Look I love e-sports a lot and I would totally get into it more if I had more time, but no video games aren't a conventional sport. Being good enough to play a game at a competitive level is great and impressive and fun, but not a sport.
I don't see a problem with handing out scholarships for it though. We hand out academic scholarships and creativity scholarships. If someone's the best at something, recognise it.
always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)
The definition of sports as being physical isn't at all as clear cut as people are suggesting.
Snooker, pool and darts are traditionally considered sports. I'd argue that a game like International Track and Field on the PS1 requires more physical exertion than any of them.
If schools want to hand out scholarships for this then they should be able to, but I don't understand why they should.
Scholarships tend to be seen as an investment of sorts. This is most apparent in the traditional athletic scholarship, when if a school has a good sports team, their games will bring in great revenue for the school. Now, with academic and creativity scholarships, it is a bit more like advertising. If a brilliant mind goes to your school and makes something of himself, or discovers something important, that school gets bragging rights to say they educated that person. That gives the school credibility as a good establishment for learning, which will make the best a brightest go there. Same goes with creative minds; if a creative person becomes famous, the school gets to brag. This can apply to art schools, in which case they will receive credibility, or even normal schools. In the case of the latter, the school receives advertising through idolization; people idolize these figures and want to be just like them, therefore bringing in more revenue for the school.
Or maybe most of what I said was ridiculous, whatever...

I'm sorry, as much as I love playing games, they should not be considered a sport. IMO Nascar isn't either. (turn left, turn left, turn left, turn left, OH NO WHAT DO I DO NOW, oh, turn left.
But if they had half the cars race the other way... that would be interesting.
You have to be fit to get into a 100 degree car and you have to be a fine driver to control a car going 200 miles an hour for 3 hours.

I don't think they are sports, specifically because there can be sports simulations, and those obviously are not real sports... but video games can be competitive... there's a competition I've heard of before called the Electronic Sports World Cup; though for whatever reason includes more First Person Shooters than sports games, but still xP But anyway yeah, they're not really sports, but it makes sense to have video games in an organized competitive manner.
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
By definition, no, video games should not be accepted as a physical activity.
Games do require skill. And are comptetitive. There is no "and", only "or", so that means it requires one of those 2 things, or can be both, actually.
Also, you want to check out that outlandish thing which is also called a sport by people and remote parts of galaxy - it's called chess.

You got to keep in mind, if a college is giving a scholarship for $1,000, and the semester tuition is $10,000, then the college is still getting $9,000, so if it acts a reason for the kid choosing that college over the others, they make money.

So far only one small university in Chicago has done something to this effect. I highly doubt it will catch on. Non-profits and donors will not be giving out money to give to gamers anytime soon
