The Wii U has continued to struggle, and everyone says that the 3DS is what's keeping Nintendo afloat. However, could the very thing keeping them afloat be the Wii U's biggest problem? I'd like to see your thoughts on this.
I'm not saying the 3DS shouldn't exist, I'm saying that it might have been the main thing that's crippled the Wii U this entire time - more so than lack of advertising or no games.
The 3DS sales in 2014 are down by millions, and the Wii U sales have increased by only hundres of thousands (in Japan they've actually dropped this year). I don't thnk the 3DS is affecting Wii U sales.

While true, it's also possible that people who already had a 3DS before this year feel they don't need to buy a Wii U, as they have the 3DS to "scratch that Nintendo itch". I just feel that most of the general public who want their Nintendo fix can do so for much cheaper by getting a 3DS, which has a much more established library.
If people want a Wii U, they will get a Wii U. They're not going to settle for a 3DS because it's cheaper. They're two entirely different experiences. It's like asking if Samsung's tablets cut into their smart TV sales.

the problem is that it's centered on the gamepad. why? because:
1. The gamepad is so gimmicky
2. We STILL don't have a creative use of the gamepad.
3. the Wii U is essentially an HD Home console DS.

What's wrong with the way the Gamepad is used in Lego City: Undercover, Pikmin 3, NintendoLand and Stealth Inc. 2?
Lego City: Undercover, and Pikmin 3 just have maps and a motion control camera.
Nintendo land: let's go over all of the uses
Mario chase/Luigi's ghost mansion/Metroid blast/Zelda battle quest/pikmin adventure/animal crossing sweet day/Capt. Falcon twister race: alternate camera angles with occasional motion controls in some games
Takamaru's castle, Octopus dance and yoshi's fruit cart: see things on one screen, do things on other
Balloon trip breeze: touch screen controls only on gamepad
DK Crash course: tilt controls, yay

Only in the sense that the 3DS is a better product, and thus people are more likely to buy it (and trying to stop that would be one of the most ridiculously stupid ideas imaginable for a company like Nintendo).
Looking at 2014 and 2015, I would say it's the opposite. All the attention the Wii U looks to be getting is giving Nintendo less opportunity to focus on the 3DS. I think the main problem with the Wii U is its hardware. I personally think it should've been a handheld system, given how much I play exclusively on the Game Pad, rather than a home console.
