Wow, these reponses have been really helpful. Thanks guys!!
Also what's the deal with the pro controller? Can I use it for the all main Wii U games instead of the gamepad? (Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong and Mario Kart?) Is that something I should invest in as well?
Any ethernet adapter meant for Wii or Wii U will be fine. I bought an off brand for around $3 on Amazon for my Wii years ago and it's been great. The pro controller is pretty sweet and can usually be used whenever you want. It definitely works for Mario Kart and Donkey Kong. It also works for for Mario 3D World but there are some levels (not many) you MUST use the gamepad for...but it's pretty easy to switch if you have to. Some games REQUIRE the gamepad though (like ZombiU) so it's up to you if you want to invest in the pro controller. IMO, the best all around controller I've ever used. The Xbox 360 had a better shape and better triggers, but the D-pad of the Wii U Pro is phenomenal. I guess that depends on opinion though. Here's my list to compare just in case you might disagree.
Modern game controllers:
1) Wii U Pro
2) Xbox 360
3) Gamecube
4) Wii Pro
5) PS3/PS4
I know I'll get flak for placing Playstation controllers on the bottom, but I hate 'em. Buttons are too flat, d-pad is second worst (just above 360), triggers suck, sticks are too close together, shape make it feel like my hands are huge...ugh.
Oh, and Wonderful 101 is amazing if you're into crazy-theme beat-em ups.
Dual Shock 4 is the best controller on the market IMO, and the fact that you bundled the DS3 to the DS4 doesn't really make sense to me, considering the DS4 is an substantial improvement. The Wii U pro controller is still very nice though, and it has the best d-pad there is.
DualShock 4 is the best controller Sony has ever made. But I still believe it is a step below Nintendo in nearly every facet.
@Scapetti I think you're taking to the wrong guy, because i had my wiiu for a long time. And i have every game that you mention is in my game library. And i think you read my comment wrong because, you wrote many things to try to get me to buy a wiiu. But i already have a wiiu, so i don't understand your comment.
Sorry, was just quoting you, wasn't actually talking TO you. Just to talk about not needing a jacket and why I brought it up.. quoted your message to put it into context The whole message was directed at the topic creator, sorry for the confusion
I won't use a screen protector - If it gets scuffed up I will get a new gamepad or system. The only time I might is when doing that seems like it is going to start being astronomically expensive.

I have to say, I do not agree with a LOT of these people so please don't see any advice as a necessity. People are saying protection is a must and external harddrives are a must, but I completely disagree... and I don't think a new battery is necessary either as I simply have my gamepad plugged in all the time as if it were a wired controller. Except it doesn't have to be connected to the console so you don't have to trail wires across the living room floor. So these "musts", you really have to think about what YOU want personally... (read my last post about needing protection, watch youtube drop tests)
I have downloaded almost all the virtual console games and I have barely eaten into the harddrive space. It really depends on whether you are going to buy retail disc copies or download versions. Some disc games are over 10gb to download... personally I would just buy games on a disc than have to deal with such large downloads and usually the games are cheaper on disc anyway. This depends entirely on what kind of person you are but even if you download lots of download only games I doubt you will need an external harddrive. Better to wait until you actually start to run out of space I think.
About the pro controller, it is mainly for multiplayer, chances are you will find yourself playing with the gamepad almost all the time when alone thanks to all the touch screen benefits. It has all the same buttons as the gamepad but without the extra screen. So invest in one if you are going to play games with guests who would rather have traditional controls and not have to deal with flicking the wii remote to spin jump or whatever.
As for getting a USB ethernet adapter... I would get the official Wii LAN adapter!!
Personally, the only thing I use is the screen protector (it comes with a larger stylus as well!). I don't know if it is necessary, but it's just to prevent any scratches, as I know my DS screen has gained some over the years. I don't use an external harddrive, because I only buy physical games. If you want to download most of your games, an external harddrive is definitely something you should invest in, in the future. I don't use the upgraded battery either, I don't think a 3 hour life span is that much of a nuisance. Just try it out yourself, and if you want the battery to last longer, get one.
All of these extra things (battery, Pro Controller, etc.) are not necessary, so just wait until you have the system yourself, try it out, and see for yourself whether you want them or not.
I do. Or I did. My cat has now destroyed 3 Gamepad charging cables. They must be strikingly similar to a mouses tail. Just something a bit out there to consider. Still like my cat though…
The only thting i recommend is the Pro controller for A. 80 hours of battery and B. Terrific for multiplayer games. I don't have anything else, no screen protector or hardcase, no HDD. It all depends on your own prefrences
Everything can change, but I'm never changing who I am
you can get some games very cheap on Amazon. Check there before you go to Walmart, Target, Gamestop etc. also, games periodically go on sale on the eShop...you can be rewarded with patience. Give Wii Sports Club a look. I played the demo and ended up havong a lot more fun than I thought I would
I use a screen protector and doesn't avoid the touch sperience, is always a good to protect a little the screen.
Is you buy the black Wii U try to download most of your games, with the DDP option you will get some money to download another, but you have almost lost two years of that promotion.
