Watch the release trailer
Football is all about fun and teamwork. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the field or play it on console sitting with your friends on the couch. With its vintage, not-too-serious, artistic and creative modern approach to classic gameplay, Golazo! is certainly a perfect game for people who are weary of football managers or complicated hard-core simulators. You just grab your pad, sit on the couch and play!
In Golazo! you will find a ton of fun and:
+ Three arcade dynamic game modes: quick match, World Cup, International ranking
+ Ideal for Couch & Party gamers
+ Furious matches up to 4 players (offline multiplayer)
+ Who needs rules? No fouls and offsides!
+ Legendary players used as reference
+ 6 languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese and Polish
+ 32 national teams in International Cup mode with ranking
+ A locker room where you can exchange your points to new kits or balls.
+ Humor – football managers and simulators are boring. Let’s bring back fun to football!
Original Story (Fri 8th Jun, 2018 11:00 BST): Purple Tree and Klabater are linking up to release '90s Football Stars on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
Described as an "arcade football game with super-fast, dynamic gameplay, retro attitude, and no holds barred matches", '90s Football Stars aims to replicate the speedy gameplay seen in classic soccer titles and even uses a VHS-style filter for that authentic, old-school effect.
All of the teams that qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia will be available, and an additional 50-odd teams will be added "later on", according to the developer. The likenesses of legendary players have been used for certain character designs, and the game's soundtrack will apparently bring back "the sound of the '90s'.
There's no release date as yet, but we're told '90s Football Stars is coming soon.

Looks good, hopefully it plays well and actually works unlike Legendary Eleven, which is apparently a buggy mess.
Well that looks terrible
Don't think I've ever seen a trailer for a football game that didn't show gameplay footage of a goal being scored.
The gameplay footage was very suspiciously absent of anything other than a couple of sliding tackles.
@AcridSkull agreed
Fun fact: in Poland a mullet is called "Czech football player hairstyle".
The VHS effect is really unnecessary, why would anyone want that? I like adding scanlines onto the old arcade games for that authentic look but the VHS effect is really taking it too far.Surely it can be turned off?
I'll reserve judgement on the game until I read a review of it. I wish I done the same with Legendary Eleven. Game is full of bugs and basically broken. Looks and plays Ok but what good is that if every other match you lose control of your players and are forced to quit the game.
If my comment comes across as grumpy ,that's because I am. It's a joke to release a game in that state.
Always up for trying an arcade footy game.
@geordie Just don't try Legendary Eleven ,at least not yet If it's patched and I'm sure it will it could be alright but as it stands, the game is broken.
It doesn’t look great from that strange preview!
I skipped Legendary Eleven as it didn’t have custom options.
Retro soccer games without a license need player and team editors.
If I can recreate World Cup squads from 90 or 98 in full in this - I am in and I’ll learn to like the game play!
Same if legendary eleven add editing
@OorWullie yeah was going to wait and see with that game.
Hoping a sensi clone like active soccer 2 dx might hit the Switch some time.
@OorWullie fortunately I saw a review on YouTube for Legendary Eleven before I bought it. They said 50% of the matches they played had a bug that broke the game, things like:
being unable to take a corner and having to wait until half-time to proceed,
the other team committing a foul at the halfway line and being awarded a penalty,
not being able to shoot,
the other team running away from the ball.
It's a shame as, apparently, when it works it's a lot of fun.
"Hopefully in time for the World Cup."
Maybe reading too much into this, but good dig at Tennis World Tour. 😄
@OorWullie The VHS thing was already p**sing me off in that video, so the full game is going to be an eyesore! A cool retro eyesore though
I hope that VHS effect is not present during gameplay or can at least be turned off.
Looks fun for 10 min maybe. Hopefully the game has more to offer. VHS filter makes it nice but I expect for them not to abuse with it during actual gameplay.
Looks good, but it's a goddam football...
Please tell me that stupid VHS effect is just for the trailer? Looks good apart from that!
