While a number of developers and high-profile games have tentatively stated that they'll arrive on Wii U, one that has clearly promised an appearance is Darksiders II from Vigil Games. Although anticipated as a release in the new console's launch period, the developer has gone one step further and stated that its title will be there on day one.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Lead designer Hayden Dalton confirmed the launch day release and promised that a team are working hard to make use of the Wii U's tablet controller.
That's been very interesting to see what those guys are doing, and they're making efforts to make sure we do use it in more than a slapdash way. It's basically the core game, but then with added abilities to do certain things that you can't do on the other consoles.
One of the things that we did, when we were originally going to show it off, was that you could equip stuff directly. So, for instance, I could be running along and I could click on another piece and I could put it on as I'm running through the game. That's huge, it's not breaking up the game in a way, I'm not going into a menu and assigning it, I'm literally just tapping as I'm playing.
We're not basically heavily changing the core game to support the control system, but the control system will be an enhancement of the core game.
Using the controller's screen for inventory management is likely to become common, and won't necessarily make use of the device's varied capabilities. It's early days and much can be done yet, however, and it's encouraging that a developer is showing such enthusiasm ahead of Wii U's launch this year.

O.M.G. Day one purchase confirmed. I see no reason to get the PS3/360 version, Wii U is the way to go, I can't wait to see more of their ideas. Just proves how wrong people are when they call the U-Pad "stupid" .>.<
That sounds like an amazing gameplay mechanic. great to see devs making use of the controls. I would absolutely love to see more games use this method. No more annoying pause menus or cluttered HUD's.
Just a clean, crisp picture of the full game. That'd be awesome! I'm definitely getting the WiiU version of Darksiders 2 as a WiiU launch game if this works well.
Sweet!
Like the equip mechanic idea with the Wii U controller
I adore DS menus like that so I'm glad to see it be continued for Wii U ASAP.
Resident Evil Revelations is a great example if this system being used well. All of the menus are on the bottom screen and weapon changes can be made using buttons or touch with both being useful at different times. I can't wait to see my friends' faces when I show them how awesome this can be (they're mostly xbots).
I've heard a lot of cool things about this game, but this just made it cooler. This could actually come in handy. I really hope to see other cool day one releases.
Hey, ever think of Diablo III on the Wii U? Tablet controls for inventory items and what not? Sounds good right?
im really looking forward to his game, and the WiiU, but the question is how well will this work? on a DS the screens are so close, but sitting on the couch with my controller in my lap i rarely see it. Not saying it wont work, but the pad screen will need to be quickly read. I hope it works though.
oh, and does "day one" mean that guy knows the WiiU launch date? Otherwise how does he know the game will be ready?
I am thinking somewhere between August 20th and September 29th here in the States. Around the same time as the SNES and N64. It would give them time to build momentum into the holiday season.
U know what else is gonna be in stores on Day one? Meh
Am I the only one getting confused between this and the Darkness II?
November. can't come soon enough. Better be more than this, though, that art style is super cheesy; it's like "battle of the warlords of the high-school-boy-doodle-muscle-guy-with-jagged-blades-all-over-and long-hair-and-lots-o-skulls-n-stuff". Come on man, when are we going to have games designed by story tellers not the same old fantasy-loving, chauvanist, gamer nerds.
Two screens have always been better than one.
I'd get it on the Wii U, so I don't have to play it on a different TV. I only have 1 HDTV in my house, (My other broke) and the Wii U's getting it.
@Haxonberik Nope. I haven't played either in the series so I thought they were the same game until earlier today.
Wii U and "Darksiders 2" on the launch day for me then. Could play it on 360 but it would only be half of the fun and waste of money.
Played a little of Darksiders on the PS3 and found it to be somewhat fun. I think Darksiders 2 and Assassin's Creed 3, if it's available day one, will be a must buy on the Wii U for me.
Ren - blame Image Comics. Or more precisely Todd McFarlane and Rob Leififled.
I say this will be a good replacement for the Zelda-ish type of adventure/RPG kinda game, especially as its a day one thing and also more mature but still pretty much of a everyone's thing.
Well in the end its just another reason to get it early and not sit back and see how things go, after all while your sitting back your gonna miss out if Nintendo keeps its promise and has an awesome launch.
