I love how the eighth generation of gaming has turned everyone into a marketing and industry expert...
This isn't exactly something new to this generation
It isn't new, but it's obvious that sales have become a bigger topic than it ever has been.
I think it is because of the popularity of indies and how open they were about the money side of game making last generation that more people understand the money side now.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Nintendo would need a top 3rd party to jump over to the Wii U; some kind of blockbuster acquisition. They would need the next GTA to come to Nintendo with exclusive content. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until Nintendo comes up with a new gaming craze, and who knows how long that is going to take.

That's part of it, but I think more of it has to do with Dreamcast, GameCube, and PS3. Those are the consoles that took the biggest toll on their companies; since Atari was around. People just want some indication that their console of choice is right overall, and they look at sales, even though that isn't the place to look. I've had people tell me that iPhone and PS2 are/were worth more than the competitions' machine, based solely on how well it is selling. That misses the point entirely, but it is also a concern of said folks.

Super Mario 3D World will make this the best selling console of the generation! People will flock to the Wii U when Mario Kart 8 releases! No one will care about Sony or Microsoft when Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U launches!
Uh, err... The Legend of Zelda will make you all regret not buying a Wii U!
My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.
A game that Nintendo will need to come back that's not Smash? Sounds like you're asking for the new Zelda to come out early.
Nope not that either. I want Nintendo to come out strong this Holiday season. But knowing that's not going to happen because of what happened today. I want people to buy the Wii U not only for Smash bros. but for the console.

what happened today that is going to kill Wii U sales?

Yup. People need to want the actual console, too. Software may sell hardware, but without hardware, you wouldn't even be able to sell said software in the first place. That should be a given, but I think people have grown too fond of being able to say Nintendo will never make an impact on the market anymore. Their impact may be different than it used to be, but Wii U existing at all is a HUGE impact.
There just needs to be more games, more features/support, etc. As long as they keep improving in whichever direction, it will draw more people in than if they did nothing at all.
@DefHalen
I think he is refering to the Xbox One holiday price cut.

I agree. I think once Smash is out there Nintendo is in for another major software drought, just like the first year of the Wii U's lifecycle. We'll have our Smash, our Mario Kart, and two Mario platformers (3 if you count the Luigi DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U); what else is there on the horizon that the core Nintendo gamer cares about?? Zelda is still a long ways off. We know next to nothing about Yoshi's Wooly World and that Star Fox game, and Nintendo seems to forget that F-Zero and Metroid even exist.
I know we're all going to be happy with Mario Kart and Smash finally being in HD, but I'm not seeing much else to get excited about besides Amiibo integration into games that we already own. Whoopie do.
My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."
But they need to do something that we get people tempted to buy it. I see people all the time walk by the Wii U station and go straight to Xbox or PS4 and the 3DS section...
This is a pretty meaningless measure. You'll only remember what you want to remember, the sample size is tiny and it is heavily dependent on how the shop is setup. I know for example that one shop where they have two PS4s and two XBOnes at the back with games running? People walk right past the Wii U section to play some of the new games that are out. Another shop I know of has a Wii U demo station right up the front and I've seen plenty of people who stop what they're doing and play it without even bothering to go down to the PS4/XBOne games behind it. Or another shop where I believe they have just an XBOne demo thing where I generally just see people casually browsing the isles with no real direction.
Also the Wii U demo station? It has a whole bunch of demos for most of the games. However most of the time I seem to see people playing New SMB U. Again, I think people are overthinking this. The Wii U needs games, Smash is arguably one of the biggest games. So is Kart. Kart gave it a bit of a sales bum, Smash will do the same. Stop being so worked up about it because frankly who cares? Just enjoy your games.
I always see people caring about Wii U, in my area. There's always someone playing the Wii U at the store, from my experience. If anything, I see more people browsing Nintendo aisles, because 3DS makes up a big chuck of the gaming section, which usually includes a Wii U section.
People at GameStop are different, though. Generally, they either care about Microsoft or Sony machines, but there's a hardcore Nintendo fan there every once in a while, and I haven't really seen anybody be a complete d-bag about this sort of subject since last generation, when I was still in high school.
Also, Wii U sold out in my area when it launched, and I've seen ton of Mario, Pokemon, Hyrule Warriors, Smash Bros. commercials. The 3rd parties are the ones that seriously never advertise(d) anything for Wii U.
I love how the eighth generation of gaming has turned everyone into a marketing and industry expert...
Also, the idea that only experts can give rational ideas for something based on our opinion as humans is incredibly dangerous and elitist. Like imagine if we did that with Politics? Candidates and Parties would make decisions and we'd just passively accept that. Imagine if we did that with fashion design? We just passively accepted clothes, and you only had a right to comment if you were a designer.
There are subjects where, for the most part, experts dominate. For example hard sciences really aren't based on human opinion. There are a set of facts and methods that you either do or don't understand. But that's not what we are really talking about.
Firstly, I tend to think there is an enormous difference between how well the Wii U sells and which political parties we should vote into power. Secondly, I more made this comment because the forums have recently been completely inundated with inane posts about what we should do to make the Wii U sell better. My feeling is that, if you think your idea is that glorious, e-mail Nintendo and tell them about it. At the very least, not every single idea someone has about what will better the Wii U's fortunes needs its own thread.
