Topic: Is the Wii U a suitable platform for RTS games?

One thing that I really have missed in the last gen of gaming was the presence of decent RTS or turn based strategy games. It just seems to me that the last gen of consoles really killed that genre. During the days of the Xbox, NGC and PS2 you could still pick them up on PC - heck there was a huge selection of them, but last gen you (well me at least) had to really struggle to find one. Sure there were a few out there Sword of the Stars, Star Craft etc but it just really seemed that they were no longer as prevalent and quality titles were a lot harder to come by.

I understand that as more players switched to consoles the PC demographic was no longer as large as it used to be, and as consoles were for most part ill suited for an RTS it is really no wonder that the genres presence started to dwindle. However with the Wii U that reasoning no longer holds the same truths. The Wii U with its touch screen would make an excellent control scheme for an RTS game. Imagine the following;

RS/LS - panning around the screen*
RS/LS - Zooming in and out*
Touch Screen - selector/pointer
Bumpers and triggers - For left/right mouse buttons
D Pad and A B X Y buttons - various commands
*RS/LS could be swappable for southpaws

Now with the above configuration in mind how would you the typical Wii U owner feel if you were to play an RTS on the Wii U? Would it be comfortable enough? Would there be enough options for controlling your stuff? Would the controls be responsive enough?

I am sure that some of you might be wondering why I am asking this question - Well the answer is simple. Instead of asking game companies for X1/PS4 ports why arent we asking PC devs to make games on the Wii U? Pure Chess has already shown that cross platform multiplayer is possible meaning that Wii U players could effectively play RTS games like starcraft and have full access to the entire online community.

In my mind its a win win situation, if the developer releases an RTS on a console then they are tapping into an unexploited market right there. They wont have to worry about piracy as much as the newer Nintendo systems (not talking about the Wii and Ds) seem to be pretty secure. On the other hand Wii U owners get to play games that wouldnt normally be available on a console thus providing further variety. I dont know about you guys but I'd much rather have games like ground control, star craft or mech commander to play then KH3 or Final Fantasy. How bout you?

I think the WiiU might be perfect for an assimetric RTS game the players with the wii remotes being independent mercenary units(like an action RPG) and the Gamepad player as the strategist! imagine how amazing it would be!!!!!!!

goodbyes are a sad part of life but for every end there's a new beggining so one must never stop looking forward to the next dawn

That would be pretty cool - local and online multiplayer!
I always hear that devs are open to ideas from fans, I wonder how you would go about pitching the idea to them?

Why not, my laptop runs WoW or TOR well enough. Why not bring it to the U, it certainly has better specs then my laptop and has control scheme thats as good as a mouse.

Maybe we should start a petition to get WoW and Starcraft on the U.

In terms of control mechanics, the Wii U is pretty much the best non-PC thing to make an RTS around.

Best thread ever

I personally thought Diablo 3 made most sense on Wii U over the other consoles. But still best on PC just like RTS.

basically this. As someone with a very meh PC, I don't really get into PC gaming much anymore so I've missed on basically the entire RTS genre unless you count Pikmin and LKS(I did briefly play Age of Mythology and a Warhammer game a looong time ago, but that's about it). And even the turn based stuff like X-Com, I'd only be interested in on Wii U because of that.

Though I'm glad they aren't coming out right now as I've played a bizarre amount of strategy games in the past couple of years for someone terrible at them.

Yeah WoW on the Wii U thats a joke. There is no way that the Wii U can handle a full size 25 man raid. Not only that but the amount of buttons you need for rotations and such just can't be done on the Wii U. Thats all I want is my healer th accidental bump the touch screen the wrong way and cause a wipe. Yeah not going to happen.

1st if your healer pushes the wrong button on the Keyboard you have the same problem so as long as the touch screen is used well it is not an issue.

2nd who is to say the Wii U couldn't handle anything amd everything WoW does on less power PCs. Even if you had to cut up some places with so.e loading screens to ease power useage.

Back onto the topic. The touchscreen allows for many things to be possible that weren't before because of the limits of past controllers. I would love to see a RTS or MMO done well on Wii U. Start begging indie developers because bigger conpanies won't take the chance.

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Tasuki your being kinda short sighted here, both WoW and ToR have run on my laptop with less grunt then the Wii U and I've played both on an xbox controller mapped to keyboard with something like Xpadder - no problems. With an Xbox controller I had to set the bumpers to be alt and shift respectively but the Game Pad eliminates this need. The action icons could be placed on the bottom and sides of the touch screen giving you ll the slots you would effectively need. As for 25 man raid - well not even my laptop can really handle that without complaining.

Just because you cannot imagine something does not mean its a joke.

So how would one go about setting up one of those online petitions and where would you send it? I sent an email off to the guys who did Sins of a Solar Empire as I remember that one being decent - still no response tho. This thing needs to happen but it requires voices - DefHalan is right though the big devs wont take a chance, they dont take a chance on anything anymore. Small PC devs and Indies are the way to go and a lot of noise on MiiVerse for it.

Well how do you think I feel? =P

Seriously though this is something that I feel needs to go viral - once that happens its only a matter of time. You guys on twitter who shadow game devs please please please keep bringing this up. I wouldnt doubt that they havent even considered it.

Here are some pro's for developing an RTS on the Wii U

1 Fixed architecture and system requirements mean that they dont have to worry about 1000 different hardware configurations
2 Eshop go digital if they dont have the capital to print physical copies
3 Reduced Piracy due to the fact that the Wii U and 3DS have been pretty secure at resisting hacking attempts
4 Starved market - There has been very few attempts at a RTS games on consoles and not everyone has a gaming PC they are expensive
5 Wii U Gamepad gives you parity with a mouse
6 Unity tools are being sponsored by Nintendo if they want to go cheap
7 Wii U dev kits are cheap
8 Nothing ventured nothing gained

We need to get on their cases (politely) and ask them to do it. We also need to get onto MiiVerse and bug Reggie and Iwata to consider sourcing out a 3rd party for it. We also need to get on every game site out there and talk about it.

Who's with me on this?

Yeah ur totally right on this we got to annoy them as much as possible right away, maybe an indie gets some hearing on this. But i cant start right away since i am at work XD. So go forth my fellow brothers and sisters in mind and make the word spread.

Btw which developer would u like to do it the most? I think shin'en would do good work in my opinion

Edit: i have send them an e-mail just now, lets see if they react or how they react.

RTS for Wii U will be great but then again RTS for the WIi also works with the Pointer like a mouse.

Yeah it could had worked on wii but because this genre is really having it hard on consoles our only hope will be indie eshop titles. Where they can put em up with no production cost and when they make minus they at least dont sit on a shelf on disc but just on the development cost.
But this is with every game i guess but rts is special for consoles..
