Topic: Is the Wii U essentially worthless the Switch has better versions of its library

Long story short the sound went on my Wii U so I sold all my Games except my Project Zero Maiden of the Black Water Box set which the intention of buying another console as I thought it’s the only way I could still play Maiden.

With Maiden now on the Switch and PS4 what exclusive does the Wii U have?

Starfox with its horrible tablet controls

Devils Third it’s not great and the boss Jane Doe seems impossible I spent 3 hours straight trying to beat her. People like it as it’s a violent Nintendo game whilst Snes platform game King of Demons was far more violent and sexual.

Zombie U A game I regularly see in charity shops for £1

All the other Nintendo first party games have superior versions on the Switch. What exclusive does that leave Lego Movie, Rodia the Sky Soldier, Monsters High and a Darksider 2 box set you can only buy in one country

Only really of interest for collectors due to the ease of getting a mostly complete set of games

There’s nothing on the telly except a nice vase

@Shadow_Dancer Xenoblade X is great. Zombi U is good. It's the best way to play Wii games. That's the reason I've still got mine.

@Shadow_Dancer Yes. It's worthless. Send it to me and I won't charge you for disposal.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

Xenoblade X, the two Zelda HD games, Yoshi’s Wooly World if you don’t have the 3ds version, Game and Wario, NES Remix (if you don’t have the port) and Nintendo Land are good first party reasons to keep the system. I have a few 3rd party games (and it replaces my Wii) that make it worth it for me plus I prefer the gamepad. However if you don’t care about those games or BC/VC, Switch has you covered.

Edit: also wii fit for wiiu and wii sports club.

Nintendo Land is always a game my family goes back to, and I can't see it ever getting ported due to the asymmetrical multiplayer between the gamepad and Wii remotes. Xenoblade Chronicles X is one that I own and can't wait to play someday. Virtual console would be another reason to keep the Wii U hooked up.

The Wii U's library was never good, most of its "good" games were overrated level pack sequels that brought nothing new to the table. The Switch's library is what the Wii U's should've been, the Wii U rarely had that "Wow" sort of game that impressed me with its scale and creativity (there were some here and there like Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Maker, but not enough to get me to purchase an entire console). I was waiting its whole life for it to get games like BotW, Mario Odyssey, and Metroid Prime 4 and those kinds of games never really came (or in BotW's case, didn't come soon enough), instead they just wanted to make generic sequels of Wii/3DS games and then the Switch comes out of the gate with those kinds of experiences. The Switch porting everything but the kitchen sink from the Wii U is the last nail in the coffin for the Wii U, but it's not like what the Wii U offered was that worth it to begin with.

Probably the biggest selling point of the Wii U now is the access to games on various consoles before it. Wii U had arguably the best back-catalogue of any Nintendo console, with virtual console for NES, SNES, N64, GBA and DS, as well as the ability to play Wii games.

Personally? I'd rather not touch my Wii U again. The Switch is too much of an upgrade for me, and I find the Wii U to be too slow and the controls too clunky in 2021.

I mean, I still think it has the best version of Rayman Legends, one of the best platformers I've ever played, and the Wii U is the only reason to play ZombiU. There's a few worthwhile things left on it and a few more that are best on it. But it probably would've had more if Nintendo had ever genuinely cared about the Wii U's gimmicks.

And to be fair, its only worthless if you didn't already buy into the Wii U at the time. It's still worth something considering the alternative is paying full price for games I already own.

The best use for the Wii U these days is to hack it. That way you not only have its native library and a power user's Wii, but it'll also play GameCube games and output in HD. You can additionally emulate all prior home systems (N64 is rather hit and miss but the Switch seems to have its own issues there) as well as the handhelds up to the DS.

In terms of exclusive games, there aren't really that many compelling ones left. Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush and Affordable Space Adventures haven't been mentioned yet and they make such heavy use of the touchpad that they're unlikely to ever get ported. Then again, they're just fun games and not likely to set anyone's world alight.

I get the impression that for the last couple of years of the Wii U's commercial life, almost everything was made with an eye towards an eventual port to the Switch. Sure, Star Fox Zero and Xenoblade X came out during that period but they'd both spent a long time in development and were presumably long committed to using its features. For the other big releases though it was only ever a matter of time.

At risk of setting people off again for me the Wii U doesn't even have this over the Switch anymore. The VC service on the Wii U was never that great in terms of emulation quality and the only reason it beat out the Wii VC was the GamePad. I LOVED playing VC games without the TV. But the Switch doesn't have the compression you had on the Wii U GamePad so it wins there.

To make things worse for the Wii U at this point the only two games I had on the Wii U VC that aren't on (or scheduled) for NSO are Advance Wars and Earthbound. And I have Earthbound on my SNES Mini while Advance Wars is getting a remaster on Switch. So for me, given I'm into NSO and am not going to dip into VC again, the Switch has pretty much entirely replaced the Wii U here

For me, as someone who milked the Wii U more than most, there are only a handful of things the Wii U still has. It's still the best way to play Wii games IMO. Proper hardware beats emulation and the Wii U has a HDMI port which the Wii lacks. There are also a few titles that never made their way to Switch I got and really enjoyed like NES Remix, Nintendo Land & Wii Sports. Also between Wii/Wii U the Switch is still missing Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Galaxy 2 and the Metroid Prime Trilogy... which is a huge gap

With that said, other than giving Wii Sports Club another spin once and a couple of rounds of Nintendo Land? I haven't got my Wii U out of the box at all since the Switch launched.

In terms of Wii U games, it is running out of games that aren't on the Switch (and I think games like the Zelda HD remasters and XCX will eventually come to Switch) but with Nintendo's absolutely awful handling of retro content on Switch (shown even further by the infamous handling of N64 games on NSO) the Wii U will probably still be the best place to play retro games until Nintendo shuts down the Wii U eshop.

I hope Nintendo will put virtual console on Switch or next console before shutting down Wii U eShop. I’m also worried about my hard drive that some of the VC games are stored on will break after the eShop is closed.

@skywake I am generally pleased with what I have on NSO with games like Super Metroid and the Fire Emblem games on the Japanese version.
But I will say that Wii U does have a couple things over it with games that are unlikely to be easily put into the Switch such as DS VC and Wii (although we have seen Skyward Sword remastered and Galaxy was also re-released)
But I did only get Shadow Dragon from DS VC on my Wii U.

Aside from virtual console games not yet available and Xenoblade X, I mostly just take it out for multiplayer. Games like NintendoLand, Wii Party U and a few others are a lot of fun with friends.

Yeah, I wouldn't exactly recommend buying a Wii U these days, but if you already own one there's quite a few games worth playing on it. The second screen is a really fun idea; I know not everyone likes it but I still enjoy going back to it and it's a shame it didn't get more games that lived up to its potential.

Ahem....
I have 16 Wii U games to play and still try to build until 20 - 25 Wii U games.
Definitely a hidden gem of Nintendo machine.
