I beleive there was a few Doctor threads previously that dried up. I've been surprised that despite the large amount of Brits on the site, not as many Who fans as i would have thought.

But i'm in! Tonight is actually the season finale in the US on BBC America (well, part 2 of it). I already know how what happens but that doesn't bother me.

I'm really enjoying Matt Smith as The Doctor, more than i expected . I of course loved Tenant for so many reasons, but Smith has nailed an excellent portrayal so far. And Karen Gillan makes me happy, quite good in her role and oh so cute. Ginger + Scot = the Shpydar drooling. XD

Yeah, i do like that they tried to re-invigorate the Daleks, but i'm not too keen on the rainbow parade look. I prefer my Daleks to look beat-up and industrial. With all the colors, they look more plastic and non-threatening. If they want to keep the colors (or "colours", i guess =) ), i'd rather they make them a little darker or muted.

Season Five has shown a lot of love for the Classic Series.

Multicoloured Daleks(they had all sortsa colours way back when), old-skool baddies all over the series, constant noods to previous Doctors.
And Smith has NAILED the part.

At various times I'd swear he's been channeling Davison, Baker, Troughton and Hartnoll.

Yep I love Matt Smith as the new Doctor and the season finale was truly epic. However, my favourite part of the series were these guys:

WWII Daleks FTW!

Yeah, well said AB. Definitely a lotta love for the classic Doctors this season, even having those couple of moments (the premiere and i forget what other episode) where they showed the faces of the prior Doctors.

I was initially a little hesitant about Smith (as were many fans), but by 20 minutes into the Premiere, it was like "Wow, he's nailed it." Certainly taking pages from almost all the prior portrayals.

Doctor Who is awesome, but my satellite doesn't cover BBC America .
At least I can watch it at my cousins house.
Also, I'm also a little hesistant about Smith right now, but that's because I haven't watched a lot of the last season (only 2 episodes )

I'm pretty okay.

Ahh Doc Who:)

Now, when Smith first took over I was quite sceptical. He's basically a potato in a plaid suite, he seemed to...I dunno, I think the very early eps were written for DT. His mannerisms etc seemed very DT but as the series progressed, he settled in nicely. He plays the eccentricity beautifully. And yes, Amy Pond is quite delicious.

Regarding the Daleks, I don't know if you get Doc Who Uncovered in the US so I'll give you a fact. When they originally brought them back, with Ecclescake, because Billie Piper's a wee lass, they had to make them small so that their eyestalks were level with her eye level. Now that the assistant's a wee bit taller, they were able to increase their height:)

I agree there was a "taste" of Tenant in the earlier Smith-episodes, but i took that as intentional -- that The Doctor was still adjusting to his new regeneration, and so still had some of the 10th Doctor's old mannerisms before really becoming the 11th.

Heh, and funny bit about Piper. She really is a wee lass, isn't she! I saw her on Graham Norton not too long ago and really noticed how small she is. Even though both Eccleston and Tenant are both 6 foot-plus, i didn't really notice it that much on the series.

What are everyone's thoughts on the season finale? I enjoyed it. However, I don't like how it ended without any resolution to...

why the Tardis exploded in the first place or who caused it. The Doctor mentioned it briefly but then the episode ended with that phone call. Cliffhanger galore, I don't want to wait to find out in the next season, lol.

Also, who was that little guy in the dream episode that gave the Doctor so much trouble? Was he from the earlier series in the 60s? Pardon my lack of knowledge about the series but I just started watching recently and was just getting caught up on seasons past while I simultaneously watched this last season.

Well he was practically the bad part of the Doctor's mind. I dunno if he was in the older series.

I'm in the club too, but I'm not sure how many of these posts I can read. I've only seen the new Doctor Who series 1-4, so no Matt Smith! I've obly seen what's available on Netflix Instant. Maybe I should try out this Hulu thing... anyway, I love Doctor Who.

Matt smith is pretty good but he's not as good as everyone is saying. My fave episode of the series was the finale, that was awesome. My least fave was victory of the daleks. It just seemed rushed and it seemed like it would've been better if it was split into two parts. I also think they're bringing back the daleks too much. Just because they're the Dotctor's main enemy doesn't mean they should be in every series, they weren't in every series in the classic doctor who.

Bakajin

@18: Yes, I could use one series where they didn't show up, especially now that they're so stupid looking.

I was skeptical of Smith at the beginning of the season, but I was getting so sick of Tennant towards the end that anyone would do, and Smith did do a decent job of making the role his own. Still, the next person to play the Doctor had better be at least 45 years old—I'm getting sick of these youngsters.

I thought Amy and Rory were a lot of fun, but that whole dynamic with them and the Doctor seemed a bit too reminiscent of the Doctor/Rose/Mickey days.

What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!

the_shpydar

I think it's a bit different than with Rose/Mickey -- Amy and Rory are happily together, while Rose was always in love with The Doctor, while Mickey tagged along like a sad puppy (until the later arcs for his character where he came into his own). Be interesting to see how the next series goes, as i assume Amy & Rory are both sticking around as the companions.

But agreed on too much Daleks. I understand, as they're Who's most iconic enemy, but i wouldn't mind if they sat out for a series or two.

Really enjoyed the finale, especially the beginning parts and The Doctor in a fez. "I wear a fez now. Fez's are cool." I actually liked that they left the why of the Tardis blowing up unanswered; i assume that'll be part of the next series' through-story.

And if tradition holds, does that mean the next Christmas special will be on the Orient Express in Space? =)

Have to agree with that. If only for the use of "timey wimey ... stuff", a phrase i use constantly. Or at least whenever i'm discussing relativistic quantum physics and space-time theory. Which is surpringly often. Too bad that old lady at the bus stop doesn't really care.

I'm American and I haven't watched any Dr. Who, is this a reference? I know where the Delorean reference is from obviously.
