Also, people seriously understate how awesome off-screen play is. Not all of us have total control over the TV, and heck, sometimes, you just wanna go lie down without dropping the game. Off-screen play is one of this system's best features, IMO.
Mario Kart is DEFINITELY NOT 1080p, The screenshots show a native 720p game with basic AA.
Then having a fifth player with their own screen is even more out of the question. If it was running at 1080p they would have had to render an extra 480p screen ontop of the four 540p 'screens' on the TV. If it's 720p then they're doing four 360p screens and a fifth at 480p. If they could manage to squeeze 30fps from four 540p then maybe they could stretch it out for one more lower resolution screen. If they're only managing those four screens at 360p? 480p is a much higher hurdle.

It's kind of justified, because as nice as Off-TV play is, it's not a gameplay changer, which is what people are looking for. Sure, you can take your console game off the TV if you need to, but there's no gameplay mechanic that works off that concept, you play it the same either way.
I don't think Mario Kart 8 is the right franchise to show off gameplay potential, though.
@Bolt_Strike True. I just don't feel like a feature has to affect the game to be awesome. In fact, a lot of the best features are more focused on how you interact withthe game, and not how the game, itself, plays. But maybe that's just me.
with a game like this the 80 hour pro controller will serve me alot better than the gamepad. just being honest, really the only games i used the gamepad with were NFS: Most Wanted. and Assassins Creed 4..
The way I played Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7 I'll probably use the GamePad more. Most of the time I'll just boot it up for 20mins or so and play a few rounds online. So turning on the TV will be an extra and unnecessary hassle

"Nintendo has also stated that the game will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second in single-player mdoe, but only 30 frames per second in multiplayer (we assume split screen, we’ll ask about online)." http://metro.co.uk/2014/04/03/new-mario-kart-8-trailer-shows-...
To be fair I actually like the touch because it saves the battery life on the gamepad and DKTF isn't a game you are going to need a second screen. Either off screen play or save the battery life during tv play.
I'm so disappointed in this and completely agree this to me shows that Nintendo themselves have no idea what to do with the gamepad and was a terrible idea. I think the gamepad should have been sold as an accessory now
Pikmin 3 used the Gamepad pretty well. So did Nintendoland and Wii U Party. But IMO, the best example in Nintendo's own games would be Wii U Sports Golf - it feels like you're actually playing golf (the Gamepad provides an great accuracy and realism to the shots). Zelda: Wind Waker's use of the Gamepad was subtle but nice.
I feel Nintendo's pains with modern Nintendo fans: screwed if you do; screwed if you don't.
1. First it's "Nintendo NEEDS to use the Gamepad, they need to use its features and show it off!". Several games make use of the Gamepad's features in early games, including Nintendo's own. Nintendo Land, NSMBU, and Pikmin 3 all make decent use of the Gamepad.
2. Then it's "Nintendo NEEDS to get rid of the Gamepad, I don't want to be forced to use it". SM3DW reduces Gamepad usage requirement, and DKC:TF doesn't use it at all for anything other than off-TV play. Nintendo puts Mario Kart 8 somewhere in the middle, using the Gamepad for non-integral features. The complaint cycle returns to step 1.

and Zelda: WW, and Game & Wario, and Wii Fit U, and Wii Party U, and Lego City, and the Olympics game, and The Wonderful 101, and Sports Club, and so forth.
It was used many times by Nintendo.

Exactly. People have no clue as to what they want. Oh, and their also giant hypocrites apparently.
Anyway, I liked the little mini map display on the bottom screen in MK DS and MK7. Shows you who is where and what item they have. Pretty useful.

it's fine for Mario Kart, and I can't blame Nintendo for not risking their cash cow with risky ideas (well I can, but not for this type of risky idea at least)
