If this is already discussed, lock it or do whatever you want with it. Your choice.
Also I've still yet to get a Wii U due to it still being expensive so yeah..... .
Anyways does it really matter if the Wii U fails? Because if at all it does, it just shows that Nintendo has learnt from this and will make sure that in future they do it right. Think about Vita to those who love that thing so much even though its selling poorly.......
Your question isn't complete so I'll assume you're asking us, the forum readers if a possible "failure" of the Wii U (whatever that actually means since I have yet to see it defined and many people who insist upon continuing to post on this forum despite clearly having zero interest in the console or Nintendo generally have decided this is already a fact) matters to you, the person who posted this conversational nugget.
Since you bothered to post it in the first place I'll go out on a limb here and say the answer is "yes."
Now if your intent was to provoke a meaningful discourse then I'd suggest you ask a more fully fleshed-out question.
In what way do you mean by matter i.e. matter to us the fans or Nintendo or both, my answer would still be yes to all three but I find your question vague and lacking.
If we're asking whether or not Nintendo will make consoles after the Wii U, then no; it does not matter if the Wii U fails or succeeds. Nintendo certainly has enough money to survive a full console generation while taking millions in losses.
If we're talking about whether or not Nintendo's business policies will remain the same, then yes; those policies greatly depend on whether or not the Wii U succeeds. While some of Nintendo's policies could use some updating, the foundations are rock-solid and it would be a shame to have Nintendo declare that they were going to change everything about how they do business.

I'd say it does matter, because if the WiiU is a complete bust (which it is, I'm not going to hide that) then that would bring many who have bought a WiiU to question Nintendo would they be up to snuff Next Generation?
Will they be ignored? Will 3rd Parties ever come back? Will Nintendo deliver instead of saying "Please wait and Understand" all the time?
If Nintendo comes up with Failure what's to say they'll fail again?
We can't just sit back and say "Well the failed! Better luck Next time!" because there may not be a Next Time.
It's not life or death- but at a certain point you lose credibility and dig yourself in a hole for the next round of things. I think the fact that technology changes so fast, plus the fact that the Wii U came out a year earlier than XBone, PS4 help a bit. They could come out with a new & more powerful system in just over 3 years. While it's obvious the Wii U won't sell huge numbers, I also think that it will do better than the low end estimates that you see with Patcher.
you better hide this popcorn befor LZ comes around.... popcorn isn't allowed in his moderating shifts..... << >>

I can't help but wonder if the Wii U would be doing better now if the Wii wasn't the exceptional success that it was. Two of the reasons the Wii U is struggling is the name, and the second, advertising.
The strategy Nintendo was going for in naming the Wii U was to ride off of the Wii's success since it's a household name. And, accordingly, advertisement for the system hasn't been as strong as it should be due to the assumption that the name would be enough to sell the system. Both obviously backfired.
So with that said, if the Wii was around the level of Gamecube or so in terms of sales, the Wii U might have had a different name and more advertising since Nintendo would have noted the regular performance of the previous system, and thus, try something completely different instead of trying to extend the brand name of the previous gen.

It matters, but it's not going to be the end of Nintendo even as a producer of video game home consoles. I think we're beyond the point where one of the big 3 game consoles can fail in terms of relevance if the Ps3 is any indication. And even if it does fail in terms of having anything resembling comparable console sales numbers in the long term, Nintendo is really good at finding profit despite not selling a billion copies of a thing.
