The market is going to continue to differentiate based on the types of experiences that consumers want. As an example, if I’m the head of a household of a family of four, and my disposable income is $50,000 to $60,000, I’m going to continue to look at the Wii because of the software, and it’s a great entertainment device. For consumers who want to have the latest gadgets and have a higher disposable income, that’s for the Wii U.
We haven’t announced pricing or availability or any other details, but given the current pricing of the Wii, it’s not going to be there.
We’ve been very clear, the market is going to decide how long these products will coexist side by side. Our goal is to launch the Wii U and drive it into the marketplace, but it will speak to a different consumer than the one that is buying the Wii today during the holidays
I think they just want to play it safe by keeping the Wii around so that they don't get another early life price drop. The problem is that if they market both of them at the same time, people are gonna get confused about what the Wii U is and they'll probably think that it's some sort of add-on rather than a new console.

@brunj04 It wouldn't have been a problem if Nintendo could have thought up a more unique name. Of course people are going to mistake it for a new model of the Wii - just like they did with the 3DS.
And regarding the pricing, if they're going to price it like their competitors, they had better put more power into it, because we've missed a load of games over the last generation because Nintendo's console hasn't been appealing to the developers and publishers.
I was planning to keep a Wii handy anyway - at least until the fateful day when I decide to get rid of my Gamecube games.

I'm pretty sure that's why most of the announced games are ports of 360/PS3 games.
hopefully this leads to the amount of exclusives and multiconsole games being more even instead of only having exclusives on Wii and only having multiconsole games on 360
I think Nintendo marketing it as more of a gadget more so than family entertainment. I think Nintendo is actually focusing on the U part of the name and is now going to appeal tot he hardcore gamers. They won the casual market with flying colors. I can see them winning the hardcore crowd back in the coming years.

have these people looked at the state of the world's economy lately? they are either delusional or smoking some heavy-duty stuff.
I don't know how people can be THAT confused between WiiU and Wii. It's like Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 being marketed at the same time and look how things turned out. Funny how no one applied that logic back then but seemingly only towards Nintendo.
They definitely do have a chance at winning back the "hardcore" gamers, but for how long? Microsoft is confirmed to be releasing a new system in 2013, which will inevitably blow the 360 out of the water (technologically, the 360 wasn't even that powerful when it was released; Microsoft can easily out perform it by miles now.) Supposedly, the Wii U is going to get ahead of the 360 and PS3 with the Wii U, but not by a whole lot. This graphical advantage won't mean much if Microsoft and Sony pull right ahead again, in terms of power.
Not that it's the graphics that matter. I'm just happy that now we will be able to enjoy Nintendo-quality gameplay in "hardcore" quality graphics. Even if it's only "hardcore" quality for a year or so, it's still better than this generation's, plus all sorts of cool things that Nintendo must have in store for us. But these gamers that it is now trying to rope in care about graphics more than anything, in most cases. It may appeal to them for a while, but they're sure to lose interest when they see the new XBOX and PS roll around. I suppose time will tell, but Nintendo shouldn't be relying on graphics as much as it would seem they are.
Nintendo - Where even first person shooters ooze creativity.

Hahaha. What.
I earn less than $20k. And more than half of what I earn isn't "disposable" income; my taxes, food, travel, clothes etc still has to come out of that. Please tell me Reggie's brain slipped and that was merely mis-spoken. How many people are on salaries that give them more than $60,000 unused cash to play with? I mean, asides Reggie.

that's why i said they must be smoking some heavy sh!t. the economic troubles are world wide right now and things are not going to improve for a long time. (just makes me want to smack reggie more than i usually do).
I remember either Reggie or Iwata saying during E3 that it won't be the same price as the Wii....so, yeah. Think it was on an IGN interview or something.
