Topic: Do you think there will ever be any 2D 3DS games?

I think they will definately make some 2d games. The DS features one of my favourites of all time (Henry Hatsworth), and as such I think it would be criminal to not make a sequel.

Classic 2D gameplay on the 3DS is an absolute given (see Raving Rabbids or Cave Story for example).
The only thing that remains to be seen is if there will be any new games that don't support its 3D effects.
I'd say in the beginning most devs will want to use the 3D effects. Once the first games with cheap 3D effects launch it will make devs and players think about if the game wouldn't be better in pure 2D. (I mean i don't hope it will happen but i'm being realistic here.)
In my opinion chances for pure 2D games are the highest on 3DS-Ware first (containing all former DSiWare-titles ?).

Personally i'd wish for each and every 3DS-game to make use of "full 3D" in a good way so i'd never think about something new being in pure 2D again.

And for all the pure 2D-fans:
I guess if you slide to 2D the new Paper Mario will look exactly like the other games in the series. That's how i would prefer it to be in most "non-revolutionary" games.

Greetings to you Mr. Goodtaste.
I think in respects to being fresh and unique this game is really on par with Earthworm Jim. If they manage to bring some new things into the formula i could see it happen. (Like a new girly sidekick for example or maybe a different puzzle mechanic.)
Though i wouldn't get my hopes up too high for a sequel.

Blazblue is multiplatform PSP/3DS so there's at least one Sprite based game(although the background are 3D) and I'm sure we'll see more. I think at first most developers will use Polygons to save time and get good use of 3D and then later on when they have the time developers will start to experiment with how 3D can look when using sprites.

It was on the big list of 3DS games revealed at E3: clicky!

Worryingly, WayForward said that they weren't working on it, but that doesn't mean someone else isn't: clickety-boo!

I hope there will be one that sells horribly and nobody will even think of omitting the system's key feature from any of their games ever again.

Wow how positive. It's not omitting a feature if it wouldn't add anything to start with. It's like those Wii games that would be great if they had those few shoddy motions mapped to buttons instead of flailing your arms around. It just doesn't add anything to certain types of games, and with some it can even take away from the experience.

@zez 3DS. It doesn't matter how vital 3D is to a game. Nintendo is marketing it as "3 Dimensions - No Glasses" Heaven, and that's what the consumer rightfully expects. It's more about the system's image than anything else.

Lets not forget there's a market on the DS for games that DON'T use the touch screen. Did that hurt the DS' image? No. People still see it as the touch-based wonder, or whatever.

Just like the DS , some of great games didn't utilize or rather hardly took advantage of the DS' main feature, the touch screen even though it was heavily advertised as that
I believe the 3DS will have some 2d games that dont at all use the 3D later after launch effect since it would be easier to produce and would cost less. That and, Motion controls+3D= distortion on the gameplay

Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time didn't use the touch except once.

@Mickeymac That may be true, but the DS is the "Dual Screen." Two screens is the titular gimmick. 3DS = "3D Dual Screen," so I think it's safe to say that like every DS game used the touch screen (maybe only to display text or pictures), every 3DS game will feature 3D at some bare minimum, basic level at least.

Annnd why would 2D sprites be any different? They can still use 3D. Remember, every 3DS game will have the option to turn 3D off, and in some games there will be no detriment to the gameplay, like in Tales of The Abyss or Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclock.

@Od I wouldn't think that. One game was already confirmed to not support 3d, Pacman Tilt. 3D does not benefit for all games. I can see it now, After sometime the 3Ds launches, some developers would cut the 3D off their game to minimize development costs.

They can do the same thing they did with New Super Mario Bros.
Have a 2D sidescrolling environment, but with 3D characters. Simple.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

There should be a 'sprite' based character- as in they will NEVER have a proper 3d model.

And if this character is playable in a 'fighting'/'action' game such as Smash Bros, they should not be modelled in 3D, but rather stay in their sprite form.. Kinda like G&W staying in his 2D form..

That was off topic, I know. Back on topic:

I say there will definitely be. Or something like Wario Land Shake It with it's cartoon style animation. A Boy and his Blob is coming to 3DS I think.. I know some time down the line, I'll be part of making a game for the 3DS and would love to use a simple 2D-comic book style. Can't wait to finish my bachelor's in Game Art

On the other hand you could interpret the system for a free DS system or a system hat has three Dual Screens. Nah, i'm just kidding and i see your point, Odnetnin.
Of course 3D will be the big system seller. But if a 2D game utilizes other features of the system well and i can understand the reasons i'll be fine i guess.
But it's all so much speculation right now. Let's wait til we've got the system for one year and then see where and when we want our 3D really.
