Earlier this week our colleagues at Family Gamer TV put the New Nintendo 3DS battery to the test against some of its predecessors. It was a pretty handy indication of where it stands, but there's now an updated video that throws in the New XL and shakes up the settings to satisfy our curiosity.
In addition to including a New XL along with the New standard, 2DS and original + XL, the channel incorporates comments from the Nintendo Life readers by having 3D off, while brightness was high and wi-fi off. The numbers below show favourable results for the New hardware, with the smaller model measuring up well; it's suggested, with sound logic, that the CPU activity and face tracking on the New models for stable 3D is a notable factor - more-so than the conventional 3D of older models - in reducing battery life. The smaller model had two extra hours of life with 3D turned off, in comparison to the previous test.
- New 3DS XL - 5:45
- New 3DS - 5:23
- 3DS XL - 5:01
- 2DS - 4:36
- 3DS - 4:05
The video also tests charging times, for those of you aiming for full juice from an empty battery.
- 2DS - 2:55
- New 3DS - 3:02
- 3DS XL - 3:07
- New 3DS XL - 3:14
- 3DS - 3:16
We certainly recommend checking out the whole video, as it looks into more features, compares units and even demonstrates the auto-brightness feature of the New models.

Good to know I'll get an extra 45 mins out of my New XL! I'm getting excited and rather can't wait for it to come.
well i play differently^^
brightness on 2 with power saving
3D 100%
wifi ON
Well, it's longer, but not really a significant leap considering that "improved battery life" is one of the marketing points. I mean, they're not lying, but still.
I would be more interested in power reduction in sleep mode though. Maybe it's Street Pass and Spot Pass, but the 3DS drains pretty fast while closed. In comparison, I can put my Vita in sleep mode for like 2 weeks and it'll still have plenty of juice in it.
Lol, I have everything maxed usually. I may get some good use out of the auto brightness as at night All the lights are usually turned off in my home.
@CaviarMeths it's the wireless, if you turn it off, you can have the 3DS con sleep mode for weeks
@6ch6ris6 Whoa respect to your eyes XD I can't play under 4 and power saving off...no way.
I watched NihongoGamer's review yesterday. Still getting the original because of the cover plates.
WIFI is always on.

@6ch6ris6
I play with Brightness on 5 without power saving.
Compelling... I get an extra 3/4 of an hour out of an N3DSXL over my 3DSXL. Still not high on my to do list due to other expenses I have to take care of this year, but if the timing and the price are right at the right time.....
I like to live on the edge. Brightness on high, no power save, wifi on, 3d on full. #LivingLikeLarry
Wow, big jump for me. From 4:05 on the 3DS to 5:45 on the New XL, and that's with the brightness on full blast! I'll have many more hours of charge to look forward to
@Lord_Redwood I'm right there with ya. These are the only acceptable configurations for playing, in my opinion, for max entertainment.
Brightness about 3 or 4 on power save. 3D depth slider all the way down and wifi off.
Does the New 3DS XL use the same battery as the regular XL?
Love his cat!
On my 3DS xL, I typically keep the brightness on 1 at home (3 if in a bright office environment and 5 for outside). Color rendition is poor in battery saving mode so I keep it off. I occasionally use 3D. When I do, it's at halfway (full gives me headaches). I love 3D though and would like to use it more with the eye tracking...
I love the 3D. The eye-tracking 3D experience is one of the biggest selling points to me for the New 3DS (XL, in my case). That and Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.
Not watched the video but I'm sure they're not addressing the fact that the batteries in their older devices are just that, old. Hardly a fair test unless done straight from the box. - Then again, maybe they did do that and I'm being a bit pedantic.
I'd like to note from personal experience that my N3DS doesn't seem to last as long as my old 3DSXL.
Oh, this is embarassing. New XL battery with 3D off is only an hour more than my current 2DS. Whats the point. I dont use 3D for all may games anyway.
pretty neat
I don't use 3D on my original 3DS but if it's better like I read everywhere I might always use it on my new Red XL (Still sad about bot getting the regular). The 3D on the old one gave me a headache and my eyes would become tired fast so to be able to use it will be cool. I find it a bit sad that there's no real progress for battery life compared to the old system.