I’ll get a soccer/football game on Switch when it starts with the word “Inazuma”
Yikes....
To me the only thing I consider fun to still recreate from the VHS days would be the sound. I never appreciated the inconsistency with the static-y artifacts, it was just annoying. If you want to affect the visual quality, especially of a video game, just recreate composite or s-video quality. It'll look bad but at least it will be consistent.
VHS effect is a great way to turn off potential purchasers. I couldn’t even watch the full video...
That looks like a whole new game. That old trailer and new trailer are like night and day. Hope to see some gameplay of this and might consider getting it
Price is crucial for this. Anything from €10 or less and I'd consider. Otherwise it's wait for a sale.
It seems that the "features" (no offsides, no fouls) are just justifications of limited development budget. Specially when those are not optative.
The VHS filter makes no sense when the graphics are cartoonish, its another justification for being 90's.
But who knows Maybe is fun..
Better title now.
Just play Super Soccer 'free' as part of NSO. It's average, even crappy at times, but, it still guaranteed plays and looks a lot better than this newly announced game.
Hey so what's wrong with the title of this Game? It's a Soccer Game but for some reason it has Football in the title when it's not a Football Game.Maybe the marketing department made a mistake either way I hope they're able to fix it soon because it seems people are already getting confused in the comment section.
No wonder EA FIFA doesn’t even bother to improve the game. Look at the competition
We love soccer, but EA needs to step up for fifa switch, this is getting ridiculous that a switch can run witcher 3 & other demanding games as well on the switch, yet EA is set to release legacy edition for switch.. this blows.
So this game did release as Early Access on Steam... did not review well... is Golazo! essentially a different game?
I'm always interested in a fun, arcade sports game... but this one looks iffy.
SEGA Soccer Slam... please!
This looks cool to me. Think I’ll pick this up over the “new” FIFA. Can’t seem to find a price but if it’s around $20, I’ll get it at launch. Otherwise I’ll get it further down the line.
@LoveEmpath Nobody in the comments section is confused. The game has ‘football’ in the title because that’s what the sport is called in most countries, because it involves kicking a ball with one’s feet. It’s only known as ‘soccer’ in American English, while the other sport known by some as football (which nonsensically requires both your hands AND your feet) is called American Football by most outside North America.
Surely this will be something like $9.99?
@AcridSkull Legendary Eleven received significant patching, game is very playable now
FIFA legacy edition on the eshop in Canada at full price $79.99. I guess you pay for fouls and offsides.
for those curious, in Portuguese, or at least in Brazil, "golaço" means an awesome/hard/difficult goal score in football ("soccer"). I guess they thought the accented "ç" would be too daunting for foreigners so they went with a z
@dux
I may be wrong, but "golazo" might be the Spanish or Italian spelling. In any case, funnily enough, British football fans (who grew up in the 90s) are very familiar with the word as there was a popular Italian football show in Britain (Football Italia) which featured the word "golazo" prominently in the title theme. Though at the time many people wrongly thought it was saying "Goal Lazio!" (as in the team).
@patphenom cheers, I'll get it when it's next on sale.
As per my comment a year ago.... please have team editor. I want to be able to edit names.
Sports games like this need it.
I agree with the comments above regarding the VHS effect; if this is part of the game they’ve scored a big own-goal there.
@thiswaynow
This was an old article that's been updated, so a lot of the earlier comments are referring to the old trailer from last year. It appears from the new trailer (at the top) that the VHS effect has gone (if it was ever intended to be in the game. It may have just been an effect for the trailer, I don't know).
But: is it going to be better than Active Soccer, especially for fans of the more classic type of game?
@Markiemania95 Couldn't have said it any better myself. And I'm an American...
(living in Europe, though)
@holygeez03 I'd definitely second an HD makeover of Sega Soccer Slam. Heck, I probably wouldn't even mind if they ported it 1:1...
@Haywired
‘Golazo’ is spanish. It means “great goal”.
90s Football Stars is still a disaster on Steam early access. Not been updated since February.
