Topic: What's your story with your Wii U?

My story with the Wii U is that I loved the Wii so the Wii U was a no brainer.

I had the NES and SNES but went to Sony when the playstation launched because of FFVII and Sports games. Somewhere around mid way through the PS2 life cycle I sort of lost interest in video games...just didn't have the time with a growing family and other responsibilities. My PS2 became more of a DVD player than a game machine.

The wife, out of the blue picked up a DS lite for herself. I was at the E3 the DS lite was first shown and I hadn't even heard of the DS....I was out of touch with Nintendo. The kids and I quickly took over the DS lite playing New Super Mario Bros and the Wii became a phenomenon shortly after that and we picked one up on an impulse because they were always out of stock and we happened across one while shopping one time. There is a certain charm and just plain fun that I rediscovered on Nintendo that brought me back in to playing video games again. I didn't jump on the 3DS or Wii U at launch but was feeling increasingly left out with out one and eventually got each when I found what I felt was a good deal. I feel like Nintendo fumbled a bit with the Wii U and the 3DS...they were hoping second screen and glasses free 3D would be as successful a gimmic as touch screen gaming and motion controls but they were not. Overall I love my Wii U and have enjoyed the games on the system so far and I even have a back log of games to get to on it. On the Wii I spent my money on the quality Nintendo titles and they didn't disappoint and I know the Wii U will continue to receive these great games and I am looking forward to it.

Got my Wii U on launch day. No lines or anything. Walked in and walked out after buying it.

It has a 16GB stick on it that has worked flawlessly so far.

One day I'd like to play N64 titles on the Gamepad.

I only have 5-6 gigs left and 16 would go a long way for me b/c I pretty much just use it for eShop games. You haven't had problems? Nintendo recommends a drive with a power source.

A Flash drive works okay if you bought quality ones. The 5 dollar thumbdrives have very limited write/rewrites on them and they wear out pretty quickly. Those cheapos are not designed to withstand the console's intensive writes/rewrites. An external hard drive is more suited for that task. I have a old usb powered external hard drive hooked up to my Wii U with a Y cable and it has been working flawlessly. The reason why Nintendo recommends self powered HDDs is because HDDs nowadays do not come with a Y cable. So the USB does not receive enough power from a single Wii U's usb port.

I just wished Nintendo did not cheap out of their USB ports.

Okay. I think I'd be fine under this scenario b/c if I move a game to the USB drive, then that would almost mean that I'm not playing it very much or at all.

Got mine this past Easter and been enjoying it a lot. I kinda held off on it because I like gaming platforms to build a decent library of games before I buy. But yeah, I really enjoy my Wii U for it's retail and eShop titles. Lots of underrated and overlooked games on the platform.

Okay, so I was actually hard pressed to find a Deluxe Wii U at launch. Literally everywhere I went expecting to find a Wii U, I could either find the Basic Set or none at all. It felt like the Wii shortage all over again. So I used the same method I used to find a Day 1 copy of Smash Bros Brawl back when that came out: think of a store no one else would go to.

So I went to K-mart and lucked out, nabbing the last Deluxe Wii U they had, went home, downloaded the hour-plus update, and fired up Nintendoland. I remember being really impressed with the Gamepad and the way it interacted with games like Mario Chase and Luigi's Ghost Mansion.

That winter home from college I got NSMBU for Christmas, a mere couple days after a surgery I had on my tailbone. So since I was pretty much immobilized for the whole Christmas break due to the surgery, my youngest brother and I blasted through NSMBU in one sitting, collecting every single star coin and 100%ing the game.

I sorta regretted finishing it so fast since the Wii U drought lasted until that next August. I had nothing to really do with my Wii U until then, but you better believe I picked up Pikmin the day it came out. I enjoyed my Wii U a lot, and it slowly became my favorite console that I owned.

