Most of the ones that immediately come to mind are PS1/PS2 JRPGs. I'm sure I don't need to list them. You all know what they are.
Xenogears, Xenosage III, and Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter? OK, I have a feeling that isn't the ones you were referring to...but those are the lesser-known JRPG's from that era that I really enjoyed. Both Valkyrie Profiles were good too. I also like the Persona games...but the fanbase is butchering them. Sure, Persona 4 was great...but when the mystery aspect don't even match up with one of the lesser episodes of Colombo...we have flaw in the "genius" the fans are going on and on about...
Oh yeah, and you were probably talking about Final Fantasy. The PS1 games (NOT the ports) were the golden years for that series.

If you were going to make a list of 10 great things about Persona 4, its mystery plot twists would rank about #38.

Final Fantasy IX would be in my top 10 list of greatest PS1/PS2 games, but the other two wouldn't. Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI are all better than VII, VIII, and IX, in my opinion.
But yeah, generally speaking, you could say Xeno____, Final Fantasy __, and Persona _ and be correct. There's so many though, and FF is really just the tip of the iceberg. It's a great series for JRPG newbies because of its recognition, but there's a lot of better stuff available.
So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.
The series isn't realistic I know. Those scenes were fine, but point me towards Snake backflipping willy nilly in any other MGS games. I'm fine with it because Twin Snakes isn't canon.
"They played us like a damn fiddle!" - MGS5
"Finish your mission, prove your loyalty." - MGS3
"We could take a s*** on you from such a height, you'd think God himself has crapped on you!" - GTA: SA
Currently Playing: The Phantom Pain.
1) Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete (PS1)
2) Final Fantasy VII (PS1)
3) Monster Rancher 2 (PS1)
4) Metal Gear Solid (PS1)
5) Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
6) Silent Hill (PS1)
7) Xenogears (PS1)
8) Persona 4 Golden (PS VITA)
9) Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (PC ENGINE/PSP)
10) Catherine (360/PS3)

Dude, I don't even need cutscenes for that - I clearly remember cartwheeling my way through several sections of Metal Gear Solid 3.
Bioshock - I think this will go down as one of the all time greats. Tells a fantastic story without the need for cut scenes. It's a pretty good story at that too.
Portal - Maybe the sequel is technically the better game, but definitely play this first. Great gameplay and some of the funniest writing ever seen in gaming.
The Walking Dead: Season One - A lot of people here still seem to hate the idea of episodic gaming, but this shows how great it can be.
Journey - Play it on a PS3/PS4 connected to the internet and play it in one sitting.
And some gems from older gens that people should definitely try and play:
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Persona 4
Jet Set Radio

Yet it's just as silly. I'll never understand how anybody can take Metal Gear Soid seriously...
Final Fantasy Tactics, the ONLY final fantasy which story its actually believable, it could even be pass for our own world’s convoluted history (Religion, politics, back stabing, etc...) and the gameplay is SUPERB, its actually the game that made me a fan of SRPG
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Star Ocean Second Story
Parasite Eve 1&2 (both are some of my favorite games EVER)
