Surprisingly Nintendo and MercurySteam have released another update for Samus' latest adventure, Metroid Dread.
This latest update fixes an issue that would make Samus disappear under certain conditions. The development team says it's made the fix to keep the experience as it was intended. Apart from this, there are no other changes or fixes in this latest update.
Here are the full patch notes for Version 1.0.3, courtesy of the Nintendo website:
Ver. 1.0.3 (Released November 16, 2021)
General Fixes
Fixed an issue where Samus’ damage detection would disappear under certain conditions.
We made the decision to fix this issue because there is a possibility that it may occur unintentionally, and if it does, it will result in a play experience that is far different from the way Metroid Dread was originally intended to be experienced.
Nintendo Dataminer OatmealDome reveals how the note may have been directed at speedrunners:
This latest update follows on from Version 1.0.2, which included a final boss fix, and a number of other fixes. You can read more about this particular patch in our previous update.
If you haven't tried out Metroid Dread yet, what are you waiting for? You can learn more about it in our Nintendo Life review - where we awarded the game an outstanding 10 out of 10 stars. You can also download a free demo of the game from the Switch eShop.

It's strange to see this much clarity within Nintendo patch notes. They don't tend to justify their changes very often, let alone explain them.
@StarPoint : You must be thinking of Nintendo's firmware updates, whose notes tend to be very vague, usually to the tune of enhanced stability for an "improved user experience".
Glad that they're keeping in the glitches and sequence breaks, which like any good Metroid game, will contribute to its longevity in the speed running community.
This sounds like it will get rid of the invincibility glitch that the speed runners are using to skip the suit upgrades
@nbell31b that's exactly what I was thinking. We'll see what happens.
@StarPoint I think they are explaining it incase the speedrun community had some tricks with it (I imagine the hot and cold zones and lava shenanigans if there is any).
@Silly_G
I believe hardware updates are kept under-wraps because if they told anyone, it'd be easier for hackers to find out what was changed and easily bypass anti piracy measures
So when are we getting the DLC?
For me it doesn't matter i took my copy back and got my money back..Not a good game
So did they add the names of the developers that they omitted??
@NWC you seem like a real fun person to have around. Thanks for sharing for the millionth time that not only did you take it back, you also got a refund. Sorry you didn’t like it.
This may be the first negative situation Metroid Dread is going to face. I'm interested in the reaction and activity from the game's most dedicated players through this week. This doesn't drastically effect my current experience with the game, but it does limit the possible experiences that could have been had. If the justification is to play as intended, this could be the start of many changes that continue to really impact the game.
I like that they actually considered it from a speedrunning perspective. I'm still hurt about the early Space Jump and Plasma Beam "fixes" in later releases of Prime 1. So I'm glad they're actually considering whether it is something that could hurt casual players or not.
@StarPoint Haven't Smash Bros patchnotes also been rather in depth? Certainly not explaining the reasoning behind the changes, but still.
It's mostly their OS Updates that are completely opaque.
@EriXz I don't think we are getting any DLC.
Personally I'm okay with this. If it's not by design then sure patch it up. Speedrunners should work around that. If there are still some glitches to exploit for faster runs then sure go ham. But if it's patched again I see no reason for people to become upset. People still need to respect what the original design was whether we like it or not. If not then drop the game.
Can we get a patch for easy mode, so I can stand a chance of beating the final boss? I’ve pretty much given up trying to beat him now.
I’m really, REALLY enjoyed Dread. It has got better and better for me, I’ve just got the Power Bomb and now going back for more collectibles. I’ll face Raven Beak soon, but I don’t want it to be over just yet.
@Clammy This! A simple optional saving between his phases whould make it way more manageable.
So if I understand this right, they would've left this glitch alone if you had to trigger it intentionally, but otherwise they felt they needed to for the rare chance it triggers unintentionally?
I can understand the reasoning, it's still an upset for speedrunners, but it won't stop them from just playing the game on lower versions.
@Clammy I get that, and I generally hate it people replay with crap "it's really not that hard" comments...but I promise you, it really isn't. It's all about learning the patterns and how to effectively avoid attacks. I ran that fight 30+ times without getting past his 2nd phase, and damn near gave up completely. I put it down for a day and came back later, managed it with very little effort the first attempt. Then I just ran that fight over and over and really learned the tells, now that fight is a joke. If all else fails, there's no shame in watching a yt video of a run to get a better feel for it.
