Topic: Getting a Wii U next week, anything I should know?

Going to pick up a Wii U and Mario Kart 8. I'm mostly curious if I'm going to need anything like a screen-protector for the Gamepad in case it scratches easy, and if so which is the best one to buy. Also any other recommendations of things I should get/know would be awesome, thanks!!!

I've had my Wii U for more than a year now and never had a screen protector on and my screen is still pristine. I just don't like the feel of another layer getting in the way of my full enjoyment.

I've had my Wii U for a year and a half without a screen protector on the gamepad and it's still fine, granted since it doesn't leave the room there's not much light shining on it to notice. If you're worried about scratches I say just get one, a Nintendo licensed brand is probably best (check for the seal of quality).

I'm pretty okay.

You should get a Silicone Jacket for your gamepad, cause it protects the controller from getting scratches or breaking when you accidentally drop it.It comes in three colors black, blue, red and pink.I have one and i love it. Or you can buy a mario theme hard cover your choice. But now you have a lot of games that came out and are coming out to entertain you,for a long time.

I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations & Watch Dogs 2

as long as you dont join the crybaby coalition of some wii u owners youll be alright. its like a gang, they will ask you to join in their misery but all you have to do is just say no.

1. Screen protector at the very least.
2. Pikmin 3
3. Scram Kitty
4. GBA VC

That is all.

No need for a jacket, see the drop tests on youtube, absolutely no damage! Now you can watch your wallet I don't think you need anything other than some good games. I would highly recommend Nintendo Land. It comes with the default bundle and I can see why! I bought the Mario Kart bundle and I downloaded Nintendo Land as my free game during the promotion. Best decision I've ever made Great fun and really good to play with family

Also, Super Mario 3D World is an essential. Pikmin 3 was alright but I still prefer Pikmin 2 personally. New Super Mario Bros U has some much better level design than previous games but it still kinda is more of the same and the squirrel power is a little tricky to use. The next two games I'm getting are Donkey Kong Country and Zelda Wind Waker but I can't speak for them yet as I don't yet have them. Then.. when they're released, Bayonetta 2 (which comes with the first game, TWO IN ONE) and Super Smash Bros.

In priority order:
Nintendo Land (should be able to get this cheap!)
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (maybe before Pikmin, I haven't yet played it)
New Super Mario Bros U
Wind Waker HD (because I've already finished Wind Waker on the gamecube)

I vote for the silicon case, especially if u r gonna go for the black console, u won t see all the fingerprints, and an extra protection to the gamepad is not so bad, we don t wanna buy a new one in future, do we?

I would suggest you an improved battery for the gamepad too, especially if ur plugs are far away from ur couch (the recharge cable is not too long).

Maybe in the close future an hard disk will be a good purchase, if u wanna go digital download...

But after all, welcome in da club! You ll have a lot of fun with it

Wow, these reponses have been really helpful. Thanks guys!!

Also what's the deal with the pro controller? Can I use it for the all main Wii U games instead of the gamepad? (Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong and Mario Kart?) Is that something I should invest in as well?

Oh one more final question guys, I will probably have to use a wired connected because my Wi-Fi isn't very good, can someone recommend a Ethernet port to attach to my Wii U

Any ethernet adapter meant for Wii or Wii U will be fine. I bought an off brand for around $3 on Amazon for my Wii years ago and it's been great. The pro controller is pretty sweet and can usually be used whenever you want. It definitely works for Mario Kart and Donkey Kong. It also works for for Mario 3D World but there are some levels (not many) you MUST use the gamepad for...but it's pretty easy to switch if you have to. Some games REQUIRE the gamepad though (like ZombiU) so it's up to you if you want to invest in the pro controller. IMO, the best all around controller I've ever used. The Xbox 360 had a better shape and better triggers, but the D-pad of the Wii U Pro is phenomenal. I guess that depends on opinion though. Here's my list to compare just in case you might disagree.

Modern game controllers:

1) Wii U Pro
2) Xbox 360
3) Gamecube
4) Wii Pro
5) PS3/PS4

I know I'll get flak for placing Playstation controllers on the bottom, but I hate 'em. Buttons are too flat, d-pad is second worst (just above 360), triggers suck, sticks are too close together, shape make it feel like my hands are huge...ugh.

Oh, and Wonderful 101 is amazing if you're into crazy-theme beat-em ups.

No need for a screen protector...

No need for a jacket...

However, if you live in the United States, import the high capacity Gamepad battery from Europe.

we r here to help (not only to get excited for new games or complaining for no wiiU version of games we like...)

On the pro controller i would say yes, get it, it s great, comfortable and a must if u plan to play with someone else...but consider that many games are compatible with wii remote and nunchuck (like wii sports club, wii party u, all the mario games) and with the classic controller from wii... Each game indicates which controllers are supported on the back of the case or in the e shop page...

If u can afford it, get it, is very good...

Regarding the internet connection, unfortunately i don t know, but if u google a bit, u r gonna find what u need, both for ethernet and firewall setup...

Dual Shock 4 is the best controller on the market IMO, and the fact that you bundled the DS3 to the DS4 doesn't really make sense to me, considering the DS4 is an substantial improvement. The Wii U pro controller is still very nice though, and it has the best d-pad there is.

Ah, for the battery, i got a not original one for 10 $, is lithium, and i passed from 3 hours and a half (the original) to 6 hours....

Another great thing of the pro controller is that u can charge it through usb and then forget aboit, the charge stand for 60 hoirs at least...

I just got one a couple days ago, and although I probably didn't need a screen protector, I figured I should get one to be safe, and not sorry. Remember, you can play Wii games, too, and check out the eShop, you might find something cool that you like there.

What kind of games do you like?

Atari 2600, Commodore 64/128, Sega Genesis, 32X, Sega CD, PC, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Wii, PSP, DSi, PS3, 3DSXL, WiiU

Stylus use demands a protector if you care at all for a pristine display in five years.

@Scapetti I think you're taking to the wrong guy, because i had my wiiu for a long time. And i have every game that you mention is in my game library. And i think you read my comment wrong because, you wrote many things to try to get me to buy a wiiu. But i already have a wiiu, so i don't understand your comment.

Accessories are nice, but the primordial investment is a reliable ~500GB HDD. The next thing to get is a wiimote in case you don't have one.

True, an external hard drive is a must....
