If the cheaper handheld experience is stealing Wii U sales, why didn't it steal the Wii sales? The answer is because the Wii actually had something new that the DS didn't have, the motion control that everyone was excited about. If you count the number of new things the Wii U can do that the 3DS can't, there aren't that many. Connecting to a bigger screen, and HD visuals, that's about it. They both use two screens, they both can be played without a TV (except for the Wii U, you only have 1 screen now), they both use touch, mic, gyro, online, etc. But the 3DS is more portable AND it's in 3D. I actually am not surprised that the 3DS is doing better. The Wii U had better games, but people without Wii U's don't know that.
My main case for it is better local multiplayer, but not a whole lot of other people are excited about that. Plus, they can assume that the 3DS is better for multiplayer because the 3DS is way more popular right now.
The Wii U runs most games at 60fps which makes them immeasurably better (Anything that is most fun played quickly). The 3DS has a handful that work like that.

Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
Just thinking about it, what game is coming to the Wii U that didn't come to the 3DS first?
-Mario 2D and 3D both came to 3DS first
-Donkey Kong Country Returns was on the Wii first, and now fills that gap in the 3DS library
-Kirby still isn't properly represented on Wii U but is on 3DS
-3DS has three Zelda games, Wii U has one coming out in a year and one less popular older title
-3DS has Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Bravely Default (to make up for no Golden Sun, or at least that's the way I see it.). Wii U has none of these franchises.
-3DS had Mario Kart before Wii U, and Smash Bros at the same time
The only titles that seem to be on Wii U but not 3DS are stuff like Pikmin, Splatoon, Wonderful 101, Bayonetta, and the occasional 3rd party title. While there is some really good stuff on the Wii U that can't be found on the 3DS, I don't think it's enough to sell the system to most people who already own a 3DS.
The OP had a point, he just didn't articulate it right.

That's only because the 3DS came out First.

The 3DS still has a cheeky shape with 395,000 consoles sold for the whole 3DS family. this score is mainly carried out by the New 3DS XL, which has a performance of 130% better than the original 3DS XL on the launch period.
