Topic: Nintendo Needs A Come-Back -- Not Just Smash Bros. But Something Big.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is and I can't really see what you're saying. Is the XBOne now as cheap as the Wii U in the US? Because here, even with the new Kinect-less SKU and the various bundles, the Wii U is still a good $100 cheaper. And that's with the cheaper Wii U SKU being nowhere to be seen thus partially disproving the notion that the sales were about pricing rather than content.

As for what they should do that's "big". Honestly I don't think bundles and fancy SKUs move as many units as people might want to think. I'm sure they push a few but I don't think that's the most important thing. You need content first and a good bundle is simply a way of making people think they're getting a good deal and maybe pushing them over the line. Pricing definitely matters but again, content is king. When I opened this thread I assumed it would be about someone asking for a big new game ontop of Smash to push them over the edge. I'm surprised the "something big" idea is a coat of paint and a decent valued bundle. Because they've been doing that already... since day 1...

edit:
and oh, great, "more marketing". You guys are full of original and unique ideas. What an enlightening thread.....

I love how the eighth generation of gaming has turned everyone into a marketing and industry expert...

Two column proof showing why my idea would work.
1. Fact: Consumers aren't buying the Wii U | Reason: I haven't bought one yet
2. Fact: Consumers would buy it if it were $10 | Reason: I would buy one for $10
3. Fact: Consumers like Metroid Prime. | Reason: I like Metroid Prime.
Solution: Nintendo should offer for the Wii U for $10 and bundle an HD remaster of Metroid Prime. Give me a job Nintendo.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

You actually can find someone willing to actually pay and not be payed for gettting it?

YES FUN GAME!!! But that just next year

well Smash Bros is still a big deal but also this year we have seen Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart 8, with Captain Toad coming later. Lots of fun to be had there.

But they need to do something that we get people tempted to buy it. I see people all the time walk by the Wii U station and go straight to Xbox or PS4 and the 3DS section...

That has more to do with marketing. These games are big games for the system, Nintendo just needs to convince people they will enjoy these games. Marketing is key, without it Nintendo will not be able to grow. I think they should start marketing towards teens, that way they can keep their image of "its for everyone" while also making it a little more mature. But that is just my idea where I bet plenty of people will disagree. The problem is Nintendo has games people want, people just don't know they want them yet.

I would say another year like last year's e3, and they will have made a perfect comeback. For now, at least there are some worthwhile games in addition to smash for the wii u.

What do you expect when sales are becoming more and more crucial in whether or not certain games get made?

Than logically people don't want those games right.

Honestly its hard to say what Nintendo should do. They actually do pretty good marketing the probelm is that not only is most of it really aimed at their fanbase, but for the most part they will go on radio silence for months on end. Microsoft and Sony tend to have updates to games all the time and both run news blogs that keep people up to date.

Part of the reason why Xbox and Playstation seem to have so much coverage is that they have 3rd Party support which Wii U doesn't.

That also goes back to being a problem Nintendo brought upon themselves. I'd also say no real new core facing IP or older franchise brought back doesn't really help. Right now the eye is on Smash Brothers and Mario Kartin the Nintendo camp, but just that since tehy're a known quantity. But if you look at the other two systems the games getting the bulk of screen time and being talked about are Watch_dogs, Destiny, Sunset Overdrive and Bloodborne all of which are new Ip. I know Nintendo fans tend to hate the new IP argument but it must say something that two of the most anticpated games on Nintendo's platform are both pretty new IP in Splatoon and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Plus look how Tomadachi life and Bravely Default did earlier this year.

Wonderful 101 didn't do very well. A lot of the 3rd Party problems that Nintendo has was brought on by 3rd Party. 3rd party didn't give Nintendo a fair chance (probably because Nintendo wasn't willing to pay them for certain things) and in return they didn't sell well. They didn't sell well so they supported the system less, which hurt their sales more. It is a self fulfilling prophecy. Ubisoft gave the Wii U the best chance with games like Rayman Legends, ZombiU, and Child of Light but those weren't their main series, Ubisoft main series (Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell) didn't do well so they cut support for the Wii U. Each time 3rd Parties cut support for Wii U people went to other systems to get the "full support" for games they wanted. But this is getting off topic.

I think Nintendo needs to be more open about what their system and games offer people.

The Nintendo fans I know in real life tend not to play games that aren't in what they considered an "established franchise". I was talking to a friend of mine who exclusively plays Nintendo about Kid Icarus: Uprising and Fire Emblem: Awakening, and he dismissed both of them saying he doesn't play games that aren't long lasting Nintendo franchises. I laughed to myself because they're both pretty old series, but then it dawned on me how many games he misses when I can count the number of series he's played on one hand.

There's a little known game called Bayonetta 2. You've probably never heard of it, because its so good that anyone who plays it loses all recollection of playing it. If that doesn't show a big change, I don't know what does.

A game that Nintendo will need to come back that's not Smash? Sounds like you're asking for the new Zelda to come out early.