Dread DLC for GOTY
@Knuckles 😭😭
“We made the decision to repair the bridge because it was broken and there is a possibility that people might fall into the water and get eaten by piranhas unintentionally if they try to cross it while broken, resulting in a very different bridge crossing experience from the experience that was intended”
I don’t mean to be snarky. I actually find quite sweet that they’ve seemingly considered things from the speedrunners’ perspectives! It’s just quite funny that they’ve gone to this much effort to justify why they patched exactly the sort of thing you’d expect to be patched.
Nintendo never fixed all the glitches in BotW that speedrunners took advantage of, why this one?
@Zyph I don't think most people will really be upset about it other than from a simple "aww, can't mess around with that glitch anymore" perspective. Glitches can be fun to experiment with, see how the game handles unexpected events and all that, and so long as they don't harm anyone, break your game, or lead to online cheating, then it's always a bit of a shame when they're patched.
Just a little bit. We can certainly live without them.
@Yosher Oh certainly. But I can still imagine some folks (even if they're not speedrunners) will still get mad and tell the devs to just leave the glitch(es) alone. This is the internet afterall. Anything that is at face value "negative" even when it's not will probably trigger someone out there. They fixed a glitch used for speed running so that potentially makes it a negative in the mind of let's say who enjoys watching Dread speedruns. It sucks yeah, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter.
@NoTinderLife Probably because there's still a chance you can trigger it in normal circumstances even for less experienced players and they might not like that. I'm basing that from what they're saying. I played BotW very early with minimal game updates and personally never experienced any of the speedrunning glitches...unless I wanted to.
They're not punishing speedrunners. The glitch could just get triggered inadvertently and that's a bad thing. That would make it an outright bug rather than a glitch.
It's there a patch coming to make the boss fights good?
@I-U Did you miss the controversy over the closing credits leaving out people whose work was included in the game?
@Jaguar_Wong What do you see as bad about the boss fights? I have a couple quibbles — a little repetitive near the end, and the final boss had a stage or two that was maybe too long — but overall, they were a lot of fun. What boss fights are you comparing them to?
@Alex78 not really controversial though, it was known company policy. Why sulk about no credit if you knew you would get no credit and still accepted the job?
@NoTinderLife There's a gazillion in BotW. Metroid Dread seems to have been made with sequence breaking and speed runners completely in mind while developing. I think they are trying to control it a bit. Invincibility glitches are really, really boring, so I kind of get it. Not sure I agree with it anyway, but I like that Nintendo and Mercury Steam went into development completely aware of the speed running scene and designed a game into it. That part is great.
@aaronsullivan I found there were too many humanoid bosses. One was a low-detail underwater flower, and there was only one classic boss with the surprise ruined in the trailer. The bosses in Dread were a low point in a series which usually has iconic bosses.
@Silly_G Ever seen VITA and PS4 FW notes?
"System Stability" 1000 times already the last years.
Sony is as vague as Nintendo.
@Clammy Yeah they turned it up to 11 with that boss; however, you can go and get all of the upgrades to the suit which should make it easier. Also bosses in this game are like mega man. Just keep on dying over and over until you get the hang of it. Also if you feel yourself getting angry just take a break and come back later.
@Clammy
Not a lot of people seem to realize that in Phase 3, you can use your Super/Mega Bomb thingy to destroy the giant sun thing he uses. It also gives you health and missles when you do this. Making Phase 3 the easiest phase, actually.
Never happened to me, but I still managed to complete the game under 3:30 on my 5th run
I mean it is Metroid we are talking about. Makes sense they would want to be as clear and transparent as possible when they fix stuff. Speedrunners are all over this and likely to exploit anything really.
@NWC cool story.
@Gwynbleidd But that's the problem, they are far too easy. The main bosses are glorified quick time events, sub bosses you can just brute-force. It's a fun game but not a particularly satisfying one.
@aaronsullivan as I've said to someone else, they are far too easy. The main bosses are glorified quick time events, sub bosses you can just brute-force. The final boss in particular had a single attack in the middle phase that was tricky - other than that it's easy dodging while you w wait for a counter opportunity. Then hammer the missiles while you watch the cinematic.
