Growing up as a kid in the early '90s, I was hooked on "Simon's Quest", in spite of my Mom's objections (which seem a lot more reasonable to me now as an adult). By the time I reached my teens, it was "Super CastleVania IV", and then very quickly "Symphony of the Night"...which I didn't even realize was a sequel until many years later. At first, I found the "Metroidvania" nickname amusing, but its become so overused I'm almost insulted now. I did play the other NES games in the series, but never beat either of them. The Reaper kept getting me in the original, while I might have reached Alucard in the third game.

God, guns, and guts made America; let's keep all three.

My favourite is Castlevania 4. I love both its music and its graphics, most of its stages have a great atmosphere and I expecially like outdoor locations (one of the main reasons why I prefer SCV4 rather than SOTN). Its gameplay is very fun too and it is not too hard compared to many other games from that period so it is always very enteetaining

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

Symphony of the Night, bought it for PS1 in middle school for 20 bucks after it went on 'greatest hits'. lol

I'm still waiting for a good post SoN 3D Castlevania game.

From the classic Castlevanias, Super Castlevania IV is my favourite by far. I love pretty much everything about that game, and it has one of the best soundtracks ever in my opinion.

From the Metroidvanias, I have a harder time choosing just one game. I have a real soft spot for Circle of the Moon, Dawn of Sorrow and of course Symphony of the Night. I think I will go with Circle of the Moon, it’s the one I’ve replayed the most times, so I guess that kind of means it is my favourite.

From the 3D games, it really isn’t hard to choose Lament of Innocense as my favourite, as it is the only one I think is good. I’ve never played the ones on N64 but they seem terrible. I thought Curse of Darkness was pretty boring, and I just didn’t like Lords of Shadow. I haven’t played Lords of Shadow 2, but almost everyone seems to think it’s worse than the first one, so I think I can pretty safely assume that I wouldn’t like that game either.

So,

Classic: Super Castlevania IV
Metroidvania: Circle of the Moon
3D: Lament of Innocense.