I guess they been busy picking a new name and logo 🙄
@Haywired oh, you're right! It's in Spanish. It's the same meaning, though: the word goal became "gol" in both Portuguese and Spanish, and the ending suffix "-laço" or "-lazo" in those cases means something big, huge, colossal
@Haywired Quite right, I had viewed the trailer at the bottom of the article, which did have the annoying static VHS effect. The top video looks much better without it.
@Markiemania95 @LoveEmpath gotta love the way only Americans can be so ignorant and arrogant at the same time ❤️
Not saying all Americans are like that, of course, but this specific breed of ignorance, arrogance and self-centeredness (is that even a word? Lol) I’ve only encountered in Americans.
@Haywired @dux “golazo” is indeed the Spanish spelling 😄
Im liking the look of this. Could be a gem!
@clvr you're so very ungrateful for everything the United States of America has done for you, also way to make this political this is a gaming site but you instead choose to bash 330 million american some of which serve in more than 80 countries throughout the world protecting the Worlds Liberty as best they can.
@LoveEmpath this is exactly what I’m talking about: such blatantly ludicrous patriotism I have to believe you’re kidding/trolling because, come on, you cannot be serious, right? 😅😂
By the way I remember your crusade from another article, when you tried to “correct” the rest of the world by telling them football is called soccer 😂😂😂
Dude don’t be ridiculous, I’ve already stated that it’s literally impossible for all Americans to be as crass , ignorant and arrogant as you, but you obviously didn’t read that.
Not really sure why you ultra-patriotic Americans have this notion that the world should be grateful to you, it’s actually the pinncle of that self-centerdness I was talking about earlier.
Let’s put things into perspective: your culture comes from European culture, your language is a European tongue that mixes words from a lot of different European languages; European culture has existed for thousands of years, yours (which is still originated from EU culture) has existed for less than 300 years; and you still want to convince me we should be grateful to you?
Ok mate, clearly those 300 years have sprung way more culture than the thousands of years before lol
Of course this comment is like talking to a brick wall since, judging by your previous comments, you’re never going to learn anything, but god you’re so annoying I simply cannot let it go lol
Despite everything the US do right (which is objectively a lot), you’re proof of why it’s hard for the rest of the world to take you seriously 😘
Heh! This actually reminds me of the early 90s when my Grandad had a thing for Italian Cup Football. Channel 4 would play a lot of Italian footy, and in the intro there would be a guy that screams "GOLAZO!" off his lungs! lmao!
https://youtu.be/x0aQ8QGEoGU?t=346
The game however... It just looks like a generic no rules football game. Behold the Kickmen looks like a better No Rule Football game to me. https://store.steampowered.com/app/529440/Behold_the_Kickmen/
@Markiemania95 Actually Rugby and American Football both evolved from Football. Soccer was a slang term for Association Football which what Football was called in England at the time to differentiate it from other forms of football mainly Rugby Football. As time went on Rugby Football just became more well known as Rugby, and Association Football just became football. In America thought American Football became football and Association Football went by the slang term soccer.
@clvr Stop disrespecting our 3 million plus person military
I'm italian and I don't speak portoguese, but since I heard for many years a former brazillian football/soccer player commenting matches on television (Jose Altafini) the right way of writing the name shouldn't be << golaço >> instead of Golazo?
Looks really nice, will purchase if it's at the right price.
Looks better than Fifa.
@Cesco “golaço” is the Portuguese spelling, while “golazo” is the Spanish one (also the pronounciation changes a bit).
Never thought I’d see Altafini mentioned in here lol (I’m Italian too) 😂
@LoveEmpath ok dear, I’ve never even ever thought of mentioning them but ok ❤️😂
I think this games works best with another person, the CPU players are woeful in my first few games, e.g. they have an empty net and they refuse to shoot, waiting to be tackled.
Could be fun couch co-op, 6-a-side mayhem.
@OorWullie Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa that's just an effect for the trailer you fool.
@DockEllisD oweeeeeeeeeeeeeeen! Gol Gol goaaaaal
