@skywake There's brilliant potential right here:

A Zelda/Nioh-like crossover with a focus on action set in feudal Japan? I'm in, and they don't even need to invent the IP, they already have it!

Honestly, I would prefer Nintendo to scrap the New Super Mario Bros. style, but still make a new 2D Mario Platformer, with the game going back to the series's roots and building off from them in a different way. I think it would be awesome if the game could be more in the spirit of Super Mario World as well.

Agreed. Super Mario World still remains my favorite 2D Mario platformer game of all time. I've always wanted to see either a HD remaster of this game or see a NSMB game crafted more in the style of SMW.

However, I think we have a better chance of seeing a sequel to Super Mario 3D World before seeing another 2D Mario platformer like NSMB.

@Octane Honestly, a tough-as-nails top-down Zelda game would be pretty cool

As for NSMB, I think we see one eventually. Especially with the whole multiplayer aspect of the Switch, it would be dumb for them not to make one.

I know I'm in the minority when I say this, but I've always enjoyed Mario's 2D adventures more than his 3D ones.

I've played every 2D Mario game from start to finish and enjoyed them.

On the other hand, I've only beaten Super Mario 3D Land, and gotten pretty far in 3D World and 64.

I think, in general, I prefer the gameplay of the 2D games to the 3D ones. I have gotten bored with most of the 3D Mario games.

The only ones I have not gotten bored of is Super Mario 3D Land and 3D World because they mix 2D Mario elements with 3D gameplay, and Super Mario 64 because that game is like a virtual playground with so much to do and discover.

But the other 3D Mario games? I just can't finish them...

So, would I love to see a NSMB Switch? The answer to that question is yes!

@Scrummer I was actually talking about Murasame Castle, and bringing that IP into the modern era.

@Caryslan Sunshine is very similar to 64, and I imagine Odyssey will play the same. The Galaxy games are more linear though, and don't have many big open worlds.

I guarantee there'll be one for the Switch at some point. They sell too much and cost relatively little to make. It'll be inevitable.
They'll really need to change things up though after Mario Maker.

@Octane Ah, the fact that you said "Zelda/Nioh" Kind of messed me up.

If Nintendo wanted to not be cheap they would release a brand new NSMB game that has Mario Maker 2.0 bundled in as a mode like Halo 3 or any other game with a level editor to justify spending $60 on a 2D game that's been relatively the same since the turn of the century. But that just isn't how Wii U Nintendo operates.

I'd love one and I'd love it if the game contained certain levels that incorporated the gameplay mechanics of Super Mario Parkour (er, uh, Run) and Super Mario Maker

I just wish Nintendo would take a look back at Super Mario Land 2 for future 2D Mario Titles. That Game had some great Ideas and Level Themes.

Isn't that kinda what the 3DS version of Mario Maker did. I never got it but apparently a lot of the premade levels were pretty good. And about as many of them as a full game.

Speaking as someone who doesn't want another New SMB I don't think there's much negativity here towards 2D platformers. I just think the series hasn't really grown much. As a fan of 2D platformers for me the first New SMB was almost game of the year material. The second I was fine with because it was now on the TV. But the next two were basically just level packs. And if level packs is all the series has to offer Super Mario Maker did a far better job of that.

Anyways, at this stage Yoshi and Kirby are two of only a small handful of upcoming Nintendo published Switch games we're even aware of. So I wouldn't worry too much

I think we will get a new super mario bros game or at least because the name was too over used, it will come put as a different name. Well if you see the nintendo switch, it is obviously well fit for a 2D game. In single player, you can use the same button layout of New super mario bros U. And the hardware for advanced graphics would fit pretty well. And the as 2P mode, you might be pretty much playing as mario or luigi. And as controls, you can use a joycon grip and a pro controller like SMO. Also, using the two joycons on handheld mode would fit also. I know that the new super mario bros title was overused but im pretty sure there will be a new 2d mario game because a lot of players do enjoy it (including me). It might be a literally different story and be a 2D game like Super mario galaxy having nothing to fit as a mario but feels like a mario game.

Im just saying even though the “New Super Mario Bros” title was overused, there might be a new 2d game coming to the switch considering it fitting the console

@by5506210 There is definitely a new 2D Mario game coming to the Switch, it's really a matter of when and what do Nintendo do to give it the much needed new lease of life. Nintendo kinda oversaturated the market with the New Super Mario Bros series and didn't really add enough to the formula with each instalment to keep the series interesting and fresh.

I mean, I don't really mind 2D platformers even though I prefer 3D platformers, but the main problem with 2D platformers is that most of them feel really stale lately, and NSMB is a good example of why. They basically tend not to be more than just level packs, and in this day and age you can get something like that out of $20 DLC, not a $60 game. The genre really needs to evolve and inject some fresh ideas into the formula. You never really see a game like Sunshine or Galaxy or Odyssey that has a unique setting and a unique gameplay mechanic in the 2D platformers for whatever reason, just the same old Mushroom Kingdom with the same old gameplay mechanics and the same old characters and enemies over and over and over and over and over again ad nauseum. And you pretty much see the same story in most of the other platformers, DK and Yoshi have had similar issues as well (Kirby too kind of, but Kirby's been a bit better about injecting new ideas into its gameplay than the other three, Planet Robobot in particular is probably the closest a 2D platformer has come to the Sunshine/Galaxy/Odyssey design philosophy).

I really think their best chance at revitalizing 2D Mario is to further what they did with Mario Maker and build a vibrant fan creator community. The fans can probably come up with a lot of things Nintendo wouldn't even think of which they could then use to improve future games and so on.

I prefer a 2D Mario over 3D Mario any time! Mario 2D never felt repetitive or unimaginative to me. Each installment had some new power ups and settings or at least what was expected. When buying a 2D Mario game I expect that to be placed in the Mushroom Kingdom and to have all the old or known enemies. I disagree that this shouldn't cost more than 20 $ - all 2D games offer a lot of levels, polish and great design.

Despite that, Mario Maker was fun, but custom levels were mostly not very well designed and without real worlds and secrets to discover, it was just not as good as any 2D Mario game before. Furthermore, it was really annoying when your self-made level has been taken down from the server without further notice or any reason whatsoever.

Creating levels was fun at the beginning but so much was missing to create a full 2D Mario game experience that I hope that Nintendo won't do a sequel but rather a new 2D Mario game in a 'cartoonish drawn' art style or a Wario Bros game.

By the way, most user levels were either perfect jump, don't move or some kind of other bs type of levels.
