I absolutely adored NSMB:Wii, but it' remains the only NSMB I have ever owned...I'd love to see a Switch version, it seems like it'd be a perfect fit for the console - but, having not played any of the more recent NSMB games, I'd be more than happy with a port/remaster/deluxe edition
The DS deserved a game.
The 3DS deserved a game.
The Wii deserved a game.
The Wii U deserved a game.
The Wii U being the best version of them all, because ain't nobody playing the Wii game anymore. The worst version is the 3DS game IMO because it really did feel like a game made for the sake of being made, but the 3DS still deserved its own game.
Don't get me wrong, I liked, purchased, and completed all of the New Super Mario Bros titles. However, I really feel that Nintendo needs to branch more into 3D (which it thankfully seems like its doing), rather than focusing on 2d sidescrollers. There are way too many 2d sidescrollers on Nintendo systems to the point that the market is a little inflated, and Nintendo is running out of new things to add to them that make it interesting.
I welcome Super Mario Odyssey (which I'm really excited for), and hope that it indicates the direction of future titles.
I'm gonna cry if the game Retro is working on is another 2d DKC
@Kogorn733 The most interesting 2D Mario game since Super Paper Mario is Super Mario Odyssey — a 3D Mario game with 2D sections within it.
I hope Yoshi: Unknown and Kirby: No-name Puffball are the last 2D Switch games for a while. I wouldn't mind another New Super Mario Bros. game, but this one would actually have to do something drastically different like add a story component or puzzles or something.
@sillygostly Agreed. I mean, as much as I want Super Mario Maker on the Switch, the lack of a dual-screen set up is what's truly holding it back for me since having a TV screen had that spectator feature that made it unique. Not to say the game is bad since I loved it on Wii U, but if anything, docking and undocking the Switch system just isn't the same and I could just see my system or docking cradle (or worse, both) breaking from all the switching between making and playing a level, and I don't want that to happen.
I would personally rather them not make another Super Mario Bros. game and concentrate their efforts into ARMS, Pokken, Splatoon 2, BoTW DLC pack 2, Mario Odyssey, Metroid 4, possible Smash Bros. etc...
Honestly, I would prefer Nintendo to scrap the New Super Mario Bros. style, but still make a new 2D Mario Platformer, with the game going back to the series's roots and building off from them in a different way. I think it would be awesome if the game could be more in the spirit of Super Mario World as well.

Here's a novel idea, what if instead of another New SMB Nintendo does what they did with New SMB in the first place again. Remember New SMB at the time was Nintendo taking the modern/"New" Mario and dropping him in a 2D game. A new coat of paint for a style of game they hadn't done in a while. Not unlike what they recently did with Samus Returns. The issue with New SMB is that they then made three sequels.
So maybe instead of another New SMB Nintendo made another game with the same idea as they originally had. Why not make another 2D Kid Icarus? Why not invent an entirely new IP and make a modern take on a classic style game out of that? Or take one of their existing characters and build a new style of game around that like they did with Captain Toad and Kirby's Epic Yarn.
I'd like to see any of those ideas over another New SMB.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"
I hope the Super Mario Bros. series comes to Switch soon. The sales of the “New” games really command it happen. I enjoy the Super Mario series and am hyped for Odyssey but the Super Mario Bros. series is absolute tops for me
Let's be honest though. We all just want Super Mario Bros/World Mania . I mean, Mario Maker means they probably shouldn't do a simple "old graphics, new game" format, but some higher quality sprites you'd see in the 32 bit era that Nintendo ignored. Or something like that.
