recently i played through shining force 1 on sonic's ultimate genesis collection which turned out to be a FANTASTIC game, so i've been wondering what everyone else thought was one of the best strategy games of all time.
i would have to say my favorite is pokemon conquest or final fantasy tactics but i have yet to play others.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for (especially since this isn't a genre I have played a ton of) but I'd say Pikmin for me.

i love strategy games, especially RTS-games with an eSports-scene
the best RTS game would be: Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne (there's nothing like it, my favorite PC game of all time)
#2 RTS game: Starcraft: Broodwar (obviously)
and then there are lots of other great strategy (rts, turn-based, simulation, etc.) I've either played as a kid or are known to be great games:
The Settlers
Heroes of Might & Magic
Age of Empires
Anno
Command & Conquer: Generals (a new one will be released this year, f2p-model - simply called "Command and Conquer"),
Company of Heroes (CoH 2 release: 25th June)
Total War series (TW: Rome II coming out on september 3rd),
Civilization V: Gods and Kings (Brave New World coming out july 9th/12th)
Europa Universalis
Empire Earth
Battle Realms
Stronghold
Not sure if this is what you are looking for (especially since this isn't a genre I have played a ton of) but I'd say Pikmin for me.
Pikmin is an Action-Puzzle game with some minor Strategy elements. Just saying.
I'll list a top 6, because picking one tends to be difficult and my preferences change almost daily when it comes to this genre:
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survor - Great characters, interesting story (as well as an interesting approach to story implimentation in an RPG). The gameplay is nothing revolutionary, but highly enjoyable all the same.
Masters of Orion - Easily the most fun, interesting, and streamlined-without-being-dumbed-down 4X game I've ever encountered. I've never been more into a strategy game than when I was into this one, and I loved trying to find different ways to conquer the galaxy.
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars - My first RTS, and still among the best. It allows for the most micromanaging without being too overwhelming thanks to the ability to actually set and plan multiple paths instead of relying on the AI's occasionally finicky pathfinding. I really wish more games had that feature. Not to mention the cutscenes could be compiled into easily one of the greatest B-Movies ever created.
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness/Disgaea DS - I played more of the DS version, honestly, but anyways, it's pretty much cute anime humor meets Grinding: The Video Game, and boy is it addicting! I could play it for ages!
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis - If I had to pick one game in the excellent Tactics Ogre series, I'd have to choose The Knight of Lodis, if only because I don't recall being able to recruit random soldiers from your enemies outside of story-specific occasions in the other games in the series. There's nothing quite like recruiting your opponent's entire Army, only to have them all gang up on the Non-recruitables.
2nd Super Robot Taisen Z: Hakai-Hen/Saisei-Hen - The entire series is literally THE greatest love-letter to Giant Robot anime nerds the world over, and this game manages to top them all in every concievable way. The story...seems interesting. I don't know what's going on, but it's not head-hurtingly idiodic like usual; They picked out an insane amount of All-Star series, all of which a great, and are well-represented (not to mention they all work together). I should note that this game alone introduced me to a lot of my favorite shows right now, especially Votoms; The animations are incredible, sometimes better than the shows they're representing (they somehow figured out a way to make the Gurren Laggan's atacks more insane, for instance); The gameplay itself is the best the series has ever seen from my experience (and I've played a lot of these games), though it's still simple enough that you don't even need to know Japanese to play them; The stages were interesting, too, covering the best parts of all the series in a natural order that made sense (for the most part); Also, the original unit was amazing! It was a very versatile unit with the right balance of Super Robot and Real Robot elements, and the pilot was pretty B-A, too. Really, My only complaint is that it's too long. It's One big game stretched accross two seperately sold discs...totally over 100 missions...that can take over an hour each. Yeah, it's a pretty long game.
I'd say Fire Emblem. Or Advance Wars. Intelligent Systems ftw.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (NGC) + Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii), both in Hard mode. None of that Awakening grinding and the story is better, even though Awakening still is the best entry in the series.
I loved playing Age of Empires as a kid, although I mostly spent my time in the sandbox creation mode, because I'd get my butt whupped in the main game, lol.
As for recent memory, it's just been Fire Emblem games:
3. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS)
2. Fire Emblem: the Sacred Stones (GBA)
1. Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
I hope to eventually get around to the Shining Force game that was released on 3DS VC, though.
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Empire Earth (only the first one though), and Age of Mythology are all that come to mind when I think of great strategy games.
Why do people point to their wrists when asking for the time, but don't point to their crotch when they ask where the bathroom is?