My Wii U did end up breaking. I'm not sure what the deal was with the sensor on the Wii U, but it progressively got worse and worse at picking up the Gamepad, until it wouldn't detect it from any more than 3 feet away. I had to drop 200 dollars to replace it, since it was just barely out of warranty. I got a Wii U back that had been totally wiped, meaning all my save data from 3D World, Wind Waker, Pikmin 3, NSMBU, and Tropical Freeze was nowhere to be found, and neither was the save data for the Wii Dashboard. Which totally sucked, because I had transferred all my save data from my Wii onto my Wii U, and now it was gone.

Fortunately, I got over my frustration at the Wii U breaking and enjoyed replaying those games where I could. It's a testament to Nintendo's replayability that I enjoyed running through those games just as much the second time around.

Today I've got about 20 VC games on my Wii U, NES Remix I, Child of Light, Shovel Knight, and Nano Assault NEO, along with a long list of retail games (all first party), including Pikmin 3, NSMBU, SM3DW, MK8, DKCTF, and WWHD, and I'm looking forward to picking up Smash Bros this year, possibly Bayonetta, along with Yoshi's Wooly World, Kirby Rainbow Curse, Legend of Zelda, and possibly Splatoon next year. Between my Wii U and 3DS, I've got a ridiculous back catalog of games to play. And I positively love the Wii U and would recommend it to anyone.

Stopped reading after that. Nintendo fan and yet you didn't purchase 3 of their systems. No idea how you can call a system that sells 80mil+ systems a bad system, seems like you were just too young to appreciate what the Wii brought to home console scene.

...so you're just gonna dismiss everything he said based on assumptions? Not gonna try and get more information? Not gonna ask his age, why he skipped those consoles, not even gonna read his reasons, just gonna stop there because he's "obviously not a true fan"? Not even gonna explain what it is the Wii brought to the table, just gonna act like it's common knowledge?

I read about it on Gameinformer, got a Wii U deluxe set for Christmas, and played a mix of Wii and Wii U titles like NSMBU, MH3U, Nintendo Land, and Fifa 13. Then a couple months later (I think in July), I was playing Fifa 13 when something went wrong. I exited the game and turned the power off. Something didn't seem right. When I turned it back on, the gamepad wouldn't connect and the blue light wouldn't stop flashing on the console. It turns out the console had bricked. I hadn't been able to connect the console to my wifi for some reason, so I didn't lose any data. Nintendo fixed it for free within a month and made it possible to connect to the internet. But now my Fifa disc is not able to be read... I got Wind Waker HD for a birthday gift at launch, and I got Mariokart 8 at launch. I just need to transfer the save data from my Wii to my Wii U, but my brother currently has my Wii. I love the console a lot.

@FlaygletheBagel Just curious, when you said replaced, you mean Nintendo replace you with a new console or was the parts that was broken that got replaced? That's why I have a back up copy of all my save files on a USB stick. Just in case something went wrong.

@Hy8ogen At first they probably intended to just replace the parts, but they ended up giving me an entirely new console and Gamepad with my NNID transferred to it. So I could re-download all my games but all my save data was lost.

Wow, I should've totally thought about the USB idea. I'm kicking myself in the head over that one. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'm going to have to start doing that!

.

It was a non-HD system with games that barely looked better than what had been on the Gamecube for years. It afflicted the home console scene with the motion control craze. It's library consisted of a handful of great games that were overshadowed by the looming tidal wave of shovelware that engulfed the system. Nintendo released more useless plastic crap for those godawful Wii remotes than has been seen since the days of the NES.

The N64 was obviously a better system, but it's also a system with a lackluster library and controller.

I can't fault the Cube, though. That was a pretty cool game system. Not as good as the PS2, obviously, but it was, and still is, a respectable console.

By the way, I owned the N64 in the past, still own my Cube, and have had constant access to a Wii for the majority of its life cycle. Still own a top-loading NES, along with 40+ games for it. Only Nintendo consoles I've never owned or had constant access to were the SNES (yes, I'm aware I missed out on a lot as a kid) and Virtual Boy.

