@JaxonH Nintendo technically did something similar with Fire Emblem Fates though. Only way to get all 3 paths on cart was the special edition.

I wonder what size Xenoblade Chronicles will be? Wasn't X over 16gb? Smash would be another pushing 16gb. I can't imagine Nintendo taking the approach of needing to download extra data. If they start doing it then others will too.

@Grumblevolcano
I can see the comparison but, not really the same. The 3rd path was DLC. And each of the other 2 were complete games, each sold as separate games. Whereas NBA 2k18 is just one game and one release, and took 2/3 of the main game and made it an update, which when you're dealing with a 30gb game is quite substantial. So a special edition wouldn't be including separate games and separate DLC, but rather the majority portion of the main game that was not included.

@OorWullie XCX only just fit on a disk, hence the optional 15GB of downloads to install parts of the game on HDD.

XC2 cant be more than 32gb

@BLP_Software So Nintendo will either go with a 32gb card and swallow the extra cost or go with a 16gb card that requires a download for optional data packs or perhaps even the main game. On Wii U it was manageable because hard drives are cheap and size isn't really an issue, plus it was completely optional.It'll be interesting to see what approach they take with XC2.

@OorWullie Nintendo have some data compression magic, remember? Look at Super Mario Odyssey, there's a lot to do in this game, and yet it's only 5GB file size.

Well since more then likely Nintendo is holding these carts I don't think the cost is nearly as big for these things for them. I highly doubt they will pass on extra data to us as that's a slippery slope right now.

It's not like they couldn't use a 32GB cartridge. In fact, Dragon Quest Heroes I & II for Switch was released on a 32GB cartridge several months ago, and that was a third party game by Square Enix.

@Azooooz
Very true. Nintendo always does an excellent job of optimizing their file sizes. BotW from any other dev would've pushed 80 gigs lol (ok ok... I'll say 50-80 haha)

@JaxonH Hmpf, I might be being cynical here, but in a years time and the bigger carts are cheaper, I dare say companies might increase double dippers with GotY editions etc. Now own all the game and dlc on one cartridge.

There are also rumours about them bringing Joe's Diner to Switch. Hopefully it's not like the totally broken Wii U version.

@rallydefault True, but it's not an entirely fair comparison. Nintendo knows their hardware better than any other company, so optimising is less of a problem to them. On top of that, they can also permit the extra resources spent on optimising because not every game has to be as profitable. Remember, Nintendo sells games to sell their hardware, which in turn sells third party games from which they can collect royalty fees. It's the reason why Sony has no issue with releasing a game like The Last Guardian after a development cycle of almost ten years!

@MsJubilee Literally!

They're clearly after the profit. The question is why even bother putting the game on a 8GB cartridge? Why don't they buy a small 1GB cartridge or even better, a 1MB cartridge with just the installer on it?

Because there's always a price floor with these sort of things. It wouldn't surprise me if the smallest Switch cartridge worth making was something like 2GB. It also wouldn't surprise me if the cost gap between a 2GB and 8GB cartridge was so small that it's not really a factor.

With that said when a game has a mandatory 20GB+ download? I don't know why the physical release even exists at that point. They're basically just selling you a code in a box at that point so why not just do that? If this is entirely a cost saving thing give up on the cartridge entirely and just throw a code in the box.
