Apparently, WildPidgey, Akalabeth: World of Doom (which I haven't played, but have looked up) is a computer RPG that was first released in 1979. Apparently, also according to Wikipedia (I don't think there's anything wrong with Wikipedia), it's also known as the predecessor of the Ultima series of games.
If we're including text adventure games, then i'll have to revise my answer and say Dungeon (one of the pure variants of the original MIT Zork), which i played on the old Dialog dial-up network in the early 80s (many many years before Al Gore invented the Web).
My dad had a terminal (with a dedicated phone line and one of those hard-jack modems like in Wargames) with no ability to save data, so each time i'd play i'd have to print out the transcript of the game so that the next time i'd be able to get farther -- dial-up pricing back in the day was WAAAAAY expensive, and since the terminal it was primarily for my dad's work, i had very limited use of it.
After that, plenty of other text adventures on my friend's PC around the same time, including Adventure/Colossal Cave and later, of course, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
EDIT: And if we're counting "real" RPGs, then it would have to be Dungeons and Dragons, 2nd Edition (the 1981 revision).
My first 2 RPG's I played were Golden Sun and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga on the GBA. They're awesome but I gave away the Mario & Luigi game for some reason. I still have Golden Sun for GBA though and can't wait for Golden Sun DS!

Ultima: Exodus (NES release) and Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior was the far superior game - but I've heard the NES version of Exodus is a pretty weak entry in the Ultima series.

Yeah, all I can find is something saying it had "Considerably Altered Gameplay", and that usually means they dumbed it down for console players.

Or perhaps it's the other way around. AFAIK, the only way to beat the NES version is to grind the lowest level monsters possible until you are an old man. And not the quick way, with Repel, but the slow way... walking your knights up to the enemies and slashing away.
If you use Repel, they go down quick, but spellcasters cannot affect strong monsters that come late in the game. Having fighters in the group while a spellcaster uses repel does not help, as only the party member that kills a monster gets EXP. If you melee the lowest level monsters and try to level up normally by going back to the king when you have enough EXP, the monsters will also level up, and you will soon be outmatched.
Which all sums to: melee the lowest level monsters. When you have enough XP, do not go back to the king to level up. Keep fighting. And fighting. And fighting. And fighting.
I never really cared too much for RPGs, so it took something truly unique to pique my interest. That something was Earthbound. EB introduced me to the RPG genre.
