Hm. I think I should try some of the original games, especially since they're quite a bit different than today's. Of the ones I have played Order of Ecclesia is my favorite. I tried to get into Symphony of the Night at one point, but for whatever reason it just didn't do it for me. **shrug**

No its not. Everything the original Castlevania does has been bettered by later games. A retro classic it may be but its certainly not better than many (but not all) of its sequels.

How long did you play for? The game does start off slowly but once you have aquired a decent amount of good weapons and special moves and get into enjoying exploring new areas on the map, thats where the praise so many people have for it comes from. I strongly suspect that you haven't given it enough time for it to properly start.
The current state of Castlevania is sorta depressing right now. The wii just gets a lousy fighting game and Order of Ecclesia is most likely the last DS Castlevania. Unless the new 3DS has something in the works for Castlevania fans it's looking grim for the series. I guess my current favorites are Symphony, Rondo and Ecclesia. I couldn't choose just one.

Order of Ecclesia. The other metroidvanias I've played were solid in their own right (except CotM and DoS which are really hard to find nowadays). I enjoyed how you get to explore the settings and collect many items from different beasts. The characters may move slow, but they sure can animate well. For the "classic" castlevanias, I've only played SC IV a long time ago and it was really good from what I've played. It may be linear and short compared to the modern games, but it was a great and challenging game from that time. I love the Castlevania series and became a fan since last year, but sadly, many people I know don't find appeal in 2D games with any kind of sprites anymore.
Aria of Sorrow, for introducing the RPG/exploration element (metroidvania) and for its crowning moment of awesome. Dawn of Sorrow, while technically improved, didn't 'feel' as good to me. The whole Soma backstory thing was also already out there, and the fact that you restart in power level didn't make much sense to me. It was also in part due to the lack of Ayami Kojima artwork, in part due to the cornier storyline and dialogue.
I have yet to seriously try an old-style Castlevania game. I'd like to play Symphony of the Night if I can get my hands on it.
Rondo of Blood isn't that bad. You just need to take your time when playing it, and you should do fine. The only reason it's usually difficult is because you do it yourself! P:
Anyway, my favorites are: 3. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon 2. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse 1. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

Legacy of Darkness (yes, seriously). The only other ones I've played are the first three and Rondo of Blood. Simon's Quest was pretty good, I hated the rest. Like, really really hate. The jumping is rigid and the whip is slow, and it's... ugh... I don't understand the appeal of Castlevania.
Though I've only ever beaten one Castlevania game... Portrait of Ruin... lol I liked that game too, yay charlotte

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
I was pretty happy with Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth. It's certainly one of my favourtie WiiWare games.
Seeing as though I haven't played all the classics I can't say exactly how it stacks up to the likes of 'Super' and 'SOTN', but Rebirth is a great game.
Off-Topic: @BassX0 - I find it highly admirable how you manage to revive threads that haven't been replied to in over a year. What's your secret? Do you watch these threads, or do you go through hundreds (if not thousands) of pages to look for it? ...You're not gonna reply about it, are you? =(
On-Topic: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is my favorite game of the series. It's brilliant. It's got awesome everything!!!!!!! The soundtrack is awesome, the visuals are splendid, the gameplay is great, and the atmosphere is so haunting. It's also got a lot of replay value. My second favorite is Akumajou Dracula X Chi no Rondo (its difficulty is overrated, imo, though that's not to say that there aren't any challenging portions). My third favorite is Super Castlevania IV (though I find it a tad overrated, I think it's a good game). My least favorite is the original Castlevania. These are the only games I've played in the series.
How come you haven't beaten Castlevania SOTN? Its pretty easy.
Oh its not the difficulty, I just... stopped playing it and haven't went back.
It's still sitting on my PSP waiting for me to play with it again.
