A Silver Mt. Zion. Though I worry more and more each day that they've broken up (no updates in many moons) and thus invalidated themselves for this thread.
Mark my words. The Arcade Fire. Oh, and I'm actually getting increasingly impressed with Coldplay. I thought their first three albums were garbage, Radiohead rip-offs. But Viva La Vida? That's a goodass album, right there. And their new EP? Pretty darn good. I'm not saying they even touch the all time greatest musicians or anything, but I think they're getting better.
Clearly we have different views because, between you and me, I'm actually a Modest Mouse fan as well. A Pixies rip off? A little bit. But I don't think their crap or anything. In fact I'm seeing them in concert this August.
Couple of things - first, ok your words are marked. Second, Coldplay, whom I used to friggin' LOVE, is devolving into mainstream commericalized garbage, no longer innovative in my opinion. Third, I agree we have different views, but we share some also. I love Radiohead. I like Modest Mouse. And I respect Arcade Fire, but don't think they register on the Richter Scale of Importance to The World Right Now. Or ever, even. It's not an insult to them, they're talented musicians in an endless sea of talented musicians. Bowie, Reznor, Radiohead, in that order on my list, are THE innovators.

Viva La Vida (the album not the song) is the only thing Coldplay have ever done that even comes close to resembling innovation. Up until that, they just ripped off OK Computer, the Bends, and Amnesiac. I'm not saying that they haven't made good music up until Viva La Vida. I really enjoy Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y (never understood all the hate for that one). But have you heard Strawberry Swing? Lost? Yes? Those are all songs that don't really sound like any other band in the world's songs. None of Coldplay's other songs prior to Viva do a whole lot to hide their influences.
And I don't know if you've seen Coldplay live, but I did last month and...holy crap. They are a surprisingly innovative live band. Sorry, Coldplay's a touchy subject with me. I like them but, until recently, I don't think they've deserved all their praise. They've always been good, but I think now they're officially great.
Also, on the influence of the Arcade Fire--I go to Canada every year (AF's canadian) for vacation. They are a freakin' huge band down there. You can hear their influence on other bands just by switching on their local radio stations.
Res de gustibus non est disputandum, but man I hate Viva la Vida (the album not the song, which, in a bit of titular irony, is my favorite on the album). It's okay though, we have enough between us with Radiohead. Do you like Bowie and Reznor though?

David Bowie? No. Reznor is okay but he's a total jerk in real life--he's always hating on Radiohead. But yeah I don't mind Nine Inch Nails. They're good, but a bit too angsty for me so I can only take them in short bursts. I esspecially like their song that Jonny Cash covered (though I actually like Jonny Cash's version better).

I'm a huge Bowie fan; even though he's still technically "current," I didn't mention him since his days of glory are unfortunately long past (although I do find parts of Outside to be excellent, and I'll even put on a track or two from Heathen from time to time).
Pick any album by Bowie in the 70s, however, and it rates amongst the best popular music ever created, in my mind. Now to dig up Low again for the second time in the past few weeks...

Ah yeah! They just blow me away (no pun intended). I still need to listen/buy Honky Reduction come to think of it...
hah, I just felt the need to put something heavier and more obscure in there. Though they definitely are influential in their own way. Scott Hull is a great guitar player which he shows off more in the newest album Agorapocalypse and in his other band Pig Destroyer. They've also influenced other metal and grind acts and especially drum machine grind acts and one person bands. They showed you don't need a live drummer to make really good, really heavy music.
The most important? To who? It's very subjective, i prefer to tell you my favorite band: Iron Maiden. I think The Beatles were the ones that reached a level that no one has to this day.
Black Sabbath is influential to metal. The Beatles, I must say are, are quite influential. There are a lot of blues guys and blues overall influenced many bands we consider great today. Like Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Pink Floyd to name a few. Classical has a lot of influence in metal as well, some of you may deny this, but I'm not arguing. Despite all of this, The Cavemen were the most influential in my opinion. Their music is as old as the dinosaurs.

GOO GOO DOLLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'd give up forever to touch you 'Cause I know that you feel me somehow You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment And all I can breathe is your life 'Cause sooner or later it's over I just don't want to miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming Or the moment of truth in your lies When everything feels like the movies Yeah you bleed just to know you're alive
And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am
And I don't want the world to see me 'Cause I don't think that they'd understand When everything's made to be broken I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am I just want you to know who I am I just want you to know who I am
