Hey there fans! I've seen a few episodes of Dr. Who and I kinda wanted to get into the habit of watching it regularly. Can I just start whenever I want? Or should I watch it from the first episode?
It's recommended you start at the beginning as it's quite complex, but I started at the fifth episode of the Doctor's ninth generation (Christopher Eccleston) so... your choice.
@Mo If you started at the real "first episode" (aired in 1963!), it'd take you a LOOOOOOOONG time to get caught up! Starting with the new series (Eccleston as The Doctor) would be fine.
Favorite aliens ... well, i always have to have a soft spot for the Daleks (even if, as said earlier, they've been overused as of late), but i really like The Ood.
And of course The Master is the best Who villan of all time.
@Klapaucius You can just click on someone's username or avatar to find out where they're from. My favoruite aliens are the cybermen and when I say cybermen, I mean the ones from Mondas/Telos, not the parralel ones.

Well its best to start from the start of the first episode of series 5 you don't have to go as far back as the first series ever or even the first of the new series.
Its a New Doctor so a fresh start and new stories and a new telling with being moffat now so you can just start a series 5 if you wish. If you want to get to know the history of the doctor and past lives you can go way back and find out how he got to this point, but you don't have to if you don't want to its easily enjoyable to start at the beginning of a new doctor.
@37: Thank you. I can't stand these newfangled Cybermen either. Cybermen need deep voices.
For favorite aliens, I'd probably have to say Sontarans, though I wish RTDavies hadn't given them that stupid "Sontar-Ha!" chant. Then again, Gallifreyans are aliens, aren't they. Maybe I will say the Master. Roger Delgado incarnation only, though John Simm isn't bad. Needs a goatee though. I think I prefer him in Life on Mars than as the Master.
What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!
Was so glad to see this topic that I almost screamed lol Have been an avid lifelong fan of both the classic and new series of Doctor Who, as well as all things Nintendo So count me in as one of the DW fans

Not so much a clause, a contractual obligation. Iirc it was between Terry Nation and the Beeb, although my brain's not what it was. Basically, (again iirc) the estate of the aforementioned chap, holds the rights to the use of the Daleks and the BBC at one point were not granted permission to bring them back. A few board room meetings later, the dealio was agreed upon. After all, Doctor Who wouldn't be the same without the tin cans.
@Theshpydar I never was one for cap'n Jack. He was ok in the early eps but then when he started going over the top with inisisting on wanting to shag everything with leg, without eyes and whichever species, he got rather boring fast. It was one of the things that REALLY goaded me about Torchwood. The premise was fantastic but I really wish they didn't put in so much sexual malarky in there.
I liked them all tbh, but it would've been nice to see Paul McGann given a real chance to shine, the film he was in absolutely stunk. It lost all of its British charm.
Have you watched earlier Who, predating Christopher Ecclescake? If you've not, I highly recommend doing so. Especially Tom Baker and John Pertwee...if only for seeing the martial arts machine that is Pertwee in action.
Worst episode? I'd have to either say Waters Of Mars, or that one set in Agatha Christie's house where they all suddenly get attacked by a 12 foot wasp (WTF?)

@eripmav Yeah, i get that about Torchwood; never really got into the show though i do enjoy Barrowman as an actor when he's not being the cliched pansexual horndog (though i did enjoy his spots on Who when he would start flirting with whoever and The Doctor would just be like "Stop, not now").
I also thought Waters of Mars was a bit lackluster, but i liked the ending a lot with The Doctor realizing "I've gone too far!"
BTW, Terry Nation was the man. Not just for creating the Daleks, but for one of my all-time favorite sci-fi series ever, the incomparable Blake's 7 (which i FINALLY got a complete bootleg DVD set of a year or two back). Coincidentally, Blake's 7 led me to Who, as when i was kid, one of the local PBS stations would show Doctor Who (typically the Baker episodes, of course) on Sunday nights right before Blake's 7.
