It's the best racing game ever. Online is just more fun than any racer i've played before. Claiming that older Mario Karts are better doesn't make any sense, since this one does everything better. I tried to go back to Double Dash but the horrible controls and overall shallowness compared to wii version stumbled me.
It's not even in my top five Wii games ever let alone best game ever. That said I do like Mario Kart Wii and laugh at people thinking it's the worst in the series. Not that I'm surprised people always prefer older games in a series.
I like it, but I don't think it's the best game ever. I don't see it being better than Ocarina of Time or Super Mario Galaxy 2, and to suggest otherwise is silly. Now, it used to be my favorite Mario Kart, but Mario Kart 3DS will easily trump Mario Kart Wii because it has no more bikes or tricks. That in itself is a huge improvement.
Nintendo tries to make it FAIR but instead they just made it so if you are in first for more than 5 seconds or ahead by a decent margin you get hit by about 100 red and blue shells. Mario Kart Wii is unfortunately the worst Mario Kart, although, that's not to mean it isn't a good game, just bad by the Mario Kart standards.
It definitely has the worst Battle Mode of any Mario Kart, and why couldn't they let us play Grand Prix in multiplayer or give us an All Cup Tour like in Double Dash?
Basically, play MK Wii for single player or online multiplayer, but play MK Double Dash for local multiplayer.

What horrible controls? They're just as good as any traditional Mario Kart controls and pretty much the same as the GameCube controls in the Wii version, which I prefer over the Wiimote motion controls due to the undersensitive turning in those motion controls.
As for shallowness, Double Dash has Grand Prix multiplayer (up to 4 players if you double up), plenty of game modes including All Cup Tour, specific character powerups, a very good Battle Mode, plenty of unlockables, and, whether you like it or not, the two characters per cart mechanic is anything but shallow. Yes, online multiplayer is pretty limited, complicated, and underutilized, but it actually exists unlike 99.9% of GameCube games. No, there are no bikes or tricks, but do those things really make MK Wii that much deeper?

I don't hate the game. It's great for single player or online play (excluding online battle mode). They just screwed up everything related to local multiplayer. (Well, not quite everything, since at least it has GameCube controller support unlike the lazy efforts in that department in many other Wii games.)

Best game ever? Umm no, not by a long shot. Best Mario Kart ever? eh, not really I personally liked double dash more because of it's uniqueness. Oh and "Super Mario kart" was amazing.
