to what you're doing and what went wrong—an upside of the deliberate controls. "Cheap knockback deaths?" You're hardly punished at all for falling! Fall into a pit? No problem, you'll respawn quite close by, and you lose about as much health as just getting hit once by an enemy.

Third: parkour-like platforming? The platforming is very mundane and takes a clear backseat to action. Again, Samsara's challenge in this vein is far lower than much of its genre.

Rigid inputs and lock animations are a feature not a bug. Fluidly responsive, "cancel-anything" mechanics are trendy in modern game design, but they're... cheap. If there is no consequence for mistakes, then you can get through the game without learning—without engaging with the game's systems and challenges.

I only had two complaints with the game (which I liked!), but they are pretty significant:

1) My game crashed 5 times (twice on the caterpillar boss), causing me to lose progress. The replays were fairly quick since the game isn't hard, but this was quite frustrating.

2) The denouement was really flat. It almost seemed like they planned more but ran out of time. The game ended abruptly! And motivations/implications were not explored. A bummer—I was enjoying the admittedly elusive story.

All in all, a really cool game with very unique art & mood. Clear inspirations from Blasphemous and to a lesser extent HK. I would recommend it heartily but for the bugs/crashes. Given that issue, I'd recommend it only to dedicated genre fans.

If you give it a try, push through that first hour, which is slow—it really picks up.