@Pavy_1983 @Clammy This is good advice. Save your bombs for that sequence. Watching a YouTube video was very helpful to me. As previously stated, no shame in that, you still have to execute it.
Give us an option to move with the Dpad instead of the analog!!!!
@Desrever You think shineclipping is by design? Or pseudowave beam? The community takes pride in finding every way to break every Metroid game (and every game in general that is good for speedrunning) and turns that into a sport, which only helps the games' spotlight in the media. Patching all this will make it less interesting on Twitch, etc. which will mean less of a digital footprint in social media which will ultimately mean less sales for the companies publishing and making the games.
@Desrever Prime 1 had several speedrunning tactics patched, so unless you were able to buy the 1.0 version, you were either screwed or had to go to the second hand market to get the 1.0 version, which means less money going to Nintendo. See my point?
@Jaguar_Wong "Glorified QTEs" Lol, try going through the game never countering unless you're forced to. It's very satisfying and actually feels like Metroid (I hated the counter in SR as well and never used it at all). There are only two parts where you need to counter: against Corpius to avoid getting hit (even then, you don't have to shoot him afterwards, just wait for it to time out) and against RB when countering is the only way to hurt him.
@ChromaticDracula Well Chromatic not everyone agrees with you and i frankly did not like the game...It's just my opinion..Don't get all twisted in knots there man...It's just a game lol ...Muted! Bye
@-wc- bye! Ignore button pushed Thanks
@KennyRyan Hey i love your profile pic.. Very cool
@ChromaticDracula @NWC
"Well Chromatic not everyone agrees with you and i frankly did not like the game...It's just my opinion.. [...] ...Muted! Bye"
they are such a champion of differing opinions that they mute everyone who disagrees with theirs, eh?
🙄
@-wc- 😂😂 it would definitely appear so.
I just finished the game last night! Took 10 seconds under 20 hours lmao. A large majority of that time was me going all around the maps to ensure I covered every little square on the map so it was all filled in. It was a little amusing how I had almost all the super bombs before I got the power, just because of the exploring I was able to do.
I love how the game allows as much exploration as you want, as long as you are able to get somewhere you want to be. It guides you to where you should go to continue the game plot very well, and doesn't punish you or anything for going on divergent paths and messing around and exploring.
Big plus is just learning how they've kept the speedrunning community in mind. I don't speedrun myself, but I really appreciate their efforts for giving so much flexibility in what you can do throughout the game. I might be a little interested into seeing how the speedrun might be for this game.
It is rare for me to be so invested into a game that I look forward to continuing the game each day. I swore to myself to also not look at anything related to the game online - guides, spoilers, images, and even just knowing review scores. This game made me want to just experience it in it's full glory without any previous knowledge or opinions made, until only after I completed the game. One of the few games that also has felt pretty rewarding getting that 100% mark on the profile!
Now that I completed it, I am more willing to learn how to obtain the last few images in the ending photos
@AmplifyMJ Good luck! I'm so glad the game lets you go back and explore anywhere you want, very easily.
@Clammy You can do it. He’s tough, but just really study his patterns. And be very focused and responsive. It took me quite a few tries but I crushed him. Its almost like fighting a classic Mega Man boss. Hang in there!
@Clammy This may be overly simple advice, but have you collected all the hidden E-tanks?
That's the patch!? That's it? Nothing about half the game being colored black? Or the lack of custom controls? Or maybe adding a run button and reducing her default run speed? Or maybe reinjecting it with more classic metroid music in the item rooms?? Anyone else notice these things?
@NWC If you really hate a game that so many people are enjoying why do you feel the need to keep telling everyone? It's like you're bothered that others are having fun. Also, it's really weird that you spend so much time reading and commenting on articles about games.you don't own and don't like.
@SparkyAran How do you know what i own or like Hummm?
And what i chose to say or do on this site is really none of your business..What's weird is you stalking me on a social Nintendo site.. It's called opinion..You might learn that sometime and frankly kiddo find someone else to stalk as im now hitting the ignore button i won't be hearing from you again..Don't have time to be debate a stalker.. I stated i didn't like the game and moved on it's you who can't get over yourself... ignored and blocked... Goodbye!
@NWC How do I know? You just told us, repeatedly.
The only "moving on" you did was moving to another thread to tell is again. It's not very cool to make light of stalking. Lots of women live in fear of that, and you're here joking about it. Gross.
