Wasn't NSMB2 done by a different team... and was poorer for it?
Nope, all of the games were under the old EAD Group 4, released well before Iwata's death and Nintendo's restructuring.
If there isn't New Super Mario Bros., there is most likely going to be some other Mario game to take its place. Granted Mario Party and Mario sports have been really trashy throughout the Wii U era. I wonder if Nintendo is back to the point where they could release a game like New Super Mario Bros. with Mario Maker as the online mode and not as its own release. If they could make a complete new campaign with newly interesting levels / power ups, a less annoying world structure, and without the inconsistencies with Mario Maker, that's what I'd want to see.
Nintendo doesn't get why the Wii U failed, not because people didn't understand it but because the lack of games.
The Wii U launched with NSMBU which is widely considered to be the best of the series, yet it still failed.
it's still just as powerful as the xbox and the PS 4 and much less powerful than the PS 4 PRO, and it costs more.
It is not "just as powerful as Xbone and PS4".It's somewhere between Wii U and the Xbone in power and probably closer to Wii U at that.
but Nintendo has tried those kind of variations before and they didn't work (e.g. super mario sunshine).
Nintendo has never released a console worldwide (as far as I'm aware) with a new Mario and Zelda in its first year.In Europe the Gamecube had both in the same year but that's only because it launched 6 months later in that region. The SNES also had both but only because its western was much later.
They need super mario bros, super smash bros, mario kart (a new version) and possibly something like super mario galaxy 3.
Mario is the most recognized and successful franchise in the history of gaming, will they just throw it out?
Well we're getting Super Mario Odyssey and Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle this year to go with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and a possible Smash port.I wouldn't call that throwing the franchise out.
Super Mario Bros. Switch would be pretty amazing (as well as a port of 3D World) on tabletop mode, but I hope that Nintendo opt for a new aesthetic for the next SMB game. I would love for the next SMB to have traditionally hand-drawn graphics a la Wario Land: The Shake Dimension.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
I hope a game is coming but has an overhaul to make it feel fresh. A proper New Super Mario World would be great, overhauled graphics would help too. Made by a completely different team.
I agree that play anywhere local multiplayer could be a big draw.
Why not New Super Nintendo Princesses ?
Play as Princess Peach / Daisy / Rosalina to rescue Mario & Luigi + Toads who has been kidnaped by Bowser that hypnotized by a new enemy.
You can switch either of them during gameplay and all of them have Special Abilities. Kinda like Super Princess Peach DS.
I skipped Wii U so I haven't tried Mario Maker, but I don't really understand the point. Why would I want to create my own super mario level? Much of the fun of playing a new Mario game is not knowing what's coming.
I absolutely want a new 2D mario game. I don't consider new super mario bros stale (maybe in part because I haven't played one since New Super Mario Bros Wii), but if it's a whole new Mario series (New New Super Mario Bros?), that's fine too.
You don't have to create your own courses in Mario Maker - you can treat it as an effectively infinite source of user created levels in which you never know what's coming next.
Now granted that most of them are garbage and you usually have a good idea of what's coming next ("irritating death, irritating death, irritating death" or "autoplay") but creation is only one part of the experience.
Personally I prefer the curated NSMB games but I can understand why Mario Maker has a very broad appeal.
I was actually very pleased to not see one. I enjoyed the original one back on the DS, but that was the last one I enjoyed. I rented the Wii version and couldn't get into it at all. Then when I got my Wii U it came bundled with the U version. I touched it once and never looked back. I don't think I made it past the first course.

The thing is you don't know what's coming when you're playing someone else's level. If anything it's better in that regard because you effectively have an endless supply of levels. It's like having a Mario game with dynamic level creation but instead of a computer building the levels it's a person who has to also be able to beat it. If that wasn't the case then youtube channels like this wouldn't be able to exist.
In terms of creation? You don't create a level to have a fun level to play. You create levels so you can share your creation with others. The fun with creation has nothing to do with playing the level yourself. The fun is in posting your creation online and seeing how people react to it.
I would adore another NSMB (been playing SMB since day one, and I don't think I'll ever tire of 2D Mario platformers) but I'd really prefer they went with a less sterile art style going forward--never liked the look of these games, especially when the other 2D Nintendo platformers had much better/more charming graphics (eg, Yoshi and Kirby).
With the Switch being so ideal for local multiplayer, I'm sure we'll get a NSMB for it at some point.
I'm just glad we're getting Super Mario Odyssey first. NSMB titles should be there for gamers who want more Mario after the "main course," rather than serving as the ONLY Mario fix available on a system for an extended period of time (Wii U).
They'd absolutely need a new art style if they make another one of these. And it'd need to be more creative too. The last 3 of these games felt all the same to me.
