Topic: Nintendo is really doing a shameful job with the Wii U Virtual Console.

I question if they really plan to enrich their virtual console lineup soon. It's certainly very questionable at this point, I can only download greats like urban champion so many times.

You would think with how much love Nintendo has showed Urban Champion over the years that they would at least include one of the fighters in Smash Bros

The other thing to add is that 3rd parties are gonna be harder to tempt this time round, simply because the've already done the work once before with little to no return.
Plus it's gonna be harder to grab sales when there are new games being added to the eShop on the same week.
Nintendo could add different consoles this time round to change things up a bit, plus it woulnd't hurt for them to try emulating the FX chip games again.

Club Nintendo Rewards Virtual Console Wii U Titles , Super Mario Lost Levels and Balloon Fight expire January 12th.
Does anyone know if two more titles will be replacing them as rewards? I'd love to redeem for SNES or better NES games.

They will be replaced with different games. They replace the games each month.

I just don't like how everything except Earthbound is just a rerelease of something already on the Wii VC while they act like they're new VC releases. The entire Wii VC is already available on the Wii U, people! Just get the games off of there, then apply the free update and go back to them whenever one of the enhanced Wii U versions is released.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

They say Wii U, but it's still just Wii Shop Channel games. Look at the page description. It says you'll need to go into Wii mode to play them.

First of all, the updates aren't free. It's a dollar and $1.50 for SNES which is a problem for many people.
Second, that's the thing. What else is there to add? Some obscure shmups and platformers? We got freakin' Earthbound finally, and Final Fantasy "lll" is already on their too. Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is Comtra.

SMB3 and A Link to the Past are both on the Wii U eShop, you must just live in a doggeyoopsiepoopie country lol. They've already both been ported so you'll have them very soon.

The Wii's Virtual Console was strong for the first few years.

And then the Well dried up, support was pulled, and now we're even seeing games pulled off the service from time to time rather than added to it. And that was when they weren't adding any features other than a very basic save state function to the games, on a console with far more sales. So please tell me, why should we expect Nintendo to devote a lot of time and effort to the Wii U Virtual Console?

Retro_on_theGo wrote:

The virtual console does not make enough money or even grab enough attention to dedicate a large team to it. That wouldn't even be necessary.

You both essentially said the same thing. The truth is, of course they aren't making as much money as they could, since there aren't enough compelling titles. If they add more games to the lineup, it will draw new fans, and they were purchase more.

They don't need a large team, a pretty small one is all that's necessary.

...and they already have one, last I checked. They're the ones who tweak the emulator for every game, and then test each game to make sure it runs the games the release correctly, then fix whatever happens to be broken. For all we know, that team could consist of two people, but if that's all Nintendo can afford to devote, then I don't see that team growing much any time soon.

i can understand why they didnt, but i really wish that nintendo had just utilized some of the free open source emulators that are out there. people have dedicated years and years to making and improving these for literally nothing other than their love of video games. nintendo could've saved a ton of time and not annoyed so many nerd fans like us by lacking basic features we're used to in the regular emulators. i remember being able to mess around with the layers in snes games like 10 years ago, imagine if nintendo could utilize that for 3d classics.

Nintendo is being deliberately slow with the release of games for the VC IMO……

They want to have something to offer for the Wii U’s lifespan (at least 5 years), and the VC plays an important role as a gap filler when there is a lack of big titles coming out. If you release everything at once, it kinda kills the VC’s impact.

~2013: Burn through the core of the Nintendo published NES titles

~2014, Burn through more of the SNES titles, perhaps release a N64 titles during the fall of 2014.

~2015, Burn through the last remaining Nintendo published SNES titles, focus more on the N64.

~2016, focus on the N64 library, and maybe release a GBA or Gamecube game during the fall of 2016.

~2017, focus on GBA and Gamecube games.

Amended to be more accurate. If you truly want to play retro games, the best way is to go with the original systems. Nintendo will probably always drop the ball when it comes to the VC. I learned that the hard way with the Wii's VC.

I have been pretty happy with the VC content available on Wii. But mostly disappointed with what has come on the 3DS and Wii U or rather the lack of.

I want Nintendo to separate the VC service from being console centric, but rather make them to be internet-centric. By this I mean that you can purchase your retro games from the VC service and you can have them on any current or future Nintendo device you own. Nintendo can even monitize this further by either selling the titles individually or allowing users to subscribe to service that gives them unlimited access to the VC library so long as they remain a member (sort of like PS Plus and to a point like iTunes Match). This will bring a lot of value to their system and network services as whole. However, as of now, the VC simply needs more content and the content needs to be consistent across systems; I personally find releasing SNES games on Wii U but not on 3DS to be a very bad move.

@sonicfan1373 ,I think that’s a bit more advanced than Nintendo can handle / or even comprehend.

Really? That truly sucks. I have both games on my Wii U in English so there is literally no excuse for why they haven't released it in North America yet. Nintendo works in mysterious ways.

Are you trolling?

I'm not sure you know what trolling means lol. I responded saying that the game was already out, so that it must be coming to OP's country very soon. I wasn't aware that it hadn't been released in an entire continent, but then who could expect that lol. The point still stands, the games have already been ported and so it should be a matter of weeks.