@Ralizah I always wanted a N64 and GC, but unfortunately those systems were unavailable in my country and I cannot to afford to import game systems. I blame the rampaging game piracy in the early 2000s. I really hope the Wii U's VC will include N64 and GC games so I can play back the good stuff that I missed!

As for the Wii, I hate it for many reasons and you have covered most of it already. One of the main reason why I hated the Wii so much is that the Wii Mote was the primary controller. Having the wii mote as the primary controller just threw me off. My cousin had a Wii and I tried it out, I remember we were playing Rampage 2 and the experience was just downright awful. Although I do regret missing out on Xenoblade Chronicles and Mario Galaxy games.

You don't have to own every single product a company releases in order to enjoy their products. You don't even need to do that to call yourself a fan of that company. I mean I got the Wii U on day 1, you have to have been a fan to do that, and I never owned a NES, N64, GC or GBA. The Gamecube in particular I saw demo kiosks back in the day featuring Super Mario Sunshine and Double Dash. I had absolutely no interest in getting it.

Now for me what got me back onto the Nintendo fanboy train was three fold:
1. A friend who had Brain Training on DS (was actually a pretty cool tech demo in its day)
2. The DS Lite release soon after and this video
3. The Super Mario Galaxy portion of the Wii intro trailer at E3 2006

Bought the basic set in March 2013 (all I had the money for and back in those days the basic set was 300) with my birthday money bought nintendo land with it and about once every 3 months a game worth getting came out. But ever since 3D world were getting great Wii U much more frequently. I regret buying at the time due to the price and lack of games but I'm glad I have it now with the great games out and coming out soon.

Have bought every Nintendo console since the SNES and never regretted it (Gamecube onwards at launch), so got the Wii U when launched despite an uninspiring launch selection trusting Nintendo would deliver the goods, am a happy Wii U owner at this point

I got my home Wii U system at launch and love playing coop games with my wife (NSMBU, DKTF, Pikmin 3, SM3DW, MK8, Rayman Legends). I also LOVE the off screen gameplay because we share 1 television, so I can game while she is working out without disrupting her. I also have logged over 180 hours on Netflix by watching TV shows while eating breakfast (I am a teacher and get up at 5 am so I need to be very quiet) and together.

I got a refurbished Wii U in Feb 2014 for $200 for my afterschool videogame/Lego league club (I teach 7th/8th graders STEM class). We meet 1-2 times a week and the kids can play Wii U in my room while I work. The kids love multiplayer games (NintendoLand, SM3DW, MK8 and I downloaded Pikmin 3 and NSMBU with my two copies of MK8) and the chaos that comes with kids "cooperating" (which ends up them trolling each other) is hilarious and has really shown that the Wii U is the best local multiplayer system EVER created.

Things got better after the 6th generation. Shops started carrying genuine games and original consoles for the 7th gen. Which is why the Wii was available. I live in Canada now so I got my Wii U here. However I can confirm Wii U is also available in my home country because my friends back there also got Wii Us and I think the shop sells North American machines. One of my cousin has been showing interested in the Wii U after I showed him the Fatal Frame Wii U trailer. XD

Ralizah: Thanks for the kind words! I enjoy having the kids play cooperative games and using games educationally (when I can fit it into the curriculum... i.e., minecraft, etc..). I grew up with videogames, so I understand they can be used to form bonds and strengthen relationships (especially Nintendo family coop nights!) because you are interacting and solving puzzles together. This is the reason I love the Wii U so much - it is the ultimate couch coop system ever created!

I can also appreciate the downside of videogames (too much screen time and not enough exercise or time spent on HW) and there are games that kids should not be playing (COD, GTA) because they are violent and parents should set limits IMO (as a professional educator).

I bought my Wii U shortly after the announcements of the Xbox One and PS4. Microsoft had just gone on their "We hate gamers" tour touting all the anti-consumer DRM to be included in the console, and still had not fixed the issue with Xbox Gold being required for Netflix. Sony just seemed to be too much like the Xbox in terms of family friendly stuff, so I sold the Xbox and games to purchase the Wii U.

I've not regretted the change, nor would I go back to the Xbox world now.
